Racism is very much still active and thriving in all parts of United States. While, it may not be as
upfront and life threatening as it was back in the early 1900's it is surprisingly still an issue we face
on a day to day basis. Racism is always an extremely sensitive subject when discussed around a
diverse group of individuals but does it have to be? Most white Americans tend to believe racism is a
thing of the past and tend to downplay non–white Americans point of views when they speak of racial
discrimination. Americans pride themselves by saying they only see one color "the human race" but

does it say if you are not lynching or openly speaking negative about blacks you are not a racist. In

nation. Beginning with slave trade and continuing with the protests today, this country has never
known a life without race issues. Citizens argue that racism would not exist and would not be a
problem if we ceased to converse about it. The other stance believes it is impossible to reach

they are judged by the color of their skin and not given the opportunity to prove their likeness or
unlikeness to a race stereotype. After terrorist attacks by Muslims, many innocent Muslim
Americans were regarded with great scepticism when boarding airline flights. African American
males have often claimed to have been the target of social profiling and they argue that they are not
given a chance to show their goodness by onlookers who assume the worst. The media seems to feed
this frenzy by posting controversial stories to sensationalize the true details.

In Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech, "I have a Dream..." he focused on racial injustice and the
importance of doing away with it in our country. Martin Luther King Jr. pointed out that even after
one hundred years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, the black man had

It has come to my attention that the rampant rage of racism still persists within the world we live
in today. Black mothers are still grieving for their sons, bleeding in the streets from the bullet of a
cop, young black girls are being suspended from their schools due to the nature of their hair, and

people still use the 'n' word in every other sentence, yet beg to say they aren't racist. Seeing as the

It was during the first week of INT that I started to feel more in depth with the racism and its
different terms. We talked in detail on intent, reverse racism, and white supremacy after watching

So why is it called reverse racism and not simply as racism? I've always believed that there can be
equal racism on both sides before reading the "Reverse Racism Myths" online. The article turned my
beliefs upside down with just the two words, individual vs. institution. In fact, the word racism
comes from the situation when one dominant race puts on oppression and benefits off that
oppression in the other race. Some people might argue that affirmative action discriminates the
white people, and it is thus an example of reverse racism. This is not the case because the goal of

For years, students complained, saying University of Maryland officials needed to do more to
prevent or respond to racist incidents on campus.
Then Richard Collins III was stabbed to death at a campus bus stop.The death of the young black
Army lieutenant –– just three days before his graduation –– spurred renewed tensions at UMD and
prompted officials to roll out a series of new anti–hate initiatives.
"As we grieve the loss of Lt. Richard Collins III of Bowie State University, we must also act to
combat hate and create a safer campus," UMD President Wallace D. Loh said in a statement
Wednesday.
But even before Collins' death, the university has been grappling with a series of racially charged
incidents.
Racist flyers, slurs and a noose
Tamara Adams vividly remembers the day she saw the white nationalist flyers posted on campus:
"America is a white nation," it read.
"I questioned whether or not I (as an African–American) was welcome on the University of Maryland
campus," the senior said.
Those posters went up in March. The next month, someone left a noose in the kitchen of UMD's Phi
Kappa Tau fraternity house.
UMD police called the incident a "hateful act" and launched a "hate/bias investigation."
Student Alexis Ojeda–Brown refused to stay silent. Earlier this month, she used a bullhorn to
denounce the noose incident on an open area of campus –– only to have students respond by saying,
"Who cares?"
