Small Vs. Large Organic Farming
Small vs. Large
The general public sees any type of organic food as being produced "straight out of a backyard
garden" or "right off of the family farm". But is it really freshly picked tomatoes right out of
Grandma Mae's garden or chicken breast from a local farm? If the food purchased is from Whole
Foods or the organic section at Walmart, then that probably is not the case. Large organic farms are
what usually supply Whole Foods and other larger chain stores that have organics. They are not
what people initially think of when imagining the typical organic farm. They usually think of a small
plot of land with an old farmhouse, chicken coops, a red barn, and a large pasture of grass. Even
though there are still organic farms like that, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the smaller farms do not need the expensive and large equipment, they have to pay
farmhands to take care of everything by hand. Farm hands, on average, make about eleven dollars
per hour. For three farm hands that work approximately an eight hour day, cost the farm two
hundred and sixty–four dollars a day (Farm Hand). To power harvesting machinery for about an
eight hour day, would cost two hundred and eight dollars a day just for diesel costs (Edwards). So,
the price to run per day for both large and small organic farms does not have a dramatic difference.
Another quite large expense is that of transportation. Products from large farms typically supply
large markets and are usually not at small farmers markets. In order for the food to be transported
from the farm to the supermarket, they have to use fuel. Not only is this costing them much more,
but it is also affecting the environment. On the contrary, small farms typically sell their produce at
farmers markets or at their farm itself. This is not only conserving them money, but it is also
conserving fossil fuels.
Another economic factor in organic farming, in general, is that organic food is typically more
expensive that its non–organic counterpart. This observation goes along with both large and small
organic farms. When people go shopping, they often look for the cheapest item. Since

We all are living in a science world. Everything has some kind of reaction going on in our living
area. It is just we do not get to see or realize that where n how we having our life much easier than it
used to be. In these writing assignments, the topic is about the organic chemistry. In organic
chemistry, we all have different kinds of compounds. In addition, alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes are
the parts of the organic and inorganic compounds. We also can learn about the structural formula
they all have in different form. Polymerization is another type of chemical reaction that we get to ...

Above n=17 they are solids at room temperature. Although alkanes with higher values of n are
found in diesel fuel, fuel oil, petroleum jelly, motor oils. The fossil fuel resource from which we
obtain the alkanes is much valuable to burn it all as a motor fuel. Alkanes derivatives are used in
hundreds of products such as plastics, paints, drugs, cosmetics, detergent, etc. (R, N. n.d.).
Alkenes are an unsaturated chemical compound containing at least one carbon–to–carbon double
bond. The simple alkenes have only one double bond and no other functional groups. For example,
(C=C). The boiling points of each alkene are very similar to that of the alkane with the same number
of carbon atoms. In this case, the alkenes have a boiling point which is a small number of degrees
lower than the alkane. Each alkene has 2 fewer electrons than the alkane with the same number of
carbons. (Clark, J. 2003).
Hydrocarbons that contain carbon–carbon triple bonds. The triple bond adds two elements of
unsaturation. For example, (CC). They are insoluble in water. In addition, their boiling points
show the usual increase with increasing carbon number. The unsaturated nature of alkynes means
that most of their reactions will be similar to those of alkenes.
The difference between these groups is in the bond types between carbons. Alkanes form only single
bonds, alkenes form double bonds, and in alkynes, there is one triple bond. The structural formulas

Internet Shopping : Challenges And Complications In Online...
Rather than online reviews, endorsements and recommendations on e–store pages and/or social
media play a vital role for online shoppers when researching options for upcoming purchases. It was
also observed that 60% of all buying is influenced by online reviews, ratings and social media.
Pitfalls in Online Shopping: In spite of the enormous advantages it offers to the shoppers, online
shopping has its curbs also. Some of the minuses in online shopping are elaborated below: Security
and Fraud Concerns: As the online products cannot be examined before purchase, online shoppers
are at greater threat of fraud than in face–to–face transactions especially in Pakistan where FIA has
cracked down few online cases. The biggest fear for customers is their payment and identity details
can be stolen, letting criminals and hackers' access to their bank accounts, credit cards and other
online accounts. Lack of Full Price Disclosure: It is sometimes problematic for the online buyers as
they can easily compare the real amount of a product online but can't view the total up–front until
placing an order. Additional charges such as shipping and handling fees are mostly not visible until
completing the checkout process. This problem is especially present in cross–city purchases where
the price showed on the final checkout page may not comprise extra fees but is to be paid upon
delivery. Confidentiality: Secrecy of personal data is a major issue for most customers as they want

World 's Increasing Demand For Energy Essay
World's increasing demand for energy is fulfilled by different sectors (like Oil, Coal, Natural Gas,
Hydro, Nuclear and others). Fossil fuels remain the dominant source of energy powering the world
economy, supplying 60% of the energy increase out to 2035. Within that, gas looks set to become
the fastest growing fossil fuel, spurred on by ample supplies and supportive environmental policies.
1.1 BACKGROUND
From the advert of the modern oil and gas industry, petroleum geologists and engineers have
followed a conventional route for exploration; look for hydrocarbon source rocks, find reservoir
quality rocks where hydrocarbons can accumulate, identify a trapping mechanism and then drill a
well. But a revolution is taking place in the exploration and production (E&P) industry. Rocks that
in the past were of little interest, other than as potential source rocks, are today being actively
pursued as potential reservoirs. When considering unconventional resource plays, the focus is on
finding organic shale's. This development represents a fundamental shift in the way exploration
companies consider resource plays. Engineers and geologists studying shale gas resources find that
reservoir can lead to process adaptation and refinement of techniques. It is important to integrate
data from many sources and at many scales to optimally drill, complete and stimulate wells to
produce hydrocarbons from their source rocks. The two other type of existing unconventional gas
resources are

Organic Vs Non-Organic Foods
While we all love food and it's a necessity to live there are now two categories of food. Organic and
non–organic, this can be any food from meats to dairy to fruits and so on just about everything today
can be put to one side or the other. Through the use of evidence and explanations, the difference
between organic and non–organic will be shown in depth providing for a decision to be made
between the two. There are many food groups that can be divided between non–organic and organic
foods the two that will be discussed today are meats and vegetables or fruits. Organic meats are any
animals that aren't fed modified food. This means that animals such as cows, pigs, and even
chickens are given food like grass and hay. This in order to be considered organic the animals must
be able to live and walk among outdoors(Robinson, Segal 4). The food for the animals is also treated
with natural methods to prevent diseases(Robinson, Segal 4). The main reason that people steer
away from organic is the price compared to non–organic is more. In fact, the organic meat can cost
more than 70% more than non–organic meats(Marks 14). Now let's talk about non–organic meat
which has many differences compared to organic. The way organic meat is raised is different
because it can be raised outdoors or inside crammed together with thousands of other
animals(Robinson, Segal 4). The feeding of non–organic can involve growth hormones which allow
the animals to grow faster. Genetically Modified

Organic Food Is Better Than Conventional Food
Organic food is a current topic in today's healthful world. There are different sides to the organic
food argument. One is that organic food is much better than conventional food. The other is that
conventional food is just as good as organic and more for your dollar. To some families organic food
is more then they can afford because of the extra work that is required to grow it. People say that
organic food is better because it has no chemicals or fertilizer in it but that is not true because they
do put fertilizer on it just "natural" fertilizer that is certified by the USDA. Conventional food which
to many people think is not safe because of the chemicals in it but it is just as safe as organic food.
Some organic food is not completely chemical free. Certified organic is the most chemical free but
not completely. According to the Mayo Clinic if the produce has a USDA organic seal on it then it is
95 to 100 percent organic. "Products that are completely organic – such as fruits, vegetables, eggs or
other single–ingredient foods – are labeled 100 percent organic and can carry the USDA seal. Foods
that have more than one ingredient, such as breakfast cereal, can use the USDA organic seal plus the
following wording, depending on the number of organic ingredients, 100 percent organic. To use
this phrase, products must be either completely organic or made of all organic ingredients. Organic.
Products must be at least 95 percent organic to use this term" (Are They Safe?).

Choosing Organic Food : The Benefits Of Organic Food
If you could improve your odds of living longer, would you do it? Simply avoiding certain foods
can lead to an increased life span. It boils down to, do you eat any organic food? Choosing to
consume organic food is one way to drastically improve your health. At first glance you may be
wondering what's the big deal, it's just food after all, and that is where you are wrong. Organic food
is the way food is meant to be prepared and eaten, unfortunately due to business tactics, the food
industry has gotten out of hand and most of the food available at your local grocery store contains
food with dangerous ingredients. There are many benefits to eating mainly organic food some of
which include; health benefits, sustainable agriculture and fair animal treatment.
WORKING OUTLINE:
1.The health benefits aren't obvious just by looking at an organic chicken vs a "regular" chicken,
however if you look at the packaging you can see the immediate differences. It all starts with how
the food is prepared. Chickens for example are raised very differently depending on whether they
are deemed organic or not. If a chicken is not organic then it is subjected to harsh living
environments. They live in tiny metal cages with no room to move, with the only goal of producing
eggs and meat. While in these cramped quarters, the chickens don't get to exercise and get stressed,
they are not able to stay healthy and disease is born. And since all the chickens live side by side,
disease spreads very

The Effects Of Pesticides On Organic Farming
Humans initially began farming organically when European farmers noticed a decrease in soil
quality and crop health due to the use of chemical fertilizers ("Pesticides in Organic..." 1). This drop
in soil quality left the farmers no other choice but to cease the use of chemical fertilizers and begin
implementing less harmful supplements in order to improve crop quality ("An Oral History..."). This
less invasive method of farming, otherwise known as organic farming, takes into account "the
medium and long–term effect of agricultural interventions" ("What Are the Environmental...") to
strengthen environmental sustainability. Alternatively, industrial farming addresses problems as they
arise, whereas organic farming ensures a less destructive way of living by taking preventative
measures associated with the environment and health. As more consumers switch to the organic
lifestyle, this proactive trend is estimated to grow at an annual rate of 14% until 2018 within the
United States (Daniells). The estimated growth rate of the organic food market is significantly
higher than the growth rate of the conventional food market (Daniells), thereby making "organic
sales account for over 4 percent of total U.S. food sales" (USDA–ERS). According to the USDA,
this organic trend has implemented organic products in roughly three out of four conventional
grocery stores in the United States ("USDA–ERS"). While conventional farmers are not losing all of
their buyers, many consumers have appealed to

Organic Vineyards Vs Non Organic Wine
There are many differences between organic vineyards and non–organic vineyards like for example,
organic vineyards produce their wine excluding the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides,
fungicides and herbicides while non–organic vineyards on the other hand do produce their wine
applying those products. Every year that passes our generation is becoming more and more
advanced in many things, including the usage of organic products. Many things sold at groceries
stores are now available organically, like fruits and other types of nourishments and soon many
things will be made organically. The pros and cons of non–organic and organic vineyards both have
good arguments that can really change the opinions of many people but if you had to chose between
one or the other, which one would you pick?
Whenever something is organic, everyone believes that its healthy but not all organic things are as
healthy as they seem to always be portrayed. Some cons organic wine has is that organic wine does
not contain sulfite, which people claim reduces its shelf life and in some cases changes its flavors
("Clearing up the Confusion about Organic Wine"). Organic wine also brings a much more healthier
option to the table and it has also become more popular in recent years throughout the Napa Valley.
A pro is that organic wine doesn't contain artificial chemical fertilizers which could possibly cause
some sort of long term effect. You never know what artificial chemical fertilizers

Enzyme Catalase Lab Report
Introduction:
A catalyst speeds up a reaction by lowering the activation energy that is used to start it. There are
both organic and inorganic catalysts–one being an enzyme. An enzyme is an organic catalyst that
speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed by the reaction. Enzymes are
proteins, meaning that they have a unique structure that dictates what their function is. This unique
structure also determines what substrate, or specific reactant, the enzyme will catalyze. From there,
the substrate and enzyme bind together; which leads to the reactants being created.
The enzyme tested during this experiment was the enzyme catalase. This is an enzyme that is found
in both plant and animal cells, and is found in large ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As shown in figure 1: tube 1, the control group (with a plastic bead as the catalyst), did not have any
reaction. Tube 2 (containing the manganese dioxide as a catalyst), however, did have a reaction– its
rate was a 1 out of 4. Tubes 3 (with potato as the catalyst) and 4 (with liver as the catalyst) both had
bigger reactions, with tube 4 being the highest rating. Tube 3 was rated a 2 out of 4, and tube 4, with
the biggest reaction, was rated a 4 out of 4.
As exhibited in figure 2, tube 1 (with room temperature liver as the catalyst) was the biggest
reaction with a rate of 4 out of 4. Tube 2 (containing heated liver as the catalyst) did not have any
reaction, leading it to have a 0 out of 4 rating. The 3rd tube, containing cooled liver as the catalyst,
was the second biggest reaction with a rating of 3 out of 4. The last 2 tubes, 4 (with heated
manganese dioxide as the catalyst) and 5 (containing cooled manganese dioxide as the catalyst), had
very small reactions and were both rated 1 out of 4. Discussion/Conclusion
From this lab, I have discovered a lot of important information regarding enzymes and enzyme
function. For instance, during part 1 of the lab, I found out that manganese dioxide is not as effective
at catalyzing reactions than catalase is. This leads me to believe that enzymes as a whole are
sometimes more effective than non–organic catalysts. While the manganese dioxide created 2 cm
worth of bubbles, the

Organic Farming Produces Organic Food
Eat it if you can Pronounce It The word Organic can be defined in multiple ways but what the word
basically means that the product is derived from living matter. Organic farming produces organic
food. The goal is to encourage soil and water conservation, reduce pollution, and constrain
conventional methods to fertilize and control weeds. According to the U.S Food and Drug
Administration "The term "organic" is not defined by law or regulations FDA enforces." Foods that
are organic does not necessarily mean that they are healthy. There are organically refined unhealthy
foods such as wholesome branded cane sugar and Applegate branded pork sausages products that
are labeled as organic but is obviously not the healthiest choice. Labeling a food product as organic
does not make consumption completely healthy for infants. Drug Administration Organic produce
derives from farming involving growth without using any type of genetically modified organisms,
synthetic fertilizers, sewage, and pesticides. When meat products are organically refined the animals
the meat comes from do not receive any antibiotics or hormones that manipulate growth increase.
The department of the United States government that is responsible for programming anything
related to food, agriculture and nutrition (USDA) defines organic as "food produced by farmers who
emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance
environmental quality for future generations.

Gmos Vs Organic Foods
Is organic agriculture really worth the extra cost? GMOs are the most efficient farming method due
to a decrease in input costs, which saves the farmers more money. Organic foods cost more, but do
they really offer more nutritional value? The answer is no, GMOs have nearly the same nutritional
value as organic, and cost less. Meaning that the use of GMOs are way more efficient than the use of
organic. Some agronomists say that genetic modification can actually decrease crop yields. A new
study shows that a change in Technology is needed to solve the world's food crisis. The study carried
out over the past three years at the University of Kansas has found that GM soy products produce 10
per cent less food than conventional. Professor Barney Gordon, of the university's department of

A Nebraska University study suggested that it takes time to modify a plant, and while this is being
done, better conventional crops are being developed.(Fox) Monsanto continues to work on
perfecting germplasm and crop breeding. Plant breeders use a mix of traditional and modern
methods to improve plants. Modern methods include marker assisted breeding, which allows
breeders to use a blueprint of the genome to select seeds with the most desirable traits. Marker
assisted breeding helps speed up the time it takes to do traditional breeding.GM traits help to
increase yields by protecting the crop that would be lost due to insects or weeds. If weeds and
insects are controlled well, then the insect and herbicide tolerance traits will not be the only factor in
increased yield. For example statistics stated by PG Economics, taken by data from numerous
studies around the world. Even where insect and herbicide tolerance are not the only factors in
increasing yield, they provide many other benefits. PG Economics also showed that GM crops are
credited with decreasing pesticide and fuel use, and with conservation tillage

"Natural vs Artificial" Are organic foods healthier than conventional foods? Do they give you a
longer life than conventional foods? Have you stopped and wondered how the conventional foods

Organic Foods Vs. Genetically Modified Organism
The argument of whether or not people should eat GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) or
organic foods has been a debate for a long time. Organic food benefits health far more than
genetically modified food that contains pesticides and animals that are raised on antibiotics growth
hormones. Non–GMO foods are also safer for the environment in many ways: it conserves water,
reduces soil erosion, increases soil fertility, reduces pollution, uses less energy, and does not affect
the animals that live close to farms or graze on the farm like birds and chickens (Robinson). Yet
GMO's are beneficial society as food is produced in abundance and due to herbicides plant
epidemics are not as common as they use to be. There are both positives and negatives to both sides
of the argument, but there is common ground to be reached and identified. Organic food is healthier
for both the environment and the bodies of people and animals that surround farming sites. The

Organic Food Vs. Commercial Food Essay
Organic Food VS. Commercial Food
Food is a necessary ingredient in the soup of survival. As society advances it becomes an
increasingly simple process to acquire any type of food––regardless of its country of origin or
whichever season it happens to be––as long as you can pay for it. As a result of such ease in
selecting meals, you have the choice of eating whatever you want. The problem with this ability is
that people do not always choose the food that is the healthiest for them or that is produced in the
healthiest ways. Over the past few decades, it has become a general consensus that organic food is
simply better than non–organic food, however not many people truly understand what "better"
entails. Proper "healthy" food should taste good, provide a sufficient amount of nutrients, and should
be grown in a manner that avoids harmful chemicals and other additives or supplements that alter
the food itself. Organic food best met this criteria by tasting fresher, providing more than enough
nutrients, and being grown in a manner that forgoes synthetic pesticides and other harmful additives
which can lead to nausea, hormonal imbalances, and eventually even cancer. .
What most people don 't realize is that organic food is nothing new. Prior to World War I all crops
were organic. It was not until after both World Wars synthetic pesticides were created as an outlet
for the toxic chemical aftermath of both mustard gas and nerve poison ("Synthetic Pesticides").

Centuries ago, ancient civilizations learned how to take plants that they found flourishing in nearby
areas and grow them conveniently for their own use. The advancement of technology, and the
evolution of farming practices has created a great variance from the simplistic idea of putting a seed
in the ground, adding some water, and hoping it will grow. Currently, a debate amongst the farming

By rotating crops, studies have shown that it can increase the yield, lower the cost of crop
production, and decrease the amount of additives needed to make a strong crop. Rotation has also
been known to benefit physical properties of the soil like tilts, and bulk density, and also contribute
to efficient use of plant nutrients found in soil.
The organic practice of using cover crops, also known as green manure, is done to feed and provide
micro flora and fauna in the soil with nutrients. Cover cropping prevents the growth of problematic
bacteria, diseases, and insects by supplying beneficial organisms the foundation they need to thrive
in the soil. For centuries farmers have used green manure, but in recent times it has been replaced by
the use of herbicides and fertilizers. This practice has multiple benefits for the soil including soil
tilth, water infiltration, and reduction of sealing. It provides erosion control, adds to the fertility of
5
the soil, suppresses the growth of weeds, and encourages the growth of beneficial insects.
There are two main types of green manure, legumes and non–legumes. Legumes benefit the soil by
adding much needed Nitrogen, it does this by fixing atmospheric Nitrogen into a form plants can
use. Non–legumes recycle excess Nitrogen into Phosphorus and
Potassium, two other highly need nutrients for the success of crops. The use of a cover crop does
require a little planning

Policy Paper : Gmos Are The Problem !
Policy Paper: GMOs are the Problem! When grocery shopping, we are faced with the question, " Do
we choose organic or the conventional products?" For some people, this may be an easy question
depending on how much you want to spend, or if you choose organic products regardless of the
price. However, no matter what an individual chooses, we will always be skeptical of the quality
difference in grocery produce. Is organic milk that much different? Is it healthier than the
conventional milk in the isle? Will it protect you from pathogens? These questions are foreign to the
grab and go set of individuals, however King Corn, a documentary based on the overproduction of
corn, gives readers an insight on how chemicals and GMOs in our food supply are affecting people
all over the country. While there are positive aspects of producing and consuming conventional
food, we should carefully investigate what is in our food system and how we can identify the
differences between certified organic and conventional. When purchasing organic produce, one
might notice that there are noticeable physical differences between organic and non–organic
produce. For example, when looking to purchase a banana, most of the organic ones come in various
shapes and sizes whereas the non–organic ones look relatively the same. The explanation for the
variety of shapes and sizes is unprocessed produce that is treated with growth enhancing substances.

informative about the dangers of GMOs. Until this greed based system is a thing of the past, this
industry can not be trusted. The boycotting of these "technologies" is a must if we want to survive as

in the process. This may seem dramatic or like an exaggeration to some, but it is the blunt truth

Non Gmo Foods Research Paper
Gmo foods and non–gmo foods are to complete different groups food that it is involved with our
health. Each group is categorized as being organic, and non–organic foods. All is involved with the
health in humanity, and each has its description on how they are labeled in the community. Gmo and
non–gmo are two distinct groups which can involve health, what is contain, and what can the cause.
Gmo foods are non organic foods, and they can contain types of chemicals in foods that we are not
aware of which can hurt the health. Many stores have gmo foods in stock mainly in cereals, bread,
or the types of food that are engineer. All these types of food with gmo are more likely to be labeled
in the back or in the front of a food. Gmo foods contain

Daylesford Organic Farm Concept Hello, everyone. Today I will be discussing the prospect of an
organic farm–based business that I feel would be very beneficial for our company. To begin, I would
like to talk about an already successful business based on the organic farm concept that is present in
the United Kingdom. The name of this business is Daylesford and its purpose for this discussion is
to look at it as somewhat of a template as to what our eventual business can be. First, we should take
a look at a brief overview of the Daylesford Organic Farm concept. According to author Gwenda

In regards to income, more specifically, 35% of people considered as organic consumers earn more
than $50,000 as opposed to the non–organic consumer which comprises a total of 30%. Finally,
taking into account the geographic location of the common organic consumer, the majority of them
are concentrated in the Western and Midwestern regions of the United States ("Marketing", 2011). I
think you will find that all of these elements combined will be of great help in targeting our potential
market for organic products. The Value Proposition Now, I would like to discuss the benefits that
our organic–based business will offer to our target customers. First, as far as the functional benefits
are concerned, one of the key factors is that organic produce offers the consumer a healthier option
when it comes to one's eating habits. In regards to chemicals, organic produce refrains from using
any kind of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides or synthetic preservatives and
additives. As such, the amounts of hazardous residues within organic foods are basically restricted to
the lowest amount ("Organic", n.d.). In terms of emotional benefits, our organic business can
provide the good feeling that customers will have knowing they are choosing a much healthier

Organic products produce may go bad quickly.
Part 3 Pros – Organic foods is good for nature. According to big oven.com, organic farms produce
less waste and use less energy compared to inorganic farms. Synthetic pesticides that are used in
conventional food can harm local wildlife. Organic farms make sure that their animals are fed a
natural diet and kept in "free– range conditions".
Rebuttal – Conventional food waste can be reused in the farms where conventional foods are grown.
If this is done then farmers can spray their fruits and vegetables with less pesticides because it is
already in the soil and fights off bugs.
Conclusion – Overall, organic food is worth buying which is healthy for the body and helps the
environment. Conventional foods are affordable that last long, and are protected from bacteria and
insects. Now that you have information on the two, how would you choose?

How Organic Food Is Better Than Buying And Eating The Non...
Introduction
In today's world, there is a lot of emphasis on the kind of food that we consume in daily routine.
One such issue claims that eating organic food is much better than buying and eating the non –
organic food (D. Mosbergen July 2014). Certain studies point to the fact that the organic food that is
available in almost every market is the best healthy option available whereas others say that it is no
good but a tactical business strategy for increasing the sales of products labelled as "Organic".
While surfing through the internet and also while reading newspapers, one can see the influence
these USDA approved label food item have on the general public. It has been in the controversy for
a long time about labelling a certain food item as organic. But, what really is organic. Some people
are misinformed about the organic food being the food that is resistant in a certain protein (for
example, Gluten – free) or some other component of food (For example, B – fatty acids, low – fat).
But as per the USDA guidelines, foods are "organic" if they "integrate cultural, biological, and
mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve
biodiversity" (Wikipedia). As one can make out from the definition, Organic food refers to
avoidance in the use of synthetic chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides; avoidance of much
controversial genetically modified crops; usage of farmland that is prohibited from the chemically
synthesized

A Summary Of Organic Farming In Washington State
Washington State is a major crop producing state in the United States. According to the Washington
State Department of Agriculture in 2013 Washington State had 37,249 farms, led by apple orchards
which contribute 70 percent of the nation's apple production (2015).With this amount of produce
grown in Washington going organic could boost the economy of the state and have a huge effect on
the health of Americans as well as protecting the environment. If Washington farmers (especially the
apple farmers) start growing organically that would mean 70 percent of the nation's apples would be
organic, that is a huge step for organic produce. The pesticides used in non–organic farming are
harmful to the health of our children and the elderly. They are

Synthetics Affecting The Human Body
Synthetics in general have been an idealistic way to replace human skin cells for burn victims and
people who have skin problems like cancer or Birth defect that causes the muscle tissue to be

(Also commonly found in Marijuana also known as K2) they can have certain effects on the human
body that are either good or bad; synthetics we are focusing on is skin manipulation that is usually

Bear in mind, that some consumer advocacy organizations such as the Natural Ingredient Resource
Center (NIRC) considers a product "all natural", if it contains at least 95% of ingredients which fits
their criteria for natural ingredients. The other 5% may come from ingredients that do not meet their
criteria for natural, but do not contain synthetic fragrances, artificial colors or ingredients from
petrochemicals. The toxicity of each ingredient must also be minimal. So a product label which
reads, "All Natural," may not be same as one that states, "100% All Natural." In addition to not
using synthetics during the production process, organic foods are not genetically modified and do
not contain any chemical food additives or solvents. Many industrialized countries including the
United States require special certification for producers to list foods as organic. Therefore, organic
food is distinct from private gardening or natural foods. Organic refers to both the food itself and the
food production process used to produce the finished food product. In the United States, the Organic
Foods Production Act of 1990 in combination with Title 7, Part 205 of the Code of Federal
Regulations list the specific site requirements and standards required for producers to sell foods as
organic. Pros Benefits associated with organic foods. First, the organic farming

Treatment Methods On Physical And Chemical Characteristics...
Treatment methods:
Suitability of various treatment methods depends on physical and chemical characteristics of waste
(Fig.1). The method of treatment is decided based on moisture content, organic matter and total
solids.
Biological Properties of MSW
Excluding plastic, rubber, and leather components, the organic fraction of most MSW can be
classified as follows:
1. Water–soluble constituents, such as sugars, starches, amino acids, and various organic acids.
2. Hemicellulose, a condensation product of five– and six–carbon sugars,
3. Cellulose, a condensation product of the six–carbon sugar glucose
4. Fats, oils, and waxes which are esters of alcohols and long–chain fatty acids,
5. Lingnin, a polymeric material containing aromatic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of VS in describing the biodegradability of the organic fraction of MSW is misleading, as
some of the organic constituents of MSW are highly volatile but low in biodegradability (e.g.,
newsprint and certain plant trimmings). Alternatively, the lignin content of a waste can be used to
estimate the biodegradable fraction, using the following relationship [8]:
BF = 0.83 – 0.028 LC 8
where BF= biodegradable fraction expressed on a volatile solids (VS) basis 0.83 = empirical
constant 0.028 = empirical constant LC = lignin content of VS expressed as a percent of dry weight
As shown in Table 7, wastes with high lignin contents, such as newsprint, are significantly less
biodegradable than the other organic wastes found in MSW.
4.hazardous waste definition
Characteristics of Hazardous Waste The Environmental Protection Agency of America (EPA)
defines the characteristics of hazardous waste as:
1. Flammability and Ignitability The waste burns or explodes with the application of fire, friction,
electricity spark, or any source of heat; wastes with high ignitable potential and/or which burn
vigorously and persistently. Such wastes have a flash point of less than 600 C. Examples: solvent
washes, waste oil, alcohols, aldehydes, paint wastes, petroleum wastes, cleaning solvents, etc. Flash

– The "problem statement" to these three articles is to see if organic farming is capable of sustaining
the global population by weighing the pros and cons of organic vs conventional farming. 2. Who are
the authors and what are their qualifications? – First author, DiGregori has neither expertise or
credential; he is a phD in Economics and does not have any experience dealing with agronomy nor
did he cite anyone. Second author, Vasilikiotis, is well–qualified for writing about this article
subject. Vasilikiotis has a phD in agricultural and biological sciences, meaning that he has done
research in this field and is knowledgeable. He also has cited many other researches done by
scientists and elaborated on the results. The third author, Stockdale, has a phD in physics so he
doesn't have any expertise in the field. However, he has a couple of citations from other scientists
and researchers that seems credible. 3. Clearly define pseudoscience. Explain why we need to be
cautious of pseudoscience with this issue. – Pseudoscience is science that cannot be tested or
proven. It usually derives from faulty non–empirical logic and is hard to spot due to fake citations
and similarity to real science. We should be caution of pseudoscience because it is ubiquitous in the
scientific world and can be detrimental when used to support a scientific claim. 4. Discuss

The Benefits of Organics Essay
Organic or non–organic? That is the question! And the answer to this question happens to be
organic. I'd love think that everyone shares my thoughts on this but others aren't so willing to accept
this. The fact is that the majority of the population doesn't agree with my opinion that going organic
leads to a healthier life–style. As it is there is constant debate as to whether chemically processed
foods are better than organically grown foods, mind you both sides have their pros and cons, but in
the end organic is the obvious choice. Yet despite the apparent win that organic products have over
its counterpart, people still don't fully understand what is wrong with the chemically processed.
What is worse yet is that the public typically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead organic farmers use natural fertilizers like green manure, compost, and cover crops to put
nutrients back in the soil. In addition, methods such as crop rotation and hand weeding are used to
create a more diverse ecological system to naturally grow pest's predators.
Healthy seeds are selected and used in Organic farming, seeds that are genetically altered are not
used. As far as livestock are concerned: they are given a proper diet, and adequate exposure to the
outdoors. Good animal treatment standards or husbandry as they call it are maintained in organic
farming. No antibiotics are used on animals, but homeopathic medicine is used, just in case an
animal gets sick. If a farmer gives antibiotics to an animal, he loses his certificate for organic
farming and he has to start all over and earn his certificate again. Growth hormones are also not
used in organic animal husbandry.
The concept of being organic is by no means a new thing. In fact if you go back you'll realize that
organic farming was the way of things, not because people were more health conscience or
anything, but simply because there wasn't any other way. There was no need for these chemicals. So
where did our modern farming techniques come from? Easy; the 1930's just wasn't a great time for

What To Eat?
For the average Joe life is always on the go. With live moving so fast it can be hard to maintain a
healthy lifestyle. This becomes all the more difficult when the only thing presented to consumers are
unhealthy food options. The main point in life is to try and stay healthy but, the constant trouble of
advertising for unhealthy foods and whether to go organic or not makes this goal seem impossible.
With all the advertisements for these organic and non–gmo foods, there is an understandable amount
of confusion as to what is and what is not considered a food that helps prevent illness and promotes
a healthy lifestyle. In reality there is not a huge difference between Gmos and organics foods.

They're safer for consumption, fruits and vegetables that are organic are typically grown without
chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Livestock raised under organic practices aren't fed antibiotics or
growth hormones. Organic foods are better for the the environment. Organic farming is made to be
not reliant on any synthetic methods or chemicals. They're healthier because they have more
vitamins and minerals compared to conventionally grown food. Of these three reasons, there has
been no strong evidence supporting any of these claims for organic foods
"The decision in whether or not to buy organic food is a decision that only you can make based on
your family's needs and wants, and your budget. If you're buying organic solely for better nutrition,
based on this review there's no evidence you're gaining any real advantages; but if you're concerned
about pesticides and you can afford organics, it might be worth it to buy them" (S. Watson).
For many people, cost is the deciding factor. Organic foods are more expensive–and often
significantly more so–than non–organic. Not everyone has the budget to make sure that all of their
groceries ar hormone –free, non–gmo and has no synthetic pesticides. But, there are organic

Preventive medical care in the form of vaccines, vitamins, minerals and any approved supplements
is strongly relied on to keep the animals as healthy as possible. The process used to bottle and
pasteurize the milk produced from these cows must also be certified and the organic milk has to be
kept separate from nonorganic milk to uphold its integrity as an organic commodity. Other
ingredients used in this process all have to be organic unless there is no organic equivalent. Organic
chemicals like volatile synthetic solvents and other synthetic processing aids are also prohibited
during the bottling process further upholding the integrity of the milk.
Critics of the certification system argue that it's easy to flout the rules either blatantly or by
creatively interpreting the rules and the regulations. An example of this occurred in 2004 when
Bayliss ranch, a food ingredient producer, based in California tried to use the fact that because the
tap water that they were using in their products had been certified organic, they could legally use the
label "organic" on their products. These critics also argue that the certification process provides a
podium by which special interest groups and lobbyists can press for amendments and exceptions to
established rules and regulations favorable to large scale operators meaning that conventionally

Organic Chemistry : Organic Vs. Inorganic Chemistry
I selected organic chemistry because honestly it looks like a very interesting topic. Before doing
research on this topic the knowledge I had before about organic chemistry was that it has something
to do with food. After doing research I found out that I was way off track. I learned that in the late
1820's was when organic chemistry was stumbled upon. In 1828 Friedrich Wohler produce the
organic chemical rued, a mixture of urine from inorganic starting Materials. This is now called the
Wohler Synthesis. This was the first time a substance thought to be organic was made in the
laboratory without any biological starting material. In the late 1850s organic chemistry was
stumbled upon again. In 1856 William Henry Perkin accidentally produced an organic dye known as
Perkin while he was trying to manufacture quinine. As you can see organic chemistry was kind of
just stumbled upon. Well I've came to that conclusion in my research. This paper was so organic
chemistry and how are use it today, how we've used it in the past, and how we are working to
develop it.
While reading an article called Organic VS Inorganic Chemistry I learned of a lot of interesting
things. This article talks about how some carbon molecules are not considered organic, with carbon
dioxide being the most well known and most inorganic carbon compound. Those such molecules are
the exception and not the rule. The article also talks about how organic chemistry focuses on carbon

Essay On Gmo Labeling
When talking about GMO foods and labeling, I think that people first off need to understand what a
GMO actually is. A GMO is a Genetically Modified Organism. A GMO is an organism that has had
its DNA altered. GMOs give farmers the potential to increases their crop production and their
profitability by planting GMO seed. Many agriculture crops that use mostly GMOs now are corn,
soy, sugar beets, dairy, yellow squash, cotton and zucchini. Farmers use GMOs to protect their crops
from insects, pesticides and various weather conditions. People often wonder if GMO food is safe to
consume. It isn't right for people to say that GM seeds are harmful because there is no nutritional
characteristics that differ from GM foods vs Non–GM foods. There are obviously two different
sides. There are people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Companies that are for organic, Non–GM foods like to put huge food labels on their products to
draw people in. It also makes them think that they have some nutritional value to offer that GM
foods don't offer. I think if people knew the approval process that GM seeds have to undergo by the
FDA, USDA and EPA then they would realize that GM foods aren't harmful. All of these
administrations conduct mandatory reviews to make sure GM seeds are safe to grow, good for the
environment and good to consume. I think if the food label says Non–GMO or organic then people
automatically assume that it is healthier. Many companies will make their labels huge so that people
do not notice the important stuff; they just see that it says organic so it has to be the best, right? If all
of these researches show that there really is no difference in GMO vs Non–GMO other than how the
crop is grown, I do not understand why people are still buying Non–GMO foods since their more
expensive. I am a firm believer that people need to know where their food is coming from and have

Agriculture : A Global Environmental And Humanitarian Issue
Agriculture uses the domestication and cultivation of animals, plants, fungi and other life forms to
produce food, fiber, biofuel, medicinal and other products to help sustain and enhance human life.
Agriculture has existed for over the last 10,000 years and is credited into propelling our civilization
into the modern cultures and technologies we see today. Without the ability to store and domesticate
plants and animals it is unlikely that we would have been able to evolve beyond our hunting and
gathering ancestors, advancing in both the arts and sciences. Modern agricultural though has
developed into a global environmental and humanitarian issue. With the ever growing human
population, our ability to sustain arable land is posing a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the population continues to grow, so will our methods of production. Helping to save the planet is
the ultimate goal, but in order to do so we will first need to save ourselves. Thomas Malthus was
one of the first scientists to investigate the principles of population growth and the concept of
carrying capacity. Malthus came to realize that the growth of a population relied upon, and was
directly related to the amount of available resources needed to survive. Malthus acknowledged that
if a population became too large, surpassing its carrying capacity, it would eventually be checked by
what is known as a Malthusian catastrophe (i.e. famine and disease). We can induce this concept
when observing a culture of bacteria, or more simply a pasture of farming sheep, first observed as
the tragedy of the commons. Today we are already seeing symptoms of overpopulation, as a
significant number of our population dies every day because of malnutrition, starvation and disease.
So have we already surpassed our carrying capacity? Or are these issues of food security merely a
result of affluent nations tipping the scale in their favor? Many people say that we have enough food
to feed the current world population, so the issue then becomes how this food is distributed. When
considering the amount of food that gets thrown away each year and the rising obesity rates in the
United States, it's hard to argue. Aldo

One of their arguments was that animal agriculture is responsible for things that impact the

they presented was that animal agriculture takes up a lot of our water. To help their argument they

water consumption ranges from 34–76 trillion gallons annually. A lot of this water is used to grow

Vegetarian Vs. Meat Eater
Vegetarian VS. Meat Eater There are two main lifestyles that we as human beings practice that
impact our eating habits. One being a Vegetarian, a person who chooses not to eat meat. The other
being a Meat Eater (also known as an Omnivore), a person who chooses to eat both meat and
vegetables. A controversial debate continues to go on, evaluating the pros and cons of each group,
along with the reasons behind their choice. In the end it all depends on the individual's outlook on
life that makes the decision. Some individuals may have chosen to be Vegetarian for health
purposes, or out of respect for animals. The health benefits of not eating meat may reduce the risk of
a Heart Attack, Cancer, and Type 2 Diabetes. Meat contains saturated fat. Consuming excessive
amounts of meat may cause clogged arteries. Clogged arteries force your heart to beat faster, in
order to pump blood through the arteries, resulting in high blood pressure. Compounds broken down
in meat produce fatty build up causing clogged arteries, and in some cases resulting in a heart attack.
Preservatives, such as nitrate, are used to prevent bacteria in processed meat, and are known to
cause cancer. Red meat is high in iron and may diminish insulin's effectiveness of converting sugar
into energy causing diabetes. Some may believe, that vegetarians are more likely to be anemic due
to the lack of meat in their diet. But in fact, all eleven necessary vitamins and minerals are easily
obtained by consuming either

The Basic Economics of Organic versus Non-Organic Foods
Personally, I am fortunate to live in an area that has a fairly wide array of organic foods. There is a
healthy mix of large supermarkets and small, independent grocers that sell organic foods.
Using the Mayo Clinic as a reference, I have developed the following opinion on organic foods that
takes into account the financial aspects as well as the health ramifications of eating or not eating
organic foods.
The basic economics of Organic versus Non–Organic foods are as follows:
Non–Organic
These foods are grown using fertilizers, herbicides and pesticide use, and may or may not be a
genetically altered plant that grows at a rate many times that of a regular plant. The potato is one
such example. Because of the fast growing rates and high crop yield due to the use of pesticides and
other unnatural components, this allows the firm to sell the plant at low costs to maximize on their
marginal cost (the benefit of producing or selling one more unit of output). If a firm in a completely
fair competitive market desires to make money, they will sell more units at a lower cost, so long as
the number of units doesn't incur a negative marginal cost.
Organic
No additives, no preservatives; nothing is added to these products that is not naturally present in
their growing process. This is what makes organic so expensive. Without the aid of GMO's,
herbicides, pesticides and preservatives added later, these food products have lower yield rates,
lower shelf life, longer growth rate,

Organic Vs Non Organic Vineyards
Organic vs Non Organic Vineyards
There's many differences between organic vineyards and non–organic vineyards. Organic vineyards,
for instance, produce their wine by excluding the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides,
fungicides and herbicides. Non–organic vineyards on the other hand, produce their wine by applying
these products. Every year that goes by, our generation is becoming more advanced in the usage of
organic products. Many things sold in groceries stores are now available organically, for instance
fruits and other types of nourishments. The positives and negatives of non–organic and organic
vineyards both have good arguments but in my opinion organic vineyards tend to have more of a
positive effect in our society. Whenever something is organic, everyone believes that it's healthy, but
that is not the case, not all organic things are as healthy as they are portrayed to be. Some negatives
of organic wine are that organic wine does not contain sulfite, which people claim it reduces its shelf
life and in some cases changes its flavors ("Clearing up the Confusion about Organic Wine").
Organic wine also brings a much healthier option to the table; in recent years it has become more
popular throughout the Napa Valley. A positive note about organic wine is that organic wine doesn't
contain artificial chemical fertilizers which could possibly cause some long term side effects to the
human body. One never knows what artificial chemical fertilizers consist

Small Vs. Large Organic Farming

  • 1. Small Vs. Large Organic Farming Small vs. Large The general public sees any type of organic food as being produced "straight out of a backyard garden" or "right off of the family farm". But is it really freshly picked tomatoes right out of Grandma Mae's garden or chicken breast from a local farm? If the food purchased is from Whole Foods or the organic section at Walmart, then that probably is not the case. Large organic farms are what usually supply Whole Foods and other larger chain stores that have organics. They are not what people initially think of when imagining the typical organic farm. They usually think of a small plot of land with an old farmhouse, chicken coops, a red barn, and a large pasture of grass. Even though there are still organic farms like that, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the smaller farms do not need the expensive and large equipment, they have to pay farmhands to take care of everything by hand. Farm hands, on average, make about eleven dollars per hour. For three farm hands that work approximately an eight hour day, cost the farm two hundred and sixty–four dollars a day (Farm Hand). To power harvesting machinery for about an eight hour day, would cost two hundred and eight dollars a day just for diesel costs (Edwards). So, the price to run per day for both large and small organic farms does not have a dramatic difference. Another quite large expense is that of transportation. Products from large farms typically supply large markets and are usually not at small farmers markets. In order for the food to be transported from the farm to the supermarket, they have to use fuel. Not only is this costing them much more, but it is also affecting the environment. On the contrary, small farms typically sell their produce at farmers markets or at their farm itself. This is not only conserving them money, but it is also conserving fossil fuels. Another economic factor in organic farming, in general, is that organic food is typically more expensive that its non–organic counterpart. This observation goes along with both large and small organic farms. When people go shopping, they often look for the cheapest item. Since ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Organic Chemistry Running head: Organic Chemistry Tamanna Ashraf Palm Beach State College Principle of Chemistry Ceravolo, Joseph MW 11:00am–12:15pm February 6th, 2011 We all are living in a science world. Everything has some kind of reaction going on in our living area. It is just we do not get to see or realize that where n how we having our life much easier than it used to be. In these writing assignments, the topic is about the organic chemistry. In organic chemistry, we all have different kinds of compounds. In addition, alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes are the parts of the organic and inorganic compounds. We also can learn about the structural formula they all have in different form. Polymerization is another type of chemical reaction that we get to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Above n=17 they are solids at room temperature. Although alkanes with higher values of n are found in diesel fuel, fuel oil, petroleum jelly, motor oils. The fossil fuel resource from which we obtain the alkanes is much valuable to burn it all as a motor fuel. Alkanes derivatives are used in hundreds of products such as plastics, paints, drugs, cosmetics, detergent, etc. (R, N. n.d.). Alkenes are an unsaturated chemical compound containing at least one carbon–to–carbon double bond. The simple alkenes have only one double bond and no other functional groups. For example, (C=C). The boiling points of each alkene are very similar to that of the alkane with the same number of carbon atoms. In this case, the alkenes have a boiling point which is a small number of degrees lower than the alkane. Each alkene has 2 fewer electrons than the alkane with the same number of carbons. (Clark, J. 2003). Hydrocarbons that contain carbon–carbon triple bonds. The triple bond adds two elements of unsaturation. For example, (CC). They are insoluble in water. In addition, their boiling points show the usual increase with increasing carbon number. The unsaturated nature of alkynes means that most of their reactions will be similar to those of alkenes. The difference between these groups is in the bond types between carbons. Alkanes form only single bonds, alkenes form double bonds, and in alkynes, there is one triple bond. The structural formulas for each of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Internet Shopping : Challenges And Complications In Online... Rather than online reviews, endorsements and recommendations on e–store pages and/or social media play a vital role for online shoppers when researching options for upcoming purchases. It was also observed that 60% of all buying is influenced by online reviews, ratings and social media. Pitfalls in Online Shopping: In spite of the enormous advantages it offers to the shoppers, online shopping has its curbs also. Some of the minuses in online shopping are elaborated below: Security and Fraud Concerns: As the online products cannot be examined before purchase, online shoppers are at greater threat of fraud than in face–to–face transactions especially in Pakistan where FIA has cracked down few online cases. The biggest fear for customers is their payment and identity details can be stolen, letting criminals and hackers' access to their bank accounts, credit cards and other online accounts. Lack of Full Price Disclosure: It is sometimes problematic for the online buyers as they can easily compare the real amount of a product online but can't view the total up–front until placing an order. Additional charges such as shipping and handling fees are mostly not visible until completing the checkout process. This problem is especially present in cross–city purchases where the price showed on the final checkout page may not comprise extra fees but is to be paid upon delivery. • 4. World 's Increasing Demand For Energy Essay World's increasing demand for energy is fulfilled by different sectors (like Oil, Coal, Natural Gas, Hydro, Nuclear and others). Fossil fuels remain the dominant source of energy powering the world economy, supplying 60% of the energy increase out to 2035. Within that, gas looks set to become the fastest growing fossil fuel, spurred on by ample supplies and supportive environmental policies. 1.1 BACKGROUND From the advert of the modern oil and gas industry, petroleum geologists and engineers have followed a conventional route for exploration; look for hydrocarbon source rocks, find reservoir quality rocks where hydrocarbons can accumulate, identify a trapping mechanism and then drill a well. But a revolution is taking place in the exploration and production (E&P) industry. Rocks that in the past were of little interest, other than as potential source rocks, are today being actively pursued as potential reservoirs. When considering unconventional resource plays, the focus is on finding organic shale's. This development represents a fundamental shift in the way exploration companies consider resource plays. Engineers and geologists studying shale gas resources find that reservoir can lead to process adaptation and refinement of techniques. It is important to integrate data from many sources and at many scales to optimally drill, complete and stimulate wells to produce hydrocarbons from their source rocks. The two other type of existing unconventional gas resources are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Organic Vs Non-Organic Foods While we all love food and it's a necessity to live there are now two categories of food. Organic and non–organic, this can be any food from meats to dairy to fruits and so on just about everything today can be put to one side or the other. Through the use of evidence and explanations, the difference between organic and non–organic will be shown in depth providing for a decision to be made between the two. There are many food groups that can be divided between non–organic and organic foods the two that will be discussed today are meats and vegetables or fruits. Organic meats are any animals that aren't fed modified food. This means that animals such as cows, pigs, and even chickens are given food like grass and hay. This in order to be considered organic the animals must be able to live and walk among outdoors(Robinson, Segal 4). The food for the animals is also treated with natural methods to prevent diseases(Robinson, Segal 4). The main reason that people steer away from organic is the price compared to non–organic is more. In fact, the organic meat can cost more than 70% more than non–organic meats(Marks 14). Now let's talk about non–organic meat which has many differences compared to organic. The way organic meat is raised is different because it can be raised outdoors or inside crammed together with thousands of other animals(Robinson, Segal 4). The feeding of non–organic can involve growth hormones which allow the animals to grow faster. Genetically Modified ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Organic Food Is Better Than Conventional Food Organic food is a current topic in today's healthful world. There are different sides to the organic food argument. One is that organic food is much better than conventional food. The other is that conventional food is just as good as organic and more for your dollar. To some families organic food is more then they can afford because of the extra work that is required to grow it. People say that organic food is better because it has no chemicals or fertilizer in it but that is not true because they do put fertilizer on it just "natural" fertilizer that is certified by the USDA. Conventional food which to many people think is not safe because of the chemicals in it but it is just as safe as organic food. Some organic food is not completely chemical free. Certified organic is the most chemical free but not completely. According to the Mayo Clinic if the produce has a USDA organic seal on it then it is 95 to 100 percent organic. "Products that are completely organic – such as fruits, vegetables, eggs or other single–ingredient foods – are labeled 100 percent organic and can carry the USDA seal. Foods that have more than one ingredient, such as breakfast cereal, can use the USDA organic seal plus the following wording, depending on the number of organic ingredients, 100 percent organic. To use this phrase, products must be either completely organic or made of all organic ingredients. Organic. Products must be at least 95 percent organic to use this term" (Are They Safe?). ... • 7. Choosing Organic Food : The Benefits Of Organic Food If you could improve your odds of living longer, would you do it? Simply avoiding certain foods can lead to an increased life span. It boils down to, do you eat any organic food? Choosing to consume organic food is one way to drastically improve your health. At first glance you may be wondering what's the big deal, it's just food after all, and that is where you are wrong. Organic food is the way food is meant to be prepared and eaten, unfortunately due to business tactics, the food industry has gotten out of hand and most of the food available at your local grocery store contains food with dangerous ingredients. There are many benefits to eating mainly organic food some of which include; health benefits, sustainable agriculture and fair animal treatment. WORKING OUTLINE: 1.The health benefits aren't obvious just by looking at an organic chicken vs a "regular" chicken, however if you look at the packaging you can see the immediate differences. It all starts with how the food is prepared. Chickens for example are raised very differently depending on whether they are deemed organic or not. If a chicken is not organic then it is subjected to harsh living environments. They live in tiny metal cages with no room to move, with the only goal of producing eggs and meat. While in these cramped quarters, the chickens don't get to exercise and get stressed, they are not able to stay healthy and disease is born. And since all the chickens live side by side, disease spreads very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Effects Of Pesticides On Organic Farming Humans initially began farming organically when European farmers noticed a decrease in soil quality and crop health due to the use of chemical fertilizers ("Pesticides in Organic..." 1). This drop in soil quality left the farmers no other choice but to cease the use of chemical fertilizers and begin implementing less harmful supplements in order to improve crop quality ("An Oral History..."). This less invasive method of farming, otherwise known as organic farming, takes into account "the medium and long–term effect of agricultural interventions" ("What Are the Environmental...") to strengthen environmental sustainability. Alternatively, industrial farming addresses problems as they arise, whereas organic farming ensures a less destructive way of living by taking preventative measures associated with the environment and health. As more consumers switch to the organic lifestyle, this proactive trend is estimated to grow at an annual rate of 14% until 2018 within the United States (Daniells). The estimated growth rate of the organic food market is significantly higher than the growth rate of the conventional food market (Daniells), thereby making "organic sales account for over 4 percent of total U.S. food sales" (USDA–ERS). According to the USDA, this organic trend has implemented organic products in roughly three out of four conventional grocery stores in the United States ("USDA–ERS"). While conventional farmers are not losing all of their buyers, many consumers have appealed to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Organic Vineyards Vs Non Organic Wine There are many differences between organic vineyards and non–organic vineyards like for example, organic vineyards produce their wine excluding the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides while non–organic vineyards on the other hand do produce their wine applying those products. Every year that passes our generation is becoming more and more advanced in many things, including the usage of organic products. Many things sold at groceries stores are now available organically, like fruits and other types of nourishments and soon many things will be made organically. The pros and cons of non–organic and organic vineyards both have good arguments that can really change the opinions of many people but if you had to chose between one or the other, which one would you pick? Whenever something is organic, everyone believes that its healthy but not all organic things are as healthy as they seem to always be portrayed. Some cons organic wine has is that organic wine does not contain sulfite, which people claim reduces its shelf life and in some cases changes its flavors ("Clearing up the Confusion about Organic Wine"). Organic wine also brings a much more healthier option to the table and it has also become more popular in recent years throughout the Napa Valley. A pro is that organic wine doesn't contain artificial chemical fertilizers which could possibly cause some sort of long term effect. You never know what artificial chemical fertilizers ... • 10. Enzyme Catalase Lab Report Introduction: A catalyst speeds up a reaction by lowering the activation energy that is used to start it. There are both organic and inorganic catalysts–one being an enzyme. An enzyme is an organic catalyst that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed by the reaction. Enzymes are proteins, meaning that they have a unique structure that dictates what their function is. This unique structure also determines what substrate, or specific reactant, the enzyme will catalyze. From there, the substrate and enzyme bind together; which leads to the reactants being created. The enzyme tested during this experiment was the enzyme catalase. This is an enzyme that is found in both plant and animal cells, and is found in large ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As shown in figure 1: tube 1, the control group (with a plastic bead as the catalyst), did not have any reaction. Tube 2 (containing the manganese dioxide as a catalyst), however, did have a reaction– its rate was a 1 out of 4. Tubes 3 (with potato as the catalyst) and 4 (with liver as the catalyst) both had bigger reactions, with tube 4 being the highest rating. Tube 3 was rated a 2 out of 4, and tube 4, with the biggest reaction, was rated a 4 out of 4. As exhibited in figure 2, tube 1 (with room temperature liver as the catalyst) was the biggest reaction with a rate of 4 out of 4. Tube 2 (containing heated liver as the catalyst) did not have any reaction, leading it to have a 0 out of 4 rating. The 3rd tube, containing cooled liver as the catalyst, was the second biggest reaction with a rating of 3 out of 4. The last 2 tubes, 4 (with heated manganese dioxide as the catalyst) and 5 (containing cooled manganese dioxide as the catalyst), had very small reactions and were both rated 1 out of 4. Discussion/Conclusion From this lab, I have discovered a lot of important information regarding enzymes and enzyme function. For instance, during part 1 of the lab, I found out that manganese dioxide is not as effective at catalyzing reactions than catalase is. This leads me to believe that enzymes as a whole are sometimes more effective than non–organic catalysts. While the manganese dioxide created 2 cm worth of bubbles, the ... • 11. Organic Farming Produces Organic Food Eat it if you can Pronounce It The word Organic can be defined in multiple ways but what the word basically means that the product is derived from living matter. Organic farming produces organic food. The goal is to encourage soil and water conservation, reduce pollution, and constrain conventional methods to fertilize and control weeds. According to the U.S Food and Drug Administration "The term "organic" is not defined by law or regulations FDA enforces." Foods that are organic does not necessarily mean that they are healthy. There are organically refined unhealthy foods such as wholesome branded cane sugar and Applegate branded pork sausages products that are labeled as organic but is obviously not the healthiest choice. Labeling a food product as organic does not make consumption completely healthy for infants. • 12. Gmos Vs Organic Foods Is organic agriculture really worth the extra cost? GMOs are the most efficient farming method due to a decrease in input costs, which saves the farmers more money. Organic foods cost more, but do they really offer more nutritional value? The answer is no, GMOs have nearly the same nutritional value as organic, and cost less. Meaning that the use of GMOs are way more efficient than the use of organic. Some agronomists say that genetic modification can actually decrease crop yields. A new study shows that a change in Technology is needed to solve the world's food crisis. The study carried out over the past three years at the University of Kansas has found that GM soy products produce 10 per cent less food than conventional. Plant breeders use a mix of traditional and modern methods to improve plants. Modern methods include marker assisted breeding, which allows breeders to use a blueprint of the genome to select seeds with the most desirable traits. Marker assisted breeding helps speed up the time it takes to do traditional breeding.GM traits help to increase yields by protecting the crop that would be lost due to insects or weeds. If weeds and insects are controlled well, then the insect and herbicide tolerance traits will not be the only factor in increased yield. For example statistics stated by PG Economics, taken by data from numerous studies around the world. Organic food benefits health far more than genetically modified food that contains pesticides and animals that are raised on antibiotics growth hormones. Non–GMO foods are also safer for the environment in many ways: it conserves water, reduces soil erosion, increases soil fertility, reduces pollution, uses less energy, and does not affect the animals that live close to farms or graze on the farm like birds and chickens (Robinson). Yet GMO's are beneficial society as food is produced in abundance and due to herbicides plant epidemics are not as common as they use to be. • 17. Organic Food Vs. Commercial Food Essay Organic Food VS. Commercial Food Food is a necessary ingredient in the soup of survival. As society advances it becomes an increasingly simple process to acquire any type of food––regardless of its country of origin or whichever season it happens to be––as long as you can pay for it. As a result of such ease in selecting meals, you have the choice of eating whatever you want. The problem with this ability is that people do not always choose the food that is the healthiest for them or that is produced in the healthiest ways. Over the past few decades, it has become a general consensus that organic food is simply better than non–organic food, however not many people truly understand what "better" entails. Proper "healthy" food should taste good, provide a sufficient amount of nutrients, and should be grown in a manner that avoids harmful chemicals and other additives or supplements that alter the food itself. Organic food best met this criteria by tasting fresher, providing more than enough nutrients, and being grown in a manner that forgoes synthetic pesticides and other harmful additives which can lead to nausea, hormonal imbalances, and eventually even cancer. . What most people don 't realize is that organic food is nothing new. Prior to World War I all crops were organic. It was not until after both World Wars synthetic pesticides were created as an outlet for the toxic chemical aftermath of both mustard gas and nerve poison ("Synthetic Pesticides"). By rotating crops, studies have shown that it can increase the yield, lower the cost of crop production, and decrease the amount of additives needed to make a strong crop. Rotation has also been known to benefit physical properties of the soil like tilts, and bulk density, and also contribute to efficient use of plant nutrients found in soil. The organic practice of using cover crops, also known as green manure, is done to feed and provide micro flora and fauna in the soil with nutrients. Cover cropping prevents the growth of problematic bacteria, diseases, and insects by supplying beneficial organisms the foundation they need to thrive in the soil. For centuries farmers have used green manure, but in recent times it has been replaced by the use of herbicides and fertilizers. This practice has multiple benefits for the soil including soil tilth, water infiltration, and reduction of sealing. It provides erosion control, adds to the fertility of 5 the soil, suppresses the growth of weeds, and encourages the growth of beneficial insects. There are two main types of green manure, legumes and non–legumes. Legumes benefit the soil by adding much needed Nitrogen, it does this by fixing atmospheric Nitrogen into a form plants can use. For some people, this may be an easy question depending on how much you want to spend, or if you choose organic products regardless of the price. However, no matter what an individual chooses, we will always be skeptical of the quality difference in grocery produce. Is organic milk that much different? Is it healthier than the conventional milk in the isle? Will it protect you from pathogens? These questions are foreign to the grab and go set of individuals, however King Corn, a documentary based on the overproduction of corn, gives readers an insight on how chemicals and GMOs in our food supply are affecting people all over the country. While there are positive aspects of producing and consuming conventional food, we should carefully investigate what is in our food system and how we can identify the differences between certified organic and conventional. When purchasing organic produce, one might notice that there are noticeable physical differences between organic and non–organic produce. For example, when looking to purchase a banana, most of the organic ones come in various shapes and sizes whereas the non–organic ones look relatively the same. One such issue claims that eating organic food is much better than buying and eating the non – organic food (D. Mosbergen July 2014). Certain studies point to the fact that the organic food that is available in almost every market is the best healthy option available whereas others say that it is no good but a tactical business strategy for increasing the sales of products labelled as "Organic". While surfing through the internet and also while reading newspapers, one can see the influence these USDA approved label food item have on the general public. It has been in the controversy for a long time about labelling a certain food item as organic. But, what really is organic. Some people are misinformed about the organic food being the food that is resistant in a certain protein (for example, Gluten – free) or some other component of food (For example, B – fatty acids, low – fat). But as per the USDA guidelines, foods are "organic" if they "integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity" (Wikipedia). Critics of the certification system argue that it's easy to flout the rules either blatantly or by creatively interpreting the rules and the regulations. An example of this occurred in 2004 when Bayliss ranch, a food ingredient producer, based in California tried to use the fact that because the tap water that they were using in their products had been certified organic, they could legally use the label "organic" on their products. These critics also argue that the certification process provides a podium by which special interest groups and lobbyists can press for amendments and exceptions to established rules and regulations favorable to large scale operators meaning that conventionally produced ... • 35. Organic Chemistry : Organic Vs. Inorganic Chemistry I selected organic chemistry because honestly it looks like a very interesting topic. Before doing research on this topic the knowledge I had before about organic chemistry was that it has something to do with food. After doing research I found out that I was way off track. I learned that in the late 1820's was when organic chemistry was stumbled upon. In 1828 Friedrich Wohler produce the organic chemical rued, a mixture of urine from inorganic starting Materials. This is now called the Wohler Synthesis. This was the first time a substance thought to be organic was made in the laboratory without any biological starting material. In the late 1850s organic chemistry was stumbled upon again. In 1856 William Henry Perkin accidentally produced an organic dye known as Perkin while he was trying to manufacture quinine. As you can see organic chemistry was kind of just stumbled upon. Well I've came to that conclusion in my research. This paper was so organic chemistry and how are use it today, how we've used it in the past, and how we are working to develop it. While reading an article called Organic VS Inorganic Chemistry I learned of a lot of interesting things. This article talks about how some carbon molecules are not considered organic, with carbon dioxide being the most well known and most inorganic carbon compound. Those such molecules are the exception and not the rule. The article also talks about how organic chemistry focuses on carbon in following the movement of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Essay On Gmo Labeling When talking about GMO foods and labeling, I think that people first off need to understand what a GMO actually is. A GMO is a Genetically Modified Organism. A GMO is an organism that has had its DNA altered. GMOs give farmers the potential to increases their crop production and their profitability by planting GMO seed. Many agriculture crops that use mostly GMOs now are corn, soy, sugar beets, dairy, yellow squash, cotton and zucchini. Farmers use GMOs to protect their crops from insects, pesticides and various weather conditions. People often wonder if GMO food is safe to consume. It isn't right for people to say that GM seeds are harmful because there is no nutritional characteristics that differ from GM foods vs Non–GM foods. There are obviously two different sides. There are people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Companies that are for organic, Non–GM foods like to put huge food labels on their products to draw people in. It also makes them think that they have some nutritional value to offer that GM foods don't offer. I think if people knew the approval process that GM seeds have to undergo by the FDA, USDA and EPA then they would realize that GM foods aren't harmful. All of these administrations conduct mandatory reviews to make sure GM seeds are safe to grow, good for the environment and good to consume. I think if the food label says Non–GMO or organic then people automatically assume that it is healthier. Many companies will make their labels huge so that people do not notice the important stuff; they just see that it says organic so it has to be the best, right? If all of these researches show that there really is no difference in GMO vs Non–GMO other than how the crop is grown, I do not understand why people are still buying Non–GMO foods since their more expensive. I am a firm believer that people need to know where their food is coming from and have a right to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Agriculture : A Global Environmental And Humanitarian Issue Agriculture uses the domestication and cultivation of animals, plants, fungi and other life forms to produce food, fiber, biofuel, medicinal and other products to help sustain and enhance human life. Agriculture has existed for over the last 10,000 years and is credited into propelling our civilization into the modern cultures and technologies we see today. Without the ability to store and domesticate plants and animals it is unlikely that we would have been able to evolve beyond our hunting and gathering ancestors, advancing in both the arts and sciences. Modern agricultural though has developed into a global environmental and humanitarian issue. With the ever growing human population, our ability to sustain arable land is posing a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the population continues to grow, so will our methods of production. Helping to save the planet is the ultimate goal, but in order to do so we will first need to save ourselves. Thomas Malthus was one of the first scientists to investigate the principles of population growth and the concept of carrying capacity. Malthus came to realize that the growth of a population relied upon, and was directly related to the amount of available resources needed to survive. Malthus acknowledged that if a population became too large, surpassing its carrying capacity, it would eventually be checked by what is known as a Malthusian catastrophe (i.e. famine and disease). We can induce this concept when observing a culture of bacteria, or more simply a pasture of farming sheep, first observed as the tragedy of the commons. Today we are already seeing symptoms of overpopulation, as a significant number of our population dies every day because of malnutrition, starvation and disease. So have we already surpassed our carrying capacity? Or are these issues of food security merely a result of affluent nations tipping the scale in their favor? Many people say that we have enough food to feed the current world population, so the issue then becomes how this food is distributed. When considering the amount of food that gets thrown away each year and the rising obesity rates in the United States, it's hard to argue. Aldo ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Birth Defects And Its Effects On Society Sean Moren Mrs. Bumgarner English I Honors 5 May 2017 Studies have been completed, showing that 10% of birth defects are caused by chemicals in industrial products.("Birth Defects and Environmental Causes." ) The chemicals in industrial products come from many things, however, food is one of the largest contributors to birth defects. Therefore, it is important that consumers understand how the industry 's use of chemicals can affect one's, health through their use of packing, synthetic chemicals, and the alternatives to chemical filled foods. Eating 50 grams or more of processed meats every day increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%. That is equivalent to about 4 strips of bacon of 1 hot dog. Red meat also increases the risk of colorectal, pancreatic, and prostate cancer.(Simon)The lifetime risk of developing colon cancer is 5%. By eating processed meat, the risk of developing colon cancer would rise to 6%. Which is substantially larger than the normal 5%. • 39. Animal Agriculture Vs Animal-Based Diets Essay On a scale of 1 to 5 I would give myself a 4 in the minimizing food waste category because I never have leftovers when I eat a meal. I've been taught since I was born that I couldn't get up from the table if I hadn't finished my food. If I just could not finish it then I would take it home and eat it at another time. Also, when my family and I go to the grocery store we use reusable grocery bags, so we don't have to take home the plastic or paper bags. We actually haven't been going to the grocery store very often, we go to the farmers market. So, all of our nuts, fruits, vegetables, and many other things haven't been packages at all and we use our reusable bags there too. One of their arguments was that animal agriculture is responsible for things that impact the environment through air pollution. They mentioned that animal agriculture is responsible for more than 18 percent of greenhouse has emissions, thats more than the combines exhaust from all transportation. To also back up their argument they mentioned that livestock and their byproducts accounts for at least 32,000 millions tons of carbon dioxide per year, or 51 percent of all worldwide greenhouse gas remission. All of the carbon dioxide also adds to the air pollution. Another argument they presented was that animal agriculture takes up a lot of our water. To help their argument they states that fracking water use ranges from 70–140 billion gallons annually and animal agriculture water consumption ranges from 34–76 trillion gallons annually. A lot of this water is used to grow feed crop. Growing feed crops for livestock consumes 56 percent of water in the US. • 40. Vegetarian Vs. Meat Eater Vegetarian VS. Meat Eater There are two main lifestyles that we as human beings practice that impact our eating habits. One being a Vegetarian, a person who chooses not to eat meat. The other being a Meat Eater (also known as an Omnivore), a person who chooses to eat both meat and vegetables. A controversial debate continues to go on, evaluating the pros and cons of each group, along with the reasons behind their choice. In the end it all depends on the individual's outlook on life that makes the decision. Some individuals may have chosen to be Vegetarian for health purposes, or out of respect for animals. The health benefits of not eating meat may reduce the risk of a Heart Attack, Cancer, and Type 2 Diabetes. Meat contains saturated fat. Consuming excessive amounts of meat may cause clogged arteries. Clogged arteries force your heart to beat faster, in order to pump blood through the arteries, resulting in high blood pressure. Compounds broken down in meat produce fatty build up causing clogged arteries, and in some cases resulting in a heart attack. Preservatives, such as nitrate, are used to prevent bacteria in processed meat, and are known to cause cancer. Red meat is high in iron and may diminish insulin's effectiveness of converting sugar into energy causing diabetes. Some may believe, that vegetarians are more likely to be anemic due to the lack of meat in their diet. • 41. The Basic Economics of Organic versus Non-Organic Foods Personally, I am fortunate to live in an area that has a fairly wide array of organic foods. There is a healthy mix of large supermarkets and small, independent grocers that sell organic foods. Using the Mayo Clinic as a reference, I have developed the following opinion on organic foods that takes into account the financial aspects as well as the health ramifications of eating or not eating organic foods. The basic economics of Organic versus Non–Organic foods are as follows: Non–Organic These foods are grown using fertilizers, herbicides and pesticide use, and may or may not be a genetically altered plant that grows at a rate many times that of a regular plant. The potato is one such example. Because of the fast growing rates and high crop yield due to the use of pesticides and other unnatural components, this allows the firm to sell the plant at low costs to maximize on their marginal cost (the benefit of producing or selling one more unit of output). If a firm in a completely fair competitive market desires to make money, they will sell more units at a lower cost, so long as the number of units doesn't incur a negative marginal cost. Organic No additives, no preservatives; nothing is added to these products that is not naturally present in their growing process. This is what makes organic so expensive. Without the aid of GMO's, herbicides, pesticides and preservatives added later, these food products have lower yield rates, lower shelf life, longer growth rate, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Organic Vs Non Organic Vineyards Organic vs Non Organic Vineyards There's many differences between organic vineyards and non–organic vineyards. Organic vineyards, for instance, produce their wine by excluding the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. Non–organic vineyards on the other hand, produce their wine by applying these products. Every year that goes by, our generation is becoming more advanced in the usage of organic products. Many things sold in groceries stores are now available organically, for instance fruits and other types of nourishments. The positives and negatives of non–organic and organic vineyards both have good arguments but in my opinion organic vineyards tend to have more of a positive effect in our society. Whenever something is organic, everyone believes that it's healthy, but that is not the case, not all organic things are as healthy as they are portrayed to be. Some negatives of organic wine are that organic wine does not contain sulfite, which people claim it reduces its shelf life and in some cases changes its flavors ("Clearing up the Confusion about Organic Wine"). Organic wine also brings a much healthier option to the table; in recent years it has become more popular throughout the Napa Valley. A positive note about organic wine is that organic wine doesn't contain artificial chemical fertilizers which could possibly cause some long term side effects to the human body. One never knows what artificial chemical fertilizers consist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
