The fax machine allows for the transmission of scanned printed materials via telephone lines to another fax machine or device. It was invented in 1843 by Alexander Bain in Scotland. The fax works by scanning an original document, converting it to a bitmap that is transmitted through phone signals, then decoded and printed out by the receiving fax machine. A fax combines a scanner, modem, and printer. While faxes were convenient for paperless transmission, they are being replaced by email and online document sharing through the internet.
