Question Four
1. How does your
Media product
present particular
social groups?
Wrote by Georgia and discussed between the both of us
2. Targeted audience
• We decided for our films target audience to be
15+ because of the content within our film.
There shall be censored words further into the
story, another reason we have decided on this
target audience is because of the event that
occur in the storyline. Slowly it becomes
obvious that the main character within the film
(Dean) is a rapist which then involves a sexual
field, this is the main reason to why we have
chosen the age.
3. Class
• Our production is target towards the middle
class. We have presented this class through our
main character Dean as when we are first
introduced to him where he is seen to be
leading a normal middle-class life with a average
wage earning job. The costume he wears in the
opening scene is a casual shirt and black
trousers, nothing expensive or basic.
4. Gender
• Both characters within the opening are both male
however deeper into the film we will see the
introduction to female characters. A stereotypical
rapist is normally seen as a male in todays society
so this is why we decided to use a male to play the
character. This then connects more with the
audience and they should find the story easier to
follow however we are not promoting that all
rapists are male. There has been many cases in
which women have been charged against this
crime and we should equally be aware that both
genders are capable of committing the same
crimes.
5. Sexuality
• We portray the ‘rapist’ as being heterosexual,
as it continues on with the stereotype of a
man victimizing a younger girl, which is found
in many films such as ‘The Orphan’ when the
male being the rapist continues the
heterosexual stereotype.
6. Family
• Throughout the production we use the use of
family to get the audience to emphasize with the
grieving family, as more than one person are
affected by the assault. Families within our
production are shown as being a part of the
victims, not the main victim but a collective group
of people who feel the young girls pain. These
people are demonstrated as being ‘one’ and stand
united while trying to get revenge on the ‘alleged
rapist’ which then leads to even more problems.
7. Race
• Race isn’t something which we don’t really show
in our production as to be an important subject.
The opening starts with two Caucasian men but as
the film resumes we de begin to show varied races
and ethnicities. We present the white male as
being someone who is sexually driven and one
who knows they shouldn’t but still performs illegal
actions, while there are hundreds of stereotypes
for all different races, we do not follow any of
these and we are not focusing on characters /
actors for their ethnicities.
