The First Failure Of The Settlement Of Roanoke Colony
It started in 1583. Sir Humphrey Gilbert organized the enterprise. He ended up drowning while
attempting to colonize St. John's, Newfoundland. Sir Walter Raleigh, his half–brother, was chosen to
take over. On March 25, 1584, Raleigh was granted a charter by Queen Elizabeth I to colonize in
North America. The first colony was established in 1584 on Roanoke Island, what is now Dare
County, North Carolina, but over the course of two years they went through some hardships. They
thought the native village of Aquascogoc stole a silver cup, and thus attacked the village. They
remained anyway, even with the lack of food, and some men went back to England to grab more
troops and supplies. In the meantime, from attacking the native village, the colonists were attacked,
but able to repel said attack. When Sir Francis Drake stopped by on the way back and volunteered to
take the colonists back to England, they agreed, leaving behind a couple men to protect Raleigh's
claim to Roanoke. Thus was the first failure of the settlement of Roanoke. ... Show more content on

He sent 115 colonists on the trip. The enterprise was led by John White, a close friend of Raleigh.
They made the trip and arrived on July 22, 1587. When they checked on the remaining settlers from
the first enterprise, they found nothing except the remains of one man. It was decided they would
establish the colony there instead. John White established relations with local Indian tribes,
including the Croatans. Not long after this, a colonist by the name of George Howe was killed by a
native when he went to search for crabs by himself in Albemarle

Slavery 1775 – 1830
"Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are
slaves, " said George Gordon Byron. Though slavery has never had a universal definition, one might
describe it as the dependent labour by one person performed to another who is not of his or her
family. It was thought to have come about after a dramatic labour shortage in particular areas or
countries. In America, slavery has always been a highly debated topic throughout the years. Often,
people associate slavery with words such as "brutal, cruel, inhumane, and horrible". Slaves were
forced to forget about freedom and about the liberties of life that Americans now take for granted.
During the years 1775 to 1830, African American slavery saw simultaneously the freedom of many
colored men and the enlargement of the institution of slavery. The free and enslaved African
Americans had different methods in approaching the challenges in front of them. The demand for a
labor force in the production of cotton encouraged the expansion of slavery; however, due to
increasing national identity, the republican value of equality and freedom denounced the systems of
slavery, allowing for a more widespread bondage; the free slaves in the North focused on tangible
reasons for freedom, while the enslaved African Americans in the South focused gaining freedom
through practical means. The ending of the

Alexander Hamilton's Financial Plan
Still, Hamilton's funding plan went forward. To pay it all, the United States would reissue bonds that
would be paid in full over 15 to 20 years. In other words, the country would issue new debt at a
lower rate in order to retire the old ("Hamilton's Plan to Fix the U.S. Economy", Mintz and McNeil
"The Federalist Era: Alexander Hamilton's Financial Program"). But a centralized government isn't
cheap to run and the U.S. would need some new cash flows quickly in order to keep up with its debt
obligations as well as its new federal functions. Why Whiskey? Hamilton's next step was to figure
out a way to fund the new national government as well as simultaneously service the new debt.
Other measures were already in place that proved insufficient ... Show more content on

The heaviest tax was on imported spirits like wine and brandy, but these were primarily consumed
by elites in the city who could afford it. The middle level of the tax was on domestically
manufactured products made from imported goods (for example, rum made from imported
molasses), but these products were mostly sold on the east coast and the tax was passed on to the
consumer. The tax on distilled spirits was actually the lowest of the three–level tax, but unlike in the
east where the tax could be passed to the consumer, westerners couldn't afford that. Even if they
whiskey was their currency (Smith, Andrew 67). Easterners also drank primarily wine, cider, and
beer while the westerners drank spirits (Axelrod 48). Collectors were particularly lenient on wealthy
eastern merchants whether it be on import duties or excise taxes (Bouton 230). Hamilton wouldn't
dare crack down on them because he was being careful to maintain the goodwill of the wealthy and
powerful. He did not, however, need to be in the good favor of the small farmers. Though it was a
federal tax, the Whiskey Tax was regional in its scope. It encouraged regional divisions, class
distinctions, and soon stirred complaints about excessive centralized

November 21, 1789. North Carolina has a population of 9.944 million.
North Carolina has been around for quite some time. They have had seventy five governors, and
their current governor is Roy Cooper. He has been governor since January 2017. Up till 1663 North
Carolina was actually called SouthVirginia. South virginia was the twelfth state. The Roanoke
colony is today's North Carolina's Dare county.
The Roanoke colony was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. The colony disappeared as the Anglo
Spanish War was going on in 1590, three years after the last shipment of supplies from England to
Roanoke. When Roanoke disappeared this gave it the nickname "The Lost Colony." There has been
no exact evidence as to what happened to the colonists who disappeared. The only hint to what
happened was a carving on a tree trunk that said "Croatoan". Croatoan was small group of native
americans that lived by Roanoke. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The smell of the salt water hangs in the air on a crisp autumn day in the year 1585, as the sounds of
waves crashing against the ships on the coast can be heard off in the distant. Sir Walter Raleigh 's
explorers Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe steps foot on the sand of the beach of what is now
common day Virginia, and breaths in the air of what is the New World. Roanoke was an island off
the coast of, what today is called, Dare County, North Carolina. The island was established by
Queen Elizabeth 1 in 1585. On July 4th of 1584, Amadas and Barlowe stepped foot on the grounds
of what would be called Roanoke Island. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During his time there, Grenville helped build relations with the people there, as well, build a fort
there. However, the other 4 ships would never arrive, and going tired of waiting on them, Grenville
decided to leave and sail onward. After sailing onward, Grenville 's ship reached the outer coast of
the Carolina 's. It was there that he would met up with the other 4 ships, and together, would all
explore this new area. They built a village, and after some time, Grenville decided to return to
England for more food and supplies, but he left behind a few people to maintain the village that
were built. He promised to return shortly with more food and supplies, however, after several years,
with no sign of Grenville, the villagers were ready to leave the New World. It was during this time
that Sir Francis Drake stopped by the village on his return trip from a successful raid in the
Caribbean, he offered to take the villagers back to England with him. All accepted and soon they all
left for England, with tobacco, maize, and potatoes that the villagers brought with them from the
Native Americans that they encountered there. However, Grenville would return, but only to find
that the colony was abandoned. After seeing this, Grenville decided to return to England with most
of his crew, only leaving behind a few people to maintain the village and to keep an English
presence on Sir Walter Raleigh 's claim to Roanoke

this paper about. One of the programs is the local Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County and the
D.A.R.E. Program of Henderson County. I decided to write about local programs because it would
give me the opportunity to learn more about juvenile delinquency prevention programs within my
own community. Both programs are a huge staple within Henderson County and are two of the most
important juvenile delinquency prevention programs within Henderson County.
First I will report about the local Boys and Girls Club within Henderson County. On November 1st

The second program I am going to talk about is the Henderson County D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse
Resistance Education) program. The D.A.R.E. program started in 1983 in Los Angeles, California as
a partnership between parents, schools and law enforcement to educate children on the
consequences of drug abuse and teaching good decision making skills to enable them to live
productive drug and violence–free lives (2). The Henderson County branch started in 1985 in
several schools in Henderson County as a pilot program for North Carolina and was implemented in
1987 in all the elementary schools locally (2). DARE has continued in the classroom since that time
with well–trained, dedicated officers making a difference in children's lives. The DARE Curriculum
is focused at the 5th grade level, but has lessons available for all grades. There is also a D.A.R.E.
camp in Henderson County, which is a summer program that children can attend that goes into even
more detail than just the course they are required to take in school. It is an amazing opportunity for
the children as well as their mentors. DARE Camp has grown from a day camp with 35 campers to
an overnight camp with approximately 220 campers each year (2). Activities include: archery,
swimming, first aide, zip line, "the blob", fishing, canoeing, crafts, team challenges, singing,

The Legacy of Perceptions of Interracial Relationships as Demonstrated in Late 19th and Early 20th
Century Black Literature and Events
The history of interracial relationships in America is a painfully loaded issue which is still evolving
in the consciousness of the 20th century. Because the first instances of sexual integration occurred
under the institution of slavery, our understanding of them is necessarily beset with dominance,
violence, and rape. Interracial relationships and the children they produced became another
manifestation of power relationships between whites and blacks in our contorted social atmosphere.
Even to the present day, interracial relationships are often looked upon as being propelled by impure
motives and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dr. Gresham wants her to marry him but he wants her race to be kept from his family. Iola realizes
that by agreeing to his proposal, her life and existence would be a facade, and that by concealing her
race, she would be concealing implicit aspects of herself. Iola decides that she is unwilling to reject
her race. Thus, she has to repress her feelings toward Dr. Gresham and of a life of "happiness," as
she puts it, no matter how much joy she would have felt or how much she actually sought his
"manly love," for there was too much at stake for her.
W.E.B. DuBois' The Souls of Black Folk
In Chapter XI in The Souls of Black Folk, "Of the Passing of the First Born," Dr. DuBois discusses
the death and "escape" of his son. He struggles emotionally when he notices the white
characteristics of his child. As he perceives the white blood that is flowing through his black child's
vein, DuBois writes: "...(I) felt a vague unrest. Why was his hair tinted gold? An evil omen was
golden hair in my life. Why had not the brown of his eyes crushed out and killed the blue? ...And
thus in the Land of the Color–line I saw, as it fell across my baby, the shadow of the Veil" (p 160,
Bedford ed.). Du Bois's reaction to the racial duality of his child and the "awful gladness" he feels
when his son dies is indicative of the way in which race and the metaphorical "veil" pervade every
aspect of life. DuBois sees the veil as a result of double

Fredrick Wilson: Waheenee-Wia, Buffalo Bird Woman
Fredrick Wilson Nearly a century after Catlin and Bodmer painted the people of the Northern Plains,
Fredrick Wilson accompanied his brother Gilbert to Fort Berthold Indian Reservation illustrate the
life of Waheenee–wia, Buffalo Bird Woman. By the time of Wilson's visit, the Mandan and Hidatsa
lived on reservations in Anglo style homes and conformed to American social norms. Wilson saw
the last of the traditionally constructed earth lodges, as documented in his brother's anthropological
survey, and Wilson used Waheenee's stories, and sketches by her son Edward Goodbird along with
the art of 19th century artists like Catlin and Bodmer to present his own depiction of tribal life.
Unlike Catlin and Bodmer's interactions with Mato–Tope, Waheenee offered Wilson a feminine lens
into Hidatsa life. Waheenee was born in an earth lodge two years after the 1837 smallpox epidemic
and grew up in a traditional family at Like–A–Fish–Hook Village, the combined Mandan and
Hidatsa village formed to preserve their combined tribal identities. She was seventy when Fredrick
and Gilbert Wilson recorded her memories, and she described her childhood in detail. Although

mean what we think of the word today. During the 19th century was the time of slavery. When we
think of slavery we usually think of whites being the free ones and blacks being under slavery with
the whites owning them. Not every black person was under slavery, some were able to be free from
slavery but they were still being discriminized by whites. Life was tough for a enslaved black

If you compared the revolts in the United states to Brazil or the West Indies it would be smaller and
less frequent. Slaves would be begin to resist by either the "day–to–day resistance" or even "silent
sabotage" which was pretty much doing poor work, breaking tools, abusing animals, and even
disrupting the plantation routine. During the war of Independence and War of 1812, thousands of
slaves were able to gain freedom by running away to British lines though these slaves did face
formidable obstacles along their way. A huge slave revolt that impacted the colonies was the Nat
Turner Rebellion. A slave preacher and religious mystic in Southampton County, Virginia, Nat
Turner believed that God had chosen him to lead a black uprising. Evidence from the Confessions of
Nat Turner in Voices of Freedom show that Turner believes that God had chosen him when Turner
states, " I was struck with that particular passage which which says: 'Seek ye the kingdom of Heaven
and all things shall be added unto you.' I reflected much on this passaged, and prayed daily for light
on this subject. As I was praying one day at my plough the spirit spoke to me, saying 'Seek ye the

Turner and followers marching down from farm to farm attacking white people. Most of the victims

The Asiento System: Mid-18th Century
The Asiento System was a system the Spanish created in Mexico and Peru between the early 16th
and the mid–18th century. In the system, enslaved West African people were brought into the New
World to be used as slave labor to replace the Indians in the encomienda system that died from
diseases and being overworked by the Spanish. However, Spaniards who wanted to import slaves
were heavily taxed by their king. Even so, these Spaniards continued to participate in the slave trade
because they wanted to acquire some of the gold and silver that was being produced by the slave
trade. The Asiento System was a forerunner to the Triangular Trade System and resulted in
thousands of slaves being brought into the New World. Adena–Hopewell is a prehistoric Native

the introduction of derivative securities affects the underlying market. A wide array of theoretical

Turning to the introduction of option contracts, the non–linear payoff structure of options adds an
interesting dimension to the problem, that has inspired much insightful theoretical research. Still, no
real consensus has emerged as to whether we should expect options to stabilize or destabilize the
underlying market. As in the case for the introduction of futures, the range of theoretical possibilities
is sufficiently broad as to accommodate nearly any conclusion, depending on what assumptions are
made. Nevertheless, it can be quite instructive to examine this literature carefully, for in doing so we
may gain valuable insights to help us gain a richer appreciation of the complicated relationships
between derivative and primary assets. The empirical literature on this issue is vast. Studies have

The Fluidity of the American Civil War
The American Civil War, widely known in the United States as simply the Civil War as well as other
sectional names, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union or
independence for the Confederacy. Among the 34 states in January 1861, seven Southern slave
states individually declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate
States of America. The Confederacy, often simply called the South, grew to include eleven states,
and although they claimed thirteen states and additional western territories, the Confederacy was
never diplomatically recognized by a foreign country. The states that remained loyal and did not
declare secession were known as the Union or the North. The war had ... Show more content on

Slavery was the central source of escalating political tension in the 1850s. The Republican Party was
determined to prevent any spread of slavery, and many Southern leaders had threatened secession if
the Republican candidate, Lincoln, won the 1860 election. After Lincoln had won without carrying a
single Southern state, many Southern whites felt that disunion had become their only option,
because they thought that they were losing representation, which would hamper their ability to
promote pro–slavery acts and policies.
Root causes
Slavery. Contemporary actors, the Union and Confederate leadership and fighting soldiers on both
sides believed that slavery caused the Civil War. Union men mainly believed the war was to
emancipate the slaves. Confederates fought to protect southern society, and slavery as an integral
part of it. From the anti–slavery perspective, the issue was primarily about whether the system of
slavery was an anachronistic evil that was incompatible with Republicanism in the United States.
The strategy of the anti–slavery forces was containment – to stop the expansion and thus put slavery
on a path to gradual extinction. The slave–holding interests in the South denounced this strategy as
infringing upon their Constitutional rights. Southern whites believed that the emancipation of slaves
would destroy the South's economy because of the alleged laziness of blacks under free labor.
Slavery was illegal in the

Unsolved Mysteries : The Lost Colony
Unsolved Mysteries – The Lost Colony
During the 1500's, the English started their first attempts at colonizing in the New World. One of the
first colonies to settle in North America was named after the island on which they settled. That
island was named the Roanoke Island. After a while of living on the island the colony had to return
to England, since there had been a shortage of food and they had been attacked by nearby indians
multiple times. A second group of English settlers also tried to settle on the island, but got there too
late. They were not able to farm nor did they have enough supplies for everyone. The colony failed
to accomplish their settlement on the island and quickly went back to England. Afterwards , a third
group of colonists decided to settle in the New World. When they went low on supplies, the leader
of the group decided to return to England, but when he tried to return, he was delayed. He returned
three years later to find that the colony had vanished mysteriously with no trace. Many historians
and anthropologists indicate different theoretical possibilities such as; the colony simply left the
settlement and somehow split up, decided to live with the neighbored, Croatoan indians, or were
brutally attacked by the natives. Wherever the Roanoke Colony ended up we may never know and to
this day it remains a popular, unsolvable mystery.

Cherokee Nation
Before invasion of the Americans onto Cherokee territory, the Cherokee lived in peace and harmony.
Keetoowah is the name of the ancient Cherokee town in the eastern homelands, said to be the
"Mother Town" of the people (Conley 18). Many of the Cherokee Indians originated here according
to the traditions. They referred themselves as Ani–Kituwagi, meaning Keetoowah People, or Ani–
yunwi–ya, the Real People (Conley 27). The fertile lands of the Keetoowah were filled of many
resources, but as the population grew too large for the town, many people had moved out and built
new towns. Overtime, many towns were built one after another. Soon, there were approximately 200
scattered tribes over vast areas that consisted of a number of ... Show more content on

It jeopardized the Cherokee's clan traditional ways of a matrilineal family structure carried on for
many centuries. Nevertheless, the Cherokees could do nothing about it.
Before the first known contacts, life of the Cherokee nation had grown and thrived for many years in
the southeastern United States in the lower Appalachian Mountains in states such as: Georgia,
Tennessee, North and South Carolina, and parts of Kentucky and Alabama. However, the first
recorded contact with outsiders was Hernado De Soto in his expedition of 1540, in search of gold
throughout the Cherokee county (Martin). Mr. Soto found no trace of gold and returned empty
handed. The Spanish explorers noticed the Cherokee village they encountered was practically
deserted. Many of the tribes would flee from the sight of the unknown. About 100 years later,
Abraham Wood, a Virginian, sent two men, James Needham and Gabriel Arthur in 1673 to establish
trade (Martin). One of the traders begun to establish his home among the Cherokee Indians, which
didn't last for long before he was killed. Even though many explorers tried to establish trades, life of
the traditional Cherokee remained unchanged as late as 1710, which is marked as the beginning of
Cherokee trade with the whites (Trail of Tears). The white mans influential politics came slowly

Lost Colony Roanoke
The lost colony of Roanoke is a very occult matter such as what happened to the people who were
doing just fine until one day when all of a sudden, they disappeared. Roanoke was a first ditch
attempt to set up a colony on the east coast of North America. They had traveled to America before
to see if they could settle the land. This area was scanned by a colonizing expedition ordered by Sir
Walter Raleigh so he sent Sir Richard Greenville and Sir Ralph Lane and they built the Citie of
Raleigh in 1585 before heading back to England the next year. Its current location today is an island
in Dare County in present day North Carolina, surrounded by the Atlantic coast. The next year in
1587, an English colony was settled by a group of 117 men, women, ... Show more content on

A climatologist had researched bald cypress trees in swamps near Blackway and Notoway River to
show what the conditions were like back in that time. They looked at tree rings to analyze the
conditions as a tree's rings will describe how the weather was like. If the conditions were bad and
there was no water, the rings would be close together but if the rings were far apart and wide,
conditions were good and prosperous. Compared to Jamestown, which was also in its worst
conditions due to a drought that nearly cause the colony to fail in 1607, Roanoke was in the worst
drought it had ever been in for the past 800 years. Both these natural disasters could have both came
into play as the drought could've have diminished all supplies and the hurricanes brought in heavy,
strong winds to destroy the colony. Scientists had concluded that these were some of the worst
possible times to set up a colony in this

Essay about The Roanoke Colony
The Roanoke colony was located on the Roanoke Island, in Dare County. This is where North
Carolina is located today. In 1584, explorers Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe were the first
Europeans to set view the island. They were sent to that particular region by Sir Walter Raleigh with
the assignment of exploring the extensive sounds and estuaries in hunt of an ideal location for
settlement. Barlowe wrote bright information of Roanoke Island, and when the explorers returned to
England a year afterward with two Natives, Manteo and Wanchese, all of London was abuzz with
chat of the New World's wonders.Queen Elizabeth, impressed with the results of the reconnaissance
voyage, knighted Raleigh as a reward. The new ground was named "Virginia" in ... Show more

On April 27, 1584, Raleigh dispatched a journey led by Phillip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to
search for the Eastern coast of North America. They arrived on Roanoke Island on July 4, and
almost immediately recognized relations with the local citizens, the Sectoans and Croatans. Barlowe
returned to England with two Croatans named Manteo and Wanchese, who were able to explain the
government and natural features of the region to Raleigh. Based on this knowledge, Raleigh
prepared a second journey, to be led by Sir Richard Grenville.
Greenville's convoy departed Plymouth on April 9, 1585, with five major ships: the Tiger
(Grenville's), the Roebuck, the Red Lion, the Elizabeth, and the Dorothy. Consequently, a harsh
rainstorm off the shore of Portugal divided the Tiger from the rest of the convoy. The captains had
an unforeseen event plan if they were divided, which was to get together up again in Puerto Rico,
and the Tiger reached in the "Baye of Muskito" (Guayanilla Bay) on May 11.
While anticipating for the additional ships, Grenville recognized relations with the Spanish there
while concurrently engaging in some privateering in opposition to them, and also built a fort. The
Elizabeth arrived almost immediately after the fort's creation. Eventually, Grenville worn–out off
anticipating or the remaining ships, and departed on June 7. The fort was discarded, and its site
remains unknown.

Characteristics Of The Red Wolf
The red wolf is a medium sized wolf, found in the coastal marshlands of southern parts of eastern
North America. By the 1970s the pure red wolf was thought to be extinct in the wild, but a
population has since been reintroduced in North Carolina that is said to now be up to 100 red wolf.
The red wolf was roamed across the south–eastern united states from Texas, to Florida, to New
York. The red wolf's historical habitat included areas of forest and coastal prairies where it would of
been one of the top predators. Today however, the world's red wolf population is confined to a
protected area in North Carolina. The red wolf is generally smaller in size than the grey wolf, found
in more northern parts of North America. Red wolves are named for their cinnamon coloured fur,
which is brownish–red with dark patches on their backs. Red wolves also have broad noses and
large looking ears for the size of their head.
In a similar way to other canines, and other wolf species, the red wolf is a very sociable animal,
living in pack with several of other red wolf's. Red wolf packs usually contain a dominant male and
female and their offspring and contain between 1 and 10 members. The red wolf is also a highly
territorial animal, with the red wolf pack guarding it's range from intrusion by other red wolf packs
in the area.
Although red wolves are known to hunt together as a group in order to catch a larger animal such as
a deer, red wolves primarily eat smaller ground dwelling animals

The Unemployment Problem In North Carolina

due to a recession, jobs moving overseas, a lack of available local options, or the personal attributes
of the potential employee, unemployment continues to plague many American cities, communities,
and citizens. Unemployment is such a big problem that it affects a large number of American
citizens on a continuous basis. This problem is especially prevalent in Caldwell County, North

often. Caldwell County is one of those areas hit hard by economic recession, therefore Caldwell has
a towering drug problem. In Derek Lacey's article "Abuse of Prescription Drugs in Caldwell County
Targeted." he talks about how many states and counties are working to rid this problem through
Project Lazarus, which a police project that helps teach the community about the effects of drug
abuse. Lacey also talks about how the Lenoir Police office installed a drop box for prescription
drugs no longer used to help keep people from abusing the drugs. Lacey states in his article that "In
just the first three months, people left 66 pounds of prescription drugs." and "... amount of drugs
collected exceeded the department's expectations." Prescription drug abuse is a major problem that
affects the Caldwell County area. "In 2011, Caldwell County had a rate of 13.4 deaths for every
100,000 people... " (Lacey). This is a very important statistic that shows how big of a problem that
Caldwell is facing with drugs. Many people who cannot get hired may be because those people
cannot pass a drug test that most companies require to have in order to get hired. And if people who
are on drugs somehow happened to get hired the person would struggle to operate on full capacity
due to the drug problem. If the citizen who has a drug problem cannot keep a job, the person may

The Roanoke was established in 1585 on Roanoke island which is now Dare County , North
Carolina. A group of 115 English settlers arrived on the island in 1587. Later that year John White
the governor of the new colony decided he will sail back to England to gather a fresh load of
supplies. When he arrived, a major naval war broke loose between Spain and England. In August
1590 , White finally returned to Roanoke, where he had left his family.Virginia Dare , his infant

Another group of archaeologists working about 50 miles west of Roanoke Island at the head of
Albemarle Sound say that they have pottery and metal artifacts likely associated with the Lost
Colony. The digs by the First Colony Foundation were sparked by the 2012 discovery of a patch
concealing the image of a fort on a map painted by John White. But like the finds at Hatteras, the
objects might be associated with the second wave of English settlement.Last fall, a dig by the
National Park Service at Fort Raleigh on Roanoke Island thought to be the site of the original
settlement yielded no trace of the colonists. Earlier in 2016, archaeologists found a handful of
fragments of an apothecary jar that almost certainly date from the 16th century. The gold Kendall

Lost City of Roanoke
The story of Jamestown was one of America's first documented mysteries. There are clear facts
about this voyage that have been documented. In 1587, John White did make a temporary
establishment on or near Roanoke Island, and that after leaving for three years did return to the
island in 1590. On his return, all traces of the colonist having lived there for those three years had
vanished. No Jamestown colonist is known to be seen from again. So what happened to them during
those three years? Jamestown, which was led by Governor John White, landed on Roanoke Island
between April and late July 1587 and was a royal grantee of Sir Walter Raleigh. Jamestown was a

On the other hand how long did the men awaiting Whites return stay on Roanoke Island? Old Frame
houses and a commanding building had been on the island from an earlier trip in 1585 and were
restored by the colonist along with an enclosure and a main entrance. This construction of the
palisade involved considerable labor and must have taken some time to build. So from this most
assume that the English men lived fairly conformably on the island, surviving the winter without
any serious loss. This can not be established but the solidity of the barrier they build suggests it.
These men expected White anytime after Easter and probably grew impatient, so there is no
assurance that they stayed on the island any time after June 1588. There are only two pieces of
evidence throughout the Outer Banks between 1587–1590 of the Jamestown colonist. The first was
the landing of an Irish captain, William, most likely in August of 1587. Sir George Carey, a probable
backer of White's expedition, governor of Isle of Wright, had sent the privateer, "Swallowe", out of
its way to check on the colonist. It was on its way back to Ireland when it stopped to look for the
Roanoke settlers. The Irish reported finding a stray mule and stray cattle, but no people. The Irish
did try to establish contact with the colonist, but at what specific point along the Outer Banks is in
question. The other piece of

It was about 10:30 Saturday morning when I woke up, still feeling bad from the night before. My

After I was finally able to get up from the bed, I woke the children up to get ready so we could

later we were able to spot the Island, so we all headed back to our vehicles as we approached
Ocaracoke. Once we reached the dock, we waited in the van until it was our turn to exit.
Once we had departed the ferry, we continued south on Highway 12. We passed several restaurants
and gift shops on our way. There were people walking and riding bikes along the sides of the road as
we drove past. It was not very long before we had reached the southern tip of the Island, so we
turned around on Highway 12 and started heading back north towards the ferry. Along the way we
decided to stop by one of the gift shops called "The Pirates Chest." We all went inside to look
around. The shop was filled with little knick knacks, toys, shells, etc. We let each of the children
pick them out something, paid the cashier and we were on our way again.
Before we reached the ferry, we made one more stop by "The Dipping Dots" for some ice cream.
The shop had all sorts of goodies, including cakes, brownies, fudge and candy. The children walked

The Civil War And Reconstruction
The largest threat to African Americans with after the Civil War and Reconstruction was the Ku

The organization became a vehicle for white southern citizens to deny Republican Party's
Reconstruction–era policies whose ideas, that tried establishing political and economic equality for
African Americans. The KKK flourished in some regions in the South where, African Americans
were a minority of the population. The KKK also targeted any individual or organization that would

The strongest act that was passed was the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871. This act provided some
protection for the African Americans and made all KKK rituals and crimes a federal offense, as said
in history.com's Klu Klux Klan article,
"The Ku Klux Klan Act designated certain crimes committed by individuals as federal offenses,
including conspiracies to deprive citizens of the right to hold office, serve on juries and enjoy the
equal protection of the law."
This law did help combat the oppression in the South, but the oppression never fully ended. From
the early 1870s onward, white supremacy gradually died down. However, there still were many
oppression supporters by the end of 1876, even though, the entire south was under Democratic
control once again. Despite all the positive changes in the South, oppression still existed and the
KKK still managed to harm many African Americans. The African American people learned how to
avoid the racism, and oppression. Within the First World War, much of the focus was taken off of
African Americans. The prejudice never fully stopped, but the culture became more prevalent. This
is most seen in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. The 1920s was a great time for many cultures,

In order to attract audiences, advertisers use various techniques on their advertisements to make
people aware of the firm's products, services or brands. Although the methods used by advertisers
are infinitely, they have a common goal to persuade those who may become their customers to buy
their products. An excellent advertisement will create a deep impression on its potential customers
through particular techniques. The effect that advertising has had on consumers is of consequence to
everyone due to the nature of capitalism. "Defined a consumer is someone that acquires goods or
services for direct use or ownership. Advertising is the activity of attracting public attention to a

The Disappearance Of The Lost Colony
In 1587, one hundred ten people, including seventeen women and nine children, sailed from
Plymouth, England, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to start a new life on the Outer Banks.
This colony of over one hundred people disappeared from the Roanoke Island region, never to be
seen again (Kramer 2). For over 400 years, historians and archeologists have attempted to determine
what happened. Although there are several popular theories regarding the disappearance of the Lost
Colony, the theory with the most evidence for being accurate is the migration theory. The two
previous expeditions that had been sent to this region by Sir Walter Raleigh had been unsuccessful
in establishing a settlement. The first group had simply returned to England. The second group had
left fifteen men to stay on the island to start a colony. The third group had expected to find these
men when they arrived, but the logs of Fort Raleigh had been pulled down. One corpse was found
and it became clear that the destiny of the others was not good, and none had survived ("The Lost
Colony of Roanoke" 2). Prior to their departure from England in1587, the third group of colonists
was misled about the area they were sent to. The previous expedition had compared Roanoke to the
Garden of Eden saying, "The earth bringeth forth all things in abundance, as in the first creation,
without toil or labor. The soil is the most plentiful, sweet, fruitful and wholesome of all the world."

The Secession Movement Of The United States Essay
On January 11, 1861, the state of Alabama seceded from the Union. The secession movement was
characterized by a continuous development from the time of the Wilmot Proviso until the final
separation. As northern attacks on the institution of slavery began to mount, beginning with the
controversy over the admission of Missouri as a slave state in 1819–20, proslavery extremists in
Alabama and other Southern states increasingly referred to secession as their ultimate defense to
protect their region's society and economy.("Secession", 2011) The increasing success of the new
Republican Party in the North, with its adamant opposition to the expansion of slavery into the
western territories, seemed proof to more and more Alabamians of the northern intention to reduce
southerners to second–class citizenship in the Union. Essentially all Alabama voters, across the
entire political spectrum, believed that the territories were the common property of all Americans,
and therefore that all Americans should be able to go there and take their personal property,
including slaves, with them. The state's wealthy planters considered slavery essential to their
economy. The Republican nominee, Abraham Lincoln, whose party did not exist in Alabama or most
of the South and who consequently was not a candidate there, carried every free state, thus finally
providing southerners with unarguable proof that the North was determined to deny their
constitutional right to settle in the territories with

The American Civil War : The United States
The war had its origin in the fractious issue
of slavery, especially the extension of slavery into the western territories. After four years of combat,
which left over 600,000 Union and Confederate soldiers dead and destroyed much of the South 's
infrastructure, the Confederacy collapsed and slavery was abolished. Then began the Reconstruction
and the processes of restoring national unity and guaranteeing civil rights to the freed slaves.
In the 1860 presidential election, Republicans, led by Abraham Lincoln, opposed the expansion of
slavery into U.S. territories. The Republican Party, dominant in the North, secured a majority of the
electoral votes, and Lincoln was elected the first Republican president, but before his inauguration

The First Failure Of The Settlement Of Roanoke Colony

  • 1. The First Failure Of The Settlement Of Roanoke Colony It started in 1583. Sir Humphrey Gilbert organized the enterprise. He ended up drowning while attempting to colonize St. John's, Newfoundland. Sir Walter Raleigh, his half–brother, was chosen to take over. On March 25, 1584, Raleigh was granted a charter by Queen Elizabeth I to colonize in North America. The first colony was established in 1584 on Roanoke Island, what is now Dare County, North Carolina, but over the course of two years they went through some hardships. They thought the native village of Aquascogoc stole a silver cup, and thus attacked the village. They remained anyway, even with the lack of food, and some men went back to England to grab more troops and supplies. In the meantime, from attacking the native village, the colonists were attacked, but able to repel said attack. When Sir Francis Drake stopped by on the way back and volunteered to take the colonists back to England, they agreed, leaving behind a couple men to protect Raleigh's claim to Roanoke. Thus was the first failure of the settlement of Roanoke. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He sent 115 colonists on the trip. The enterprise was led by John White, a close friend of Raleigh. They made the trip and arrived on July 22, 1587. When they checked on the remaining settlers from the first enterprise, they found nothing except the remains of one man. It was decided they would establish the colony there instead. John White established relations with local Indian tribes, including the Croatans. Not long after this, a colonist by the name of George Howe was killed by a native when he went to search for crabs by himself in Albemarle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Slavery : The African American Slavery Amira Farid December 2, 2014 APUSH – Steiker Period 6 Slavery 1775 – 1830 "Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves, " said George Gordon Byron. Though slavery has never had a universal definition, one might describe it as the dependent labour by one person performed to another who is not of his or her family. It was thought to have come about after a dramatic labour shortage in particular areas or countries. In America, slavery has always been a highly debated topic throughout the years. Often, people associate slavery with words such as "brutal, cruel, inhumane, and horrible". Slaves were forced to forget about freedom and about the liberties of life that Americans now take for granted. During the years 1775 to 1830, African American slavery saw simultaneously the freedom of many colored men and the enlargement of the institution of slavery. The free and enslaved African Americans had different methods in approaching the challenges in front of them. The demand for a labor force in the production of cotton encouraged the expansion of slavery; however, due to increasing national identity, the republican value of equality and freedom denounced the systems of slavery, allowing for a more widespread bondage; the free slaves in the North focused on tangible reasons for freedom, while the enslaved African Americans in the South focused gaining freedom through practical means. • 5. Alexander Hamilton's Financial Plan Still, Hamilton's funding plan went forward. To pay it all, the United States would reissue bonds that would be paid in full over 15 to 20 years. In other words, the country would issue new debt at a lower rate in order to retire the old ("Hamilton's Plan to Fix the U.S. Economy", Mintz and McNeil "The Federalist Era: Alexander Hamilton's Financial Program"). But a centralized government isn't cheap to run and the U.S. would need some new cash flows quickly in order to keep up with its debt obligations as well as its new federal functions. Why Whiskey? Hamilton's next step was to figure out a way to fund the new national government as well as simultaneously service the new debt. Other measures were already in place that proved insufficient ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The heaviest tax was on imported spirits like wine and brandy, but these were primarily consumed by elites in the city who could afford it. The middle level of the tax was on domestically manufactured products made from imported goods (for example, rum made from imported molasses), but these products were mostly sold on the east coast and the tax was passed on to the consumer. The tax on distilled spirits was actually the lowest of the three–level tax, but unlike in the east where the tax could be passed to the consumer, westerners couldn't afford that. Even if they whiskey was their currency (Smith, Andrew 67). Easterners also drank primarily wine, cider, and beer while the westerners drank spirits (Axelrod 48). Collectors were particularly lenient on wealthy eastern merchants whether it be on import duties or excise taxes (Bouton 230). Hamilton wouldn't dare crack down on them because he was being careful to maintain the goodwill of the wealthy and powerful. He did not, however, need to be in the good favor of the small farmers. Though it was a federal tax, the Whiskey Tax was regional in its scope. It encouraged regional divisions, class distinctions, and soon stirred complaints about excessive centralized ... The Lost Colony The Lost Colony Darian Taylor History 101 Roanoke Darian Taylor December 2, 2014 The smell of the salt water hangs in the air on a crisp autumn day in the year 1585, as the sounds of waves crashing against the ships on the coast can be heard off in the distant. Sir Walter Raleigh 's explorers Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe steps foot on the sand of the beach of what is now common day Virginia, and breaths in the air of what is the New World. Roanoke was an island off the coast of, what today is called, Dare County, North Carolina. The island was established by Queen Elizabeth 1 in 1585. During his time there, Grenville helped build relations with the people there, as well, build a fort there. However, the other 4 ships would never arrive, and going tired of waiting on them, Grenville decided to leave and sail onward. After sailing onward, Grenville 's ship reached the outer coast of the Carolina 's. It was there that he would met up with the other 4 ships, and together, would all explore this new area. They built a village, and after some time, Grenville decided to return to England for more food and supplies, but he left behind a few people to maintain the village that were built. He promised to return shortly with more food and supplies, however, after several years, with no sign of Grenville, the villagers were ready to leave the New World. It was during this time that Sir Francis Drake stopped by the village on his return trip from a successful raid in the Caribbean, he offered to take the villagers back to England with him. All accepted and soon they all left for England, with tobacco, maize, and potatoes that the villagers brought with them from the Native Americans that they encountered there. However, Grenville would return, but only to find that the colony was abandoned. One of the programs is the local Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County and the D.A.R.E. Program of Henderson County. I decided to write about local programs because it would give me the opportunity to learn more about juvenile delinquency prevention programs within my own community. Both programs are a huge staple within Henderson County and are two of the most important juvenile delinquency prevention programs within Henderson County. The D.A.R.E. program started in 1983 in Los Angeles, California as a partnership between parents, schools and law enforcement to educate children on the consequences of drug abuse and teaching good decision making skills to enable them to live productive drug and violence–free lives (2). The Henderson County branch started in 1985 in several schools in Henderson County as a pilot program for North Carolina and was implemented in 1987 in all the elementary schools locally (2). DARE has continued in the classroom since that time with well–trained, dedicated officers making a difference in children's lives. The DARE Curriculum is focused at the 5th grade level, but has lessons available for all grades. There is also a D.A.R.E. camp in Henderson County, which is a summer program that children can attend that goes into even more detail than just the course they are required to take in school. It is an amazing opportunity for the children as well as their mentors. DARE Camp has grown from a day camp with 35 campers to an overnight camp with approximately 220 campers each year (2). The Legacy of Perceptions of Interracial Relationships as Demonstrated in Late 19th and Early 20th Century Black Literature and Events The history of interracial relationships in America is a painfully loaded issue which is still evolving in the consciousness of the 20th century. Because the first instances of sexual integration occurred under the institution of slavery, our understanding of them is necessarily beset with dominance, violence, and rape. Interracial relationships and the children they produced became another manifestation of power relationships between whites and blacks in our contorted social atmosphere. Even to the present day, interracial relationships are often looked upon as being propelled by impure motives and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dr. Gresham wants her to marry him but he wants her race to be kept from his family. Iola realizes that by agreeing to his proposal, her life and existence would be a facade, and that by concealing her race, she would be concealing implicit aspects of herself. Iola decides that she is unwilling to reject her race. Thus, she has to repress her feelings toward Dr. Gresham and of a life of "happiness," as she puts it, no matter how much joy she would have felt or how much she actually sought his "manly love," for there was too much at stake for her. W.E.B. DuBois' The Souls of Black Folk In Chapter XI in The Souls of Black Folk, "Of the Passing of the First Born," Dr. DuBois discusses the death and "escape" of his son. He struggles emotionally when he notices the white characteristics of his child. As he perceives the white blood that is flowing through his black child's vein, DuBois writes: "...(I) felt a vague unrest. Why was his hair tinted gold? An evil omen was golden hair in my life. Why had not the brown of his eyes crushed out and killed the blue? ...And thus in the Land of the Color–line I saw, as it fell across my baby, the shadow of the Veil" (p 160, Bedford ed.). By the time of Wilson's visit, the Mandan and Hidatsa lived on reservations in Anglo style homes and conformed to American social norms. Wilson saw the last of the traditionally constructed earth lodges, as documented in his brother's anthropological survey, and Wilson used Waheenee's stories, and sketches by her son Edward Goodbird along with the art of 19th century artists like Catlin and Bodmer to present his own depiction of tribal life. Unlike Catlin and Bodmer's interactions with Mato–Tope, Waheenee offered Wilson a feminine lens into Hidatsa life. Waheenee was born in an earth lodge two years after the 1837 smallpox epidemic and grew up in a traditional family at Like–A–Fish–Hook Village, the combined Mandan and Hidatsa village formed to preserve their combined tribal identities. Frederick Douglass: From Slavery To Freedom Carl Anderson Professor Davis History 310 14 May, 2017 History Final Essay The meaning of the word "freedom" in the 19th century did not technically mean what we think of the word today. During the 19th century was the time of slavery. When we think of slavery we usually think of whites being the free ones and blacks being under slavery with the whites owning them. Not every black person was under slavery, some were able to be free from slavery but they were still being discriminized by whites. Slaves would be begin to resist by either the "day–to–day resistance" or even "silent sabotage" which was pretty much doing poor work, breaking tools, abusing animals, and even disrupting the plantation routine. During the war of Independence and War of 1812, thousands of slaves were able to gain freedom by running away to British lines though these slaves did face formidable obstacles along their way. A huge slave revolt that impacted the colonies was the Nat Turner Rebellion. A slave preacher and religious mystic in Southampton County, Virginia, Nat Turner believed that God had chosen him to lead a black uprising. Evidence from the Confessions of Nat Turner in Voices of Freedom show that Turner believes that God had chosen him when Turner states, " I was struck with that particular passage which which says: 'Seek ye the kingdom of Heaven and all things shall be added unto you.' I reflected much on this passaged, and prayed daily for light on this subject. As I was praying one day at my plough the spirit spoke to me, saying 'Seek ye the kingdom of Heaven and all things shall be added unto you" (Voices of Freedom 222). In the system, enslaved West African people were brought into the New World to be used as slave labor to replace the Indians in the encomienda system that died from diseases and being overworked by the Spanish. However, Spaniards who wanted to import slaves were heavily taxed by their king. Even so, these Spaniards continued to participate in the slave trade because they wanted to acquire some of the gold and silver that was being produced by the slave trade. Abstract This paper summarizes the theoretical and empirical research on how the introduction of derivative securities affects the underlying market. Turning to the introduction of option contracts, the non–linear payoff structure of options adds an interesting dimension to the problem, that has inspired much insightful theoretical research. As in the case for the introduction of futures, the range of theoretical possibilities is sufficiently broad as to accommodate nearly any conclusion, depending on what assumptions are made. Nevertheless, it can be quite instructive to examine this literature carefully, for in doing so we may gain valuable insights to help us gain a richer appreciation of the complicated relationships between derivative and primary assets. The Fluidity of the American Civil War The American Civil War, widely known in the United States as simply the Civil War as well as other sectional names, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union or independence for the Confederacy. Among the 34 states in January 1861, seven Southern slave states individually declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy, often simply called the South, grew to include eleven states, and although they claimed thirteen states and additional western territories, the Confederacy was never diplomatically recognized by a foreign country. The states that remained loyal and did not declare secession were known as the Union or the North. The war had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Slavery was the central source of escalating political tension in the 1850s. The Republican Party was determined to prevent any spread of slavery, and many Southern leaders had threatened secession if the Republican candidate, Lincoln, won the 1860 election. After Lincoln had won without carrying a single Southern state, many Southern whites felt that disunion had become their only option, because they thought that they were losing representation, which would hamper their ability to promote pro–slavery acts and policies. Root causes Slavery. Contemporary actors, the Union and Confederate leadership and fighting soldiers on both sides believed that slavery caused the Civil War. Union men mainly believed the war was to emancipate the slaves. Confederates fought to protect southern society, and slavery as an integral part of it. From the anti–slavery perspective, the issue was primarily about whether the system of slavery was an anachronistic evil that was incompatible with Republicanism in the United States. The strategy of the anti–slavery forces was containment – to stop the expansion and thus put slavery on a path to gradual extinction. The slave–holding interests in the South denounced this strategy as infringing upon their Constitutional rights. Southern whites believed that the emancipation of slaves would destroy the South's economy because of the alleged laziness of blacks under free labor. Slavery was illegal in the ... • 29. Unsolved Mysteries : The Lost Colony Unsolved Mysteries – The Lost Colony During the 1500's, the English started their first attempts at colonizing in the New World. One of the first colonies to settle in North America was named after the island on which they settled. That island was named the Roanoke Island. After a while of living on the island the colony had to return to England, since there had been a shortage of food and they had been attacked by nearby indians multiple times. A second group of English settlers also tried to settle on the island, but got there too late. They were not able to farm nor did they have enough supplies for everyone. The colony failed to accomplish their settlement on the island and quickly went back to England. Afterwards , a third group of colonists decided to settle in the New World. When they went low on supplies, the leader of the group decided to return to England, but when he tried to return, he was delayed. He returned three years later to find that the colony had vanished mysteriously with no trace. Many historians and anthropologists indicate different theoretical possibilities such as; the colony simply left the settlement and somehow split up, decided to live with the neighbored, Croatoan indians, or were brutally attacked by the natives. Wherever the Roanoke Colony ended up we may never know and to this day it remains a popular, unsolvable mystery. Barlowe returned to England with two Croatans named Manteo and Wanchese, who were able to explain the government and natural features of the region to Raleigh. By the 1970s the pure red wolf was thought to be extinct in the wild, but a population has since been reintroduced in North Carolina that is said to now be up to 100 red wolf. The red wolf was roamed across the south–eastern united states from Texas, to Florida, to New York. The red wolf's historical habitat included areas of forest and coastal prairies where it would of been one of the top predators. Today however, the world's red wolf population is confined to a protected area in North Carolina. The red wolf is generally smaller in size than the grey wolf, found in more northern parts of North America. Red wolves are named for their cinnamon coloured fur, which is brownish–red with dark patches on their backs. Red wolves also have broad noses and large looking ears for the size of their head. In a similar way to other canines, and other wolf species, the red wolf is a very sociable animal, living in pack with several of other red wolf's. Red wolf packs usually contain a dominant male and female and their offspring and contain between 1 and 10 members. The red wolf is also a highly territorial animal, with the red wolf pack guarding it's range from intrusion by other red wolf packs in the area. • 53. Lost City of Roanoke The story of Jamestown was one of America's first documented mysteries. There are clear facts about this voyage that have been documented. In 1587, John White did make a temporary establishment on or near Roanoke Island, and that after leaving for three years did return to the island in 1590. On his return, all traces of the colonist having lived there for those three years had vanished. No Jamestown colonist is known to be seen from again. So what happened to them during those three years? Jamestown, which was led by Governor John White, landed on Roanoke Island between April and late July 1587 and was a royal grantee of Sir Walter Raleigh. Jamestown was a small, self–supporting community that was suppose to be protected by the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other hand how long did the men awaiting Whites return stay on Roanoke Island? Old Frame houses and a commanding building had been on the island from an earlier trip in 1585 and were restored by the colonist along with an enclosure and a main entrance. This construction of the palisade involved considerable labor and must have taken some time to build. So from this most assume that the English men lived fairly conformably on the island, surviving the winter without any serious loss. This can not be established but the solidity of the barrier they build suggests it. These men expected White anytime after Easter and probably grew impatient, so there is no assurance that they stayed on the island any time after June 1588. There are only two pieces of evidence throughout the Outer Banks between 1587–1590 of the Jamestown colonist. The first was the landing of an Irish captain, William, most likely in August of 1587. Sir George Carey, a probable backer of White's expedition, governor of Isle of Wright, had sent the privateer, "Swallowe", out of its way to check on the colonist. It was on its way back to Ireland when it stopped to look for the Roanoke settlers. The Irish reported finding a stray mule and stray cattle, but no people. The Irish did try to establish contact with the colonist, but at what specific point along the Outer Banks is in question. The other piece of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. A Surprise Trip A Surprise Trip Observation Essay It was about 10:30 Saturday morning when I woke up, still feeling bad from the night before. My boyfriend decided at the last minute to surprise me and four of our children with a day at the beach the day before. We left with only the clothes on our backs and bathing suits. It was only after we arrived that we decided to stay the night. So we got us a room at the Sea Foam motel in Nags Head, NC. After I was finally able to get up from the bed, I woke the children up to get ready so we could leave. We all took showers, packed up all our belongings and headed out. It was well past the check–out time before we left, but the housekeeper just laughed and told us to take our time. We all jumped into the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My boyfriend and I watched as the seagulls flew overhead and the children tossed them breadcrumbs, ducking their heads every time one would swoop down over them. Just before we reached the Island, I caught a glimpse of a pod of dolphins swimming along in the distance. Minutes later we were able to spot the Island, so we all headed back to our vehicles as we approached Ocaracoke. Once we reached the dock, we waited in the van until it was our turn to exit. Once we had departed the ferry, we continued south on Highway 12. We passed several restaurants and gift shops on our way. There were people walking and riding bikes along the sides of the road as we drove past. It was not very long before we had reached the southern tip of the Island, so we turned around on Highway 12 and started heading back north towards the ferry. Along the way we decided to stop by one of the gift shops called "The Pirates Chest." We all went inside to look around. The shop was filled with little knick knacks, toys, shells, etc. We let each of the children pick them out something, paid the cashier and we were on our way again. Before we reached the ferry, we made one more stop by "The Dipping Dots" for some ice cream. The shop had all sorts of goodies, including cakes, brownies, fudge and candy. The children walked around the shop while we waited for the cashier to finish helping another customer. I could tell that they were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Red Drum Fishing Analysis The red drum fishing contest was just under way, and fishermen from miles around gathered on the beaches of Avon, looking for that prize winning catch. It's ironic, Morgan Menlock hated fishing, and yet, here he was, dangling from the hook of Skip Baldridge's new surf–fishing rod, complete with Momoi Diamond monofilament 130–pound line. Skip chuckled to himself that the ad was correct...the line was 200% tougher than tested strengths, because Morgan was not a small man. It had taken considerable effort to reel in this catch, and as the body reached the surface, Skip couldn't help the feeling of disappointment that washed over him. The prize money wouldn't solve all Skip's problems, but every bit helped. Dare County Sheriff Henry Roads stood ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. The Civil War And Reconstruction The largest threat to African Americans with after the Civil War and Reconstruction was the Ku Klux Klan. The KKK was founded in 1866, and extended into almost every southern state by 1870. The organization became a vehicle for white southern citizens to deny Republican Party's Reconstruction–era policies whose ideas, that tried establishing political and economic equality for African Americans. The KKK flourished in some regions in the South where, African Americans were a minority of the population. The KKK also targeted any individual or organization that would support minatory groups. Even at its height, the KKK was not a well–organized organization or had a clear leader. The organization's members where all types of people ranging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The strongest act that was passed was the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871. This act provided some protection for the African Americans and made all KKK rituals and crimes a federal offense, as said in history.com's Klu Klux Klan article, "The Ku Klux Klan Act designated certain crimes committed by individuals as federal offenses, including conspiracies to deprive citizens of the right to hold office, serve on juries and enjoy the equal protection of the law." This law did help combat the oppression in the South, but the oppression never fully ended. From the early 1870s onward, white supremacy gradually died down. However, there still were many oppression supporters by the end of 1876, even though, the entire south was under Democratic control once again. Despite all the positive changes in the South, oppression still existed and the KKK still managed to harm many African Americans. The African American people learned how to avoid the racism, and oppression. Within the First World War, much of the focus was taken off of African Americans. The prejudice never fully stopped, but the culture became more prevalent. This is most seen in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. The 1920s was a great time for many cultures, and social classes in America, and African Americans benefited greatly. The Harlem Renaissance took place from 1920 to 1935 at a time in which African American cultures flourished. Many African Americans were moving into big cities where they ... • 65. The Disappearance Of The Lost Colony In 1587, one hundred ten people, including seventeen women and nine children, sailed from Plymouth, England, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to start a new life on the Outer Banks. This colony of over one hundred people disappeared from the Roanoke Island region, never to be seen again (Kramer 2). For over 400 years, historians and archeologists have attempted to determine what happened. Although there are several popular theories regarding the disappearance of the Lost Colony, the theory with the most evidence for being accurate is the migration theory. The two previous expeditions that had been sent to this region by Sir Walter Raleigh had been unsuccessful in establishing a settlement. The first group had simply returned to England. The second group had left fifteen men to stay on the island to start a colony. The third group had expected to find these men when they arrived, but the logs of Fort Raleigh had been pulled down. One corpse was found and it became clear that the destiny of the others was not good, and none had survived ("The Lost Colony of Roanoke" 2). Prior to their departure from England in1587, the third group of colonists was misled about the area they were sent to. The previous expedition had compared Roanoke to the Garden of Eden saying, "The earth bringeth forth all things in abundance, as in the first creation, without toil or labor. The soil is the most plentiful, sweet, fruitful and wholesome of all the world." Soon after arrival it was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. The Secession Movement Of The United States Essay On January 11, 1861, the state of Alabama seceded from the Union. The secession movement was characterized by a continuous development from the time of the Wilmot Proviso until the final separation. As northern attacks on the institution of slavery began to mount, beginning with the controversy over the admission of Missouri as a slave state in 1819–20, proslavery extremists in Alabama and other Southern states increasingly referred to secession as their ultimate defense to protect their region's society and economy.("Secession", 2011) The increasing success of the new Republican Party in the North, with its adamant opposition to the expansion of slavery into the western territories, seemed proof to more and more Alabamians of the northern intention to reduce southerners to second–class citizenship in the Union. Essentially all Alabama voters, across the entire political spectrum, believed that the territories were the common property of all Americans, and therefore that all Americans should be able to go there and take their personal property, including slaves, with them. The state's wealthy planters considered slavery essential to their economy. The Republican nominee, Abraham Lincoln, whose party did not exist in Alabama or most of the South and who consequently was not a candidate there, carried every free state, thus finally providing southerners with unarguable proof that the North was determined to deny their constitutional right to settle in the territories with ... • 69. The American Civil War : The United States The American Civil War, widely known in the United States as simply the Civil War as well as other sectional names, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union or independence for the Confederacy. The war had its origin in the fractious issue of slavery, especially the extension of slavery into the western territories. After four years of combat, which left over 600,000 Union and Confederate soldiers dead and destroyed much of the South 's infrastructure, the Confederacy collapsed and slavery was abolished. Then began the Reconstruction and the processes of restoring national unity and guaranteeing civil rights to the freed slaves. In the 1860 presidential election, Republicans, led by Abraham Lincoln, opposed the expansion of slavery into U.S. territories. The Republican Party, dominant in the North, secured a majority of the electoral votes, and Lincoln was elected the first Republican president, but before his inauguration on March 4, 1861, ...
