• Teaching approach: Communicative Approach
• Integration of skills: Listening mainly to the teacher and each other during an inter-
action activity (Find Someone Who), speaking to each other during the same task.
Analysing a bar chart that will be built as a whole class activity, writing by inferring
information from a chart.
• Materials and resources: board, post-its, a poster to build up bar chart, copy of a
chart to play Find Someone Who, copy of a chart to work with conjunctions, blu
tack, smiling faces stickers for correction.
• Pedagogical use of ICT in class or at home: none in this class
• Seating arrangement: Horseshoe. Students will also be standing up during a short
period of time.
• Possible problems / difficulties and their possible solutions during the class: as I
have been experiencing difficulties with timing since students take longer to per-
form activities than I had originally planned, I have designed activities that take less
time to carry out and I will provided them with copies of the charts to avoid wasting
time to copy from the board.
• Classroom management strategies: students will need to stand up and move around
the classroom during ‘Find Someone Who’ activity, as there is little room I will be
able to stand among them and monitor they are carrying the activity in L2.
• Potential problems students may have with the language: students have had trouble
identifying and differentiating conjunctions AND, BUT and BECAUSE, I will pro-
vided them with another activity for further practice.
• Assessment: I will assess students’ speaking performance by monitoring their inter-
actions while they play Find Someone Who, I will correct their writing productions
during the Bar Chart activity and also the conjunctions activity.
Routine
I will greet Ss and ask them how they are in L2 so as to let them know the lesson has started.
I will ask students what the day is and write the date on the board.
Warm-up 3’
Purpose: to recall previous lesson’s vocabulary related to school subjects as an introduction for the
next activity.
I will quickly ask students which schools subjects they can remember and write the names
on the board as I elicit the information.
I will write the following question on the board
What’s your favourite subject?
I will ask two or three students what their favourite subject is.
Transition: Great everyone! Let’s work with our favourite subjects
3. 3
Development
Activity 1 15’
Purpose: to interact with each other and sharepersonal information and reasons for their preferences
using BECAUSE
I will draw the following chart on the board
Me
Subject
Why?
I will begin completing the ‘Me’ by saying ‘My favourite subject is English, because it is exciting’
I will ask some students again what his/her favourite subjectis and ask him/her ‘Why?’
then I will provide them with more adjectives to use such as interesting, funny.
I will explain the procedure of the activity by saying ‘To complete the chart, you need to stand
up and ask your partner about his/her favourite subject’ I will also explain that they need to find
someone whose preferences are the same as theirs in order to complete the chart. I will also
say ‘Find two partners with thesamefavourite subject’
I will distribute the copies and grant them one or two minutes to complete it with their own
information before moving around the classroom.
I will be tell students they have 5 minutes to find their partners and complete the chart as I
will time and end the activity once the time is up. As the activity is carried out, I will assess
students’ pronunciation and assist them where necessary.
As a follow up, I will ask two or three students to tell me about the information they have
gathered.
Transition: Well done! Let’s organise thisinformation now. I will ask students to open their
notebooks, copy the date and glue the copy of the chart under the headline ‘Find Someone
Who’
Activity 2 15’
Purpose: to build up a bar chart about students’ favourite subjects, to understand howto read the
chart, to analyse it and write sentences about it.
I will stick on the board a poster with the bar chart1. It will look as following

English Science Technology PE History Maths Art
I will give each student a post-it sheet and say ‘Write down your name on these post-it, write it
in big capital letters’
I will begin by asking students what their favourite subject is and ask them to come to the
board and place the post-it in the right column. The bar chart will be built up as students
answer and stick the sheet on it.
Once we have finished, I will say ‘Look, this class’s favourite subject is (Maths)’ and then I will
ask ‘How many girls like PE? / How many boyslike technology?’
The expected answer is that students answer these questions, I will write the answers on the
board for visual reference:
Five girls like PE
Three boys like Technology
Then, I will ask students to work in pairs and to answer the following questions (I will spe-
cifically tell them not to copy the questions, just answer them) I will stick the poster on the
wall.
1. How many girls like Science?
2. How many boys like Art?
3. How many students like English?
4. What’s the class’s favourite subject?
As students work on the questions, I will correct their productions.
As a follow up, we will check the questions with the whole class.
Transition: Excellent work! Let’s keep talking about school subjects.
5. 5
Closure 10’
Purpose: To havestudents practise the use of conjunctions by reading and inferring information from
a chart.
I will ask students to recall information about Harry Potter, Hogwarts school and some of
the subjects he attended there. Then, I will distribute the following chart form the work
with.
I will write some examples using AND and BUT to activate prior knowledge of the conjunc-
tions. I will use the bar chart in order to do so, for instance
Five students like PE and two students like Maths
Three students like Science but the class’s favourite subject is PE.
I will ask students who are Harry’s friends. At this point, I have learnt they have all seen the
films so the expected answer should be the correct one. 2
Read the chart and complete the blanks with AND or BUT
Quidditch Potions History of Magic Flying Lessons Astronomy
Harry X
Hermione X X
