Examples of Discrimination
1.
2. The 1972 Munich Summer Olympic games
incident sparked President Richard Nixon to
implement Operation Boulder, which racially
screened and profiled people and separated
them from society. "Numerous Arab students
and Arab American activists were kept under
surveillance, their phones tapped, their mail
intercepted, and their speeches and
writings monitored" during this time
period. The discrimination and unfair
treatment given to this particular group was
government sponsored, and therefore could no
be spoken out against in fear of being Anti-
American. During this time period, 78 Arab
nationalists were deported and it was also
legally concluded that the FBI had violated the
constitutional rights of the people. This
discrimination and unequal treatment by the
United States government reveals that even
though the government may believe it is doing
what is necessary and right, that it is still guilty
of discrimination. Additionally, the lives of the
Arab people during this time period were
extremely altered because they were afraid of
being accused of something by the government.

3. U.S. supports Israeli military in Arab-Israeli
conflict and after Yom-Kippur War
After America expressed its support for Israel,
the country experiences an oil boycott by Syria
and Egypt, resulting in shortages of gas and rising
prices. Because of this, there was a
subsequent emergence of an Arab oil Sheikh in
movies who as a character was "buying up
America". This image created by Hollywood
altered society's opinions and created a
stereotype of Arabs.(Arab Americans in the 21st
Century)
4. During the 1980's the Arab-American population began to feel more
severe racism and violent threats from the growing and developing
stereotypes. Throughout this decade there was a pattern that
developed where an event would happen between the United
States and an Arab country which would then insinuate
violence. For example, after there was a series of terrorist
attacks, there was a firebombing of a pro-Palestinian human rights
organization and the murder of a leader of the American-Arab
Anti-Discrimination committee. Once again this pattern of
discrimination developing into violence occurred when, after the
US bombed Libya and shot down a plane, Arabs were beaten up in
Chicago, Syracuse, and New Haven. (Arab Americans in the 21st
Century)

5. One of the most shocking
occurrences of this racism was when
the department of justice developed
a plan for the possible mass
internment of Middle East
nationalists in the case of a national
emergency. Through this plan there
were detention camps set up in
Louisiana and Florida. In all of these
instances, the anti-Arab sentiment
was affecting the lives and culture of
every American citizen; if someone
was not the instigator or victim of a
hate crime, they were witnesses of
this injustice. (Arab Americans in the
21st Century)

7. By 2007, 510 arrests had been made, and only 4 people
were actually convicted of planning attacks on the United
States. (Arab Americans in the 21st Century)
"The tragic events of 9/11, followed by the U.S.-led wars
in Iraq and Afghanistan and the global War on Terror
against Muslim extremists, inevitable fostered negative
public attitudes toward Arab American, Arabs, and
Muslims. Ten years after, some of that negative attitude
continue to prevail. (Arab Americans in the 21st Century).
