PART 1
1. Home/ accommodation
What kind of housing/accommodation do you live in?
I live in a terraced house that has a living room, a kitchen, three bed rooms, two bathrooms
and a lovely back garden. It’s not really a spacious house, but it’s just right for me and my
family.
Who do you live with?
I live with my parents and my siblings. We always get on well with each other and have a
lot of fun.
How long have you lived there?
I’ve lived there since I was a child, until I graduated from high school and moved to the
city to enroll at university, where I lived in a student dormitory during the semester.
(If you answer you haven't lived there long)
What’s the difference between where you are living now and where you have lived in
the past?
Living in a dorm with other roommates is totally different from living in my own house.
My current residential area is quite small and it’s very noisy because there are a lot of
people there and I don’t have my own space. Conversely, when I was living at home, I had
my own spacious room and it made me feel comfortable.
Do you plan to live there for a long time?
To be honest, I intend to buy an apartment in an urban area after I graduate from university.
I can decorate and design my ideal home with whatever facilities I want.
Which room does your family spend most of the time in?
It’s definitely the kitchen. Not only lunch or dinner time but all our family reunions take
place in the kitchen where all the family members get together to eat tasty meals, and chat
to each other – it’s a really harmonious atmosphere.
Are the transport facilities to your home very good?
To be honest, most of the transport facilities to my place are not very modern. The bus
service from my work place to home is irregular and usually overcrowded.
Do you prefer living in a house or a flat?
I prefer living in a house to a flat because I value my privacy and need my own space.
Owning an independent house, I can plan and design a house layout to suit myself.
Moreover, I can modify a house according to the size of the family.
Please describe the room you live in.
My current room is actually more like a bedsit. It is a multi – purpose room, I use it to sleep
and study as well. It is painted in pink, that’s my favorite color with a bed, a cupboard and
desk. It’s not really spacious but it’s just right for me.
What part of your home do you like the most ?
I prefer my bedroom most due to its convenience and privacy. Because of my stressful
work I want to be in a quiet place and concentrate on my work. In my own room, I’m never
disturbed by anyone else.
Moreover, in my own space I can do whatever I want without bothering others.

2. Study
Describe your education
I started primary school when I was 7. 5 years later, I went to secondary school at 12. Then
at 16, I made it to a high school for gifted students in my hometown. In my country,
highschool education lasts 3 years, then I went onto higher education at the Foreign Trade
University where I’m currently studying economics.
What is your area of specialization?
Well, my major is External Economics. I have mastered the basics of economics and
socio-economics, combined with business knowledge mainly related to the import and
export business.
Why did you choose to study that major?
I think it would help to fulfill my dream of introducing my country’s agricultural products
to the world. Vietnamese goods have a real potential, but they still struggle to make a
name for themselves, you know.
Do you like your major? (Why?/Why not?)
Yes, of course. Studying economics, especially external economics is interesting and
practical. It helps me to keep up with current affairs and it improves my analytical and
problem-solving skills as well.
What kind of school did you go to as a child?
As a child, I attended a public elementary school. It’s quite a big school in my hometown
which provides both high quality education and a supportive environment, so I think I was
quite lucky.
What was your favourite subject as a child?
Well, I used to be very passionate about drawing when I was a little girl. It was fun to
work with brushes and colors, you know, as it was the time when I could indulge in my
own creative world.
Do you think your country has an effective education system?
To be honest, I don’t think so. Our system has somehow become unduly stressful, does
not promote creativity and the ability to be critical due to the fact that our society still cares
way too much about grades and schools consequently focuses on an exam-driven
curriculum, which I find quite impractical.
(Possibly) Are you looking forward to working?
Absolutely! It’s great to join the workforce, especially when I can do the job I love. Not
only will it pay the bills, but it’ll also give me the joy of making a contribution. It’s hard
to be happy and fulfilled without working, you know.

What do you do?
I’m currently working as a graphic designer for a fashion magazine for youngsters
What are your responsibilities?
Well I’m mainly responsible for designing the cover of the magazine. I normally work with
the concept team to make sure that the final product will both attract the potential buyer’s
attention and express the theme of the magazine.
Why did you choose to do that type of work (or, that job)?
I guess it’s because of my artistic passion. The process of creating beautiful things is
somehow intriguing to me, so I chose to be a graphic designer, which combines both art
and technology. It’s quite interesting, you know.
Is there some other kind of work you would rather do?
Well, if possible, I’d like to be a freelance writer. Actually I’m a big fan of action movies,
and I also care about healthy living, so, I’d love to write about these topics and share my
stories with people of the same interest.
Describe the company or organization you work for
My company is not huge, it’s just a small art designoffice, but is definitely an inspirational
workplace with a young, creative, and extremely passionate team. We work on the basis
of mutual understanding and respect for each other, so it’s kind of an ideal environment
for me.
Do you enjoy your work?
Most of the time. It’s rewarding to co-work on projects with amazing people in an open
and supportive environment to bring out an art production that will ultimately give me a
sense of satisfaction and pride.
What do you like about your job?
Well, the perk of being a graphic designer is that you’ll surround yourself with inspiring
images everyday. My daily working life involves seeking out inspiration in all sorts of
places, researching incredible illustrations and graphics, and creating them too. It’s great,
I think.
What do you dislike about your job
What I don’t like about this job is that our personal taste in design varies, and normally I’ll
have to do a thousand edits to get the final product that meets the demand of my boss while
still * relating / staying faithful to /remaining trueto the initial concept.
* conform means ‘to behave according to the usual standards of behaviour that are expected
by a group or society’ – this does not relate to things like ‘concepts’.
(Possibly)Do you miss being a student?
Sometimes, when I’m burdened with heavy workloads or the pressure of everyday life, I
recall the memories of being a student. We were all carefree and innocent back then. It’s a
precious time that I cherish.

4. Birthday
How do children celebrate birthdays in your country?
It is popular for children in my country to have birthday parties at home or in restaurants
and invite friends, and relatives to join. On this occasion, they are usually given gifts and
money.
How did you celebrate your last birthday?
On my last birthday, I had the best birthday ever. I and friends made an all – day excursion
to Phu Quoc Island, the largest island of Vietnam. We celebrated with a barbecue party
outside and danced together under the moonlight.
What kinds of birthday gifts do you like to receive?
I’m really interested in handmade gifts because they represent not only the creativeness but
also the passion of the senders. Therefore, I always appreciate receiving them and try to
keep them as long as I can.
Is there a difference between the way you celebrate your birthday in the past and in
the present?
Yes. In the past, when I was a child, I could only celebrate birthday parties at home and

make it special such as by travelling to explore new places.

Yes, I do. I am active on many different platforms like Facebook, Instagram or Tiktok. I
use these sites to keep in touch with others, stay updated on what is going on in the world,
and also for entertainment too.
Do you think you or your friends use too much social media?
Well, I have to say yes. It is like an everyday occurrence for us. We spend plenty of time
on social media each day.
Do you want to work in social media? Why?
Well, I would say yes. I’ve been running my own social media accounts for years on
Facebook and Instagram, and I’ve got some experience in this field. Among all types of
jobs in social media, I’m particularly interested in content creation and community
management.
What’s the most popular social media in VietNam? Why?
Some years ago, I would say it’s Facebook. But this year, I guess Tiktok ranks the top in
terms of popularity and the number of active users.
6. Names
1. Does your name have any particular meaning?
Let me see… Well I think it means “bright pearl” or “shining pearl”? I guess my parents
wanted me to become an intelligent and successful girl so they gave me this name.
2. What’s the origin of your name? (or, your surname)
It’s pretty lame really… Dad wanted to call me “Ngoc” or “Chi” back then but he couldn’t
decide which one, then one cousin of mine asked him whether I had a name and he just
blurted out “Minh Chau”. My cousin then spread the news about my name to everyone,
which was something Dad didn’t expect at all, and well, I am stuck with this name now.
3. Do you like your name?
At first no, because my friends often made fun of my name, like with some puns. But then
I gradually learnt to accept it, and now I can’t imagine having a different name from this
one.
4. What do your friends call you?
My friends back in secondary and high school tended to call me “Cat” or “Fat Cat” because
of my nickname on social networks - well I love cats after all. University friends don’t
really give me any nicknames; they just call me “Chau”.
5. Did your family have a certain (nick) name that they called you when you were a
child?
Hmm… well, no? They just called me “Chau”. I think in some other families, parents
would give their children some kind of nick name but that’s not the case in my family.
6. What names are popular to give to babies in your country?
I think people tend to choose some names like Linh or Trang for girls – I don’t know the
actual meanings of those names though. For boys, the two most popular names, I think, are
Son, which means the mountain and Hieu, which means to show affection and respect
towards one’s parents.

or that sounds like another word
e.g. This is a well-known joke based on a pun: “What’s black and white and read (= read)
all over?” – “A newspaper.”
7. Geography
Have you ever studied geography at school?
Yes, actually geography is among the core subjects in my school curriculum. Unlike
History with its dry subject areas, learning Geography is more fascinating because you
can discover some interesting facts, traditions and customs of countries and continents or
find out the causes of some natural phenomena.
1. dry (adj): khô khốc, buồn tẻ, không thú vị
The book is packed with information but it is a little dry. (cuốn sách có khá nhiều
thông tin nhưng nó hơi khô khan)
2. fascinating (adj): thú vị, lý thú There are
fascinating destinations. (Có những điểm đến đầy hấp dẫn)
3. core subjects (n): các môn học chính
Maths and science are core subjects at school. (Toán và khoa học là những môn học cơ
bản ở trường.)
4. Natural phenomena (n): những hiện tượng tự nhiên.
They are researching about the hail and other natural phenomena. (Họ đang nghiên cứu
về mưa đá và các hiện tượng thiên nhiên khác.)
Do you like geography?
Absolutely, I’m into discovering and explaining the formation and evolution of our planet,
human beings and other species. Geography lessons at school always keep me on the edge
of my seat and I always stay focused on the lesson, listening to all the geographical facts
or dealing with the charts and data, which is really like an eye-opener.
1. an eye-opener (idiom): điều làm mở mang tầm mắt
Living in another country can be a real eye - opener.(Bạn sẽ thấy ngạc nhiên khi sống ở
một đất nước khác.)
2. keep sb on the edge of his seat (idiom): khiến ai cảm thấy thú vị, thích thú, phấn khích
The film was so exciting it had me on the edge of seat right until the last moment (Bộ
phim lý thú đến nỗi nó khiến tôi phấn khích cả buổi chiều)

The space shuttle's crew must stay completely focused on the task at hand.(Thủy thủ đoàn
trên tàu con thoi phải ở lại để tập trung hoàn toàn vào nhiệm vụ sắp tới.)
Are you good at reading a map?
Since I’m a person whose sense of direction is not very good, I’ve soon got used to using
Google maps to search for a route while commuting. Having said that, I’m only able to
locate myself and find out the way if the map is electronic and written in Vietnamese.
Otherwise, I would seek help from local people which is sometimes more reliable and
accurate.
1. sense of direction (collo): khả năng tìm phương hướng, ý thức phương hướng
I lose my sense of direction.(I lose my sense of direction.)
2. commute (v): đi lại
We commute by train.(Chúng tôi đi làm bằng tàu lửa.)
3. seek help (collo): tìm sự giúp đỡ
Somebody can seek help if they're disabled.(Ai đó có thể tìm kiếm sự giúp đỡ nếu họ bị
tàn tật.)
Would you visit a country because of its geographical location?
Yes, since I’m a curious person, I always want to explore new places located far from my
country rather than our national tourist attractions. It is because I’m familiar with
Vietnam’s rich culture and traditions as I really love and admire them, so I want to set foot
in stranger places, somewhere in the opposite hemisphere or on another continent.
1. be familiar with: quen thuộc với
You should be familiar with the surroundings.(Bạn nên quen với môi trường xung quanh.)
2. rich (adj): giàu có (về vật chất + giá trị tinh thần)
He has written a book about the island's rich history. (anh ta đã viết 1 cuốn sách về lịch sử
lâu đời và phong phú của hòn đảo)
3. set foot in (idiom): đặt chân tới đâu
He refuses to set foot in an art gallery. (anh ta từ chối đến triển lãm)
4. in the opposite hemisphere: ở bên kia bán cầu
8. Travelling on public transport
1. What kind of public transportation do you usually take?
It’s the bus, I would say. I go to school by bus on a daily basis because the price is very
affordable. A bus ticket costs only around 10 thousand VND which is ideal for those living
on a tight budget.
2. Do most people prefer public transportation in your country?
Although bus is the cheapest way to get around, not many people like it in my country
because it’s always overcrowded and not very punctual.
3. Did you take transportation when you were a kid?
Well, I didn’t take public transportation when I was a kid because the school was within
walking distance of my home.
9. Housework and Cooking
1. Do you do some cooking/help your family cook at home now?
Well, I do help my mom with some cooking, but as an assistant; only because I’m not very
experienced in cooking actually. I would do some prep work like: rinsing vegetables,
peeling the fruit or something like that.
2. Did you do some house cleaning when you were young?
Yes, I did, but not frequently. I only did house cleaning at the weekend as I went to school
every day. And there were just some simple chores like: washing dishes, taking out the
rubbish or washing the clothes.
3. Do you have breakfast at home every day?
Well, not every day. If I get up late and don’t have much time, I grab a bag of toast on my
way to school. But If I’m not in a hurry, I’d eat breakfast at home with family members.
10. Singing
Do you often sing?
I love to sing, but I don’t sing in public. I sing almost every day when I’m alone in my
room. I'm not too good at singing, I can't reach high or too low notes, and sometimes I
forget words to songs, but I do heavily lip-sync. By heavy, I mean intense expressions,
movements as if I'm in the song. I always imagine myself doing some intense singing at a
talent show, but I know I can't do that.

Honestly, I mostly feel like singing when I’m feeling emotional and need a way to release
my emotions. I also sing when I hear a catchy song or just a song I love!

Yes. It is. Even those with a natural talent for singing have to learn the correct technique,
which can only really be taught/coached.
Do you want to be a singer?
I’d love to, but I am not talented enough to pursue it. Sometimes you have to recognise
what you are good at to be able to make your career decisions.
What kinds of music do you like to sing?
I sing for myself, and not in front of people I don't know, so I can sing whatever I like.
Mostly I sing ballads, R&B, country, and other genres.

not convenient when it comes to word processing, so when I’m at work where I have more
complicated projects or work, the computer is really helpful.

Well, I bought an Ipad last week and I just love it. I used to take my laptop to class to take

3. What’s the benefit of technology?
Well, I think technology has brought tremendous benefit to our lives. At the medical level,

better-looking with advertisements.

3. Whom do you think get bored easily, the young or the old?
I think young people get bored more quickly than the old because they want to do
something or have something to do every minute of the day. I have a brother and he always
wants someone to entertain him every day. A lot of young people can’t sit down for very
long, and they have to be moving all the time. That’s why they get bored so quickly.

as well as fiction. I think reading is truly essential in keeping the brain informed as well as
entertained.
Do Vietnamese people do enough reading?
My opinion as a 20-year-old Vietnamese student, is in short a yes. There are plenty of
Vietnamese who have very good book reading habits, but, the majority of the Vietnamese
do not. Some people who are provided with a good study environment very often read
books, and I do myself. However, many teenagers nowadays are more connected with their
devices and therefore are reluctant to pick up a book to read it.
What kind of people like reading and what kind of people don't?
From my personal experience I’d say that with so many other aspects in life, reading is a
preference you become acquainted with in early childhood or you don’t. My grandmother
practically almost always gave me books as presents. My grandparents were highly
educated, literature was very important to them, so they passed on their passion for books.
This was the reason why I started reading.

back to those lovely days spent in school and college.
3. Where do you usually keep things you need?
Well, I have my own secret box where all favorite things have been kept since I was little.
It is on the bookshelf and locked by a heart shaped key outside to keep it from being seen
from others.
21. Watch
How often do you wear a watch?
Since childhood I have had an affection for watches, so I wear my watch all the time. In
fact I’d feel naked without my watch. But I usually reserve nicer watches or the ones with
sentimental value for special occasions or when I wear luxurious clothes.

I developed my affection for watches with a little cute Mickey Mouse dial shaped watch.
And I guess everyone around my age used to own one like that as it was quite in at the

there are tons of people who love wearing them. Some would love wearing them for their
utility while others would prefer to wear them as an accessory.

In what conditions would you use a computer?
As a youngster growing up in the 4.0 industry, I’m used to the existence of computers and
other technical devices. Computers usually serve two main purposes including studying
and entertainment in my daily life. With a laptop connected to the wifi, I can study online
and in the context of covid19 epidemic, searching for learning materials and so on.
Besides, I often use my laptop to let my hair down after nerve-racking hours at school by
watching movies or reading e-books.

bối cảnh kinh tế suy thoái.)
2. let my hair down (idiom): thư giãn
When was the first time you used a computer?
If my memory serves me right, I first use a computer when I was only 7 years old. That
night, I went to my neighbour’s house, as usual, to play with their children, and then I saw
my friend’s sister playing a strange but intriguing game online. She was making colourful
cakes and selling them to the customers. So fascinating was the game that we stood behind
her and were glued to the screen for more than an hour until my mom took me home. That
night, I begged my dad to let me play computer games, and as my dad always indulged
me, he did allow me to use the computer for the first time.
What would your life be like without computers?
Honestly, I’ve never imagined that one day computers would totally disappear from our
life, if this were to happen, it would be a nightmare. My life would be turned upside-
down since I rely on PCs or laptops to work, study and entertain myself. Moreover, I
couldn’t keep in touch with my friends or relatives since there would be no social media
or emails.
In what conditions would it be difficult for you to use a computer?
It would be challenging for me to use a computer when I’m travelling to the countryside
or mountainous areas. Because in such locations, there’s no internet connection or the
connection is too weak, therefore computers seem to be ineffective and we are unable to
carry out online tasks. Last summer, during my holiday in the countryside, I had to skip
several classes despite their importance due to the lack of wifi, and I think It’s the biggest
shortcoming of computers.

Yeah of course, in Hanoi, there are a number old buildings that have been well preserved.

about this place is that it has actually kept its nearly thousand-year-old architecture, which
I believe is something we should be proud of.

Where is your favourite place to sit?
I think it depends on different weather conditions. If it’s a warm day with light breezes, I
enjoy sitting on benches in parks with my friends and chatting. But if it’s freezing outside,
I prefer to curl up on the comfy sofa while watching a soap opera or chatting with friends
on the phone.
Do you always sit down for a long time?
Yes, I spend approximately 8 hours at a stretch sitting in front of the computer every day
due to the nature of my work and major. I don’t think it’s a healthy habit since it has
severely affected my spine and causes backache occasionally. Moreover, as I’m too lazy
to take up any sports or exercise, this sedentary lifestyle could lead to serious health
problems if I don’t get rid of it soon.
Do you feel sleepy when you are sitting down?
No, not really. Because I’m the type that has difficulty sleeping, so only if I lie down on a
comfortable and familiar bed, could I fall asleep more quickly. But when I’m sitting or
working, I rarely feel sleepy. Having said that, during some stressful periods such as before
an examination or a deadline, I need a cup of coffee to keep me concentrated on my work.
When you were a kid did you usually sit on the floor?
Yes. My parents never overprotected me so they allowed me to sit on the ground when I
was a kid and play with my childhood friends. And because I was brought up in the
countryside, there were lots of traditional games that required us to sit on the floor and play
together and we really enjoyed them. But nowadays, from my perspective, parents tend to
be more careful, they don’t let their kids sit on the floor to help prevent some serious
diseases.
25. Evening time
Do you prefer studying in the morning or in the afternoon?
I think It depends. If I have to learn something by heart such as new vocabulary or a poem,
I will wake up early at 4 pm to learn because I will be able to commit all the knowledge
to my memory more quickly. However, I will study subjects requiring calculations or
logical thinking in the afternoon or at night because my brain works more effectively
during this period.
What do you usually do in the evening?
I often devote all of my valuable time at night to work and finishing all my deadlines.
Though evening should be the time when you focus on your personal life and relationships
such as by having dinner with mom and dad, hanging out with friends or recharging your
batteries for another new day, I haven’t been able to achieve a work-life balance. My
work always takes up my leisure time and thus, I have less time to take care of my health,
my appearance and my family.

2. achieve work-life balance (collo): đạt sự cân bằng giữa công việc và cuộc sống
What did you do in the evening when you were little? Why?
When I was a kid, the evening was the time for entertainment and relaxing. After coming
home from school, my family and I gathered around the table and had dinner, then I
watched my favourite cartoon on TV or went out to meet my childhood friends. And when

Yes, compared to the last year, my evenings recently are more relaxing and I have more
time to pursue my interests. It is because last year, I was still a senior in high school and I
had to exert myself to pass the university entrance exam. I remembered that after arriving
home from extra classes, I only had 15 minutes to eat dinner before sitting back at my table
and burning the midnight oil. But now, I’ve already passed the exam and become a
freshman so I have more free time in the evening…I can take care of my skin, and spend
time with my parents more.

and always spare at least 3-4 days to work out at the gym.
How do you do exercise?
(Answer) Personally, I alternate between hitting the gym or taking gentle exercise at

30. Daily Routine
What is the busiest part of the day for you?
Well, it seems that I am up to my ears in work most parts of the day. However, as my
part-time job as a private tutor usually starts in the evening, I guess that is the busiest part
of the day for me. Each day, I have about 3 to 4 different classes to handle, and the job only
finishes after 9pm.
What part of your day do you like best?
To me, I love the morning the most. A beautiful morning, full of sunlight and fresh air, is
the best start for a day. It revitalizes my energy by giving me the chance to take gentle
exercise and enjoy a brisk walk in the park. I am always in high spirits in the morning,
feeling ready for a brand new day.
Do you usually have the same routine everyday?
Yes, I do. From Monday to Friday, I will take university courses in the morning and
undertake teaching classes in the evening. Only at the weekends can I spare time to hang
out with my friends and family members, which without doubt breathes new life into my
daily rigid routine.
What is your daily routine?
Well, as I have said in answer to the previous question, most of my time is dedicated to
studying and working. In the morning, I wake up before 7am, do exercise and then have
breakfast. My classes last from 8am to 11am. After having lunch at the university cafeteria,
I take a quick napat home before startingteaching.
Do you ever change your routine?
Yes, sometimes. When I have no classes at the university, I often study IELTS at home by
listening to authentic materials on the Internet or practice speaking in front of the mirror.
Besides, I also read books and play chess whenever I am free of classes. However, as I
don’t have flexible hours for studying and working, I rarely have the chance to change it.
Do you think it is important to have a daily routine?
Yes, it definitely is. A proper daily routine will assist you in arranging your activities in
the most sensible way. Without a daily routine, one usually does things on impulse, which
could reduce your work efficiency and productivity in the day. I think those who are
disorganised can benefit more from a daily routine.
What would you like to change in your day to day routine?
Well, if I was given the opportunity to change my daily routine, I would like to have more
breaks at night. Instead of teaching in the evening till late, I would like to take classes in
the morning. This would be good for my overall health, as working at night is fairly
demanding and exhausting.
Are all your days the same?
Not really I think. Because each day, I can learn new things from new people I meet in my
school and workplace, so I don’t feel like my day is repetitive. Each day brings me new
experience and valuable lessons, which helps me to broaden my outlook on life. Days
only appear to be the same and tedious when you don’t put energy and effort into things
you do each day.
What time do you get up?
Normally, I have to wake up quite early, at 6.30 am to have more time for exercise and
breakfast, before starting classes at 8am. However, I can stay in my bed longer at the
weekends, until 8am or even 9am when I want to put my feet up after a hardweek.

wear fashionable clothes that are only suitable for this season.
What kind of weather do you like most? Do you prefer dry or wet weather?

be no computers to rely on in urgent cases.

33. Puzzle
1. Did you do puzzles in your childhood?
Yes, of course. In fact, my dad bought me lots of puzzles when I was young as he believed
that these intellectual challenges could be beneficial to my cognitive development. And
thanks to this, my memory, the ability for logical thinking and patience have been trained
since I was at a tender age. But now that I’ve grown up, I rarely do puzzles due to the lack
of free time.
2. Do you like doing word puzzles or number puzzles? Which is more difficult for
you?
Since I’m not into working with numbers I would lean towards word puzzles. I most enjoy
playing the general knowledge games requiring players to answer all questions to solve it
…because by answering these questions, I can broaden my knowledge in many fields
including culture, geography and history. Interestingly, novel facts and knowledge
acquired from these games stick in my mind longer than those gained from boring lessons
at school.
3. When do you do puzzles, during your trip or when you feel bored?
I only do puzzles to kill time, but not while commuting. It is because I have carsickness so
if I read books, surf the internet or do puzzles in cars, I will feel dizzy and vomit. And as I
mentioned before, the older I get, the less time I spend on these mentally challenging
games because of a heavy workload and schoolwork.
4. Do you think it is good for old people to do puzzles?
Yes, I think it’s such an effective way to help old people spend time in their twilight years.
When people reach an old age, after retirement, they often face loneliness and boredom
which could give rise to some mental diseases later on. Therefore, taking up a new hobby
such as doing puzzles could help them become busier and bring them new joy in life.
Besides, since it’s quite challenging for the elderly to learn to use the latest smartphones
or tablets, doing crosswords or solving sudoku is simpler and easier.
PART 2
1. Describe a difficult decision you made that had a very good result
What the decision was
When you made your decision
How long it took to make the decision
And explain why it was difficult to make
(What the decision was) I was fortunate enough to not have to make lots of difficult
decisions in my life so far. But there was one which I’d consider a dilemma and I was
reluctant to decide on. It was my decision regarding what to study in university: whether
to pursue my childhood dream of fine art or to stick with English which is my strength.
(When you made your decision) As high school students, we all had to decide what we
wanted for our life at some point during those years. Some people were at a loss, luckily I
was not one of them as I already knew what I wanted and what my strength was. However,
they weren’t the same and thus my problem started there.
(How long it took to make the decision) I didn’t really think about it in my first year of
high school, but the problem became clearer and clearer afterwards. And it was not until
my final semester in high school was I able to make up my mind that I’d go with English.
So, I’d say I spent two years thinking about it.
(Why it was difficult) It was indeed a tough one. I was torn between my dream and the
reality before my eyes: fine art was what I had always wanted to do, but there wasn’t much
place for it in the market as far as I know, and the competition was intense; while English
was not quite what I dreamed of, but it was more realistic and easier to get a job. I ended
up studying English to make a living and chose to let art stay by my side as my ultimate
hobby. I have no regrets regarding my choice, at least until now.

You can make a good living in sales if you have the right attitude.
Bạn có thể kiếm nhiều tiền bằng việc bán hàng nếu bạn có thái độ tốt.
Part 3:
1. What decisions do people usually make in their daily lives?
Our lives are basically us going around making decisions: what to eat, what to wear, where
to pursue higher education, where to work, whether to go to this place on holiday or not,
etc. Everything from big to small are decisions, and a great number of things we meet in
our daily lives are the result of the decisions of one or another human being.
2. Which is easier, making a decision by yourself or making a decision after group
discussion?
Social interactions greatly affect the eventual outcome of a decision. This can make
deciding something even more difficult regardless of the person’s stance on the matter, as
the decision then would involve some kind of peer pressure – the personal feelings of the
participants of said discussion. On the other hand, making a decision by yourself can be
challenging when you don’t have enough knowledge about such topics of discussion. So
I’d say none of them are easier or more difficult, we just have to use them both wisely.
3. Why are many young people unwilling to follow their parents’ advice?
Being young and inexperienced, combined with the generation gap in both knowledge and
lifestyles, most younger people would think that they know better than their parents. If their
parents approached them with an imposing tone, they would tend to take the advice as the
parents saying “You cannot do this, but I can”, therefore triggering a rebel response from
them.
4. Why would middle-aged people tend to second-guess their own decisions?
As far as I know, middle-aged people have been through a lot more than younger people.
They have seen the world developing for a longer time, and their life experiences hence
are way more complicated. It is natural that they tend to consider everything more
carefully, as they have more memories to reflect upon.
1. Interaction (n): tương tác
There's not enough interaction between the management and the workers.
Không có đủ sự tương tác giữa ban quản lý và người lao động.

There is tremendous peer pressure to wear fashionable clothes.
Có áp lực lớn từ xã hội về việc mặc những trang phục thời thượng.

Anh ấy là một nhân vật hùng vĩ trên sân khấu.
5. Complicated (a): phức tạp
I had to fill in this really complicated form.
Tôi đã phải điền vào biểu mẫu vô cùng phức tạp này.
2. Describe a time when someone asked you for your opinion
You should say:
When she/he asked you
So, I’ll start by talking about the time a friend of mine asked for my opinion. In fact, it was
quite recently that we had a conversation, the details of which I still have in my mind. I am
certain that she reached out to me for some advice in late April, before the big national
holiday. The conversation was definitely out of the blue because when we met up that
day for some work-date, I had only anticipated questions about how she could do well on
her assignments and the sort. So, the conversation was something along the lines on how
to improve the functioning of the club that she was acting as the president of and that I
am also a member of too. So, as she brought up the issue, I was all ears to her and after
she was all done, I started to offer my perspective on the issue.
How she/he felt while listening to your opinion
As I commented, she was attentive to what I was saying. She did pose some interesting
questions as I gave out my opinion. I did some reading of her facial expressions, and I was
certain that she breathed a sigh of relief as I constantly reassured her that everything
would quickly fall into its place, after kickstarting some transition processes.
And explain why she/he needed your opinion
For sure, she sought my opinion because she was very wound up with the prospect of the
club, as she intended to assume another hat in another club and there was no one ready at
hand who could take up the position. But I think it was largely because I was kind of more
of her senior and had more insight on how clubs in other schools actually worked. My
guess would be that my opinions would serve somehow as a reference that she could use
as she tried to figure out what to do and how to keep the spirit and the activity of the club
around in the upcoming semester after she left.

Part 3
1. Have you ever asked someone for his/her opinion?
I have asked a lot of people for their opinions. In fact, it is something that I constantly do
when I’m unclear about a matter that I’m facing. For sure, as a student myself, I always let
people, especially those who I don’t share the same major with, to read through my essays
and have their say on my writing. By knowing where they stand on my essay, I can easily
identify whether I have made my points clear. This is definitely something that is difficult
to point out if there is no outside voice on the matter, when personal biases cloud my
thinking. Therefore, if there are issues, I can immediately correct them.
2. Why do some people react impolitely when listening to someone’s story?
I think there are a lot of reasons why people react impolitely when listening to someone’s
story. Maybe, the listener doesn’t know how to react so their facial expressions after
hearing the story as they may not exactly align with what they feel like inside, so the
storyteller may consider this somewhat offensive. Other times, because some people like
to tell their stories to seek not only advice but also understanding, the lack of sympathy or
empathy from the listener is definitely considered impolite, if not rude to the storyteller.
But I don’t think the listener is the only one to blame here. If the story is really screwed
up then of course, people will react outrageously.

The company has a commitment to align itself closely with specialty retailers.
5. screwed up
làm một cái gì đó quá tệ, quá dở, làm be bét, làm hỏng chuyện
There's been a screw-up with our hotel reservation.
3. Describe a place you have visited that you would recommend as a good place to live
(Where it is): During my trip to Singapore last year, I had an opportunity to visit the
Singapore Botanic Gardens, which impressed me with tons of different colors. The gardens
are located quite far away from tourist traps, but very accessible by bus.
(What it is like): Being the biggest botanic garden in Singapore, covering more than 74.000
square meters, it showcases Singapore’s biggest collection of flowers comprising hundreds
of species with a wide variety of colors, such as red, yellow, orange, pink, or even blue,
and their shades. The national flower of Singapore, which is the orchid, can be found easily
in this garden. Moreover, the park’s entrance is also naturally decorated with colorful
flowers.
(What it is used for): Besides bringing a green environment to the city, which is always
humid around the year, the Botanic garden is also an ideal spot for not only foreign visitors
but also Singapore citizens to immerse themselves in natural beauty and get away from
it all after hard-working days. You can easily see hordes of tourists going sightseeing or
leisure activities being taken place at this place, especially on the weekends.
And explain why you remember it well
Well, I think the primary reason why the memories about this place are still vivid in my
mind is because it was the first time I have ever witnessed such a wide variety of colorful
flowers in my life, although I have travelled to different countries. The moment I entered
the garden, I was completely blown away by its beauty. To be honest, it was a once in a
life time experience. I hope that I will have opportunities to visit this garden again.
Part 3 questions:
• Is color important for clothing?
➔ Yes, I do think that colors play a vital role in clothes since it shows how the clothes
make us look and appear to other people. Sometimes the colors of your outfits even express
your feelings. For example, when I’m not in a good mood, I will choose a black outfit. It
will be dull if a person wears the same colors on a daily basis.
• Should course books be colorful?
➔ Absolutely. I believe that course books should be lively in order to help the
transmission of knowledge to readers be more effective. Using illustrations helps to aid in
learning and may be more effective than just describing something. For example, kids are
usually in favor of books with colorful pictures rather than those with only words. If course
books include colorful contents, they will be more likely to be sold faster than other ones.

4. Describe an occasion when somebody said something positive about some work that
you did
You should say:
Who it was
What work it was
When she/he told you that
And explain how you felt when hearing it
(Who it was) In 2019, I joined an outreach programme in which I had the chance to deliver
lessons for the first time as a teacher. I was chosen as one of the Vietnamese volunteers in
charge of interpreting as well as helping Singaporean students with their lessons prior to
class. The programme lasted from 25th
November to 5th
December 2010. During the
project, I was complimented by the facilitator on my ability to engage students into the
lessons.
(What work it was) As we had to teach two classes comprised of two different age groups,
we struggled a lot in planning lessons since there was a big gap between the level of
English proficiency of the students in each class. We received some negative feedback
from the students on our lesson plan as some wanted to play games while some others were
interested in studying. I came up with an idea of sticking pieces of paper around the walls
as children were required to find match a word with a photo depicting that word.
(When she/he told you that) The morning after that, the children were pretty interested in
the game and the facilitator seemed to be pretty pleased with the result. So, she
complimented me on my idea in the daily briefing which took place that evening.
(And explain how you felt when hearing it) That was the first time I’d worked with
foreigners. I always felt that they were superior to me. However, after this, I could be
pleased that I’m not behind my international peers. That compliment really motivated me
to try better, instead of being complacent about my skills and knowledge.

4. Superior to (adj): thượng đẳng

5. Complacent (a): chủ quan

Part 3
1. Will you be affected when hearing a number of negative stories?
As a fresh graduate without too much experience in the world of work, I tend to be affected
by negative stories. Office politics and gossip tend to exert a strong impact on my
behaviours. There was a time when my bosses treated my colleagues unfairly. Although
this issue was not really related to me, hearing my colleagues gossip behind my bosses’
back also made me develop unfriendly attitudes towards her. Later on, the relationship
between me and my boss also deteriorated.
2. How will you react when someone pays you a compliment?
First, I’ll show my appreciation for their compliment by thanking them. Then, I tend to
ask them what I’ve done that they find good so as to develop myself even more. Most of
the time, I will also ask them whether they have any constructive criticisms so that I can
avoid such mistakes. I do feel proud, of course! But I’m not an attention seeker who posts
compliments on themself on social media so that others also know they’ve received
compliments.
3. Why is negative feedback as important as positive feedback at work?
While positive feedback lets people know what they’re good at so as to continue to do that,
a negative one allows people to know their mistakes so as to avoid repeating these in the
future. I know that most people don’t like to hear negative reviews, but they play a crucial
role in self-development. Without them, we’d continue to make mistakes, which leads to
many bad consequences for ourselves and work.

You should say:
− How did you get that money
Answer: In my life, I have had numerous gifts and presents and among them, the most
exciting and best gift was a sum of money I received when I was 18 years old. After
excelling at an English competition at the national level with flying colors, I was rewarded
2 million VND thanks to school policy. I consider myself a competitive person; therefore,
I always try my best at every single English competition, so that I could get the money as
a gift for my effort and dedication.
− Who gave it to you
Answer: It was the principal of my high school who gave the money to me. To be honest,
I didn’t expect him to give us a lot of money since my school was on a tight budget
dedicated to help unprivileged students. The moment I heard the announcement from my
head teacher, I was over the moon.
− When you received it
Answer: The deputy headmaster was taking school assembly that day and my name and
others were announced in a particular order. I still remember walking on stage with pride
and everyone gave us a really big round of applause. Then, the principal showed up with
certifications and envelopes with money inside them. He gave each of us a warm hug and
then shook our hands, and then we received the money from him. While returning home, I
found myself flying with joy. I opened the envelope after returning home and showed it to
my mother and other relatives.
− And explain why it was the best gift/ present you have ever received.

  • 5. PART 1 1. Home/ accommodation What kind of housing/accommodation do you live in? I live in a terraced house that has a living room, a kitchen, three bed rooms, two bathrooms and a lovely back garden. It’s not really a spacious house, but it’s just right for me and my family. Who do you live with? I live with my parents and my siblings. We always get on well with each other and have a lot of fun. How long have you lived there? I’ve lived there since I was a child, until I graduated from high school and moved to the city to enroll at university, where I lived in a student dormitory during the semester. (If you answer you haven't lived there long) What’s the difference between where you are living now and where you have lived in the past? Living in a dorm with other roommates is totally different from living in my own house. My current residential area is quite small and it’s very noisy because there are a lot of people there and I don’t have my own space. Conversely, when I was living at home, I had my own spacious room and it made me feel comfortable. Do you plan to live there for a long time? To be honest, I intend to buy an apartment in an urban area after I graduate from university. I can decorate and design my ideal home with whatever facilities I want. Which room does your family spend most of the time in? It’s definitely the kitchen. Not only lunch or dinner time but all our family reunions take place in the kitchen where all the family members get together to eat tasty meals, and chat to each other – it’s a really harmonious atmosphere. Are the transport facilities to your home very good? To be honest, most of the transport facilities to my place are not very modern. The bus service from my work place to home is irregular and usually overcrowded. It is a multi – purpose room, I use it to sleep and study as well. It is painted in pink, that’s my favorite color with a bed, a cupboard and desk. It’s not really spacious but it’s just right for me.
  • 6. What part of your home do you like the most ? I prefer my bedroom most due to its convenience and privacy. Because of my stressful work I want to be in a quiet place and concentrate on my work. In my own room, I’m never disturbed by anyone else. Moreover, in my own space I can do whatever I want without bothering others. VOCABULARY Terraced house (noun): (ngôi nhà trong dãy nhà cùng kiểu) a house connected on both sides by other properties Ex: In England, most people seem to live in terraced houses with lovely back gardens. Study Describe your education I started primary school when I was 7. 5 years later, I went to secondary school at 12. Then at 16, I made it to a high school for gifted students in my hometown. In my country, highschool education lasts 3 years, then I went onto higher education at the Foreign Trade University where I’m currently studying economics. What is your area of specialization? Well, my major is External Economics. I have mastered the basics of economics and socio-economics, combined with business knowledge mainly related to the import and export business. Why did you choose to study that major? I think it would help to fulfill my dream of introducing my country’s agricultural products to the world. Vietnamese goods have a real potential, but they still struggle to make a name for themselves, you know. Do you like your major? (Why?/Why not?) Yes, of course. Studying economics, especially external economics is interesting and practical. It helps me to keep up with current affairs and it improves my analytical and problem-solving skills as well. What kind of school did you go to as a child?
  • 8. As a child, I attended a public elementary school. It’s quite a big school in my hometown which provides both high quality education and a supportive environment, so I think I was quite lucky. What was your favourite subject as a child? Well, I used to be very passionate about drawing when I was a little girl. It was fun to work with brushes and colors, you know, as it was the time when I could indulge in my own creative world. Do you think your country has an effective education system? To be honest, I don’t think so. Our system has somehow become unduly stressful, does not promote creativity and the ability to be critical due to the fact that our society still cares way too much about grades and schools consequently focuses on an exam-driven curriculum, which I find quite impractical. (Possibly) Are you looking forward to working? Absolutely! It’s great to join the workforce, especially when I can do the job I love. Not only will it pay the bills, but it’ll also give me the joy of making a contribution. It’s hard to be happy and fulfilled without working, you know. I normally work with the concept team to make sure that the final product will both attract the potential buyer’s attention and express the theme of the magazine. Why did you choose to do that type of work (or, that job)? I guess it’s because of my artistic passion. The process of creating beautiful things is somehow intriguing to me, so I chose to be a graphic designer, which combines both art and technology. It’s quite interesting, you know. Is there some other kind of work you would rather do? Well, if possible, I’d like to be a freelance writer. Actually I’m a big fan of action movies, and I also care about healthy living, so, I’d love to write about these topics and share my stories with people of the same interest. Describe the company or organization you work for My company is not huge, it’s just a small art designoffice, but is definitely an inspirational workplace with a young, creative, and extremely passionate team. We work on the basis of mutual understanding and respect for each other, so it’s kind of an ideal environment for me. Do you enjoy your work?
  • 10. Most of the time. It’s rewarding to co-work on projects with amazing people in an open and supportive environment to bring out an art production that will ultimately give me a sense of satisfaction and pride. What do you like about your job? Well, the perk of being a graphic designer is that you’ll surround yourself with inspiring images everyday. My daily working life involves seeking out inspiration in all sorts of places, researching incredible illustrations and graphics, and creating them too. It’s great, I think. What do you dislike about your job What I don’t like about this job is that our personal taste in design varies, and normally I’ll have to do a thousand edits to get the final product that meets the demand of my boss while still * relating / staying faithful to /remaining trueto the initial concept. * conform means ‘to behave according to the usual standards of behaviour that are expected by a group or society’ – this does not relate to things like ‘concepts’. (Possibly)Do you miss being a student? Sometimes, when I’m burdened with heavy workloads or the pressure of everyday life, I recall the memories of being a student. We were all carefree and innocent back then. It’s a precious time that I cherish. Birthday How do children celebrate birthdays in your country? It is popular for children in my country to have birthday parties at home or in restaurants and invite friends, and relatives to join. On this occasion, they are usually given gifts and money. How did you celebrate your last birthday? On my last birthday, I had the best birthday ever. I and friends made an all – day excursion to Phu Quoc Island, the largest island of Vietnam. We celebrated with a barbecue party outside and danced together under the moonlight. What kinds of birthday gifts do you like to receive? I’m really interested in handmade gifts because they represent not only the creativeness but also the passion of the senders. Therefore, I always appreciate receiving them and try to keep them as long as I can. Is there a difference between the way you celebrate your birthday in the past and in the present? Yes. In the past, when I was a child, I could only celebrate birthday parties at home and invited friends to join. However, as I’m mature now, I can decide to do more things to make it special such as by travelling to explore new places.

I am active on many different platforms like Facebook, Instagram or Tiktok. I use these sites to keep in touch with others, stay updated on what is going on in the world, and also for entertainment too. Do you think you or your friends use too much social media? Well, I have to say yes. It is like an everyday occurrence for us. We spend plenty of time on social media each day. Do you want to work in social media? Why? Well, I would say yes. I’ve been running my own social media accounts for years on Facebook and Instagram, and I’ve got some experience in this field. Among all types of jobs in social media, I’m particularly interested in content creation and community management. What’s the most popular social media in VietNam? Why? Some years ago, I would say it’s Facebook. But this year, I guess Tiktok ranks the top in terms of popularity and the number of active users. 6. Names 1. Does your name have any particular meaning?
  • 13. Let me see… Well I think it means “bright pearl” or “shining pearl”? I guess my parents wanted me to become an intelligent and successful girl so they gave me this name. 2. What’s the origin of your name? (or, your surname) It’s pretty lame really… Dad wanted to call me “Ngoc” or “Chi” back then but he couldn’t decide which one, then one cousin of mine asked him whether I had a name and he just blurted out “Minh Chau”. My cousin then spread the news about my name to everyone, which was something Dad didn’t expect at all, and well, I am stuck with this name now. 3. Do you like your name? At first no, because my friends often made fun of my name, like with some puns. But then I gradually learnt to accept it, and now I can’t imagine having a different name from this one. 4. What do your friends call you? My friends back in secondary and high school tended to call me “Cat” or “Fat Cat” because of my nickname on social networks - well I love cats after all. University friends don’t really give me any nicknames; they just call me “Chau”. 5. Did your family have a certain (nick) name that they called you when you were a child? Hmm… well, no? They just called me “Chau”. I think in some other families, parents would give their children some kind of nick name but that’s not the case in my family. 6. What names are popular to give to babies in your country? I think people tend to choose some names like Linh or Trang for girls – I don’t know the actual meanings of those names though. For boys, the two most popular names, I think, are Son, which means the mountain and Hieu, which means to show affection and respect towards one’s parents. Vocabulary: ✓ Lame [adjective] (vớ vẩn) unsurprising and dull
  • 14. e.g. I found the programme pretty lame and not every informative. ✓ Blurt [verb] (thốt ra/buột miệng nói ra) say something suddenly and without careful consideration e.g. He blurts things out without even meaning it, yet, he doesn't apologize! ✓ Be stuck with sb/sth [expression] (mắc kẹt với cái gì) to have to deal with someone or something unpleasant because you have no choice or because no one else wants to e.g. We were stuck with him for the entire journey! ✓ Pun [noun] (chơi chữ) a humorous use of a word or phrase that has several meanings or that sounds like another word e.g. This is a well-known joke based on a pun: “What’s black and white and read (= read) all over?” – “A newspaper.” 7. Geography Have you ever studied geography at school? Yes, actually geography is among the core subjects in my school curriculum. Unlike History with its dry subject areas, learning Geography is more fascinating because you can discover some interesting facts, traditions and customs of countries and continents or find out the causes of some natural phenomena. 1. dry (adj): khô khốc, buồn tẻ, không thú vị The book is packed with information but it is a little dry. (cuốn sách có khá nhiều thông tin nhưng nó hơi khô khan) 2. fascinating (adj): thú vị, lý thú There are fascinating destinations. Geography lessons at school always keep me on the edge
  • 15. of my seat and I always stay focused on the lesson, listening to all the geographical facts or dealing with the charts and data, which is really like an eye-opener. 1. an eye-opener (idiom): điều làm mở mang tầm mắt Living in another country can be a real eye - opener.(Bạn sẽ thấy ngạc nhiên khi sống ở một đất nước khác.) 2. keep sb on the edge of his seat (idiom): khiến ai cảm thấy thú vị, thích thú, phấn khích The film was so exciting it had me on the edge of seat right until the last moment (Bộ phim lý thú đến nỗi nó khiến tôi phấn khích cả buổi chiều) 3. stay focused on (collo): tập trung, chú tâm vào The space shuttle's crew must stay completely focused on the task at hand.(Thủy thủ đoàn trên tàu con thoi phải ở lại để tập trung hoàn toàn vào nhiệm vụ sắp tới.) Are you good at reading a map? Since I’m a person whose sense of direction is not very good, I’ve soon got used to using Google maps to search for a route while commuting. Having said that, I’m only able to locate myself and find out the way if the map is electronic and written in Vietnamese. Otherwise, I would seek help from local people which is sometimes more reliable and accurate. 1. sense of direction (collo): khả năng tìm phương hướng, ý thức phương hướng I lose my sense of direction.(I lose my sense of direction.) 2. commute (v): đi lại We commute by train.(Chúng tôi đi làm bằng tàu lửa.) 3. seek help (collo): tìm sự giúp đỡ Somebody can seek help if they're disabled.(Ai đó có thể tìm kiếm sự giúp đỡ nếu họ bị tàn tật.) Would you visit a country because of its geographical location? Yes, since I’m a curious person, I always want to explore new places located far from my country rather than our national tourist attractions. It is because I’m familiar with Vietnam’s rich culture and traditions as I really love and admire them, so I want to set foot in stranger places, somewhere in the opposite hemisphere or on another continent. 1. be familiar with: quen thuộc với You should be familiar with the surroundings.(Bạn nên quen với môi trường xung quanh.) 2. rich (adj): giàu có (về vật chất + giá trị tinh thần) He has written a book about the island's rich history. • 16. 8. Travelling on public transport 1. What kind of public transportation do you usually take? It’s the bus, I would say. I go to school by bus on a daily basis because the price is very affordable. A bus ticket costs only around 10 thousand VND which is ideal for those living on a tight budget. 2. Do most people prefer public transportation in your country? Although bus is the cheapest way to get around, not many people like it in my country because it’s always overcrowded and not very punctual. 3. Did you take transportation when you were a kid? Well, I didn’t take public transportation when I was a kid because the school was within walking distance of my home. 9. Housework and Cooking 1. Do you do some cooking/help your family cook at home now? Well, I do help my mom with some cooking, but as an assistant; only because I’m not very experienced in cooking actually. I would do some prep work like: rinsing vegetables, peeling the fruit or something like that. 2. Did you do some house cleaning when you were young? Yes, I did, but not frequently. I only did house cleaning at the weekend as I went to school every day. And there were just some simple chores like: washing dishes, taking out the rubbish or washing the clothes. 3. Do you have breakfast at home every day? Well, not every day. If I get up late and don’t have much time, I grab a bag of toast on my way to school. But If I’m not in a hurry, I’d eat breakfast at home with family members. 10. Singing Do you often sing? I love to sing, but I don’t sing in public. I sing almost every day when I’m alone in my room. I'm not too good at singing, I can't reach high or too low notes, and sometimes I
  • 17. forget words to songs, but I do heavily lip-sync. By heavy, I mean intense expressions, movements as if I'm in the song. I always imagine myself doing some intense singing at a talent show, but I know I can't do that. When do you like to sing? Honestly, I mostly feel like singing when I’m feeling emotional and need a way to release my emotions. I also sing when I hear a catchy song or just a song I love! Is it difficult to sing well? Yes. It is. Even those with a natural talent for singing have to learn the correct technique, which can only really be taught/coached. Do you want to be a singer? I’d love to, but I am not talented enough to pursue it. Sometimes you have to recognise what you are good at to be able to make your career decisions. What kinds of music do you like to sing? I sing for myself, and not in front of people I don't know, so I can sing whatever I like. Mostly I sing ballads, R&B, country, and other genres. • 39. 33. Puzzle 1. Did you do puzzles in your childhood? Yes, of course. In fact, my dad bought me lots of puzzles when I was young as he believed that these intellectual challenges could be beneficial to my cognitive development. And thanks to this, my memory, the ability for logical thinking and patience have been trained since I was at a tender age. But now that I’ve grown up, I rarely do puzzles due to the lack of free time. 2. Do you like doing word puzzles or number puzzles? Which is more difficult for you? Since I’m not into working with numbers I would lean towards word puzzles. I most enjoy playing the general knowledge games requiring players to answer all questions to solve it …because by answering these questions, I can broaden my knowledge in many fields including culture, geography and history. Interestingly, novel facts and knowledge acquired from these games stick in my mind longer than those gained from boring lessons at school. 3. When do you do puzzles, during your trip or when you feel bored? I only do puzzles to kill time, but not while commuting. Do you think it is good for old people to do puzzles? Yes, I think it’s such an effective way to help old people spend time in their twilight years. When people reach an old age, after retirement, they often face loneliness and boredom which could give rise to some mental diseases later on. Therefore, taking up a new hobby such as doing puzzles could help them become busier and bring them new joy in life. Besides, since it’s quite challenging for the elderly to learn to use the latest smartphones or tablets, doing crosswords or solving sudoku is simpler and easier. PART 2 1. Describe a difficult decision you made that had a very good result What the decision was When you made your decision
  • 40. How long it took to make the decision And explain why it was difficult to make (What the decision was) I was fortunate enough to not have to make lots of difficult decisions in my life so far. But there was one which I’d consider a dilemma and I was reluctant to decide on. It was my decision regarding what to study in university: whether to pursue my childhood dream of fine art or to stick with English which is my strength. (When you made your decision) As high school students, we all had to decide what we wanted for our life at some point during those years. Some people were at a loss, luckily I was not one of them as I already knew what I wanted and what my strength was. However, they weren’t the same and thus my problem started there. (How long it took to make the decision) I didn’t really think about it in my first year of high school, but the problem became clearer and clearer afterwards. And it was not until my final semester in high school was I able to make up my mind that I’d go with English. So, I’d say I spent two years thinking about it. (Why it was difficult) It was indeed a tough one. I was torn between my dream and the reality before my eyes: fine art was what I had always wanted to do, but there wasn’t much place for it in the market as far as I know, and the competition was intense; while English was not quite what I dreamed of, but it was more realistic and easier to get a job. I ended up studying English to make a living and chose to let art stay by my side as my ultimate hobby. I have no regrets regarding my choice, at least until now. 1. Our lives are basically us going around making decisions: what to eat, what to wear, where to pursue higher education, where to work, whether to go to this place on holiday or not, etc. Everything from big to small are decisions, and a great number of things we meet in our daily lives are the result of the decisions of one or another human being. 2. Which is easier, making a decision by yourself or making a decision after group discussion? Social interactions greatly affect the eventual outcome of a decision. This can make deciding something even more difficult regardless of the person’s stance on the matter, as the decision then would involve some kind of peer pressure – the personal feelings of the participants of said discussion. On the other hand, making a decision by yourself can be
  • 42. challenging when you don’t have enough knowledge about such topics of discussion. So I’d say none of them are easier or more difficult, we just have to use them both wisely. 3. Why are many young people unwilling to follow their parents’ advice? Being young and inexperienced, combined with the generation gap in both knowledge and lifestyles, most younger people would think that they know better than their parents. If their parents approached them with an imposing tone, they would tend to take the advice as the parents saying “You cannot do this, but I can”, therefore triggering a rebel response from them. 4. Why would middle-aged people tend to second-guess their own decisions? As far as I know, middle-aged people have been through a lot more than younger people. They have seen the world developing for a longer time, and their life experiences hence are way more complicated. It is natural that they tend to consider everything more carefully, as they have more memories to reflect upon. 1. Describe a time when someone asked you for your opinion You should say: When she/he asked you So, I’ll start by talking about the time a friend of mine asked for my opinion. In fact, it was quite recently that we had a conversation, the details of which I still have in my mind. I am certain that she reached out to me for some advice in late April, before the big national holiday. The conversation was definitely out of the blue because when we met up that day for some work-date, I had only anticipated questions about how she could do well on her assignments and the sort. So, the conversation was something along the lines on how to improve the functioning of the club that she was acting as the president of and that I am also a member of too. So, as she brought up the issue, I was all ears to her and after she was all done, I started to offer my perspective on the issue. How she/he felt while listening to your opinion As I commented, she was attentive to what I was saying. She did pose some interesting questions as I gave out my opinion. I did some reading of her facial expressions, and I was certain that she breathed a sigh of relief as I constantly reassured her that everything would quickly fall into its place, after kickstarting some transition processes. And explain why she/he needed your opinion For sure, she sought my opinion because she was very wound up with the prospect of the club, as she intended to assume another hat in another club and there was no one ready at hand who could take up the position. But I think it was largely because I was kind of more of her senior and had more insight on how clubs in other schools actually worked. My guess would be that my opinions would serve somehow as a reference that she could use as she tried to figure out what to do and how to keep the spirit and the activity of the club around in the upcoming semester after she left. 1. reached out

Part 3 1. Have you ever asked someone for his/her opinion? I have asked a lot of people for their opinions. In fact, it is something that I constantly do when I’m unclear about a matter that I’m facing. For sure, as a student myself, I always let people, especially those who I don’t share the same major with, to read through my essays and have their say on my writing. By knowing where they stand on my essay, I can easily identify whether I have made my points clear. This is definitely something that is difficult to point out if there is no outside voice on the matter, when personal biases cloud my thinking. Therefore, if there are issues, I can immediately correct them. 2. Why do some people react impolitely when listening to someone’s story? I think there are a lot of reasons why people react impolitely when listening to someone’s story. Maybe, the listener doesn’t know how to react so their facial expressions after hearing the story as they may not exactly align with what they feel like inside, so the
  • 46. storyteller may consider this somewhat offensive. Other times, because some people like to tell their stories to seek not only advice but also understanding, the lack of sympathy or empathy from the listener is definitely considered impolite, if not rude to the storyteller. But I don’t think the listener is the only one to blame here. If the story is really screwed up then of course, people will react outrageously. 1. have their say có cơ hội được nói lên suy nghĩ của mình We aren't going to make a decision until everyone here has had their say. 2. • 47. (Where it is): During my trip to Singapore last year, I had an opportunity to visit the Singapore Botanic Gardens, which impressed me with tons of different colors. The gardens are located quite far away from tourist traps, but very accessible by bus. (What it is like): Being the biggest botanic garden in Singapore, covering more than 74.000 square meters, it showcases Singapore’s biggest collection of flowers comprising hundreds of species with a wide variety of colors, such as red, yellow, orange, pink, or even blue, and their shades. The national flower of Singapore, which is the orchid, can be found easily in this garden. Moreover, the park’s entrance is also naturally decorated with colorful flowers. (What it is used for): Besides bringing a green environment to the city, which is always humid around the year, the Botanic garden is also an ideal spot for not only foreign visitors but also Singapore citizens to immerse themselves in natural beauty and get away from it all after hard-working days. You can easily see hordes of tourists going sightseeing or leisure activities being taken place at this place, especially on the weekends. And explain why you remember it well Well, I think the primary reason why the memories about this place are still vivid in my mind is because it was the first time I have ever witnessed such a wide variety of colorful flowers in my life, although I have travelled to different countries. The moment I entered the garden, I was completely blown away by its beauty. To be honest, it was a once in a life time experience. I hope that I will have opportunities to visit this garden again. Part 3 questions: • Is color important for clothing? ➔ Yes, I do think that colors play a vital role in clothes since it shows how the clothes make us look and appear to other people. Sometimes the colors of your outfits even express your feelings. For example, when I’m not in a good mood, I will choose a black outfit. It will be dull if a person wears the same colors on a daily basis. • Should course books be colorful? ➔ Absolutely. I believe that course books should be lively in order to help the transmission of knowledge to readers be more effective. Using illustrations helps to aid in learning and may be more effective than just describing something. For example, kids are usually in favor of books with colorful pictures rather than those with only words. If course books include colorful contents, they will be more likely to be sold faster than other ones. I was chosen as one of the Vietnamese volunteers in charge of interpreting as well as helping Singaporean students with their lessons prior to class. The programme lasted from 25th November to 5th December 2010. During the project, I was complimented by the facilitator on my ability to engage students into the lessons. (What work it was) As we had to teach two classes comprised of two different age groups, we struggled a lot in planning lessons since there was a big gap between the level of English proficiency of the students in each class. We received some negative feedback from the students on our lesson plan as some wanted to play games while some others were interested in studying. I came up with an idea of sticking pieces of paper around the walls as children were required to find match a word with a photo depicting that word. (When she/he told you that) The morning after that, the children were pretty interested in the game and the facilitator seemed to be pretty pleased with the result. So, she complimented me on my idea in the daily briefing which took place that evening. (And explain how you felt when hearing it) That was the first time I’d worked with foreigners. I always felt that they were superior to me. However, after this, I could be pleased that I’m not behind my international peers. That compliment really motivated me to try better, instead of being complacent about my skills and knowledge.

Office politics and gossip tend to exert a strong impact on my behaviours. There was a time when my bosses treated my colleagues unfairly. Although this issue was not really related to me, hearing my colleagues gossip behind my bosses’ back also made me develop unfriendly attitudes towards her. Later on, the relationship between me and my boss also deteriorated. 2. How will you react when someone pays you a compliment? First, I’ll show my appreciation for their compliment by thanking them. Then, I tend to ask them what I’ve done that they find good so as to develop myself even more. Most of the time, I will also ask them whether they have any constructive criticisms so that I can avoid such mistakes. I do feel proud, of course! But I’m not an attention seeker who posts compliments on themself on social media so that others also know they’ve received compliments. 3. Why is negative feedback as important as positive feedback at work? While positive feedback lets people know what they’re good at so as to continue to do that, a negative one allows people to know their mistakes so as to avoid repeating these in the future. I know that most people don’t like to hear negative reviews, but they play a crucial

I still remember walking on stage with pride and everyone gave us a really big round of applause. Then, the principal showed up with certifications and envelopes with money inside them.
