23. Needed Policy Changes
An additional staff member, a media specialist or a para,
is needed so that students and staff can be better served
and media center hours can be extended.
Proposal
A para-pro shall be added to the library staff. One employee will take the early shift (7:45 –
3:45); the second employee will take the late shift (9:00 – 5:00). They should take lunch
and planning period at different times.
The media center shall remain open without interruption from 7:45 – 5:00.
Note:
Walton County schools are on a 160 day calendar. Teachers work from 7:45 – 4:45. Before
and after school program hours are 6:30 am – 6:30 pm. The two employees could further
stagger their hours to cover this entire period if need was established.
24. Needed Policy Changes
The County web-site should be updated to include new
Surpass license information; it now indicates that it is
expired (see below).

25. Needed Policy Changes
A School Media Committee should be established
in accordance with Walton County Policy as stated
on the web-site.
“The principal of each school shall appoint a media committee
consisting of at least one representative of each of the following
types of individuals: school administrator(s), media
specialist(s), faculty representative, and parent or community
representative(s). The parent and community representatives
shall be appointed on a yearly basis.”
26. Needed Policy Changes
A policy should be established concerning the acceptable level of
organization for the library media center.
clutter around the circulation desk
When teachers were asked what is needed as part of the questionnaire, the
following answers were given:
“a new librarian”
“books I can actually find because they are where they should be”
“change the decorations more than once a decade”
“clean the store room so we can get in there to the class sets of books”
27. In Conclusion
This assignment has been so much fun! At one point I
wanted to include a second floor with natural lighting and
an outdoor classroom on the roof. However, the “sky is not
the limit” so I tried to keep my dreams realistic. Even so,
many of the changes I proposed will simply not be funded;
yet, there are several things we can and should do right now.
The establishment of a media committee and reorganization
of existing materials could greatly enhance our media center
with minimal or no expense.
