A myth is a purely fictional story that has been passed on for generations, usually involving
supernatural persons, actions or events. Hercules (also called Herakles), is one of the strongest and
most celebrated mythical heroes. These myths were made up thousands of years ago and have
acquired more details as they have been passed down. The story of Hercules is one of a man who
was so strong and courageous, whose deeds were so mighty, and who so endured all the hardships
that were given to him, that when he died, Hercules was brought up to Mount Olympus to live with
the gods.

Hercules decided to block one of the doorways and then approach the fierce lion through the other.

Heracles had always been a normal child, or so he thought. Heracles, also known as Hercules is the
son of Alkmene, who is mortal, and Zeus, who is a God, the God of Mount Olympus to be exact.
Since he was the son of Zeus, Hera, Zeus' wife/sister got jealous and wanted to kill Heracles every
chance she got. She would do anything to have him dead. When he was a baby, Hera sent two
snakes to his crib to try and kill him, but he just grabbed them and strangled them. She then realized
that nothing could kill him because of how strong he was, so she decided to kill him through guilt
and she knew exactly how to do that. Hercules grew up, got married, and had children. She saw that
he was happy and she despised that, so she sent a madness upon him and he killed his family,
knowing that if you killed your family the furies would drive you mad. When he awoke from the
madness he felt horrible from what he had done and prayed to the God Apollo for forgiveness. The
god's oracle told him to get rid of the blood guilt that he would have to Eurystheus. Eurystheus was
a fellow friend of Hera so they gave him these twelve tasks because Hera thought that would defeat
him. His first labor was to kill the Nemean Lion, who could not be pierced in the skin with anything,
so Hercules snapped his neck and used his skin as armor. His second labor was to kill the Lernean

Marilyn Todd's 'Bad Day on Mount Olympus', retells the stories of Roman, Greek God's and
immortals, in a modern day language.
The first myth system to note is the story of Io, in which Zeus, King of the gods, is unfaithful to his
wife Hera, with a maiden named Io. Zeus does not want his wife to find out about this, so he turns
Io, into a heifer so as Hera will never see her. 'Jupiter thinking he's best get in first, if he's looking to
protect the girlfriend, so... spotting a herd of cows on the hill, quick as a flash, he turns her into a
heifer.' This shows he does want to protect Io, however, we see his cowardly ways by him not telling
Hera in the first place. In other interpretations of the story, we see Io get turned into a 'beautiful
white cow' and also Zeus disguising the River Nymph as a cow meaning she can blend among a
herd. The effect of doing this changes the tone of the story, in a sense of making it more comical to
readers, instead of it being about betrayal and trust.
The second myth system to note is Hercules and the Thespian Lion. When Hercules was 18 he killed
the Thespian Lion, because it was part of his Twelve Labours in which he must abide by as penance
for killing family, and once he completed all of these, Hercules was a free man once again. When
Hercules killed the Lion, he wore the fur for the rest of his life, and we have mention of this in

friendly. Since the movie is based on the Greek myth Hercules there will still be some similarities

Hercules is a well known Greek/Roman hero. He is the great hero and son of the great god Zeus.
But like all prominent heroes, he had enemies. His most hated enemy is no other than Zeus' wife,
Hera. Because of the goddess Hera, he is known for one of his greatest personalities, bravery. Even
though Hercules; life was dark he was the most powerful and famous hero in all of the Greek
mythology. To begin Hercules' origin, it was Zeus who lay with Alkmene and spawned Hercules.
But before that Zeus had a desire for Alcmene. One day while Amphitryon, Alcmene's husband, was
away, Zeus went to visit Alcmene disguised as Amphitryon. Assuming Zeus to be Amphitryon,
Alcmene let him come into her house. After extending one night into three, Zeus lay with Alcmene.
When Amphitryon had returned home the very next day, and learned from the blind Oracle, Tiresias,

The film Hercules (2014), directed by Brett Ratner, has a unique aspect like no other Hercules film
created. This film is heavily influenced by both Greek and Roman mythology but also takes into
consideration a Euhemerism approach by portraying Hercules as a human. This interpretation takes
an orphan that has extraordinary strength that became a mercenary and builds himself into a myth
with which he uses to instill fear into his enemies. This film provides an example of the evolution of
a myth and how political corruption can be a driving force in the creation.

While completing tests the Hero learns qualities about themselves and learns the skills to complete
the tasks at hand. Hercules finds hidden qualities deep inside himself that help him figure out how to
beat the task at hand. He finds that there is more to himself than just strength and power. He is also
cunning and intelligent. Hercules completes the tasks at hand in this stage and the tasks help shape
his character. Hercules learns a little from each task which helps his character build. A key example
of this is how Hercules handled cleaning the Augean stables. He decided it was not possible to clean

wild temper. Augeas was furious that Hercules completed the task and he had to give one–tenth of

and stole all the cattle for himself. This was an action of rage not logic and hurt his chances of
