PRIMARY HEARING AID BATTERY LIFESPAN CONSIDERATIONS
The question of precisely how long hearing aid batteries can be expected to last
is not as easy to answer, as it seems, because battery performance hinges on a
large number of factors. Battery life depends on the model of your hearing aid,
and may vary widely across unique models created by the same manufacturer.
The way you use your hearing aid will also influence battery life; the more hours
a day it is switched on, the more rapidly you will consume batteries.
There are even different battery lives in the same size of hearing aid battery
depending on the manufacturer, and depending on if you’re buying that
manufacturer’s “premium” line or their “normal” line. Battery life also depends on
battery type; for example some types are only being drained when they are in a
hearing aid that is switched on, while
other types (such as, zinc-air
batteries) start losing stored energy
as soon as you take away the
adhesive strip on the bottom of the
battery and they are exposed to
oxygen, regardless of whether the
hearing aid is on or not.
Because the expense of hearing aid
batteries adds up, if you are looking
for a new hearing aid, you should do
some research to see which types and models of hearing aids are known for the
best battery life, because that could influence your choice. Similarly, a little time
invested in research may help you uncover better batteries for your existing
hearing aids. Hearing aid and battery manufacturers have worked to make things
simpler by standardizing their sizes and using specific color codes for each size,
which is the same for every manufacturer. The following list of battery life is an
approximation, of course, but it should give you a basic idea of how long hearing
aid batteries of each size should last:
• 80 hours – Yellow – #10
• 175 hours – Brown – #312
• 240 hours – Orange – #13
• 300 hours – Blue – #675

To ensure the longest life for your hearing aid batteries when they are in the
hearing aid, turn the hearing aid off when you’re not using it. And to make sure
hearing aid batteries you have already bought but have not used yet remain fresh
and retain their power as long as possible, store them indoors in their original
unopened packages, and at room temperature.
