2. Males
In our media product males are represented in two different ways.
One being the stereotypical male (Jamie) who is trying to solve the problem and fix everything using a
great amount of bravery and courage to fur fill this. This is shown in our product as they had done
something incredibly bad but Jamie was keeping it together, showing he is strong and has a lot of power
over the situation. The usual athletics that a stereotypical man has, is shown through Jamie vaulting and
running for a continues amount of time to try and save Linden.
However the other male is shown as the complete opposite (Linden) scared to live up to what he has done,
as he always uses the easy way out. He shows no power and his life is run by fear. This is shown as Linden
ends his life due to the fact he couldn’t live up to the thing they had done, which shows that he is not
willing to try and fix things for his self, and relies on other to do this for him, which goes against the
stereotypical man which is dominant and does not like other people to help as he gets a sense of
achievement from doing things his self.
Linden in our film also gives an awareness to others, teaching them that it is not only girls who are
depressed and suicidal, and shows that both genders are capable of doing this. We used the character
Linden to show that male suicides aren’t as rare as people may think and in fact around 25% of suicides are
males, we also used the title blackmail to show what results blackmail can have on a human being, and that
blackmail shouldn’t be used against someone, even though our film is dark we have tried to use it to raise
awareness for suicide.
The fact that our cast is mostly males may mean that our media product appeals more to males, so the
male to woman ratio will be more to the male side for our film. Also the fact that it shows two side to
males it may attract the less stereotypical males out there.
3. Age
Most of our cast is at a young age such as Jamie and Linden. Showing that at a young
age you make a lot of mistakes, such as driving under the influence of alcohol as you are
a lot more immature and vulnerable as you do not think things out, such as risk and so
on as the brain is not fully developed. In our film the mistake they make is driving under
the influence and running over a child and discarding the evidence even though the
parent was watching, which will haunt them for along time.
This has been used to try and show that if you do not think of the risk before following
something through you can end up messing up the rest of your life, so you should
always think things through.
There is also an older character in our film which makes Jamie and Linden do things they
don’t want to do, and if they don’t theyll go to the police and say what they did
(blackmail). This has been used to show that the younger generation is easier to take
advantage of.
The fact that our cast is mostly of a younger age means it may attract a younger
audience, which applies to our age limit of 15.
4. Ethnicity
In our film race doesn’t matter as this could happen to anyone, and the acts they carried
out could be replicated by either black or whites. There was no need for a token
character or anything as this film isn’t based on the colour of skin. It focuses on mental
illness.
Mental illness
• In our media product Linden, is shown to be suffering from
depression which causes him to finally take his life, as he can’t
face the pressure of following these acts from the blackmailer.
