3. History 1914-195119131912
The Davenport Hotel
was originally built in
1914 and named after
local businessman
Louis Davenport.
Designed famed
Spokane architect
Kirtland Cutter, the
hotel remains
Spokane’s only AAA
four diamond hotel.
The hotel was the first
hotel in the nation to
have air conditioning.
Crab Louis was created
and first served at the
Davenport. During the
original construction of
the hotel, no one was
seriously injured or
killed, a rarity for the
early 20th century.
Between 1951 and 1985, each
subsequent owner of the hotel
let the building fall into
further disrepair and the
Davenport was eventually
closed. Originally scheduled
for demolition, the fear of
airborne asbestos kept the
building from being
destroyed. In 2000, Walt &
Karen Worthy of Spokane
purchased the building and
spent the next few years
reviving the historic hotel to
it’s former grand condition.
1951-2014
Between 1914 and Louis
Davenport’s death in
1951, the Davenport
remained Spokane’s
premiere hotel.
4. WhatMarkAdenSays
1. “The rooftop plaza was restored
but the swimming pool was
removed. The skylight over the
grand lobby had been blacked out
for fear of bombing during World
World War II, and part of the
restoration process included a
cleaning and restoration of this
wonderful design element.”

5. WhatMarkAdenSays
“The original three-story Pennington
Hotel was too decrepit to save so it
was torn down and rebuilt. The Hall
of Doges was salvaged from the
interior, stored intact offsite, then
re-installed in the new structure.”
