Essay on Cosmic Irony in The Odyssey
The first element of cosmic irony is fate, and fate has a role in book nine of The Odyssey. It typically involves a powerful deity (or something fate
itself) with the ability and desire to manipulate or even control events in a character's life. Fate is demonstrated from many characters. An example of
fate is when Odysseus, son of Laertes, blinds Polyphemus, one of the cyclops, after Telemus, Eurymus' son, tells Polyphemus this. "Oh no, no–that
prophecy years ago . . ./it all comes home to me with a vengeance now!/We once had a prophet here, a great tall man,/Telemus, Eurymus' son, a master
at reading signs,/who grew old in his trade among his fellow–Cyclops./All this, he warned me, would come to pass someday–/that I'd be blinded here ...

The reality of the situation is that Odysseus must see the Cyclops, which shows his false sense of freewill. Another example is when Odysseus thinks
he is being smart when he chooses not to kill Polyphemus and blind him instead, "who'd brave it out with me/to hoist our stake and grind it into his
eye/when sleep had overcome him?" (9.371–373). In reality, he must not kill the Cyclops because he must blind him instead since that was what
Telemus said it would happen. This defines false sense of freewill because Odysseus thinks that he is brave and smart for coming up with that
plan, but he has no other choice than blinding Polyphemus even though he does not know. Really it is a sad example of a cat toying with a
mouse; fate is in control of the situation, and Odysseus falsely believes that he can escape the danger and avoid destruction. Cosmic irony also
involves two characters playing a game of cat and mouse. It can be defined by the deity of toys with the character much as a cat might with a
mouse; the outcome is clear to the disinterested observer, but the mouse hopes desperately for escape. An example of this is between Odysseus and
Polyphemus when they keep battling back and forth while Odysseus and his crew are leaving the island. At first Odysseus showing his pride taunts at
the Cyclops, "So, Cyclops, no weak coward it was whose crew/you bent to devour there in your vaulted cave–/you with your brute force!

Analysis Of Homer 's The Odyssey
"Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns ... start from where you will–sing for our time too" (I, 1, 12). From the very beginning,
Homer shows his intention for themes of The Odyssey to be applicable in the modern age and essentially "sing for our time" (I, 12). Homer's epic
provides the ideal reflection upon the very definition of heroism because it details the strenuous journey of Odysseus, a crafty hero whose key priority
is to return home to his family. As one of the most prominent themes, TheOdyssey carries forth the idea of heroism through the portrayal of
Odysseus, and establishes a connection with the real world through the expression of life lessons. Consequently, Odysseus is characterized to serve as
a role model for the successful hero because, after all, the poem is essentially centered on his very name. However, The Odyssey simultaneously
conveys that an entirely perfect hero may be impossible, but a means for improvement is always present. The attributes for success that are revealed in
The Odyssey can be examined under interconnected ideas of passion, perseverance, and prowess. Thus, heroism is the most compelling theme of The
Odyssey because it exemplifies the attributes for success while also demonstrating that heroes are not without mortal flaws.
The attributes for success are vital to the meaning of heroism and rather obvious in the journey of Odysseus: passion, perseverance, and prowess. At
the end of the Trojan War, the passion that

Charles Frazier’s Novel has Differences in Contrast to...
A hero could not be without the support from his or her loved ones. Family supports the hero in their time of need, and motivates the hero to survive.
Charles Frazier's novel Cold Mountain has differences in contrast to Homer's epic, The Odyssey. The works differ because the main characters have
different family situations to go home to. Odysseus has a loving wife and son, while Inman does not know if the girl he loves will marry him. Even
though the works can be proven different, Cold Mountain and The Odyssey can be compared. The works show how the main characters use basic
essentials of life to help the characters return home. The characters' strength to return home comes from food, help from others, and motivation.

It was a powerful vision, and yet in his mind he saw himself hating every minute of it, his days poisoned by lonesome and longing" (220). Inman
realizes he does not want to live alone. Inman knows the importance of people and he needs them to survive. The help from people motivates both
Inman and Odysseus to continue their journey home and to not give up.
After twenty long years away from his family, Odysseus still has motivation to return to Ithaca. Odysseus could have stayed with the princess of the
Phaeacians, but instead he wants to go home to his family. Odysseus' wife, Penelope and their son, Telemachus motivate Odysseus. Alkinoos offers
Odysseus his daughter's hand in marriage: "My daughter should be yours and you my son–in–law, if you remained. A home, lands, riches you should
have from me if you could be content here" (Homer 120). Odysseus refuses the king's offer: "O Father Zeus, let all this be fulfilled as spoken by
Alkinoos! Earth of harvests remember him! Return me to my homeland" (120). Odysseus knows that his family has been waiting for him for years. The
motivation to see his family and homeland help Odysseus win his battles and continue his journey home.
Inman's motivation to see Ada helps him to continue walking home, fighting through the excruciating pain of his wounds. Inman uses his motivation
as strength because he knows it will help him. When Inman finally reaches Cold Mountain he refuses to eat anything until he sees

The Heroic Code Of Honor For A Hero
Warriors of ancient Greece were considered heroes by following the Heroic Code of excellence. They achieved this by acquiring a kleos;
establishing fame, glory and a positive reputation. It was not an easy task to become a Grecian hero. Building and maintaining kleos meant that a
warrior must be brave and strong, be "a speaker of words and a doer of deeds." The solider had to protect his friends and harm his enemies, respect the
gods and his elders, and most of all value his honor over his life. To die in battle, and be spoken of after death was the most important act of honor for
a hero. The Greek tragedy, Iliad, attributed to Homer, portrays Achilles as the most gallant hero of the Athenian army. The story tells of Achilles, who
develops into the greatest hero of the Trojan War. While the end of the end of the poem does portray Achilles as the solider that the story foretells
throughout the poem he does not act like that. Many times in the story Achilles actions are perceived as unheroic but ultimately they shape the course
of the few weeks of the Trojan Wars described in the Iliad, the Achaean's final victory at Troy and his emergence as a hero.
The poem in Book 1 lauds Achilles as the finest warrior of the Athenian army. Nonetheless, when his commanding general, Agamemnon refuses to
return to return the captive Chryseis to her father, the priest of Apollo, and a plague ensues, Achilles becomes an insubordinate (disrespecting his
commander) by demanding that he return

Virgil vs. Homer in Underworld
How does Virgil deviate from Homer in the underworld, and why?
When comparing "The Aeneid" to "The Odyssey", it is impossible not to notice the similarity between Homer and Virgil 's poems. Both heroes leave
Troy, granted one barely escapes and the other leaves victoriously, and both in one sense or the other are trying to reach their home, whether it is the
old or future home. The adventures of the two heroes are incredibly similar on a number of accounts with the trip to the underworld being most
intriguing. First of all it is important to understand that Homer and Virgil wrote their poems for different reasons; Homer 's "TheOdyssey" was written
for entertainment purposes, while Virgil 's "The Aeneid" was written in order to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aeneas on the other hand is much more focused on the future; he is also trying to get home, but that home does not exist yet, besides that, while
seeing his old friends he also finds out about the future of his generations and yet even more about the city he is on his way to establish. This could
bring us to the point of Homer 's vs. Virgil 's reasons for writing their poems; as mentioned earlier, Homer wrote his poem for entertainment purposes.
This explains why the majority of book eleven is made up of Odysseus meeting his old friends and great warriors of the war; through telling their
stories, Homer entertained the readers and the audience by letting them imagine how the heroes act after their death (what still matters to them, which
quarrels have not been forgotten etc.). Virgil on the other hand skips most of the greetings of Aeneas with old friends and focuses instead on the
meeting with his father. There, while including sentimentality, the main point of the meeting is for Aeneas and the readers to find out about where the
rulers of Rome came from. Aeneas in the underworld gets to see, although not speak to, his future son, the future Caesars and learns all about the glory
of the future empire. Even the description of the underworld itself may fall

Analysis Of Homer 's ' The Iliad '
Throughout history, men have been traditionally viewed as superior since the beginning of time. Although, throughout this time, women have held
many different roles in society. In the Iliad, Homer portrayed the role of women in his time as having a very suppressive role. Women during this
period of time and especially in this culture are treated primarily as merely property and were used for producing material within the household.
Women were often taken and given as if they were material belongings, due to their lack of choice and their unfortunate circumstances. However, apart
from portraying women as pieces of property, Homer depicts in his Iliad that women are sometimes conceived and introduced as suppliants to their
masculine heroines. Homer depicts them as being inferior beings to men both intellectually and physically. Throughout Homer's masterpiece Iliad,
women play an important but very modest role that entails their relative significance and the impact they partially have on some of the affairs that take
place.
The Iliad began with an argument, which is for lack of better terms, a fight over a girl, between Achilles and Agamemnon over Briseis, who was
considered to them a war prize. During that time one of the biggest advantages of the Greek army raiding a Trojan allied town was that were able to
'loot' from the town afterwards. They brought back the spoils of the town and whatever they desired and divided them equally amongst the warriors.
Agamemnon's price was

As I Lay Dying and The Odyssey: Books of Epic Quests with...
As I lay Dying and the Odyssey
As I lay dying and the Odyssey can both be considered books of epic quests with incredible odds. Faulkner takes the title of As I Lay Dying from a
line spoken in the Odyssey by the Greek warrior Agamemnon. Agamemnon tells Odysseus when he travels to the Underworld, "As I lay dying, that
woman with the dog's eye would not close my eyes as I descended into Hades." Both books give off extraordinary characters, with what some may
call outlandish behavior, to possibly throw off the reader from what was expected in such a quest or journey. These two novels seem as to begin in the
midst of all the tragedy and situations, using flashbacks and stories of the characters to relate back and give the reader insight of ... Show more content

In another adventure, Odysseus lands on the island of the Greek goddess Circe who turns his men into pigs. Odysseus once again devises a way to
cleverly defeat her, save his men, and return to the sea. After his encounter with Circe, Odysseus must journey into the underworld where he meets with
his mother and some of his comrades from the Trojan War. ( Kleiner, David. The Odyssey. West Berlin, N.J.: Townsend Press, 2005. Print.)
There are many different symbols that link both books together. For Faulkner in As I Lay Dying he uses the Love triangle as Homer did in the
Odyssey. From Addie to Anse to Whitfield in As I lay Dying, to Agememnon, to Clytemnestra, to Odysseus in the Odyssey. Along with Elyptsu in
the Odyssey falling off the roof and dying, Cash falls off the Church roof and breaks his leg. Not only does Clytemnestra betray him to die at the
hands of her lover, she refuses him the mere dignity of proper burial rites. Faulkner uses this same concept in As I Lay Dying, where Addie is
denied proper burial by her children and own husband. Along with the dangerous crossing of the proverbial river. Darl is seen as a sort of
Cassandra from the "Odyssey", blessed with a second sight which most dismiss as simply "queer," foreseeing the disaster at the river yet unable to
stop it or do anything about it. (Faulkner, William. As I Lay Dying. Ed. Noel Polk. New York: Vintage

Chad Pregracke from CNN and Odysseus are Heroes
A hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, and/or noble qualities. A hero doesn't have to be a fictional
character. Heroes can be found in the real world too. CNN Hero of 2014, Chad Pregracke is known as a hero. This is because he is highly self
sacrificing when it comes down to keeping the Earth clean. Odysseus, from the epic poem "The Odyssey", is known as a hero also. The reasoning
behind this is because on his way back home to Ithaca, he overcomes many obstacles and shows many traits while doing this. Chad Pregracke and
Odysseus both display a number of heroic qualities.
Chad Pregracke, an average everyday human being, is not so average after all. He is known as a modern day hero. He shows these traits that make
up his hero like description through his thoughts, words, and actions. Pregracke, through his thoughts, shows that he is caring for the environment and
its condition. "People intentionally dumped (these) in the river and also littered," Pregracke said. "Even 100 miles away, (trash) will find its way into
a creek or a storm drain and into, ultimately, the Mississippi River."(CNN.com) Pregracke is heroically caring because he takes in mind what is going
on in the world that could be effecting the environment negatively instead of ignoring it like most people do today. He never thinks about how it could
just be ignored or moved past but how the garbage being dumped is hurting the environment and that it should not

The Iliad By Ancient Greek Poet Homer Essay
The Iliad, written by ancient Greek poet Homer, chronicles the battle and events during the final weeks of The Trojan War, an armed conflict between
the Achaeans army and the defenders of Troy. It further recounts the story of the wrath of Achilles, the greatest warrior in the Greek army, against King
Agamemnon who unfairly appropriates Briseis, the lovely maiden belonging to Achilles after relinquishing his own maiden, Chryseis, in order to end
the plague sweeping the Greek armies. Infuriated by Agamemnon's demands, the dishonored and humiliated Achilles initially withdraws from the
king's army and enlists the service of Zeus, king of all gods, to bring upon the Achaean army a devastating loss. He later reconciles with Agamemnon
and joins the Greek army to avenge his friend, Patroclus' death, who was killed by Hector, the mightiest warrior in the Trojan army. As Achilles renters
the battle, he experiences aristeias his finest, most glorious moments during the conflict as he is able to rout the Trojan army, mercilessly slaughtering
them one by one, and dragging the mutilated body of Hector after brutally murdering him. It is only through these fearless, life threatening actions does
Achilles achieve everlasting glory, honor and fame, bestowed to him by his community. In Homer'sIliad, Achilles' aristeia supersedes the aristeias of
other characters as the warrior is able to display unsurpassed skill and prowess in battle, is motivated to seek the principle of justice for his

Over time it gets replaced by natural bone.
This allows the implant to become better grafted to the bone and strengthening it. Allowing it to function better with no risk of defects or gaps between
the implant and bone.
As implants usually only last around 15 years they need to be replaced. When the old implant is taken out it takes a lot of the natural bone with it, as
it is grafted to it. Bone Save allows this bone to be built back up, after the surgery.
The Bone Save, bone cement and features of the hip allow the implant to become a perfect replacement hip (Total hip replacement surgical procedure,

Comparing The Odyssey And O Brother Where Art Thou
The "Odyssey", one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer, and "O Brother Where Art Thou", a 2000 a film written, produced,
and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. At first thought you would not think the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou" and "The Odyssey" have anything
in common. It is however, the modern film depiction of the troubles of a man during the depression and is molded by the ancient struggles of
Odysseus in Homer's Odyssey. "The Odyssey" is about a Greek warrior and is placed back in the times of mythology. Whereas, "O Brother Where Art
Thou" is a movie telling of three escaped criminals trying to find a treasure (which ends up being false), and the adventures and struggles they faced
along the way.
"The Odyssey" depicted Odysseus' journey back from the Trojan War, which was the story portrayed in The Illiad, to his homeland. It is believed
that Homer is not the only author of the epic poems. "The story was memorized and recited by poets and minstrels during a period of several
centuries when Greece had no written language." (Russell 151) Around 800 B.C. Homer put the story down in writing. According to Russell the
stories are "... about the passions and follies of human beings and for this reason it seems in many ways to be as modern as the current dramas we see
on television."
"O Brother Where Art Thou" is set in Mississippi in the 1930s and tells of three prisoners who escape prison, hoping to return home to their families.

The Odyssesy by Homer
Epic heroes are usually great leaders and accomplish great deeds and undertake journeys or quests that usually take place in a wide setting such as
the world. The epic hero is a "larger than life person" who embodies the highest ideals of his culture and time period. Also, this type of heroes
experience human emotions, yet is able to master and control these human traits to a greater degree than a typical human. All of these standard traits
were set by Odysseus, the epic hero from the Odyssey, written by Homer. Odysseus embodies the characteristics of the Greeks at the time such as
Curiosity, sharp intellect, cunningness all throughout the Odyssey to set the standard for epic heroes for future generations to come.
Out of all of Odysseus traits, his cunningness and ability to be an articulate speaker is one of the more prominent traits that shines throughout his
journey. Through the odysseys' many bumps and battles Odysseus demonstrates his cunningness and quick thinking at every page. When Odysseus
says, "My name is Nohbody: mother, father, friends, everyone calls me Nohbody" (Homer 9.360–361). Odysseus shows his deceptiveness by naming
himself Nohbody in future plans of escaping from Polyphemus. In this situation, Odysseus cunningness helps him to escape and get back on track to
his journey back to Ithaca. The following demonstrates another example Odysseus' persuasiveness: " My quiet Penelope–how well I know– would

Remarkable Minds: The Influence of Great Texts
Each reader if effected differently by the texts they have the opportunities to study and to each the most influential authors and texts will vary.
Throughout the study of the school year and the many texts represented in the curriculum several can be seen as exemplar texts which have made an
important and lasting impact on society and literature. In consideration of this fact, five texts stand above the rest including The Iliad, Plato's Republic,
Beowulf, Paradise Lost, and A Modest Proposal. Each text influenced the world after it was written and continues to be taught in great detail,
separating it from texts of lesser importance. The emphasis of these texts throughout the curriculum is clear and continuously these texts and their
authors reemerge in other works of literature. However, the influence and importance of each text can only be determined by the readers as they are
the ones to feel the effect. It is these five previously mentioned texts that possibly have had the greatest impact on the culture, history, and literature
of not only their geographical locations but on the world as a whole. Beginning with one of the earliest texts studied during the school year, The
Iliad, which is an epic poem of war and heroes, has left its mark in history in remarkable ways. The story begins when a man named Paris abducts the
beautiful Helen and causes as war to breakout amongst the Greek and Trojan armies. The poem depicts the epichero Achilles who will be one of the

Analysis Of ' The Epic Heroes '
Luck of the Hero
(An analysis of epic heroes) Often when reading literature, the reader can't help but think that no character could have such qualities as they are
portrayed in the story. A classic example of this are the epic heroes that help facilitate the history of important cultures. The epic is a long piece of
poetry describing a hero's journey to a better self and complete a mission. These heroes are often extremely brave and smart, which can leave the
audience doubting any historical accuracy and believability in the character. These characters face nightmares in real life and live to tell the tale.
Epic heroes are, after all, the explanation of a culture's ideal warrior or citizen. However, these heroes also suffer from a tragic flaw, usually hubris
or extreme pride in one's self. It is a legitimate question to wonder how a hero can be so incredibily successful with such a large flaw. This question
leads many people to assume that luck has a lot to do with the success of the epic hero. Luck can be construed as the universe's way of helping things
along. Especially with the early polytheistic cultures, divine intervention was a large theme, and this can serve as the backbone of luck for the epic hero.
Odysseus from the Odyssey is a prime example as Athena is a constant aid to him in his long journey home. Odysseus truly thrives from divine luck
more than his own personal intelligence or bravery. To begin, Odysseus has extreme wit, but much of it is actually luck

The Battle Of Vehicle ( Bfv ) Versus The Future Fighting...
The Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV) versus the Future Fighting Vehicle (FFV) Programs MSG Torry Rice United States Army Sergeants Major
Academy Class 67 Mr. Madera Introduction In the past 15 years, the battlefield has been in the open desert and urban environments. The
geographical locations where the United States have fought their wars have had a demand for armored troop vehicles. The Bradley Fighting
Vehicle (BFV) has met and exceeded that demand since 1981. With the possible new threat in Eastern Europe, there is a more demand to have a
solid armored troop carrier in the Army's arsenal. The Bradley is the right vehicle for the current and possible future threats. The Army wants to
erase the M2A3 BFV from its inventory and replace it with a new and improved fighting vehicle. Replacing the Bradley without doing an effective
cost analysis would be a huge loss to the Army's budget plan. This would be detrimental especially when the Bradley is not the only vehicle
program the Army is trying to replace. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the rationality behind not replacing the BFV at this time. Background
Between 1950 and 1960, the Army was developing a plan to transport infantry troops in a specialized armored vehicle. The first transport vehicle was
the M113. This vehicle would transform over the years until 1981 when the Bradley Fighting Vehicle was introduced into the Army's arsenal. This
armored vehicle got its name from a World War II General

Odysseus Is A True Hero
In the Greek literature of mythology, we have examined Odysseus. Students and scholars alike debate whether Odysseus was a true hero, as read in
The Odyssey. There is much supporting evidence to prove all sides of the debate and opinions held of Odysseus. It is of my opinion that Odysseus is
a hero in his homeland, his family, the Greek people, and for us to learn from to this day.Odysseus had encompassed three many qualities that I believe
made him a hero. He embodied, mental strength, physical strength, and spiritual strength. I would like to advocate for why Odysseus was a hero.
To support my reasons for my topic, I want to explore Odysseus in the physical strength he had to overcome extreme conditions that he faced on his
journey. For example, during one part of his voyage, Odysseus came upon the Sirens. He knew that if he gave into the temptation of their song, he
would be killed. Odysseus, had made wax in ear plugs for his crew to use when they came upon the journey that the sirens were waiting. When
they began to approach the sirens, he filled the ears of each one of his men with the wax. He chooses not to use the wax. Instead he ordered his
men to bind him hand and foot upright to the mast. He was painfully strapped to the ship, in order to not be pulled into the lair of the siren's song.
Once they past them safely they were safe and he was free. He is a hero to his crew because he made each one of them, the wax for their ears and they
were safe. He thought of

The Illiad by Homer
The first person in The Iliad that can be considered god–like is Trojan prince Hector. He is also a commander on the Trojan side, and he truly the
greatest Trojan warrior. The character of this Trojan hero is dynamic and changes throughout the book. At the beginning of the book he acts like a
great warrior should. He is the most brave out of all the Trojans. Hector leads his army and never fails. In the later part of the book we see Hector as a
brave warrior but we are also introduced to his other side, his fear of death. Although he, like all of the other warriors in the Ancient times, knows
that through the battle he can earn his eternal glory, he cares more about his family and he knows that if the Trojan army fails, the Greeks will kill his
son and take his wife as a slave girl.
We first meet Hector when he is already on the battlefield and he is encouraging his brother Paris after he challenged great Greek warrior, Menelaus.
Hector shows that he is an honorable man, and that fleeing and not fighting is not a way of a real Trojan hero. Paris' brother tells him "...Would to god
you'd never been born, died unwed. That's all I'd ask." he continues saying "Better that way by far than to have u strutting here, an outrage– a mockery
in the eyes of all our enemies..."(3.44–49) Hector tells Paris that he should act like a prince, and he should be more honorable because he is the reason
of the whole Trojan war. Hector calls him a coward and tells him that "...years ago they'd

What Determines When A Boy Becomes A Man?
What determines when a boy becomes a man? Is he supposed to reach a certain age or are his experiences the things that distinguish him as man.
Maybe it is a combination of motivation and guidance that mold a boy into a man. These thoughts and theories have taken a clear spot in the infinite
stack of unanswered questions throughout history. During The Odyssey the reader can experience the theories of Homer's ideas on how to become a
man. Throughout the epic, Homer establishes a clear hypothesis of this transition directly with the character of Telemachus, a feeble child that
eventually surprises many. With the help of the goddess Athena, Homer connects the theme of becoming a man with Telemachus' actions. In The
Odyssey, the sub–story of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Homer slyly hints through his use of the goddess, the admiration and sympathy within Telemachus' words for his nonexistent father,Odysseus.
Although he actually has respect for Odysseus the warrior, the fact that he has no respect for Odysseus the father causes him to be emotionally inept to
confront multiple situations. When Athena explains to him that his father is alive, Telemachus hastily responds that he was born of a man "with the
most dismal fate"(1.230–237). If read in depth, Telemachus is hurt that he never knew his father personally, but underneath his foolish hate, he actually
admires his father as the leader the stories make him out to be. With the help of the goddess, Telemachus finally is able to reach the point of maturity
that enables him to let go of the past and focus on the future.
With Telemachus unhealthy grudge against his void father figure gone, he is able to overcome his abandonment and focus on his new responsibility

Report Prepared by: Report Prepared by: General Dynamics – Through the Lens of a Strategy Consultant General Dynamics – Through the Lens of a
Strategy Consultant EXECUTIVE SUMMARY General Dynamics (GD) has realized a long–standing history of success delivering product and service
solutions since being formed in 1952. They have purposely divested themselves of technology, product and service offerings in an effort to remain
focused on their core competencies and primary customer; the United States Department of Defense. While GD's primary customer remains the DoD,
they have diversified their offerings to adjacent markets within the DoD (e.g, Information Technology and Cybersecurity solutions). GD has also...

Specific to land systems, GD competes against platform providers such as BAE Systems. The barriers to entry are cost prohibitive and the technology
and intellectual capital owned by GD negates any threat of competition. The lack of competition is borderline monopolistic, however an oligopoly is a
better characterization since there is a credible competitor within the combat vehicle market. The outlook for the defense industry remains strong.
Continued technology insertion programs, development of next–generation ground combat vehicle platform and reset of legacy fleet will provide
steady revenue and opportunity for GD. Sales to foreign militaries and coalition forces are expected to grow to offset budget deficits and get rid of
excess capacity attributed to ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. EXTERNAL ANALYSIS Entering the combat systems market is a difficult task
that is capital intensive and requires a unique, game changing solution that can be proven safe, reliable and effective in short order and superior to
industry leaders such as GD. Though the steady growth within the industry and the large contract award values entices new entrants to explore entry,
most will find that it is ultimately not feasible to compete against such industry leaders. The Defense industry, as a whole is faced with increasing

An epic poem outlined by the Oxford English Dictionary says that it's a "lengthy poem, usually one derived from ancient oral custom, narrating the

showing that he is accepting his doomed destiny and that on the alternative side of the Styx his killings are waiting to welcome him.
Achilles meets with Priam, displays sympathy for him, and at last acts based on moral acts, and not by rage. In those ultimate actions of returning

Homer's view of a hero displays bravery, martial abilities, or even friendship. Hector is portrayed as the fitting hero in The Iliad. He exhibits
amazing martial skills by manner of being one of the Trojans' high warriors. Hector also reveals that he loves his family, he's seen as an individual
who is commonly a nice warrior and a loving father. He's very dedicated to his spouse and loves his children. In one scene inside the poem, his son
was petrified of him on account of his good helmet. Hector, seeing this, soon removed his helmet and allow his son comes to him. This reveals that
even though he still fights in a battle, he nonetheless has time to look after his family. Odysseus is another hero who's unwavering in

Impact of Greek Culture on the Romans
The civilization of Rome is one that is remembered today as "the most powerful world state in ancient history" (Fiero 139). From their superior
culture to an army of 300,000 men who behaved as if "they had been born with weapons in their hands", the Roman culture was unparalleled (Fiero
139). The location of Rome on the Italian peninsula put them in a prime location to encounter rich cultures such as the Greeks. Roman culture would
not have been the same if it had not been for the Greeks, because they incorporated multiple aspects of the culture into their everyday life. The
Romans were heavily influenced by Greek philosophy, theology, literature, art, and architecture. Greek philosophy was renowned. So much so that
the Romans modeled their philosophic beliefs around great Greek philosophers such as Aristotle and "absorbed the works of the Epicureans and the
Stoics" (Fiero 143). Philosophy seeped through into other disciplines such as poetry, when Lucretius "popularized the materialist theories of
Democritus and Leucippus" (Fiero 143). Stoicism was used not only to enforce Roman ideals, but also influenced the minds of people such as
Marcus Aurelius. The Romans produced Stoic philosophers such as Epictetus, and Seneca. Greek philosophers provided the foundation, and the
Romans adapted it to fit the needs of their culture, such as to "encourage the Roman sense of duty" (Fiero 143). Romans and the Greeks share many

A writer is a reflection of his age. A work of art is considered a mirror of the customs, culture, and concepts of the age to which it belongs. Homer's
writings are a true representation of this. His Iliad and Odyssey both reflect the old Greek culture, yet in Homeric touch. The meantime the Greek gods

The first physical presentation of Hector as a warrior is in Book VI. In this book, Homer writes one of his master scenes: that of Hector's speech to his
wife and son.
This scene is considered to be a master scene due to many reasons. The reader is first introduced to Hector as a human, not as a warrior. Although
Homer's description at the opening of this scene suggests he is to continue with Hector the warrior, he shifts the focus to a very sincere husband
/ wife speech. The scene opens with Homer's description of Hector as 'Great Hector of the flashing helmet'. The reader is able to see the reflection of
the Sun on Hector's helmet; a scene full of glory. Then, Homer zooms to describe the husband/wife relationship between Hector and his wife. This
conversation started with this fatherly look of Hector to his son:
Hector looked at his son and smiled, but said nothing. Andromache, bursting into tears, went up to him, put her hand in his and said: 'Hector, you are
possessed! This determination of yours will be the death of you. You have no pity on you little boy or luckless wife... so Hector, you are father and
mother and brother to me, as well as my strong husband...
Andromache was trying to stop Hector from going to the war and fight because this means he is to die, she is to be a widow, her son an orphan, and
might be taken by the enemies. Hector's response to his wife perfectly reflects the culture of the age. Hector does care about his wife and son, yet he

The Heroic Code
The life of a warrior is not always filled with glamour and glory. Warriors cannot simply waltz through a tough battle, shedding blood left and right
and taking all the glory and credit for themselves. There are often tough decisions to be made. Warriors also cannot just think of themselves, for
their decisions often affect the lives of others as well. They need the heroic code to guide them in their decision making. In this essay, I will describe
the heroic code and share its applications in the stories of Beowulf, Gilgamesh and Noah, and The Illiad, as well as my other personal experiences. I
will start with the story of The Man of La Mancha, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beowulf's loyalty is most prominent at the end when he fights the dragon. He did not want to fight the dragon because of his age, but felt that he
owed it to the king to do it. Beowulf was so highly revered that everyone was deeply saddened by his death. He truly lived his life exactly to the
Germanic heroic code. Nearly all of Beowulf's actions in this poem follow the heroic code. He saved lives, fought every battle bravely, was loyal
even in situations of life and death, courageous, and rewarded and revered even the warriors underneath him. The fact that he died in battle just means
that he did not only live as a hero but die as one too. The last example of the heroic code in epic stories is from The Epic of Gilgamesh. Similarly to
Beowulf, Achilles, and Hector, Gilgamesh was very strong and very brave, like a typical hero. He is on a quest to be the ultimate hero and achieve
everlasting life. Gilgamesh has fought and won battles against several infamous monsters: Humbaba, the Bull of Heaven, and a pack of vicious
lions. However, even though Gilgamesh was very brave and strong, he was not a good king to his people. He put his own interests before theirs and
ruled with a cruel iron fist, as well as being obsessed with his own legacy.
In conclusion, the heroic code was a set of beliefs and values that guided warriors to make the tough decisions that they would undoubtedly be

Odysseus's Appearance in The Odyssey and the Iliad
In the works we have read so far there are many characters that show up more than once. These characters demonstrate the thoughts of the author they
were written by. We can find information about Greek culture by analyzing the different texts that characters show up in. I am going to argue that
Odysseus is a smart, versatile, and cunning character that shows a different type of masculinity than is portrayed by other characters. The first text that
gives Odysseus a major role is the Iliad. When Agamemnon suggests to his men that they sail home they do not hesitate in agreeing and stream out to
their ships. Odysseus steps in, restrains them and brings them back to the assembly (Homer, Iliad 2.55–225). Odysseus can be seen here as a keeper of
peace and order. He does not allow the men to take the easy way out. Once the men have left the ships the fool, Thersites, begins to shout at
Agamemnon. Odysseus and Achilles both share a mutual hatred of this man because of his constant provocation. Before Odysseus attacks Thersites
physically he takes an opportunity to voice his opinion, calling him "nothing but trash" (Homer, Iliad 2.269). Only after he has delivered a lengthy
speech to the man does he resort to violence, to the joy of all the people watching the scene. They go on to praise him for all the "good things [he] has
done for the Greeks" (Homer, Iliad 2.295). It is notable that he rouses the men with his words, something most of the other heroes do not have the

Potrayal of Women in The Ancient World, The Middle Ages,...
Throughout the three literary periods: The Ancient World, The Middle Ages, and The Renaissance; women have been portrayed and treated in
different ways. The Iliad by Homer is about the Trojan War fought by the Achaeans and Trojans which was over the capturing of the wife of King
Menelaus, Helen of Troy, by Paris. In The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer, it is about a group of 29 people who are all on a pilgrimage to Canterbury
to worship St. Thomas's shrine; however, as Chaucer describes all these types of people not many of them are very religious and the stories they tell
show the perspective and portrayal of women in this time. In Francis Petrarch's poetry Rhymes, he describes his love and admiration for a woman who
doesn't love him back, yet Petrarch still confesses his love for her through his poetry. Through these stories and poems, TheIliad, The Canterbury Tales,
and Rhymes, from the three time periods, the role of women is a progression of how they were looked at and their role in that time period, by men.
In The Iliad by Homer women in the Ancient World period were seen as possessions and property of men and consequently they were inferior to men.
The Iliad begins in the 10th year of the war and starts off with Achilles and Agamemnon fighting over their war prizes, Chryseis and Brieseis.
Chryseis's father, priest of Apollo, asked Menelaus for his daughter back or he would pray to Apollo to send a plague to the Greek camp. Menelaus

Comparing The Iliad And The Aeneid
Homer once said, "Two urns on Jove 's high throne have ever stood, the source of evil one, and one of good; from thence the cup of mortal man he
fills, blessings to these, to those distributes ills; to most he mingles both. What the great philosopher is establishing is that the source of good and evil
are the same while being different. Reminiscent of how The Iliad and the Aeneid are both epic poems that share similarities such as the setting, the
reoccurring motif of gods, as well as aspects like the two heroes and the goals to be reached by the plot.
When comparing the similarities between the two epics, The Iliad and the Aeneid, one of the most obvious is the setting of which they each take
place. They are a part of the same era, one where the world was chaotic and still needed the frivolous gods to meddle. The Trojan Warwith its
destructive power was a significant setting in both poems and led to the development of each respective plot. In the face of the dreads of the
warfare in both epics, even the most powerful of warriors will experience fear, and the poets tell the audience details that both armies regret that the
war ever began. The Iliad took place during the actual war. It is very much centralized around the occurrences of the war. Though the status of fighting
a war is glorified, the men can be seen dying ghastly deaths; women becoming enslaved and shamed, and families torn apart. "Ah, put no faith in
anything the will of the gods opposes! See, Priam's virgin

The Story Of Odysseus And Agamemnon
Many people believe that we live in a parallel with someone else, a person that we will inevitably never meet. But of course, there's no so such thing
as 'never', so there's a chance the stories will meet. They might intertwine themselves together, such as in The Odyssey. This whole concept is so
perfectly stated by Bruce Catton, "And there is a headlight, shining far down the track, glinting off the steel rails that, like all parallel lines, will meet
in infinity, which is after all where this train is going". This quote is powerful, the lines will never meet, until they do. The two lines can be on the
same track, going the same speed, to the same place and not know about the other until they meet. The story of Odysseus and Agamemnon has striking
similarities, not meeting until one point, where the stories barely brush up against each other. But that small window of meeting shows an entire other
story which has already been told, with a different set of names, places and problems. Homer created these character parallels as a way to explain
things, to say things twice, to really help us understand. Odysseus and Agamemnon posses a great deal of qualities that seem almost identical, while at
the same time are also completely different. The main event that happens to both men is something that every great story should have, otherwise
known as a problem. For Odysseus this is repulsive suitors taking charge of his house, running around like they own the place, all because

Animal Imagery And The Classical Period Essay
The use of animal imagery in Greek literature initially appears easy to understand as it is one of the simplest types of comparison found in poetry
from European tradition. In fact, Western culture seems to encourage us to contrast the human world with that of the animal. This habit makes it
easy to assume that no profound meaning can truly be drawn from such a clichГ©d analogy. I have not found this to be the case however when
analysing the use of animal imagery to describe women in the Classical period. Animal imagery, particularly that relating to birds and horses, is
used ingeniously across the period to dissect and often criticise the base nature of women. Women were seen as closer to the natural realm than men
and something to be feared but is it an overgeneralization to suggest that all Greek authors utilise animal imagery when describing women to
negative effect? In this essay I will attempt to illustrate Greek authors' reasons for using animal imagery to describe women and whether Walcott is
right to suggest attitudes towards women in literature and in the Greek world in general were 'conditioned by man's fear of women's sexuality' (1984:
45). One of the most distinctive qualities of Homeric epic is the extensive use of simile, drawn almost entirely from nature. His characters are likened
to 'almost every aspect of the natural world, from locusts to lightning and from bats to beans' (GariГ©py 1973: 89). Homer's use of animal imagery,

Odysseus' Intellectual Development Throughout His Journey

versatile hero, whose development of mental, spiritual, emotional, and intellectual aptitude is higher than his contemporaries'. Odysseus' intellectual

The reader can see that Odysseus' mental capacity is recognized by the people around him. His spirit is uncontainable no matter the situation. It is
only at his weakest point in his journey, when he is trapped on Calypsos' island, that the hero's mental will begins to waver. "By the days found
him sitting on the rocks or sands, torturing himself with tears, groans and heartache, and looking out with streaming eyes across the watery
wilderness" (Homer, 67). His will is threatened by his disconsolate attitude towards being a prisoner for more than 10 years on Calypso' island.
However, this moment of weakness only brings to light the fact that the hero is human, and though his mental support is fallible, it still develops
beyond the point of normal human capability. Throughout Odysseus' adventurous endeavors, he is kept mentally and physically toned by his belief
in the Greek gods and their help. This spiritual growth leads him to call out to Zeus for the blessing that will warrant his safe return home when he
is leaving the Phaeacians to embark on his last voyage home. "I do indeed pray to Zeus the Thunderer, husband or Hera, to let me reach my home and
see the day of my return" (Homer, 106). It becomes apparent that Odysseus; reliance on the help and blessing from the gods is what reassures him in

The Epic Of War And War
For many centuries the best stories that have been told were of battles in war. It is as if humanity gravitates to conflict and suffering. The Iliad was
one of the first great stories of war and was composed three hundred years ago. It illustrates the cause and effects of the Trojan War. After all that time
we wonder why so many military schools and scholars still refer to it for a background reference to what is to know about war. Many believe the war
was glorified in this tale and others believe it was not. If it wasn't a war of glory, why is it such a reference board for even military schools?

According to Bloom the languages and geography and time Homer lived to the time the story was said to take place does not match up. He was able
however to depict the Greek traditions very well as the Greeks did pass through their "heroic age", a time in which the whole Mediterranean world
was marked by wars and confusion and the restless migration of its peoples.
Homer indeed tried to justify this war when he started out with the gods, showing their involvement. The Ionians and Greeks favored the gods in
those days. The Greek gods were an important part of their lives. Therefore referencing the theme of the war premeditated by way of the god's
conflict is way of justifying this event. Homer was saying well this war was inevitable given that it was prophesied by the gods. The main theme in
this poem was the wrath of Achilles but we may want to rethink that and look instead in the theme the wrath of the gods.
When reading this poem you may feel a bit saddened for the Trojan and still feel that same sense of well this war was meant to be anyway. There
was no stopping it give the prince Paris gave the golden apple to Aphrodite who promised her the most beautiful women in the world. The other two
goddesses, Athena and Hera, plotted it where he ends up stealing someone's wife and brought down destruction on his city. This is where the

Achilles is the main character, and, without doubt, the most complex character in Homer's famous poem, The Iliad. Son of the goddess nymph Thetis
and the king of the Myrmidons, Peleus, Achilles is a semi–god, known throughout and beyond Greece for his strength and fighting abilities. Stories on

'Hubris', considered as the only sin for ancient Greeks, is trying to break the holy and sacred order of the cosmos. For Achilles, his arГЄte consists of
attaining his maximum potential, a potential he believes to be grater than a simple mortal; therefore he acts as a god. By thinking he is a god,
Achilles attains 'Hubris', and the consequence for the act of 'Hubris' is 'Nemesis'. Achilles' Nemesis, a deep and hard pain, is the death of one of the
few men he shared compassion and true friendship. At the battlefield, Patroclus has been killed by the Trojan princeHector. Achilles' nemesis, the
death of Patroclus, is a significant pain for Achilles because he realizes that he is responsible for his friend's death. In addition, Achilles' nemesis
reminds him of a fundamental truth: He is not a god. Achilles realizes that he is dependent on the men who surround him, and he accepts his own
death. In fact, by heading back to the war and deciding to revenge his friend's memory by killing Hector, Achilles faces his own death. However, his
rage and anger remain; in fact it is only transferred from Agamemnon to Hector and the Trojans. So, Achilles heads back to the battlefield and his
strength is now greater than before, causing the gods to intervene in the war because "he (Achilles) will raze the wall against the will of fate"

The True Hero: Odysseus
Hercules, Perseus, Theseus, and Achilles are all known as epic or homeristic heroes. They have all had their legendary battles and journeys that have
classified them as an epic hero. Epic heroes all have good and bad qualities, for example Hercules is known as the strongest man in the world, but he is
not that smart. Odysseus is a great example of an epic hero. He is smart, strong, and protected by gods and goddesses, but he does have faults in his
actions considering he is only just a mortal. In Homer's book, The Odyssey, Homer shows how Odysseus is truly an epic hero, by showing his journey
back home to Ithaca.
Odysseus's most known trait of an epic hero is his intelligence. He is always thinking and he is usually one step ahead of everyone else. He was also
the one to come up with the idea of the wooden horse to finally end the Trojan war. On his long journey home, he encountered some obstacles that
could not be overcome with just fighting and strength, like Polyphemus the cyclops. When Odysseus and his crew came upon Polyphemus' island they
helped themselves to his sheep, they then established a plan to blind the cyclops by stabbing him in the eye. Odysseus called himself Noman so that
Polyphemus wouldn't know his real name and tell his brothers who hurt him (Homer 104–108). But Odysseus didn't show his intelligence for long.

The Epic of Beowulf
"Beowulf" is the oldest anglo–saxon poem written in English. The poem describes the heroic deeds of Beowulf in his fight against monsters. Even if
the events narrated in the poem take place in Denmark, the poem was transmitted by oral language between the anglo–saxon even 200 years after its
creation. Anglo–saxons did not consider themselves british, but vikings, and their heroes were always from Scandinavia.
The author of "Beowulf" is anonymous. The original poem was written on sheep tanned leather. "Beowulf" is not only the story of a young man that
gains glory against monsters or of an old king that dies fighting a dragon, but it is the story of a brave man who, once young and invincible, chooses to
fight against the dragon though he knows that he's going to have a tragic end.
"Beowulf" meets all the features of an epic poem: it is a long narration of a national hero ( he is recognized, rewarded and glorified by the king himself
and his people), his travel on the sea, his adventures and the heroic episodes he's the central figure in. Moreover, the main protagonist, Beowulf, is a
brave young man, like Gilgamesh, Achilles or Hercules, with more–than–human strength and wiser, more courageous than others. Unlike the other epic
heroes we have studied untill now, Beowulf is giving us a detailed self–description when he meets the king :"In my youth I have done many glorious

peoples names were different to the names in Homer's time. Some story elements from the tablets appears in the Iliad, proving that this was either ...

Heroes Found in the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer
In Greek culture it is customary to find a very strong social prototype in society , especially in men, heroes are usually found in every story, such is
the case of the literary works of the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer. Homer's poems reflect the qualities that should be found on men of this stage,
these were predominantly heroic values. Is Homer building an ideal world through his poems? Is he writing about the quiet desires of every man and
woman of Greece from these times? The ideal hero has its characteristics embodied into his work, the sense of duty, pride of race, love of glory, the
desire of be the best, and the competitive spirit are the fundamental elements in this heroic tale, we can find many aspects of Greek tradition. We can

The Odyssey By Homer 's Odyssey Essay
Believed to be composed in the 8th century, The Odyssey, is Homer 's epic of Odysseus ' 10–year struggle to return home after the Trojan War.
Odysseus defining character traits, such as nobility, courage, thirst for the glory and the appealing confidence in his authority dominated the storyline
throughout. The many themes of this epic mainly focus around the Greek hero Odysseus however in my essay I will attempt to analyze hospitality.
Hospitality shaped an important part of social interactions in The Odyssey. Although Greek society emphasizes good hospitality and obeying the rules,
some characters in The Odyssey have no respect for this hospitality and are therefore classified as uncivilized, which shows that hospitality organizes
Greek Society.
In different phases of the poetry, the use of symbolism and dimensions of the Greek society and class system is apparent. One of such symbols that
has been used in the poetry is manifested in the form of food. Today, good hospitality is being friendly and respectful to a guest. In Ancient Greece,
hospitality was something people took very seriously because they feared the wrath of Zeus. Zeus's law of hospitality is that any stranger that comes to
your home, the host must be willing to feed, entertain, and maybe offer them a bath and anything else they might need without question until those
things had been given, and also give them a gift. In The Odyssey, most people follow the rules of hospitality, but there are others who do not.

The Iliad: Literary Analysis
Throughout The Iliad, an epic poem written by Homer, there were numerous warriors and other characters that could be looked upon as heroes;
some of these heroes included Achilles, Ajax, Diomedes, Hector, and Glaucus. All of these individuals were heroes because of their remarkable
mental and physical strength: they were courageous and were better fighters in war than other ordinary men. The trade of battle was a way of life to
the Greeks back in Homer's time. Children were raised to become great servicemen to their country, and warriors lived to fight for and defend their
nation with pride and valor. The heroic code was a strict morality that dealt with matters relating to honor and integrity in battle.... Show more content

Achilles possessed superhuman strength, he was swift and agile, he was brave, and he was intelligent. Achilles shows his extraordinary fighting skills
and his intelligence in Book XXII, when he duels against Hector. Achilles manages to kill Hector "...like a high–flown eagle..." with a perfectly timed
stab to "...where the collar–bones hold the neck from the shoulders, the throat, where death of the soul comes most swiftly; in this place brilliant
Achilles drove the spear as he came on in fury, and clean through the soft part of the neck the spearpoint was driven" (Book XXII Lines 324–327). His
intelligence is shown in that he knew a wound to this spot on Hector's neck would be fatal, as Hector was wearing Achilles' old armor that he stole
off the body of Patroclus. An ordinary warrior most likely would not have had the skill with the sword to kill Hector, nor the intelligence to know to
aim for the exact uncovered spot in Hector's neck in the first place. Achilles also shows his bravery before this fight by wanting and agreeing to
actually fight against Hector, who was the strongest warrior of the Trojans and the one person who was believed to actually have a chance in combat
against Achilles.
Additionally, Achilles was the only hero who fought solely for his own heroics, and he was the only one who had a real love for battle and the glory of
winning in war. Achilles' love of war was on par with the love that many other Greeks expressed for their wives and

Essay On Cosmic Irony In The Odyssey

  • 1. Essay on Cosmic Irony in The Odyssey The first element of cosmic irony is fate, and fate has a role in book nine of The Odyssey. It typically involves a powerful deity (or something fate itself) with the ability and desire to manipulate or even control events in a character's life. Fate is demonstrated from many characters. An example of fate is when Odysseus, son of Laertes, blinds Polyphemus, one of the cyclops, after Telemus, Eurymus' son, tells Polyphemus this. "Oh no, no–that prophecy years ago . . ./it all comes home to me with a vengeance now!/We once had a prophet here, a great tall man,/Telemus, Eurymus' son, a master at reading signs,/who grew old in his trade among his fellow–Cyclops./All this, he warned me, would come to pass someday–/that I'd be blinded here ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reality of the situation is that Odysseus must see the Cyclops, which shows his false sense of freewill. Another example is when Odysseus thinks he is being smart when he chooses not to kill Polyphemus and blind him instead, "who'd brave it out with me/to hoist our stake and grind it into his eye/when sleep had overcome him?" (9.371–373). In reality, he must not kill the Cyclops because he must blind him instead since that was what Telemus said it would happen. This defines false sense of freewill because Odysseus thinks that he is brave and smart for coming up with that plan, but he has no other choice than blinding Polyphemus even though he does not know. Really it is a sad example of a cat toying with a mouse; fate is in control of the situation, and Odysseus falsely believes that he can escape the danger and avoid destruction. Cosmic irony also involves two characters playing a game of cat and mouse. It can be defined by the deity of toys with the character much as a cat might with a mouse; the outcome is clear to the disinterested observer, but the mouse hopes desperately for escape. An example of this is between Odysseus and Polyphemus when they keep battling back and forth while Odysseus and his crew are leaving the island. At first Odysseus showing his pride taunts at the Cyclops, "So, Cyclops, no weak coward it was whose crew/you bent to devour there in your vaulted cave–/you with your brute force! ... • 2. Analysis Of Homer 's The Odyssey "Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns ... start from where you will–sing for our time too" (I, 1, 12). From the very beginning, Homer shows his intention for themes of The Odyssey to be applicable in the modern age and essentially "sing for our time" (I, 12). Homer's epic provides the ideal reflection upon the very definition of heroism because it details the strenuous journey of Odysseus, a crafty hero whose key priority is to return home to his family. As one of the most prominent themes, TheOdyssey carries forth the idea of heroism through the portrayal of Odysseus, and establishes a connection with the real world through the expression of life lessons. Consequently, Odysseus is characterized to serve as a role model for the successful hero because, after all, the poem is essentially centered on his very name. However, The Odyssey simultaneously conveys that an entirely perfect hero may be impossible, but a means for improvement is always present. The attributes for success that are revealed in The Odyssey can be examined under interconnected ideas of passion, perseverance, and prowess. Thus, heroism is the most compelling theme of The Odyssey because it exemplifies the attributes for success while also demonstrating that heroes are not without mortal flaws. The attributes for success are vital to the meaning of heroism and rather obvious in the journey of Odysseus: passion, perseverance, and prowess. At the end of the Trojan War, the passion that ... • 3. The works differ because the main characters have different family situations to go home to. Odysseus has a loving wife and son, while Inman does not know if the girl he loves will marry him. Even though the works can be proven different, Cold Mountain and The Odyssey can be compared. The works show how the main characters use basic essentials of life to help the characters return home. The characters' strength to return home comes from food, help from others, and motivation. Life or death ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was a powerful vision, and yet in his mind he saw himself hating every minute of it, his days poisoned by lonesome and longing" (220). Inman realizes he does not want to live alone. Inman knows the importance of people and he needs them to survive. The help from people motivates both Inman and Odysseus to continue their journey home and to not give up. After twenty long years away from his family, Odysseus still has motivation to return to Ithaca. Odysseus could have stayed with the princess of the Phaeacians, but instead he wants to go home to his family. Odysseus' wife, Penelope and their son, Telemachus motivate Odysseus. Alkinoos offers Odysseus his daughter's hand in marriage: "My daughter should be yours and you my son–in–law, if you remained. A home, lands, riches you should have from me if you could be content here" (Homer 120). Odysseus refuses the king's offer: "O Father Zeus, let all this be fulfilled as spoken by Alkinoos! Earth of harvests remember him! Return me to my homeland" (120). Odysseus knows that his family has been waiting for him for years. The motivation to see his family and homeland help Odysseus win his battles and continue his journey home. Inman's motivation to see Ada helps him to continue walking home, fighting through the excruciating pain of his wounds. Inman uses his motivation as strength because he knows it will help him. When Inman finally reaches Cold Mountain he refuses to eat anything until he sees ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Heroic Code Of Honor For A Hero Warriors of ancient Greece were considered heroes by following the Heroic Code of excellence. They achieved this by acquiring a kleos; establishing fame, glory and a positive reputation. It was not an easy task to become a Grecian hero. Building and maintaining kleos meant that a warrior must be brave and strong, be "a speaker of words and a doer of deeds." The solider had to protect his friends and harm his enemies, respect the gods and his elders, and most of all value his honor over his life. To die in battle, and be spoken of after death was the most important act of honor for a hero. The Greek tragedy, Iliad, attributed to Homer, portrays Achilles as the most gallant hero of the Athenian army. The story tells of Achilles, who develops into the greatest hero of the Trojan War. While the end of the end of the poem does portray Achilles as the solider that the story foretells throughout the poem he does not act like that. Many times in the story Achilles actions are perceived as unheroic but ultimately they shape the course of the few weeks of the Trojan Wars described in the Iliad, the Achaean's final victory at Troy and his emergence as a hero. The poem in Book 1 lauds Achilles as the finest warrior of the Athenian army. Nonetheless, when his commanding general, Agamemnon refuses to return to return the captive Chryseis to her father, the priest of Apollo, and a plague ensues, Achilles becomes an insubordinate (disrespecting his commander) by demanding that he return ... • 5. Virgil vs. Homer in Underworld How does Virgil deviate from Homer in the underworld, and why? When comparing "The Aeneid" to "The Odyssey", it is impossible not to notice the similarity between Homer and Virgil 's poems. Both heroes leave Troy, granted one barely escapes and the other leaves victoriously, and both in one sense or the other are trying to reach their home, whether it is the old or future home. The adventures of the two heroes are incredibly similar on a number of accounts with the trip to the underworld being most intriguing. First of all it is important to understand that Homer and Virgil wrote their poems for different reasons; Homer 's "TheOdyssey" was written for entertainment purposes, while Virgil 's "The Aeneid" was written in order to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Aeneas on the other hand is much more focused on the future; he is also trying to get home, but that home does not exist yet, besides that, while seeing his old friends he also finds out about the future of his generations and yet even more about the city he is on his way to establish. This could bring us to the point of Homer 's vs. Virgil 's reasons for writing their poems; as mentioned earlier, Homer wrote his poem for entertainment purposes. This explains why the majority of book eleven is made up of Odysseus meeting his old friends and great warriors of the war; through telling their stories, Homer entertained the readers and the audience by letting them imagine how the heroes act after their death (what still matters to them, which quarrels have not been forgotten etc.). Virgil on the other hand skips most of the greetings of Aeneas with old friends and focuses instead on the meeting with his father. There, while including sentimentality, the main point of the meeting is for Aeneas and the readers to find out about where the rulers of Rome came from. Aeneas in the underworld gets to see, although not speak to, his future son, the future Caesars and learns all about the glory of the future empire. Even the description of the underworld itself may fall ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Analysis Of Homer 's ' The Iliad ' Throughout history, men have been traditionally viewed as superior since the beginning of time. Although, throughout this time, women have held many different roles in society. In the Iliad, Homer portrayed the role of women in his time as having a very suppressive role. Women during this period of time and especially in this culture are treated primarily as merely property and were used for producing material within the household. Women were often taken and given as if they were material belongings, due to their lack of choice and their unfortunate circumstances. However, apart from portraying women as pieces of property, Homer depicts in his Iliad that women are sometimes conceived and introduced as suppliants to their masculine heroines. Homer depicts them as being inferior beings to men both intellectually and physically. Throughout Homer's masterpiece Iliad, women play an important but very modest role that entails their relative significance and the impact they partially have on some of the affairs that take place. The Iliad began with an argument, which is for lack of better terms, a fight over a girl, between Achilles and Agamemnon over Briseis, who was considered to them a war prize. During that time one of the biggest advantages of the Greek army raiding a Trojan allied town was that were able to 'loot' from the town afterwards. They brought back the spoils of the town and whatever they desired and divided them equally amongst the warriors. Agamemnon's price was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. As I Lay Dying and The Odyssey: Books of Epic Quests with... As I lay Dying and the Odyssey As I lay dying and the Odyssey can both be considered books of epic quests with incredible odds. Faulkner takes the title of As I Lay Dying from a line spoken in the Odyssey by the Greek warrior Agamemnon. Agamemnon tells Odysseus when he travels to the Underworld, "As I lay dying, that woman with the dog's eye would not close my eyes as I descended into Hades." Both books give off extraordinary characters, with what some may call outlandish behavior, to possibly throw off the reader from what was expected in such a quest or journey. These two novels seem as to begin in the midst of all the tragedy and situations, using flashbacks and stories of the characters to relate back and give the reader insight of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In another adventure, Odysseus lands on the island of the Greek goddess Circe who turns his men into pigs. Odysseus once again devises a way to cleverly defeat her, save his men, and return to the sea. After his encounter with Circe, Odysseus must journey into the underworld where he meets with his mother and some of his comrades from the Trojan War. ( Kleiner, David. The Odyssey. West Berlin, N.J.: Townsend Press, 2005. Print.) There are many different symbols that link both books together. For Faulkner in As I Lay Dying he uses the Love triangle as Homer did in the Odyssey. From Addie to Anse to Whitfield in As I lay Dying, to Agememnon, to Clytemnestra, to Odysseus in the Odyssey. Along with Elyptsu in the Odyssey falling off the roof and dying, Cash falls off the Church roof and breaks his leg. Not only does Clytemnestra betray him to die at the hands of her lover, she refuses him the mere dignity of proper burial rites. Faulkner uses this same concept in As I Lay Dying, where Addie is denied proper burial by her children and own husband. Along with the dangerous crossing of the proverbial river. Darl is seen as a sort of Cassandra from the "Odyssey", blessed with a second sight which most dismiss as simply "queer," foreseeing the disaster at the river yet unable to stop it or do anything about it. • 8. Chad Pregracke from CNN and Odysseus are Heroes A hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, and/or noble qualities. A hero doesn't have to be a fictional character. Heroes can be found in the real world too. CNN Hero of 2014, Chad Pregracke is known as a hero. This is because he is highly self sacrificing when it comes down to keeping the Earth clean. Odysseus, from the epic poem "The Odyssey", is known as a hero also. The reasoning behind this is because on his way back home to Ithaca, he overcomes many obstacles and shows many traits while doing this. Chad Pregracke and Odysseus both display a number of heroic qualities. Chad Pregracke, an average everyday human being, is not so average after all. He is known as a modern day hero. He shows these traits that make up his hero like description through his thoughts, words, and actions. Pregracke, through his thoughts, shows that he is caring for the environment and its condition. "People intentionally dumped (these) in the river and also littered," Pregracke said. "Even 100 miles away, (trash) will find its way into a creek or a storm drain and into, ultimately, the Mississippi River."(CNN.com) Pregracke is heroically caring because he takes in mind what is going on in the world that could be effecting the environment negatively instead of ignoring it like most people do today. He never thinks about how it could just be ignored or moved past but how the garbage being dumped is hurting the environment and that it should not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Iliad By Ancient Greek Poet Homer Essay The Iliad, written by ancient Greek poet Homer, chronicles the battle and events during the final weeks of The Trojan War, an armed conflict between the Achaeans army and the defenders of Troy. It further recounts the story of the wrath of Achilles, the greatest warrior in the Greek army, against King Agamemnon who unfairly appropriates Briseis, the lovely maiden belonging to Achilles after relinquishing his own maiden, Chryseis, in order to end the plague sweeping the Greek armies. Infuriated by Agamemnon's demands, the dishonored and humiliated Achilles initially withdraws from the king's army and enlists the service of Zeus, king of all gods, to bring upon the Achaean army a devastating loss. He later reconciles with Agamemnon and joins the Greek army to avenge his friend, Patroclus' death, who was killed by Hector, the mightiest warrior in the Trojan army. As Achilles renters the battle, he experiences aristeias his finest, most glorious moments during the conflict as he is able to rout the Trojan army, mercilessly slaughtering them one by one, and dragging the mutilated body of Hector after brutally murdering him. It is only through these fearless, life threatening actions does Achilles achieve everlasting glory, honor and fame, bestowed to him by his community. In Homer'sIliad, Achilles' aristeia supersedes the aristeias of other characters as the warrior is able to display unsurpassed skill and prowess in battle, is motivated to seek the principle of justice for his ... Comparing The Odyssey And O Brother Where Art Thou The "Odyssey", one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer, and "O Brother Where Art Thou", a 2000 a film written, produced, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. At first thought you would not think the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou" and "The Odyssey" have anything in common. It is however, the modern film depiction of the troubles of a man during the depression and is molded by the ancient struggles of Odysseus in Homer's Odyssey. "The Odyssey" is about a Greek warrior and is placed back in the times of mythology. Whereas, "O Brother Where Art Thou" is a movie telling of three escaped criminals trying to find a treasure (which ends up being false), and the adventures and struggles they faced along the way. "The Odyssey" depicted Odysseus' journey back from the Trojan War, which was the story portrayed in The Illiad, to his homeland. It is believed that Homer is not the only author of the epic poems. "The story was memorized and recited by poets and minstrels during a period of several centuries when Greece had no written language." (Russell 151) Around 800 B.C. Homer put the story down in writing. According to Russell the stories are "... about the passions and follies of human beings and for this reason it seems in many ways to be as modern as the current dramas we see on television." "O Brother Where Art Thou" is set in Mississippi in the 1930s and tells of three prisoners who escape prison, hoping to return home to their families. While dodging a ... • 13. The Odyssesy by Homer Epic heroes are usually great leaders and accomplish great deeds and undertake journeys or quests that usually take place in a wide setting such as the world. The epic hero is a "larger than life person" who embodies the highest ideals of his culture and time period. Also, this type of heroes experience human emotions, yet is able to master and control these human traits to a greater degree than a typical human. All of these standard traits were set by Odysseus, the epic hero from the Odyssey, written by Homer. Odysseus embodies the characteristics of the Greeks at the time such as Curiosity, sharp intellect, cunningness all throughout the Odyssey to set the standard for epic heroes for future generations to come. Out of all of Odysseus traits, his cunningness and ability to be an articulate speaker is one of the more prominent traits that shines throughout his journey. Through the odysseys' many bumps and battles Odysseus demonstrates his cunningness and quick thinking at every page. When Odysseus says, "My name is Nohbody: mother, father, friends, everyone calls me Nohbody" (Homer 9.360–361). Odysseus shows his deceptiveness by naming himself Nohbody in future plans of escaping from Polyphemus. In this situation, Odysseus cunningness helps him to escape and get back on track to his journey back to Ithaca. The following demonstrates another example Odysseus' persuasiveness: " My quiet Penelope–how well I know– would seem a shade before your majesty, death and old age ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout the study of the school year and the many texts represented in the curriculum several can be seen as exemplar texts which have made an important and lasting impact on society and literature. In consideration of this fact, five texts stand above the rest including The Iliad, Plato's Republic, Beowulf, Paradise Lost, and A Modest Proposal. Each text influenced the world after it was written and continues to be taught in great detail, separating it from texts of lesser importance. The emphasis of these texts throughout the curriculum is clear and continuously these texts and their authors reemerge in other works of literature. However, the influence and importance of each text can only be determined by the readers as they are the ones to feel the effect. It is these five previously mentioned texts that possibly have had the greatest impact on the culture, history, and literature of not only their geographical locations but on the world as a whole. • 15. Analysis Of ' The Epic Heroes ' Luck of the Hero (An analysis of epic heroes) Often when reading literature, the reader can't help but think that no character could have such qualities as they are portrayed in the story. A classic example of this are the epic heroes that help facilitate the history of important cultures. The epic is a long piece of poetry describing a hero's journey to a better self and complete a mission. These heroes are often extremely brave and smart, which can leave the audience doubting any historical accuracy and believability in the character. These characters face nightmares in real life and live to tell the tale. Epic heroes are, after all, the explanation of a culture's ideal warrior or citizen. However, these heroes also suffer from a tragic flaw, usually hubris or extreme pride in one's self. It is a legitimate question to wonder how a hero can be so incredibily successful with such a large flaw. This question leads many people to assume that luck has a lot to do with the success of the epic hero. Luck can be construed as the universe's way of helping things along. Especially with the early polytheistic cultures, divine intervention was a large theme, and this can serve as the backbone of luck for the epic hero. Odysseus from the Odyssey is a prime example as Athena is a constant aid to him in his long journey home. Odysseus truly thrives from divine luck more than his own personal intelligence or bravery. To begin, Odysseus has extreme wit, but much of it is actually luck ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV) versus the Future Fighting Vehicle (FFV) Programs MSG Torry Rice United States Army Sergeants Major Academy Class 67 Mr. Madera Introduction In the past 15 years, the battlefield has been in the open desert and urban environments. The geographical locations where the United States have fought their wars have had a demand for armored troop vehicles. The Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV) has met and exceeded that demand since 1981. With the possible new threat in Eastern Europe, there is a more demand to have a solid armored troop carrier in the Army's arsenal. The Bradley is the right vehicle for the current and possible future threats. The Army wants to erase the M2A3 BFV from its inventory and replace it with a new and improved fighting vehicle. Replacing the Bradley without doing an effective cost analysis would be a huge loss to the Army's budget plan. This would be detrimental especially when the Bradley is not the only vehicle program the Army is trying to replace. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the rationality behind not replacing the BFV at this time. Background Between 1950 and 1960, the Army was developing a plan to transport infantry troops in a specialized armored vehicle. The first transport vehicle was the M113. This vehicle would transform over the years until 1981 when the Bradley Fighting Vehicle was introduced into the Army's arsenal. This armored vehicle got its name from a World War II General ... There is much supporting evidence to prove all sides of the debate and opinions held of Odysseus. It is of my opinion that Odysseus is a hero in his homeland, his family, the Greek people, and for us to learn from to this day.Odysseus had encompassed three many qualities that I believe made him a hero. He embodied, mental strength, physical strength, and spiritual strength. I would like to advocate for why Odysseus was a hero. To support my reasons for my topic, I want to explore Odysseus in the physical strength he had to overcome extreme conditions that he faced on his journey. For example, during one part of his voyage, Odysseus came upon the Sirens. He knew that if he gave into the temptation of their song, he would be killed. Odysseus, had made wax in ear plugs for his crew to use when they came upon the journey that the sirens were waiting. When they began to approach the sirens, he filled the ears of each one of his men with the wax. He chooses not to use the wax. Instead he ordered his men to bind him hand and foot upright to the mast. He was painfully strapped to the ship, in order to not be pulled into the lair of the siren's song. Once they past them safely they were safe and he was free. He is a hero to his crew because he made each one of them, the wax for their ears and they were safe. He thought of ... Hector leads his army and never fails. In the later part of the book we see Hector as a brave warrior but we are also introduced to his other side, his fear of death. Although he, like all of the other warriors in the Ancient times, knows that through the battle he can earn his eternal glory, he cares more about his family and he knows that if the Trojan army fails, the Greeks will kill his son and take his wife as a slave girl. We first meet Hector when he is already on the battlefield and he is encouraging his brother Paris after he challenged great Greek warrior, Menelaus. Hector shows that he is an honorable man, and that fleeing and not fighting is not a way of a real Trojan hero. Paris' brother tells him "...Would to god you'd never been born, died unwed. That's all I'd ask." he continues saying "Better that way by far than to have u strutting here, an outrage– a mockery in the eyes of all our enemies..."(3.44–49) Hector tells Paris that he should act like a prince, and he should be more honorable because he is the reason of the whole Trojan war. • 25. Impact of Greek Culture on the Romans The civilization of Rome is one that is remembered today as "the most powerful world state in ancient history" (Fiero 139). From their superior culture to an army of 300,000 men who behaved as if "they had been born with weapons in their hands", the Roman culture was unparalleled (Fiero 139). The location of Rome on the Italian peninsula put them in a prime location to encounter rich cultures such as the Greeks. Roman culture would not have been the same if it had not been for the Greeks, because they incorporated multiple aspects of the culture into their everyday life. The Romans were heavily influenced by Greek philosophy, theology, literature, art, and architecture. Greek philosophy was renowned. So much so that the Romans modeled their philosophic beliefs around great Greek philosophers such as Aristotle and "absorbed the works of the Epicureans and the Stoics" (Fiero 143). Philosophy seeped through into other disciplines such as poetry, when Lucretius "popularized the materialist theories of Democritus and Leucippus" (Fiero 143). Stoicism was used not only to enforce Roman ideals, but also influenced the minds of people such as Marcus Aurelius. The Romans produced Stoic philosophers such as Epictetus, and Seneca. This scene is considered to be a master scene due to many reasons. The reader is first introduced to Hector as a human, not as a warrior. Although Homer's description at the opening of this scene suggests he is to continue with Hector the warrior, he shifts the focus to a very sincere husband / wife speech. The scene opens with Homer's description of Hector as 'Great Hector of the flashing helmet'. The reader is able to see the reflection of the Sun on Hector's helmet; a scene full of glory. Then, Homer zooms to describe the husband/wife relationship between Hector and his wife. This conversation started with this fatherly look of Hector to his son: Hector looked at his son and smiled, but said nothing. Andromache, bursting into tears, went up to him, put her hand in his and said: 'Hector, you are possessed! This determination of yours will be the death of you. Warriors cannot simply waltz through a tough battle, shedding blood left and right and taking all the glory and credit for themselves. There are often tough decisions to be made. Warriors also cannot just think of themselves, for their decisions often affect the lives of others as well. They need the heroic code to guide them in their decision making. He did not want to fight the dragon because of his age, but felt that he owed it to the king to do it. Beowulf was so highly revered that everyone was deeply saddened by his death. He truly lived his life exactly to the Germanic heroic code. Nearly all of Beowulf's actions in this poem follow the heroic code. He saved lives, fought every battle bravely, was loyal even in situations of life and death, courageous, and rewarded and revered even the warriors underneath him. The fact that he died in battle just means that he did not only live as a hero but die as one too. The last example of the heroic code in epic stories is from The Epic of Gilgamesh. Similarly to Beowulf, Achilles, and Hector, Gilgamesh was very strong and very brave, like a typical hero. He is on a quest to be the ultimate hero and achieve everlasting life. • 29. Odysseus's Appearance in The Odyssey and the Iliad In the works we have read so far there are many characters that show up more than once. These characters demonstrate the thoughts of the author they were written by. We can find information about Greek culture by analyzing the different texts that characters show up in. I am going to argue that Odysseus is a smart, versatile, and cunning character that shows a different type of masculinity than is portrayed by other characters. The first text that gives Odysseus a major role is the Iliad. When Agamemnon suggests to his men that they sail home they do not hesitate in agreeing and stream out to their ships. Odysseus steps in, restrains them and brings them back to the assembly (Homer, Iliad 2.55–225). Odysseus can be seen here as a keeper of peace and order. He does not allow the men to take the easy way out. Once the men have left the ships the fool, Thersites, begins to shout at Agamemnon. Odysseus and Achilles both share a mutual hatred of this man because of his constant provocation. Before Odysseus attacks Thersites physically he takes an opportunity to voice his opinion, calling him "nothing but trash" (Homer, Iliad 2.269). Only after he has delivered a lengthy speech to the man does he resort to violence, to the joy of all the people watching the scene. They go on to praise him for all the "good things [he] has done for the Greeks" (Homer, Iliad 2.295). • 30. Potrayal of Women in The Ancient World, The Middle Ages,... Throughout the three literary periods: The Ancient World, The Middle Ages, and The Renaissance; women have been portrayed and treated in different ways. The Iliad by Homer is about the Trojan War fought by the Achaeans and Trojans which was over the capturing of the wife of King Menelaus, Helen of Troy, by Paris. In The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer, it is about a group of 29 people who are all on a pilgrimage to Canterbury to worship St. Thomas's shrine; however, as Chaucer describes all these types of people not many of them are very religious and the stories they tell show the perspective and portrayal of women in this time. In Francis Petrarch's poetry Rhymes, he describes his love and admiration for a woman who doesn't love him back, yet Petrarch still confesses his love for her through his poetry. Through these stories and poems, TheIliad, The Canterbury Tales, and Rhymes, from the three time periods, the role of women is a progression of how they were looked at and their role in that time period, by men. In The Iliad by Homer women in the Ancient World period were seen as possessions and property of men and consequently they were inferior to men. The Iliad begins in the 10th year of the war and starts off with Achilles and Agamemnon fighting over their war prizes, Chryseis and Brieseis. Comparing The Iliad And The Aeneid Homer once said, "Two urns on Jove 's high throne have ever stood, the source of evil one, and one of good; from thence the cup of mortal man he fills, blessings to these, to those distributes ills; to most he mingles both. What the great philosopher is establishing is that the source of good and evil are the same while being different. Reminiscent of how The Iliad and the Aeneid are both epic poems that share similarities such as the setting, the reoccurring motif of gods, as well as aspects like the two heroes and the goals to be reached by the plot. When comparing the similarities between the two epics, The Iliad and the Aeneid, one of the most obvious is the setting of which they each take place. They are a part of the same era, one where the world was chaotic and still needed the frivolous gods to meddle. The Trojan Warwith its destructive power was a significant setting in both poems and led to the development of each respective plot. In the face of the dreads of the warfare in both epics, even the most powerful of warriors will experience fear, and the poets tell the audience details that both armies regret that the war ever began. The Iliad took place during the actual war. It is very much centralized around the occurrences of the war. But of course, there's no so such thing as 'never', so there's a chance the stories will meet. They might intertwine themselves together, such as in The Odyssey. This whole concept is so perfectly stated by Bruce Catton, "And there is a headlight, shining far down the track, glinting off the steel rails that, like all parallel lines, will meet in infinity, which is after all where this train is going". This quote is powerful, the lines will never meet, until they do. The two lines can be on the same track, going the same speed, to the same place and not know about the other until they meet. The story of Odysseus and Agamemnon has striking similarities, not meeting until one point, where the stories barely brush up against each other. But that small window of meeting shows an entire other story which has already been told, with a different set of names, places and problems. Homer created these character parallels as a way to explain things, to say things twice, to really help us understand. Odysseus and Agamemnon posses a great deal of qualities that seem almost identical, while at the same time are also completely different. The main event that happens to both men is something that every great story should have, otherwise known as a problem. For Odysseus this is repulsive suitors taking charge of his house, running around like they own the place, all because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Animal Imagery And The Classical Period Essay The use of animal imagery in Greek literature initially appears easy to understand as it is one of the simplest types of comparison found in poetry from European tradition. In fact, Western culture seems to encourage us to contrast the human world with that of the animal. This habit makes it easy to assume that no profound meaning can truly be drawn from such a clichГ©d analogy. I have not found this to be the case however when analysing the use of animal imagery to describe women in the Classical period. Animal imagery, particularly that relating to birds and horses, is used ingeniously across the period to dissect and often criticise the base nature of women. Women were seen as closer to the natural realm than men and something to be feared but is it an overgeneralization to suggest that all Greek authors utilise animal imagery when describing women to negative effect? In this essay I will attempt to illustrate Greek authors' reasons for using animal imagery to describe women and whether Walcott is right to suggest attitudes towards women in literature and in the Greek world in general were 'conditioned by man's fear of women's sexuality' (1984: 45). One of the most distinctive qualities of Homeric epic is the extensive use of simile, drawn almost entirely from nature. His characters are likened to 'almost every aspect of the natural world, from locusts to lightning and from bats to beans' (GariГ©py 1973: 89). Homer's use of animal imagery, although most often expressed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Odysseus' Intellectual Development Throughout His Journey Odysseus develops throughout his journey in many ways both spiritually and physically. These developments help him adapt to his surroundings and transform him into a better person. Throughout the epic poem, Odysseus' entire person is reconstructed from that of a soldier in the Trojan War to a versatile hero, whose development of mental, spiritual, emotional, and intellectual aptitude is higher than his contemporaries'. Odysseus' intellectual development in "The Odyssey" is a returning subject regularly as his journey unfolds. From the beginning of his journey, Odysseus shows higher intellectual capacity than everyone around him. He displays an adroit cunning numerous times in "The Odyssey" to ensure his, and his men's, safety. For ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reader can see that Odysseus' mental capacity is recognized by the people around him. His spirit is uncontainable no matter the situation. It is only at his weakest point in his journey, when he is trapped on Calypsos' island, that the hero's mental will begins to waver. "By the days found him sitting on the rocks or sands, torturing himself with tears, groans and heartache, and looking out with streaming eyes across the watery wilderness" (Homer, 67). His will is threatened by his disconsolate attitude towards being a prisoner for more than 10 years on Calypso' island. However, this moment of weakness only brings to light the fact that the hero is human, and though his mental support is fallible, it still develops beyond the point of normal human capability. Throughout Odysseus' adventurous endeavors, he is kept mentally and physically toned by his belief in the Greek gods and their help. This spiritual growth leads him to call out to Zeus for the blessing that will warrant his safe return home when he is leaving the Phaeacians to embark on his last voyage home. "I do indeed pray to Zeus the Thunderer, husband or Hera, to let me reach my home and see the day of my return" (Homer, 106). It becomes apparent that Odysseus; reliance on the help and blessing from the gods is what reassures him in his time of suffering. Eventually, his spiritual development reaches a point where he ... • 35. The Epic Of War And War For many centuries the best stories that have been told were of battles in war. It is as if humanity gravitates to conflict and suffering. The Iliad was one of the first great stories of war and was composed three hundred years ago. It illustrates the cause and effects of the Trojan War. After all that time we wonder why so many military schools and scholars still refer to it for a background reference to what is to know about war. Many believe the war was glorified in this tale and others believe it was not. If it wasn't a war of glory, why is it such a reference board for even military schools? Bloom wrote, "Even long after the decline of Greece itself, the Homeric epics would continue to form the mainstay of Western education and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Bloom) According to Bloom the languages and geography and time Homer lived to the time the story was said to take place does not match up. He was able however to depict the Greek traditions very well as the Greeks did pass through their "heroic age", a time in which the whole Mediterranean world was marked by wars and confusion and the restless migration of its peoples. Homer indeed tried to justify this war when he started out with the gods, showing their involvement. The Ionians and Greeks favored the gods in those days. The Greek gods were an important part of their lives. Therefore referencing the theme of the war premeditated by way of the god's conflict is way of justifying this event. Homer was saying well this war was inevitable given that it was prophesied by the gods. The main theme in this poem was the wrath of Achilles but we may want to rethink that and look instead in the theme the wrath of the gods. When reading this poem you may feel a bit saddened for the Trojan and still feel that same sense of well this war was meant to be anyway. There was no stopping it give the prince Paris gave the golden apple to Aphrodite who promised her the most beautiful women in the world. The other two goddesses, Athena and Hera, plotted it where he ends up stealing someone's wife and brought down destruction on his city. • 36. Achilles: God or Beast? Title Joel Abudarham World Views–Ancient Greek Civilization Marie Michelle Wilband "He who is unable to live in society, or who has no need because he is sufficient for himself, must be either a beast or a god." –Aristotle Tuesday October 2nd, 2012 Achilles is the main character, and, without doubt, the most complex character in Homer's famous poem, The Iliad. Son of the goddess nymph Thetis and the king of the Myrmidons, Peleus, Achilles is a semi–god, known throughout and beyond Greece for his strength and fighting abilities. Stories on the epic hero Achilles are numerous, like the legend of Prometheus', the fore thinker, prophecy regarding the birth of Thetis' son, or the legend of Achilles bathing in the Styx River. ... For Achilles, his arГЄte consists of attaining his maximum potential, a potential he believes to be grater than a simple mortal; therefore he acts as a god. By thinking he is a god, Achilles attains 'Hubris', and the consequence for the act of 'Hubris' is 'Nemesis'. Achilles' Nemesis, a deep and hard pain, is the death of one of the few men he shared compassion and true friendship. At the battlefield, Patroclus has been killed by the Trojan princeHector. Achilles' nemesis, the death of Patroclus, is a significant pain for Achilles because he realizes that he is responsible for his friend's death. In addition, Achilles' nemesis reminds him of a fundamental truth: He is not a god. Achilles realizes that he is dependent on the men who surround him, and he accepts his own death. In fact, by heading back to the war and deciding to revenge his friend's memory by killing Hector, Achilles faces his own death. However, his rage and anger remain; in fact it is only transferred from Agamemnon to Hector and the Trojans. So, Achilles heads back to the battlefield and his strength is now greater than before, causing the gods to intervene in the war because "he (Achilles) will raze the wall against the will of fate" according to Zeus.

  • 38. The True Hero: Odysseus Hercules, Perseus, Theseus, and Achilles are all known as epic or homeristic heroes. They have all had their legendary battles and journeys that have classified them as an epic hero. Epic heroes all have good and bad qualities, for example Hercules is known as the strongest man in the world, but he is not that smart. Odysseus is a great example of an epic hero. He is smart, strong, and protected by gods and goddesses, but he does have faults in his actions considering he is only just a mortal. In Homer's book, The Odyssey, Homer shows how Odysseus is truly an epic hero, by showing his journey back home to Ithaca. Odysseus's most known trait of an epic hero is his intelligence. He is always thinking and he is usually one step ahead of everyone else. He was also the one to come up with the idea of the wooden horse to finally end the Trojan war. On his long journey home, he encountered some obstacles that could not be overcome with just fighting and strength, like Polyphemus the cyclops. When Odysseus and his crew came upon Polyphemus' island they helped themselves to his sheep, they then established a plan to blind the cyclops by stabbing him in the eye. Odysseus called himself Noman so that Polyphemus wouldn't know his real name and tell his brothers who hurt him (Homer 104–108). But Odysseus didn't show his intelligence for long. When him and his men got away from the cyclops and were on their ship, Odysseus yelled, "I say, Cyclops! if ever anyone asks you who put our your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Epic of Beowulf "Beowulf" is the oldest anglo–saxon poem written in English. The poem describes the heroic deeds of Beowulf in his fight against monsters. Even if the events narrated in the poem take place in Denmark, the poem was transmitted by oral language between the anglo–saxon even 200 years after its creation. Anglo–saxons did not consider themselves british, but vikings, and their heroes were always from Scandinavia. The author of "Beowulf" is anonymous. The original poem was written on sheep tanned leather. "Beowulf" is not only the story of a young man that gains glory against monsters or of an old king that dies fighting a dragon, but it is the story of a brave man who, once young and invincible, chooses to fight against the dragon though he knows that he's going to have a tragic end. "Beowulf" meets all the features of an epic poem: it is a long narration of a national hero ( he is recognized, rewarded and glorified by the king himself and his people), his travel on the sea, his adventures and the heroic episodes he's the central figure in. Moreover, the main protagonist, Beowulf, is a brave young man, like Gilgamesh, Achilles or Hercules, with more–than–human strength and wiser, more courageous than others. Unlike the other epic heroes we have studied untill now, Beowulf is giving us a detailed self–description when he meets the king :"In my youth I have done many glorious deed. The Achilles mentioned in the tablet was a shepherd, not a king or warrior, but the fact that the name is an authentic Bronze Age name is important. The geologists compared present geology with the landscapes and coastal features described by Homer in the Illiad and other classical sources. They came to the conclusion that there is a regular consistency between the location of Troy as Hisarlik, the geological evidence and the topography and accounts of battles described in the Iliad. • 41. Heroes Found in the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer In Greek culture it is customary to find a very strong social prototype in society , especially in men, heroes are usually found in every story, such is the case of the literary works of the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer. Homer's poems reflect the qualities that should be found on men of this stage, these were predominantly heroic values. Is Homer building an ideal world through his poems? Is he writing about the quiet desires of every man and woman of Greece from these times? The ideal hero has its characteristics embodied into his work, the sense of duty, pride of race, love of glory, the desire of be the best, and the competitive spirit are the fundamental elements in this heroic tale, we can find many aspects of Greek tradition. We can capture the spirit of the time with their values, beliefs, customs and culture among others. Because of its cultural, historical and social system, the Iliad poem can be situated in the ninth century of the Greek history, this work tells the story of the Trojans and describes the town of Sparta, also the relationship of heroes and kings with gods or prophets; this work goes deep on the high side of society, the nobles, the lives of the kings, and also on the other hand, we have the soldiers both Greeks and Trojans, as they defend their countries from the conflict of the Gods. • 42. The Odyssey By Homer 's Odyssey Essay Believed to be composed in the 8th century, The Odyssey, is Homer 's epic of Odysseus ' 10–year struggle to return home after the Trojan War. Odysseus defining character traits, such as nobility, courage, thirst for the glory and the appealing confidence in his authority dominated the storyline throughout. The many themes of this epic mainly focus around the Greek hero Odysseus however in my essay I will attempt to analyze hospitality. Hospitality shaped an important part of social interactions in The Odyssey. Although Greek society emphasizes good hospitality and obeying the rules, some characters in The Odyssey have no respect for this hospitality and are therefore classified as uncivilized, which shows that hospitality organizes Greek Society. In different phases of the poetry, the use of symbolism and dimensions of the Greek society and class system is apparent. One of such symbols that has been used in the poetry is manifested in the form of food. Today, good hospitality is being friendly and respectful to a guest. In Ancient Greece, hospitality was something people took very seriously because they feared the wrath of Zeus. Zeus's law of hospitality is that any stranger that comes to your home, the host must be willing to feed, entertain, and maybe offer them a bath and anything else they might need without question until those things had been given, and also give them a gift. In The Odyssey, most people follow the rules of hospitality, but there are others who do not. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. The Iliad: Literary Analysis The Iliad: Literary Analysis Throughout The Iliad, an epic poem written by Homer, there were numerous warriors and other characters that could be looked upon as heroes; some of these heroes included Achilles, Ajax, Diomedes, Hector, and Glaucus. All of these individuals were heroes because of their remarkable mental and physical strength: they were courageous and were better fighters in war than other ordinary men. The trade of battle was a way of life to the Greeks back in Homer's time. Children were raised to become great servicemen to their country, and warriors lived to fight for and defend their nation with pride and valor. The heroic code was a strict morality that dealt with matters relating to honor and integrity in battle.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Achilles possessed superhuman strength, he was swift and agile, he was brave, and he was intelligent. Achilles shows his extraordinary fighting skills and his intelligence in Book XXII, when he duels against Hector. Achilles manages to kill Hector "...like a high–flown eagle..." with a perfectly timed stab to "...where the collar–bones hold the neck from the shoulders, the throat, where death of the soul comes most swiftly; in this place brilliant Achilles drove the spear as he came on in fury, and clean through the soft part of the neck the spearpoint was driven" (Book XXII Lines 324–327). His intelligence is shown in that he knew a wound to this spot on Hector's neck would be fatal, as Hector was wearing Achilles' old armor that he stole off the body of Patroclus. An ordinary warrior most likely would not have had the skill with the sword to kill Hector, nor the intelligence to know to aim for the exact uncovered spot in Hector's neck in the first place. Achilles also shows his bravery before this fight by wanting and agreeing to actually fight against Hector, who was the strongest warrior of the Trojans and the one person who was believed to actually have a chance in combat against Achilles. Additionally, Achilles was the only hero who fought solely for his own heroics, and he was the only one who had a real love for battle and the glory of winning in war.
