H
ow do you pack the sports,
luxury and elegance of the
Porsche brand into a city car
just four metres long?
Organised into teams of three or
four, the 14 students of the fourth
edition of the Milan Polytechnic
Master’s Course in Transportation
and Automotive Design turned their
creative talents to tackling the chal-
lenge posed by the brief chosen for
the second year in the five year par-
tnership between the faculty and
the Volkswagen Group, which called
for an electric car for transporting
passengers and goods (or, rather,
luggage) for premium users in Milan
as the city hosts the Expo.
This hands-on experience with
the Porsche brand and its hallmark
styling cues was an exciting adven-
ture for the students, and Porsche
Advanced Design director Mitja
Borkert’s periodic assessments of
the projects offered them an inva-
luable opportunity for learning and
growth as well as playing a crucial
role in the development of the
projects themselves.

The teaching staff directed the
development of the concepts pro-
posed with a model simulating the
methods and dynamics of a real
design centre, with the lecturers
playing the role of project leader
and Mario Favilla acting as director.
After an initial meta-design rese-
arch stage conducted by professor
Francesca Lavizzari under the gui-
dance of Nicola Crea (exterior
design director) and Samuel
Codegoni (interior design director),
the concepts began to take shape.
The recent addition of the lecturer
Chiara Morellini to the faculty’s tea-
ching staff reveals an intention to
place more emphasis on the
importance of this aspect. The
master’s course itself and the work
of the teaching staff were coordi-
nated by the architect Fausto Brevi.

To offer the students a better
possibility of finding work in the
real world, the course modules
considered every stage in the
design of a car and the respective
problems involved. Covering every-
thing from drawing methods and
tools to tape drawing, from model-
ling techniques (digital, virtual and
physical) to concepts regarding
architecture, ergonomics, materials
and design technology, and from
the development process and
teamwork dynamics to the main-
stay of the master’s course itself –
the project workshop – the 380
hour course transformed theory
into practical reality to give shape
to the ideas of the students.
Over the academic year, luminary
figures such as Giorgetto Giugiaro
interacted with the students
during lectures and workshops.
The traditional end of course exhi-
bition, which was open to the public,
was an important opportunity for
the students to come into contact
with companies and the media.
At the end of the course, the
Volkswagen Group awarded a num-
ber of study bursaries and inter-
nships to students on the basis of
their performance throughout the
course. The four final projects, with
interesting creative solutions for
both form and concept, are illustra-
ted in these pages.

SPORTIVITA’ URBANA
C
ome concentrare i valori di
sportività, lusso ed eleganza
Porsche in una vettura
urbana lunga soli quattro metri?
Una sfida da affrontare a colpi di
creatività per i 14 studenti della
quarta edizione del Master in
Transportation e Automotive Design
del Politecnico di Milano che, nel
secondo dei cinque anni di collabo-
razione tra l’università milanese e il
Gruppo Volkswagen, divisi in team
da tre o quattro componenti,
hanno risposto al brief che chiedeva
di ideare una vettura elettrica per il
trasporto di passeggeri e merci -
intese prevalentemente come baga-
gli al seguito - per utenti di “prima
classe” nella Milano dell’Expo.
Affrontare il marchio Porsche
con i suoi stilemi caratterizzanti, è
stato per gli studenti un’avventura
entusiasmante e le revisioni con il
designer Mitja Borkert (responsa-
bile dell’Advanced Design Porsche)
figure di riferimento tipiche di que-
sta realtà, con Mario Favilla nel

ruolo di direttore. Dopo una prima
fase metaprogettuale di ricerca,
condotta dalla professoressa
Francesca Lavizzari, sotto la guida di
Nicola Crea (responsabile per gli
esterni) e Samuel Codegoni (respon-
sabile per gli interni), i concetti
hanno preso forma. Per il color&trim,
il nuovo inserimento della docente
Chiara Morellini, manifesta la volon-
tà di dare maggiore rilievo a questa
materia. A dirigere il master e il
lavoro del corpo docente, l’architet-
to Fausto Brevi.
Per offrire agli studenti maggiori
possibilità di collocazione nel
mondo del lavoro, i moduli didattici
hanno preso in esame tutte le fasi
della progettazione di un’automo-
bile e le diverse problematiche con-
nesse. Dagli elementi e gli strumen-
ti per il disegno, al tape drawing,
alle tecniche di modellazione (digi-
tale, virtuale e fisica), alle nozioni di
architettura, ergonomia, materiali e
tecnologie per il design, al processo
di sviluppo e alle dinamiche del
lavoro in team, fino ad arrivare al
cuore del master - il laboratorio di
progetto - un percorso di 380 ore
in cui la teoria diventa pratica e le
idee prendono forma.
Nell’arco dell’anno accademico,
nomi di rilievo come quello di
Giorgetto Giugiaro hanno intera-
gito con gli studenti durante lezio-
ni a tema e workshop.
Il consueto allestimento della
mostra finale, aperta al pubblico, è
stato per gli studenti un’importan-
te occasione d’interazione con le
aziende e con la stampa presente.
Al termine del percorso di studio,
il Gruppo Volkswagen ha messo a
disposizione alcune borse di studio
e stage formativi presso i suoi cen-
tri di design, assegnate sulla base
di un’attenta valutazione dell’intero
percorso di studi. In queste pagine,

no interessanti spunti creativi sia
formali, sia concettuali.
