It started in 1583. Sir Humphrey Gilbert organized the enterprise. He ended up drowning while
attempting to colonize St. John's, Newfoundland. Sir Walter Raleigh, his half–brother, was chosen to
take over. On March 25, 1584, Raleigh was granted a charter by Queen Elizabeth I to colonize in
North America. The first colony was established in 1584 on Roanoke Island, what is now Dare
County, North Carolina, but over the course of two years they went through some hardships. They
thought the native village of Aquascogoc stole a silver cup, and thus attacked the village. They
remained anyway, even with the lack of food, and some men went back to England to grab more
troops and supplies. In the meantime, from attacking the native village, the colonists were attacked,

slaves, " said George Gordon Byron. Though slavery has never had a universal definition, one might
describe it as the dependent labour by one person performed to another who is not of his or her
family. It was thought to have come about after a dramatic labour shortage in particular areas or
countries. In America, slavery has always been a highly debated topic throughout the years. Often,
people associate slavery with words such as "brutal, cruel, inhumane, and horrible". Slaves were
forced to forget about freedom and about the liberties of life that Americans now take for granted.
During the years 1775 to 1830, African American slavery saw simultaneously the freedom of many
colored men and the enlargement of the institution of slavery. The free and enslaved African
Americans had different methods in approaching the challenges in front of them. The demand for a
labor force in the production of cotton encouraged the expansion of slavery; however, due to
increasing national identity, the republican value of equality and freedom denounced the systems of
slavery, allowing for a more widespread bondage; the free slaves in the North focused on tangible
reasons for freedom, while the enslaved African Americans in the South focused gaining freedom

waves crashing against the ships on the coast can be heard off in the distant. Sir Walter Raleigh 's
explorers Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe steps foot on the sand of the beach of what is now

The second program I am going to talk about is the Henderson County D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse
Resistance Education) program. The D.A.R.E. program started in 1983 in Los Angeles, California as
a partnership between parents, schools and law enforcement to educate children on the
consequences of drug abuse and teaching good decision making skills to enable them to live
productive drug and violence–free lives (2). The Henderson County branch started in 1985 in
several schools in Henderson County as a pilot program for North Carolina and was implemented in

If you compared the revolts in the United states to Brazil or the West Indies it would be smaller and
less frequent. Slaves would be begin to resist by either the "day–to–day resistance" or even "silent
sabotage" which was pretty much doing poor work, breaking tools, abusing animals, and even

During the 1500's, the English started their first attempts at colonizing in the New World. One of the
first colonies to settle in North America was named after the island on which they settled. That
island was named the Roanoke Island. After a while of living on the island the colony had to return
to England, since there had been a shortage of food and they had been attacked by nearby indians
multiple times. A second group of English settlers also tried to settle on the island, but got there too
late. They were not able to farm nor did they have enough supplies for everyone. The colony failed
to accomplish their settlement on the island and quickly went back to England. Afterwards , a third
group of colonists decided to settle in the New World. When they went low on supplies, the leader
of the group decided to return to England, but when he tried to return, he was delayed. He returned
three years later to find that the colony had vanished mysteriously with no trace. Many historians
and anthropologists indicate different theoretical possibilities such as; the colony simply left the
settlement and somehow split up, decided to live with the neighbored, Croatoan indians, or were

Keetoowah is the name of the ancient Cherokee town in the eastern homelands, said to be the

It jeopardized the Cherokee's clan traditional ways of a matrilineal family structure carried on for
many centuries. Nevertheless, the Cherokees could do nothing about it.
Before the first known contacts, life of the Cherokee nation had grown and thrived for many years in
the southeastern United States in the lower Appalachian Mountains in states such as: Georgia,
Tennessee, North and South Carolina, and parts of Kentucky and Alabama. However, the first
recorded contact with outsiders was Hernado De Soto in his expedition of 1540, in search of gold
throughout the Cherokee county (Martin). Mr. Soto found no trace of gold and returned empty
handed. The Spanish explorers noticed the Cherokee village they encountered was practically
deserted. Many of the tribes would flee from the sight of the unknown. About 100 years later,
Abraham Wood, a Virginian, sent two men, James Needham and Gabriel Arthur in 1673 to establish
trade (Martin). One of the traders begun to establish his home among the Cherokee Indians, which
didn't last for long before he was killed. Even though many explorers tried to establish trades, life of
the traditional Cherokee remained unchanged as late as 1710, which is marked as the beginning of
Cherokee trade with the whites (Trail of Tears). The white mans influential politics came slowly

On April 27, 1584, Raleigh dispatched a journey led by Phillip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to
search for the Eastern coast of North America. They arrived on Roanoke Island on July 4, and
almost immediately recognized relations with the local citizens, the Sectoans and Croatans. Barlowe
returned to England with two Croatans named Manteo and Wanchese, who were able to explain the
government and natural features of the region to Raleigh. Based on this knowledge, Raleigh
prepared a second journey, to be led by Sir Richard Grenville.
Greenville's convoy departed Plymouth on April 9, 1585, with five major ships: the Tiger
(Grenville's), the Roebuck, the Red Lion, the Elizabeth, and the Dorothy. Consequently, a harsh
rainstorm off the shore of Portugal divided the Tiger from the rest of the convoy. The captains had
an unforeseen event plan if they were divided, which was to get together up again in Puerto Rico,
and the Tiger reached in the "Baye of Muskito" (Guayanilla Bay) on May 11.
While anticipating for the additional ships, Grenville recognized relations with the Spanish there
while concurrently engaging in some privateering in opposition to them, and also built a fort. The
Elizabeth arrived almost immediately after the fort's creation. Eventually, Grenville worn–out off
anticipating or the remaining ships, and departed on June 7. The fort was discarded, and its site
remains unknown.

The red wolf is a medium sized wolf, found in the coastal marshlands of southern parts of eastern
North America. By the 1970s the pure red wolf was thought to be extinct in the wild, but a
population has since been reintroduced in North Carolina that is said to now be up to 100 red wolf.
The red wolf was roamed across the south–eastern united states from Texas, to Florida, to New
York. The red wolf's historical habitat included areas of forest and coastal prairies where it would of
been one of the top predators. Today however, the world's red wolf population is confined to a
protected area in North Carolina. The red wolf is generally smaller in size than the grey wolf, found
in more northern parts of North America. Red wolves are named for their cinnamon coloured fur,
which is brownish–red with dark patches on their backs. Red wolves also have broad noses and
large looking ears for the size of their head.
In a similar way to other canines, and other wolf species, the red wolf is a very sociable animal,
living in pack with several of other red wolf's. Red wolf packs usually contain a dominant male and
female and their offspring and contain between 1 and 10 members. The red wolf is also a highly
territorial animal, with the red wolf pack guarding it's range from intrusion by other red wolf packs
in the area.
Although red wolves are known to hunt together as a group in order to catch a larger animal such as
a deer, red wolves primarily eat smaller ground dwelling animals

about this voyage that have been documented. In 1587, John White did make a temporary
establishment on or near Roanoke Island, and that after leaving for three years did return to the

On the other hand how long did the men awaiting Whites return stay on Roanoke Island? Old Frame
houses and a commanding building had been on the island from an earlier trip in 1585 and were
restored by the colonist along with an enclosure and a main entrance. This construction of the
palisade involved considerable labor and must have taken some time to build. So from this most
assume that the English men lived fairly conformably on the island, surviving the winter without
any serious loss. This can not be established but the solidity of the barrier they build suggests it.
These men expected White anytime after Easter and probably grew impatient, so there is no
assurance that they stayed on the island any time after June 1588. There are only two pieces of

It was about 10:30 Saturday morning when I woke up, still feeling bad from the night before. My
boyfriend decided at the last minute to surprise me and four of our children with a day at the beach
the day before. We left with only the clothes on our backs and bathing suits. It was only after we
arrived that we decided to stay the night. So we got us a room at the Sea Foam motel in Nags Head,
NC.
After I was finally able to get up from the bed, I woke the children up to get ready so we could
leave. We all took showers, packed up all our belongings and headed out. It was well past the

My boyfriend and I watched as the seagulls flew overhead and the children tossed them
breadcrumbs, ducking their heads every time one would swoop down over them. Just before we
reached the Island, I caught a glimpse of a pod of dolphins swimming along in the distance. Minutes

Klux Klan. The KKK was founded in 1866, and extended into almost every southern state by 1870.
The organization became a vehicle for white southern citizens to deny Republican Party's
Reconstruction–era policies whose ideas, that tried establishing political and economic equality for
African Americans. The KKK flourished in some regions in the South where, African Americans
were a minority of the population. The KKK also targeted any individual or organization that would

The strongest act that was passed was the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871. This act provided some
protection for the African Americans and made all KKK rituals and crimes a federal offense, as said

KKK still managed to harm many African Americans. The African American people learned how to
avoid the racism, and oppression. Within the First World War, much of the focus was taken off of
African Americans. The prejudice never fully stopped, but the culture became more prevalent. This
is most seen in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. The 1920s was a great time for many cultures,

In order to attract audiences, advertisers use various techniques on their advertisements to make
people aware of the firm's products, services or brands. Although the methods used by advertisers
are infinitely, they have a common goal to persuade those who may become their customers to buy
their products. An excellent advertisement will create a deep impression on its potential customers

The Disappearance Of The Lost Colony
In 1587, one hundred ten people, including seventeen women and nine children, sailed from
Plymouth, England, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to start a new life on the Outer Banks.
This colony of over one hundred people disappeared from the Roanoke Island region, never to be
seen again (Kramer 2). For over 400 years, historians and archeologists have attempted to determine
what happened. Although there are several popular theories regarding the disappearance of the Lost
Colony, the theory with the most evidence for being accurate is the migration theory. The two
previous expeditions that had been sent to this region by Sir Walter Raleigh had been unsuccessful
in establishing a settlement. The first group had simply returned to England. The second group had
left fifteen men to stay on the island to start a colony. The third group had expected to find these
men when they arrived, but the logs of Fort Raleigh had been pulled down. One corpse was found
and it became clear that the destiny of the others was not good, and none had survived ("The Lost
Colony of Roanoke" 2). Prior to their departure from England in1587, the third group of colonists
was misled about the area they were sent to. The previous expedition had compared Roanoke to the
Garden of Eden saying, "The earth bringeth forth all things in abundance, as in the first creation,

On January 11, 1861, the state of Alabama seceded from the Union. The secession movement was
characterized by a continuous development from the time of the Wilmot Proviso until the final
separation. As northern attacks on the institution of slavery began to mount, beginning with the
controversy over the admission of Missouri as a slave state in 1819–20, proslavery extremists in
Alabama and other Southern states increasingly referred to secession as their ultimate defense to
protect their region's society and economy.("Secession", 2011) The increasing success of the new
Republican Party in the North, with its adamant opposition to the expansion of slavery into the
western territories, seemed proof to more and more Alabamians of the northern intention to reduce
southerners to second–class citizenship in the Union. Essentially all Alabama voters, across the
entire political spectrum, believed that the territories were the common property of all Americans,
and therefore that all Americans should be able to go there and take their personal property,
including slaves, with them. The state's wealthy planters considered slavery essential to their

The American Civil War : The United States
The American Civil War, widely known in the United States as simply the Civil War as well as other
sectional names, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union or
independence for the Confederacy. Among the 34 states in January 1861, seven Southern slave
states individually declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate
States of America. The Confederacy, often simply called the South, grew to include eleven states,
and although they claimed thirteen states and additional western territories, the Confederacy was
never diplomatically recognized by a foreign country. The states that remained loyal and did not
declare secession were known as the Union or the North. The war had its origin in the fractious issue
of slavery, especially the extension of slavery into the western territories. After four years of combat,
which left over 600,000 Union and Confederate soldiers dead and destroyed much of the South 's
infrastructure, the Confederacy collapsed and slavery was abolished. Then began the Reconstruction
and the processes of restoring national unity and guaranteeing civil rights to the freed slaves.
