3. Giant Alca Extinct from: 1852
What is it?
Gint Alca gigante was a kind of penguin. Young ones ate plankton and possibly at the
beginning of fish regurgitated by their parents. The adults fed mainly on fish between 12 and
20 cm. These penguins could not fly, since they had adapted to terrestrial life and to swim;
even so their wings, though weak and small, out of all proportion to the body, still looked like
bird wings.
Why did it disappeared?
The Giant Alca was disappeared because, It has always been
hunted for both its meat and its giant eggs, so little by little the
population of this species was declining and, therefore, the giant
Alca is part of the list of extinct animals in Spain
4. Escribano patilargo extint from 1913
What it is? The Emberiza alcoveri was a bird native to the Canary Islands, specifically Tenerife. Few are
the data that have on its real appearance, but it is known that due to its size was unable to fly,
characterized by long lower limbs and wings too short, it is not difficult to imagine it similar to the ostrich,
although smaller. Unable to fly or climb trees, it is believed that his diet was based on what he found
Why did it disappeared?
The reasons why the long-legged disappeared are not very clear, although it is most likely that it was due
to the action of man after the islands were discovered. The presence of the human being not only could
have turned it into an object of curiosity and therefore of persecution, but also introduced into the
ecosystem other species that competed with this bird for the territory and its resources, leading to its
disappearance and converting it into another of extinct animals in Spain. Unfortunately, many of the
species that make up the population of birds in this country are in serious danger
of extinction.
