Think & Do
Camden
A community space to learn & develop actions to tackle the climate crisis in Camden
Camden 2025: bringing people
together to develop a vision of
the future and a call to action
• Camden has a proud,
rebellious spirit that
throughout its history has
seen communities come
together to make change
happen.
• Camden 2025 sets out a
compelling vision for the
Council, citizens and
partners working together in
tackling issues.
• The climate crisis is an issue
that affects all of us and that
we all have a role to play as
individuals and as
organisations.
Citizens Assembly: bringing people
together to develop radical
proposals on the climate crisis
• We developed a Citizens’
Assembly on the Climate
Crisis.
• This brought together over
50 randomly selected
residents to deliberate how
Camden can best tackle the
climate crisis.
• The assembly heard a range
of evidence outlining the
facts of the climate crisis and
the ways in which it can be
tackled.
• They then developed 17
actions that should be taken
by residents, community
groups, businesses and the
council in Camden.
Think Do Camden: bringing people
together to test & learn ideas and
actions to tackle the climate crisis
• Building on from the
assembly, we are hosting a
space where people can take
part in, run & grow activities
that increase social action
around the climate crisis.
What do we want to achieve?
People become
more aware and
involved in
actions to tackle
the climate crisis
People feel more
connected as a
result of meeting
others in the
space
Activities helping
tackle the climate
crisis in the space
increase their
reach & impact
New projects are
developed
between people
to tackle the
climate crisis
Relationships are
strengthened
between groups
tackling the
climate crisis
How will the space achieve these outcomes?
• We will work with groups to explore ideas and run activities that enable
everyone to become more aware and involved in actions to tackle the
climate crisis
• We will work with people to run activities that help connect people from
different backgrounds
• We will invite groups tackling the climate crisis to run activities in the
space and promote them through our different networks
• We will develop activities that help people develop different types of
projects to tackle the climate crisis
• We will bring together groups tackling the climate crisis to co-design the
space and programme of activities
What is the space?
• We have moved quickly to find a venue and were
able to secure the old Flapjack’s café in Kentish
Town for a trial period of up to six weeks.
• The space will be designed in a way that attracts
people to come in and that everyone feels
welcome and able to contribute.
• We have mobilised a group of residents to develop
the design & layout of the space and will provide
coffee & food.
• We have worked with different services to ensure
the health & safety of the space.
What will happen in the
space?
• The space will be run in a
way that everyone feels they
can contribute, connect with
people, develop & grow
projects together and share
their skills & resources.
• We have run a workshop
where 30 people from
groups tackling the climate
crisis put forward activities
they could run, skills &
resources they could share.
• We have co-designed an
initial programme of
activities. We are convening
a group of residents who
want to help promote &
network the space to wider
communities.
What will the council do in
the space?
• The space will be run in a
way that the council tests &
learns how to use spaces to
mobilise people to take
action around common
causes, in this case the
climate crisis.
• We will enable staff to test &
learn how to support people
to develop projects to tackle
the climate crisis in the
space.
• We are convening a group of
residents & staff to explore
how we learn & adjust
during the six weeks.
What type of
activities will
there be?
1. Activities that are easy to
take part in and help people
become more sustainable
2. Activities that connect to the
themes of the Citizens Assembly
on the Climate Crisis
3. Activities that help people to
grow & develop projects to
tackle the climate crisis
1. Activities
that are easy
to take part
in and help
people
become more
sustainable
I share & borrow
I eat & cook with others
I recycle and repair
I make new things
I discover my area
2. Activities
that connect
to the themes
of the Citizens
Assembly on
the Climate
Crisis
Food
Energy
Transport
Greening
Awareness raising
The programme of activities has also been co-designed to build on
the themes prioritised through the Citizens Assembly.
We will also share a selection of proposals collected during the
wider consultation of the Assembly through a wall display.
3. Activities
that help
people
develop &
grow projects
to tackle the
climate crisis
Week 1. Understanding the challenge
Week 2. Immersing ourselves in the challenge
Week 3. Seeking inspiration from others
Week 4. Developing ideas together
Week 5. Growing our activities
Week 6. Celebrating & learning
How will the
Council
manage the
space?
The space will be managed by the Council with a minimum of
three council officers present and the space being risk assessed
It will be open from 10am to 6pm on weekdays as well as one
weekend day
Council officers will welcome people into the space, help them
get involved in the activities and run certain co-design activities
Council officers will take part in activities on an equal footing
with all other participants
Groups will be invited to run activities in the space in
agreement with the principles of the space
People visiting the space and running activities will be invited to
feedback on their experience to help improve the programme
What are the principles of Think & Do Camden?
We welcome people to take
part whatever time, skills or
needs they have
We treat everyone involved
with dignity and respect
We value each other’s
perspectives & experiences
We help people become
more aware and involved in
actions to tackle the climate
crisis
We connect with people
from different backgrounds
We collaborate and learn
from each other
We help people be creative
& innovative in tackling the
climate crisis
We are open & honest and
challenge ourselves to
improve the space
What will be
the measures
of success?
People become more aware and involved in actions to tackle
the climate crisis as a result of visiting the space
People have increased connections with people from other
backgrounds as a result of visiting the space
Groups tackling the climate crisis see the number of people
involved in their activities increase
New ideas and projects are developed within the space and
people feel they are able to develop projects
Groups tackling the climate crisis feel they are working better
together and have been able to influence the space &
programme
How will we
measure
these
outcomes?
Baseline & track how well the space has helped people
visiting become more aware and involved in actions to tackle
the climate crisis
Baseline & track how well the space has helped people
connect more with people from other backgrounds
Baseline & track additional number of people involved in
activities to tackle the climate emergency in Camden
Track number of ideas and projects developed within the
space and evaluate how able people to develop projects in
the space
Baseline & track how well groups tackling the climate crisis
feel they are working together and have influenced the space
& programme

What are the risks & mitigations?
Risks Mitigations
Not enough notice will have
given to people to join the
activities
• Use the Council’s channels & networks to promote the activities
• Ask groups running the activities to promote them too
• Use content from the activities taken place to attract more people
• Design the space so it attracts people in walking past
Doesn’t feel like a space which
is co-designed with people
• The look and feel of the space will reflect the shared ownership of the challenge, and
will be co-designed, co-produced and co-delivered
• Invited 30 groups tackling the climate crisis to put forward activities, skills & resources
to help shape the programme of activity and design of the space
Doesn’t feel inclusive for
everyone to feel welcome
• We will use our other different networks to invite them to promote activities to their
communities and run activities that tackle the climate crisis
• We will develop a set of principles around inclusive engagement to be applied to all
activities run in the space
What are the risks & mitigations (cont.)?
Risks Mitigations
Doesn’t feel like this is a space
for social action to tackle the
climate crisis
• Building programme of activities around five themes of the citizen’s assembly for the
climate crisis
• Connect people in the space to other projects taking forward the proposals from the
citizen’s assembly
Six weeks isn’t enough to have
any meaningful impact
• We do not know yet what resources will be needed to help build social action and
climate emergency projects happen. The Council will be aspirational and will, at the
very least, share the challenge of how we access resources, and anything else that is
needed.
• Programme of activities will be curated to help people develop ideas and projects over
the six weeks. Will review the project through a weekly check-in, which will also serve
to evaluate how effective we’re achieving the outcomes and what we need to adjust.
• Living room space in Kentish Town Library and the Neighbourhoods space in Kentish
Town will provide spaces to continue hosting these activities & projects as part of a
wider network of organisations
• Other spaces might be identified for ongoing action across the borough

  • 21. What are the risks & mitigations? Risks Mitigations Not enough notice will have given to people to join the activities • Use the Council’s channels & networks to promote the activities • Ask groups running the activities to promote them too • Use content from the activities taken place to attract more people • Design the space so it attracts people in walking past Doesn’t feel like a space which is co-designed with people • The look and feel of the space will reflect the shared ownership of the challenge, and will be co-designed, co-produced and co-delivered • Invited 30 groups tackling the climate crisis to put forward activities, skills & resources to help shape the programme of activity and design of the space Doesn’t feel inclusive for everyone to feel welcome • We will use our other different networks to invite them to promote activities to their communities and run activities that tackle the climate crisis • We will develop a set of principles around inclusive engagement to be applied to all activities run in the space
  • 22. What are the risks & mitigations (cont.)? Risks Mitigations Doesn’t feel like this is a space for social action to tackle the climate crisis • Building programme of activities around five themes of the citizen’s assembly for the climate crisis • Connect people in the space to other projects taking forward the proposals from the citizen’s assembly Six weeks isn’t enough to have any meaningful impact • We do not know yet what resources will be needed to help build social action and climate emergency projects happen. The Council will be aspirational and will, at the very least, share the challenge of how we access resources, and anything else that is needed. • Programme of activities will be curated to help people develop ideas and projects over the six weeks. Will review the project through a weekly check-in, which will also serve to evaluate how effective we’re achieving the outcomes and what we need to adjust. • Living room space in Kentish Town Library and the Neighbourhoods space in Kentish Town will provide spaces to continue hosting these activities & projects as part of a wider network of organisations • Other spaces might be identified for ongoing action across the borough

Editor's Notes

  1. The activities that people are running in the space will help people be more sustainable, whether it’s sessions to help people plant, sewing using disused clothes, making soup with children, repairing bikes, recycling decorations a walking tour.
  2. The programme of activities has also been co-designed to build on the themes prioritised through the Citizens Assembly. Activities will be facilitated that help connect into the work that’s being taken forward from the 17 proposals agreed by the assembly. Another way we could link the Think and Do to the Citizens’ Assembly on the climate crisis is by sharing a selection of the ideas and proposals collected during the wider consultation of the Assembly. There where over 600 community idea from residents, school children, businesses and organisations community ideas  (PDF). These ideas were reviewed and RAG by assembly members based on their relevance and feasibility. Eighteen of the best ideas did not make it to the final 17 that were put forward. In addition to this, there were a number of other ideas, that were parked as amber, that could also be shared at the think and do, see the document attached. I propose that we develop a wall display with a selection of the most relevant ideas so there is a clear continuation of the conversation between what people said during the citizen assembly and the think and do, which is the first step towards action. As we will be replaying some of the Citizen assembly presentations on the evening of the launch (31 October), we could talk about this bank of ideas which should be displayed on the wall for people to see. We could ask Cllr Harrison if he would like to present the assembly proposals and the bank of ideas.    It occurs to me that the bank of ideas could be a live display so visitors are encouraged to share their ideas, using pre-designed cards, and stick them on the wall. We would encourage them to read existing ideas before adding new ones. We could even think of a sort of voting system for people to highlight ideas they like best… this might proof complicated though. Anyway, let us discuss this at the briefing tomorrow.
  3. We have thematised the programme to help people develop the thinking, energy & connections to develop, test & grow projects to tackle the climate crisis. We will be running specific sessions with groups to help people develop new projects or grow existing ones.
