1. How and why is it important to consider convergence when planning for the future in the media
industry?
It is important to consider convergence in the media industry as it gives the audience a choice and is
convienient for them. For example, 50 years ago you would have to go the cinema to watch a film at
a specific time. However, now, you are able to watch it through a number of different media devices.
For example, you can use your computer to watch film and TV at any given time due to streaming
and downloading. Although this offers many advantages to the audience, it does create challenges
and consequences to the film industry such as internet piracy. Internet piracy allows the audience to
download and watch films for free making the film industry lose profits and funding as no companies
will want to invest in a film that will not gain them money.
The ability to watch films online has been convienient to me in the past. Even though I like going to
the cinema, the overall cost is too expensive. The bus fair, cinema ticket and something to eat can
easily cost between £20 and £25. However if I was to watch a film at home, I can choose the time
and place, I am able to pause it, there are no travel costs and no food costs.
