UK FILM CONSUMPTION
ANALYSIS
2. WHICH AUDIENCE GROUPS ARE THE
MOST LUCRATIVE?
After researching into the BFI statistics, I’ve managed to gather information based upon the UK film consumption,
and from this I’ve found out that the most lucrative audiences range from between 15-24 years old, who are more
influenced and assuaged to watch films than any other age range in the statistic shown, showing that young
people would find it more pleasurable and enjoyable within their lifestyles. This age range is expected to gather
most profits from box offices, as they lives styles consist of regularly attending colleges and owning a small time
job, meaning that they will have disposal income to spend on entertain for them.
Both genders, male and females will watch films, as a wide range of genders of this age group will typically go to
the cinema or watch through their smart devices that interests them, this is dependent of the type of film, however
numbers are increased when it is gender orientated
I find how it ties within their lifestyle with the easily accessibility and it being less time consuming, adding to the
advantages of making it easier for young people to gain a hold of.
I find that promoting throughout social media feeds may be the main cause of this age groups popularity, as young
people can easily access and view promotions of films, enticing them to see it, whereas adults may not have had
much access, meaning that they cannot view as much promotional adverts as young people would.
Additionally this can explain the growth in film consumption throughout the years, as technology improves, it
exposes more people, particularly the young to be influenced to watch films.
Audiences statics also from the BFI also show me that typically a majority of audiences are British with a small
population being from ethnic origin, showing that the young people are of white British background and enjoy
watching films that they can mostly identify with as it conventionally conforms to within their lifestyles.
3. WHAT STRATEGIES SHOULD BE USED
TO PROMOTE FILMS?
Promoting through the use of social media is a rather effective way of introducing films to people, especially how it
automatically ties it in with each audiences interest so that they would be more inclined to do so, with the most
lucrative audiences being young people this would tie in really well, especially how social media is inflicted within
their lives on a daily basis, using this as a form to promote films will be beneficial as it exposes yourself straight
towards your target audience immediately.
Promoting through the internet I think has helped raise the growth of film consumption, as it exposes more people
to information through social norms that they use in their lives daily, it also promotes films based upon the users
lifestyle so it can cleverly offer what they think each audience member would like.
According to the BFI, television is also an effective way of promoting films, this can be due to television being
inflicted upon ones lives on a regular basis, and roughly every house hole would expect to own 2-3 TVs,
promoting through TV can be effective as trailers can be offered visually to the audiences which can prompt their
decision to go watch the film, with the majority audience being young people this would tie in within their interest
as they’re more visual learners and have that advantage of deciding for them selves whether or not they should
watch the film.
Another form of effective marketing would be the cinemas, as our most lucrative audience would be young
people, they would be more incline to go to the cinemas for pleasure and entertainment purposes, with disposal
income at their dispense they can pretty much spend what they like when out with friends or family.
Promoting through cinemas is effective as films are show cased on larger screens in clear HD quality, making the
film to be even better for audiences, assuaging them to watch the film when it comes out.
4. THE IMPORTANCE OF TECHNOLOGY
NOW AND IN THE FUTURE
In present times now, technology has vastly increased in power and has been very influential towards people
today, especially to young people who are more exposed to it than older people are.
Technology holds a great use of informing, entertaining and educating audiences, something of which most
people are very reliant upon today and use daily in their lives.
With vast technology improving everyday, I find that we will be exposed to even greater ways of technology in the
foreseeable future, exposing an influential race to be fed to people.
I find that online exhibition will be more common and regularly used in the future as it caters towards a new
generations of internet users, and with people online everyday this can expose them to more things, sites such as
Netflix and Putlocker can offer films at a vast and cost effective rate, without the audience having to leave their
front doors, making it more effective and less time consuming, this form of exhibition providing online viewing at
home is effective and doesn't interfere with audiences busy lifestyles, making it seem more efficient.
I also find that new technology has helped increase the growth consumption of films over the years, with options
such as watching the film in 3D and 4D quality being made available to audiences, offering them a more fun and
insightful way of watching a movie at the cinema, something of which that many audiences cannot achieve at
home, is rather effective as it’s a unique way of exhibiting a movie that people are not use to, making it seem
different and rather innovating.
