Globalization is defined in the textbook as, "a process of increasing interconnectedness between
societies such that events in one part of the world increasingly have effects on peoples and
societies far away" (Baylis 9). Societies, as a whole, are affected more extensively by events that
take place in other societies. Something that happens in one area of the world can affect people in
many different areas around the world. This is a key indicator that globalization is not simply a
myth. In the introduction to the textbook, eight main arguments are presented in regards to
globalization being a real phenomenon. Some of the most important include; the world economy is
more interdependent now than ever; communication have revolutionized ways we deal with the rest
of the world; there is now, more than ever, a global culture, so that most urban areas resemble one
another maybe even sharing a common culture; and lastly, people are realizing that major risks are
global and cannot be dealt with by their state alone (Baylis 9). Because people are naturally curious
about other parts of the world, curing that curiosity leads to globalization. Globalization leads to
more cultural intermingling and each country has become more open and accepting towards each

Many historians and sociologists have identified a transformation in the economic processes of the
world and society in recent times. There has been an extensive increase in developments in
technology and the economy as a whole in the twentieth century. Globalization has been recognized
as a new age in which the world has developed into what Giddens identifies to be a "single social
system" (Anthony Giddens: 1993 'Sociology' pg 528), due to the rise of interdependence of various
countries on one another, therefore affecting practically everyone within society.

argued that globalisation creates an environment which consists of greed,
