10. BLOGS ON WEEKLY
ROTATIONS
Pediatric Unit

2011 This week I was at Pediatrics! I really enjoyed the
feel of this unit, I liked how warm and cozy it felt. I got to
see a variety of patients. I got to see a baby after he got
his cleft pallet repaired which was interesting and also
sad! I saw a baby with a fever that they weren't really
sure of his diagnosis. I saw a girl who got a concussion
and now has tremors which was kind of scary! Over all i
really enjoyed this unit because of the nurses who were
there, they were happy more caring then some nurses i
have ran into in other units!

This week i visited the Operating Room. I
was kind of nervous but once I found it
everything went smoothly. First I watched a
hysterectomy, by the Da Vinci robots. Which
was awesome. Then I went to a different
room and watched the same thing, but there
I got to hold a uterus and work the Da Vinci
robot.. which was GREAT! The second day I
watched a gall bladder being taken out. All in
all it was a terrific rotation. Really enjoyed it!
11. General Surgery

This was a lot different then what I
expected it to be like, it was a very fast
pace and up beat pace. I shadowed two
different nurses both in charge of patients
who were post operation. Many of theses
patients only stayed in the hospital for one
or two nights sometimes not even that due
to the new robotic surgeries. I learned that
there is a new laser machine that can
decrease your kidney stones and make
them smaller and easier to pass, it's a
procedure that doesn't require an incision.
I watched my nurse discharge patients and
admit them into the unit. The first day of
rotations the computers were down so I
got to see how things used to take place
back in the old days. I really enjoyed this
experience because I followed nurses who
loved to share information with me.
12. ORIENTATION WEEK REVIEW
During orientation week we learned several vital things needed to go on
rotations and be involved in the hospital such as:
We learned all about security and what we can do to protect ourselves during
fire and tornado drills and power outages.
We learned all about HIPPA and the rules and regulations concerning what
we as students can disclose.
We were informed we must get TB tested before being allowed on rotations.
We learned of the procedures went entering and observing in the Operating
Room.
We were informed on the many ways we can volunteer through Via Christi.
15. FINAL REFLECTION
Health Academy has really expanded my knowledge and
appreciation for the medical field. Coming into this program
I was certain I wanted to become a nurse, but after weeks of
rotations and many hours of thinking I decided that nursing
would not be the career that would make me the happiest.
Over the weeks of rotations, lectures, and research required
for this class I have came to a much better understanding of
what the medical field is all about and how it takes a special
and patient person with the desire to serve others to excel in
this field. I would strongly recommend health academy to
those students who are not quite sure on which direction
they want to go; being in the hospital and seeing situations
first hand can really help guide you. I’m so glad I have the
opportunity to take part in this great and rewarding program,
thank you to all those who made this possible!
