TYPES OF GRAPE VARIETIES

COMPOSITION OF GRAPES
WHITE GRAPES
 ALIGOTE – Mostly used in Burgundy district
for Mediocre wine.
 BOAL(BUAL) – Used for making Madeira Sweet
wine in Portugal
 CHENIN BLANC – Known as Steen in South
Africa. Deep golden white grape , Produces dry
white wine.
 GEWURTZTRAMINER – It’s a native of Alsace.
It produces fruity, floral, dry & spicy wine.
WHITE GRAPES
WHITE GRAPES
 SAUVIGNON BLANC –Together with Semillion used
for making finest sauternes. Produces white Graves and
Barsac. Its grown in New Zealand, Australia, California
and Chile. Produces Dry white wine.
 TREBBIANO – Grown in Italy which produces fresh
light white wine. It is one of the two grapes used in
making Soave, Orvieto, Frascati & is present in Chianti
in a little quantity.
WHITE GRAPES
 RIESLING – Grape of Germany, Alsace, Hungary used for
making finest Hock and Mosels.
 CHARDONNAY – It is able to adapt to every soil. It’s a grape of
Burgundy & Champagne. Thrives well in soil which is rich in
Calcium. It produces Dry white wine most of the time. Chablis,
Pouilly Fuisse, Montrachet, Champagne & Meursault are the
example of Chardonnay grape wine.
 SEMILLION - This grape attracts Botrytis Cinerea (Noble Rot).
Used for making sweet wines of high quality in Australia &
California.
RED GRAPES
 BARBERA – Grown in Argentina and Italy , its high in
acidity. Produces Dry wine with Light or Medium Body.
 CABERNET – There are two varieties , Cabernet Franc
and Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc is used for
making Bordeaux red wines. Cabernet Sauvignon is
used for making red wines of Medoc. Usually produces
wine in high in acid and tannin.
RED GRAPES
 GRENACHE – Grown in Southern Cote du Rhone &
Spain. It is most important grape used in Blend of
Chateauneuf-Du-Pape. Its is used to make Rose wine
like Tavel Rose and Lirac.
 MAlBEC – It is used for making red Bordeaux blend.
Produces dry wine, Medium to Full bodied and Medium
to high in tannin and acidity.
 MERLOT – It is important grape in Bordeaux, it has
thin skin and small in size. It is used to make Pomerol
and St. Emillion wines.
RED GRAPES
 NEBBIOLO – It’s a main grape variety of
piedmont region in Italy. Known as Spanna, which
produces dry red wine i.e. Barolo and Barbaresco.
 PINOT NOIR – It is small in size and bunches are
small as well, one of three grape used in making
Champagne and finest wine in Burgundy. Produces
Light to medium body, Medium dry red wine.
Flavours of dark cherries, red currants, and berries
are common.
RED GRAPES
 SYRAH – It is used for making strong wines of Rhone
valley. It is an important blend used for Chateauneuf-du
pape. Syrah is a dry, full-bodied, opaque wine, with
brisk acidity.
 ZINFANDEL – It is a Indigenous grape variety of
California and used for making varietal red Zinfandel
wine. It is dry, semi-sweet to sweet wine.
 GAMAY – It is grown in many parts of the world.
Mostly used in Burgundy for making Beaujolais (soft &
light fruity wines).
