Researchers at the University of California found that obese women and those with type 2 diabetes have an increased chance of having a child with autism or other mental and/or physical disabilities. They discovered that high glucose levels in these mothers affect brain development in the fetus. The researchers looked at 1,000 children and mothers in California and found that 9.3% of children whose mothers had diabetes during pregnancy were born with autism, and another 11% showed signs of other disabilities. Over 20% of children with autism or other disabilities had obese mothers.
