2. • Why does he want me to talk
about things that do not work for
me?
• I thought I was prepared for work
in this environment but I feel like
the team is carrying is me and I
don’t like it
• If only I get exposure to skills and
tools I will feel much more secure
in knowing what to do and how to
do it
• I want to be seen as a professional,
not as a student
• I felt prepared:
• Spoken to people working in consulting
• Taken part in volunteer consulting program for a charity supported by
McKinsey for students to learn
• Worked as paralegal while waiting to start work
• Received advice from engagement managers on tools and skills
• I don’t have a business background, I need new skills and
WBTs only go so far
• How can I know what skills I will need so I can be better
prepared in advance of needing them?
• Would have loved to do more shadowing to see what
people do and how they do it
• How do I ask for help without hassling people?
• Confusion as to the reasons for this
interview (I originally interviewed her
for the vacationer position and
possibly should have spent longer on
scene-setting)
• A need to show to be in control
• A huge ambition to do the right
thing, now!
• Treated the interview as a job interview and was very
guarded in showing any ‘weaknesses’
• Sat in interview mode, very composed and polite
• Very contained and guarded and keen to answer
correctly
• Was struggling to reflect on the questions I asked and
provided answers that showed she was ‘in control’
The ambitious girl NEEDS A WAY TO quickly start to feel competent and in-control BECAUSE
she wants to always be a fully contributing member of the team.
