Altered Book Workshop
An altered book is a book that has been creatively modified or decorated in some way. According to the International Society of Altered Book Artists, an altered book can be any book that has been recycled into a work of art through techniques like painting, collaging, stamping or sculpting. Altered books can range from simply adding drawings or text to completely transforming the book into an intricate sculpture.

Political statement ormaybe just making an odd point, American artist Maya Lin who was invited by the Spoleto Festival officials to make the poster, used the image of a coffee table sized Hammond World atlas to point out the connections between Rhode Island and South Carolina. The connection includes and border outlines of two unnamed African countries..Best know for her acclaimed Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., Lin is often credited with art that embraces the landscape..While many of speculated on the meaning of the illustration titled "From Rhode Island to South Carolina", Cedar Posts immediately noticed the connection. Both Rhode Island and South Carolina were major players in the 1700-1800 slave trade. Both Rhode Island and South Carolina who face each other in the atlas received slaves from the western coast of Africa where Liberia and Sierra Leone where part of the slave exporting empire.The cut out shapes of 1700's Sierra Leone and Liberia make the statement complete. The cut out area of South Carolina also exposes the index, where the removed portion of Rhode Island exposes the world map in the opening pages of the atlas.Few remember that Rhode Island was the only northern colony to use slaves both for labor and trade. At one time Rhode Island's ratio of slaves to whites was 8-1. But it is South Carolina that comes to mind when the word slave is spoken.

Ideas for YourAltered Book… Drawings from life/ direct observation… Circle words on the page that you like Cover everything on the page but certain words Paint or draw from photographs Draw from memories or dreams Glue in black and white photo copies of photos you have. Paint or draw over them. Cut out parts of the pages Glue or sew some pages together. Glue in maps, receipts, hall passes, old tests or quizzes or homework. Draw a caricature Make a drawing with ball point pen, then use watercolor crayons over it Make designs and patterns. Punch out holes Glue in an envelope...put drawings or photos inside of the envelope. Glue in a piece of paper folded into an accordion…draw on the accordion. Draw on tracing paper and glue it into the book so you can see the text through it. Completely cover the whole book page so you can’t see any words. Cut out words from one page and then glue them onto another page. Glue in old stamps or a coin from a foreign country. Layer lots of art materials Use stencils Make a design with masking tape Get something random from the recycling bin and use it to design a page. Illustrate a word or phrase from a page of your book. Weave strips of paper or photos into the page(s) of your book. Make a page of your book a tribute to a famous artist. Doodle! Write the lyrics to your favorite song. Glue in a dollar bill and change it with art. Make a page based on your family heritage Make a pattern with plain label stickers. Use a newspaper article or current event for inspiration Write your message to the world. Glue in your fortune from a fortune cookie then add art to the page. Draw a self portrait Draw all of your best friends or family members. Make a page based on words in a foreign language. Use poetry as inspiration Write your daily schedule. Draw the corner of your closet/ bedroom/ classroom. Draw your art supplies. Use a famous quote. Make an image of nature…. Your favorite food.. Draw what you hate. Use something you are learning about in another class right now. What else can you think of??? The possibilities are endless….
