2. Introduction
• Since 1999, Le Petit Papillon Montessori School in Miami Beach has encouraged
children to develop independence and self-regulation as they interact with the
world. Certified by Early Development of Global Education (EDGE) and a recipient
of the 2011 Best of Miami Beach Award, Le Petit Papillon Montessori School is
committed to caring for the planet through focused “green” efforts and policies.
In order to reduce waste, the school communicates electronically whenever
possible. Teachers also incorporate into daily classroom routines simple habits
such as turning off lights when they are not being used, as well as recycling
classroom waste.
Each classroom includes numerous plants, offering students the opportunity to
care for and observe living things. In addition, each class maintains an outdoor
garden that allows the children to see the connection between food and the earth,
and the entire school collaborates in the maintenance of a greenhouse.
To complement the environmentally conscious curriculum, students participate in
community programs such as the Reclamation Project, which lets students plant
red mangrove seedlings as part of art installations.
