Madness In The City Of Chicago
When you think of the city of Chicago you might think of the beautiful downtown skyline and
scenery. You may also think of the giant bean or the 3rd tallest building the Willis tower. As many
people walk the streets filled with fancy stores and five star hotels do people think about the city of
Chicago as a whole really.
When looking at the inner city of Chicago it has been deemed a war zone. When you are looking
from the outside in all you can think of is all the killings and crimes occurring. You can only think
what can be a solution to this madness, but is there really any solution. Around the age of seven I
can remember the city as being fun and lively. Walking to the park with no worries and setting up
the basketball hoop on the curb

Al Capone Research Paper
In 1923, Capone and Torrio had to move their operations to the suburb of Chicago, Cicero. They
were forced to move their operations because of the election of William E. Denver, who was
determined to end the corruption in Chicago. This was not the end of Torrio and Capone's political
problems. Although, unlike in Chicago, Capone and Torrio did not let the mayoral election in Cicero
push them out of the suburb. They ensured their candidates would be elected on March 31,1924, by
causing some voters to be shot and killed (history.com, Al Capone). In 1925, Torrio escaped the
mobster business after rival gangs tried to kill him. This left Capone as the leader of the entire
operation. After Torrio left, Capone came into the spotlight. He did not stay out of the public eye,
and he moved his headquarters in to the Metropole Hotel in downtown Chicago. Capone spent an
enormous amount of money, and his business was booming, with an estimation of generating $100
million annually. The press constantly followed Capone, and some of the public saw him as a hero
working against the prohibition.(history.com, Al Capone). Although, the picture of Capone as a hero
did not last forever, because the public learned his operations were connected with violence. ...

One example of this is in 1926, when Capone ordered his men to kill two enemies seen in Cicero.
The public became angered by the violence in Chicago, and the police responded to the outcry by
raiding Capone's headquarters. The documents they found would eventually lead to the downfall of
Capone. Capone realized the public's unrest was a serious problem, so he called for a "Peace
Conference" with all of the gangsters in Chicago. This conference did not solve any problems,
because violence arose again two months later. (history.com, Al

Chicago Residents Are Unable For A Spot Essay
Chicago residents are unable to do so. In 2014, when CHA reopened its waiting lists, almost a full
quarter of the city's population applied for a spot (Newman 2014). By 2013, the number of renters in
Chicago that were rent burdened increased to 51% (Capperis, Ellen and Kaufman 2015, 14). The
end of 2015 found 124,357 people on the CHA wait list (CHA 2015). It is against the backdrop of
increasing poverty, higher rent burdens and a lack of affordable housing in the city that criticism has
been launched at CHA for failing to release the total amount of vouchers they received from the
federal government as well as failing to meet their stated goal of 25,000 units, but also for leaving a
percentage of units "offline". By offline they mean that those units are not available to rent usually
for maintenance reasons or because the unit is pending redevelopment. By the second quarter of
FY2015, CHA still had 2,823 offline units (CHA 2016, 20).
Since the CHA received a Moving to Work (MTW) grant from HUD, they are exempt from many of
the typical reporting requirements mandated by HUD. This leaves CHA with an enormous amount
of flexibility in using funds and moving funds around. This lack of accountability has been a
common community complaint. As one local newspaper said, "As the city looks elsewhere, the
Chicago Housing Authority has been quietly and steadily perpetrating some of the most disturbing
institutional mismanagement in a city where jaw–dropping corruption is a spectator

The First Years Of My Life
For the first fifteen years of my life, I never referred to myself as a firm believer in love at first
sight. People often tossed around the word love like it was nothing, but I knew that I had never truly
been in love before. This all changed about a month before my sixteenth birthday when I fell in love
with the windy city. In May of 2015, the band took a four–day trip to Chicago. I was thrilled for the
excursion because I had only traveled outside of Kansas a few times. Those vacations were to the
beach, which is nothing like the bustling metropolis of Chicago. I had never truly experienced the
city life before, so I was beyond ready for this new adventure. When I arrived to Chicago, I
expected to see sights that were familiar to me, like in Kansas City. Hundreds of people traveling in
different directions, towering skyscrapers, and shops were all around the city. When we were just a
few miles outside from Chicago, I could see the whole skyline in the distance. I was completely
fascinated by the hundreds of skyscrapers that lined the city, and the sunrise that turned the sky
different shades of orange, yellow, and pink. The views that I encountered while first entering
Chicago were breathtaking. Throughout the whole trip, I experienced multiple new sights, smells,
and sounds. As the trip came to an end, I realized that I had developed a true love for the natural and
urban beauty of Chicago, and that I eventually want to call this place home in a few years.

How Did Al Capone Violate Prohibition
"I violate the prohibition law––sure, who doesn't?" Al Capone admitted to a reporter for the world to
hear. But not everyone who violated prohibition was quite like Al Capone, a gangster who built his
massive empire upon bootlegging, and gambling in Chicago. Bringing in close to 95 million dollars
a year, Al Capone was notorious for being public enemy number one.
Most gangsters were born into impoverished backgrounds, but this was not the case for Capone. He
was in fact from a respectable and law–abiding family of Italians who moved to New York in 1894.
Born January 17, 1899 in Brooklyn, Alphonse Capone was the fourth of nine children. However,
Young Al's home was far from extravagant. He lived in a slum, close to a bad area of the city. His ...

He and along with a long time friend, Frank Yale, from New York, began smuggling car loads of
whiskey into Chicago. This whiskey bootlegging trail was making Capone rich, but an incident
involving William McSwiggins was a huge setback. In such free–for–all business, every man
wanted the bigger share of profits. This escalated to the point where gangsters wouldn't settle their
discussions but reached for the revolver instead. The crime leader of Chicago, Al Capone was very
much the same. Men would be unsuspectingly pulled into a car and "taken for a ride". Dozens of
men met their ends in such methods. The regular everyday citizens of Cicero shook off these
instances simply because it didn't effect them. Until the night of May 1926, when someone was
caught between the crossfire. Three men were shot down that night, two of which were gangsters
and the third was William McSwiggins. McSwiggin was accidently shot by Capone's men in a
shootout outside a bar. No one knew what William was going with these goon, but all fingers were
pointed to Capone. William McSwiggins was a popular and young assistant state attorney, and his
death made national headlines. He was also known as the "hanging prosecutor". The shooting was
followed by a huge outcry against Capone and his men. Citizens protested against gangster and
criminal violence. The publicity gave him a infamous

Haymarket Square Riot Research Paper
The Haymarket Square Riot was on May 4, 1886. It was organized by labor radicals to protest the
killings by the Chicago police during a strike the day before at the McCormick Reaper Works. The
workers on strike that day demanded 8– hour work day when 60 hour weeks were very common at
the time. The company locked out the workers and hired people to break the strike, which was
common at the time. Two days later on May 3, a protest was held outside the McCormick Plant

was seen as cruelty by the police. The meeting was to be held at Haymarket Square in Chicago, an

Alphonse Capone (1899–1947) Al Capone 'Scarface' was born in Brooklyn on January 17, 1899,
fourth of seven sons and two daughters. His parents, Gabriel and Theresa, had immigrated to the
United States from Naples, Italy. From all known accounts, Capone's childhood was a normal one
and he had come from a devoutly religious family. His father was a barber and his mother stayed
home with the children. Capone's family were a tight–knit Italian family. There was nothing in

Chicago 's Seven Identified Sustainability Areas
Introduction
Over the course of the semester, our class has learned about cities in the United States that have
gone above and beyond to develop green government initiatives that benefit both communities and
the environment. Although I initially thought I wouldn't be able to find another city that even
compared to those we have studied, I was wrong. The Portney (2005) reading identified Chicago,
Illinois as a prime example of sustainable innovation, and as I worked through this project it became
clear why. Chicago has identified the following areas as top priorities for their sustainable
initiatives: Energy, transportation, economic development/job creation, water/wastewater,
waste/recycling, parks/open space/water, and climate change ... Show more content on

The city's top three energy goals include increasing overall city energy efficiency by 5%, city
building energy efficiency by 10%, and the renewable energy usage by 20 megawatts (City of
Chicago, 2015a). Further, since 71% of carbon emissions come from the energy used by buildings in
the city (City of Chicago, 2015a), it is unsurprising that government has taken notice. As stated by
the City of Chicago (2015a), a goal has been set to increase renewable energy use 25% by the year
2026. Reductions in carbon emissions are not only beneficial in terms of energy efficiency, but they
also reduce harm to the environment that can lead to climate change (City of Chicago, 2015a). It is
also important to note that increasing energy efficiency can include building new, costly
infrastructure that will pay off long–term, or can be as easy as replacing all street lights with energy
efficient bulbs. In fact, updating street light energy efficiency is such a simple and cost–effective
energy usage reduction tactic, it used in many of the cities we have studied this semester, such as
Portland (Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, 2011). It is evident that the City of Chicago
(2015a) believes that no sustainable effort is insignificant.
Transportation
The City of Chicago has developed several programs that address the issue of transportation. In the
city, problems associated with transportation include

Prohibition era. Having committed numerous criminal deeds and being the man behind countless

beginning of Capone's life. Alphonse Capone was born on January 17, 1899 in Brooklyn, New York

This threatened Torrio and Capone's business so they moved their business to Cicero. However, in
1924 an election for Cicero's mayor endangered their business once again so the two came up with a
plan to intimidate the citizens into voting for their candidate, even killing the competition's voters if
necessary. Although their plan worked, one of Capone's brothers, Frank was shot in the process.
After nearly being killed, Torrio retired to Italy as Capone took over his throne as Chicago's crime
leader. Under Capone's reign, his bootlegging business thrived. In order to take out the competition,
Capone even ordered men to assassinate them. Feud between his gang and rivaling gangs sparked
many conflicts and murders. One of these mass murders was the infamous Saint Valentine's Day
Massacre.
Al Capone had a multitude of rivaling gangs and their leaders who fought to control the title as
Chicago's top crime boss. Capone had only one competition, George "Bugs" Moran and his gang. In
order to remove his opposition, Capone ordered his gunmen to raze Moran's business and his
associates. On February 14, 1929, Capone's men, disguised as police officers trespassed into a
garage where Moran's business took place. Seven of Moran's men were present in

Influence Of Tourism On The Destination Being Advertised...
Tourism websites often glaze over the potential dangers or drawbacks of the destination being
advertised as a method to entice travelers to visit. Advertisers provide tourists with both excitement
and comfort by balancing the portrayal of differences and similarities between destinations and
western–civilization which are both tactics depicted by Wendy Hesford and Brenda Brueggemann in
"Travelling Gazes: Shaping Mobile Identities". Elements of style are also used in advertisements to
lure tourists to a destination as explained by Catherine Lutz and Jane Collins in "The Photograph as
an Intersection of Gazes". Chicago, Illinois shamelessly uses these methods to highlight the art,
landscape, and attractions of the city in their tourism advertisements and to detract from the issues
with crime rates, safety, and poverty that are depicted in newspapers such as The Chicago Tribune,
The Chicago Reporter, and The New York Times. These sources as well as "Community
characteristics and in–school criminal victimization" (Richard Clark and Steven Lab), "School
Violent Crime and Academic Achievement in Chicago" (Julia Burdick–Will), and various tourism
websites will aid in my discussion of the misleading advertisements used to characterize Chicago.
The art that cities choose to include in both their art galleries and on their streets characterize how
the city wants to be represented. Chicago has an array of art galleries and street art which can be
predominantly found downtown. One of

Contributions Of Jane Adddams
Jane Addams was considered the first woman to be a "public philosopher" and won worldwide
recognition for her movement as a pioneer social worker in America, a feminist, and as an
internationalist. Additionally, Jane Addams was born September 6, 1860 in Cedarville, Illinois; she
was the eighth children of nine. Growing up, Addams was not physically healthy throughout her
youth, she suffered from spinal difficulty, but was later in time it was remedied by a surgery. In
addition, it can be said that Addams lived a privileged life, her father had various important
relationships, some even included President Abraham Lincoln. According to the Stanford
Encyclopedia, "Addams was in the minority among her peers in philosophy or feminism to believe
that working class immigrant women not only should be given a voice but also had something
important to contribute to the community of ideas" (Hamington, 828). Moreover, Jane Addams was
undecided on what life path she will choose. Consequently, Addams attended and graduated from
Rockford Female Seminary in Illinois in 1881 and attended medical school. At the age of twenty–
seven, Addams and her close friend Ellen G. Starr visited a settlement house, Toynbee Hall, in
London. This visit helped to finalize Jane's idea of helping the poor area of Chicago. Specifically,
her path was settled as indicated, "On one trip with friend Ellen Gates Starr, the 27–year–old

Asian Carp Research Paper
Asian carp is an enormous problem for the Great Lakes. These species of fish can cause havoc on
their ecosystem potentially destroying a seven billion dollar fishing industry. States surrounding the
Great Lakes have come together to try to mitigate this problem. One of their most effective ways
was installing barriers that electrically shock a large majority of these destructive fish preventing
passage to Lake Michigan. Because the barrier is not one hundred percent efficient, some
organizations propose to permanently close the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal which provides the
access for the fish migration. However, this would cut off a vital recreational and commerce

it was over one hundred years ago. The disconnection between these waterways would also help
eliminate other invasive species such as: the round gobies and zebra mussels to ever make it to Lake

re–reversing the Chicago River is the return of water to Lake Michigan. According to Brammeier,

The Roaring Twenties: Background Of The 1920's
The Roaring Twenties was a time of jazz, dance, liquor, and crime. The broadway musical Chicago

Generally the area recorded a decrease in the infant mortality rate. It decreased from 7.6 in 2003 to

lowest record in the United States according to Illinois Centre for Health Statistics, a division of the
Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). According to the report, the infant mortality rate
decreased by 4.6 per cent between 2003 and 2004 and at the same period the birth rate decreased by
0.9 percent. This was due to the fall in the number of the total births in the area. However, there was
a decrease in the mortality rate in the state during this period due to the effects of the neonatal
period. The neonatal mortality rate decreased from 6.5 to 5.4 percent between 2003 and 2004 while
the postnatal mortality rate increased from 3.1to 3.0 between the same periods (2003–2004). The

Who Is To Blame For Al Capon's Suicide
Al Capone's attempt to murder leader of the Chicago gang, George (bugs) Moran–Dean O' Banion
yesterday in February 14th, 1929 was a failure after Al Capone had come to the realization that
Moran was not yet in the garage where Al Capone had thought that Moran was in. Although, Moran
was not killed Al Capone's four men that were sent to kill and murder Moran successfully killed
seven members of his northern Chicago gang, also, known as one of the most brutal massacres in
the city's underworld.
On that bloody horrid day Al Capone was in Miami at the time of the massacres. Apparently he had
arranged that four men go out and do horrible doing of the murders, two of which who were
disguised as police officers and also, served as a base in Moran's gang.
Al Capone's four men ordered Moran's seven men to stand up against the wall with their arms up
and legs spread out. Afterwards is when the bullets began to fly, the four men obviously open fired
with their machine guns and presumed with the killings. Although one of the main reasons that Al

gang and made Al Capone a great "king" to the gangs and mobsters of the underworld. Although
Capone was seen as a "king" to the many men of the underworld, he was not living the life of a true

How Did Al Capone Contribute To A Crime
Alphonse Gabriel Capone also known as "Al Capone" was an American gangster, born in Brooklyn
New York on January 17 1899. His parent were immigrants from Italy, his father was a barber and
his mother a seamstress. Al Capone had seven brothers, and two sisters. Capone went to a catholic
school, but had behavioral issues. He was expelled from school at the age of fourteen for punching a
female teacher in the face. Capone's family was very involved in criminal activity, his two older
brothers and step father ran a bottling company that sold legal and illegally. Al Capone was born
into a crime family, and I think this influenced him to become one of America's most notorious
criminals.

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson has two main characters, Daniel H. Burnham and H. H.

the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. ''It was easy to see how he got commissions. His very bearing and
looks were half the battle. He had only to assert the most commonplace thing and it sounded

Al Capone is America's best–known gangster and the single greatest symbol of the collapse of law

Capone controlled speakeasies, bookie joints, gambling houses, brothels, horse and race tracks,

a sizable interest in the largest cleaning and dyeing plant chain in Chicago.
Although he had been doing business with Capone, the corrupt Chicago mayor William "Big
Bill" Hale Thompson, Jr. decided that Capone was bad for his political image. Thompson
hired a new police chief to run Capone out of Chicago. When Capone looked for a new place to live,
he quickly discovered that he was unpopular in much of the country. He finally bought an estate at

Attempts on Capone's life were never successful. He had an extensive spy network in Chicago, from
newspaper boys to policemen, so that any plots were quickly discovered. Capone, on the other hand,
was skillful at isolating and killing his enemies when they became too powerful. A typical Capone
murder consisted of men renting an apartment across the street from the victim's residence and
gunning him down when he stepped outside. The operations were quick and complete and Capone
always had an alibi.

No Heroes No Villains Summary
Sociology 461 Criminal Justice Systems Edward M. Stern No Heroes, No Villains; by Steven
Phillips In the book No Heroes, No Villains the author Steve Phillips describes a story of a single
dramatic trial of murder it offers a thoughtful and balanced presentation of the problems besetting
our criminal courts, lays bare the mechanics of justice, and explains in graphic detail just what is
wrong and right about our criminal justice system.
Throughout this book there are many important details leading up to the trial of James Richardson.
James Richardson was the accused in the case of the deceased NY Police Officer John Skagen. John

Sad but true fact The accused James Richardson had the well know William Kunstler, who was very

Self-Moralism And Social Criticism In Jane Addams
Jane Addams wanted the mind of women to be valued and mirrored through the actions of
individuals seeking to use emotions of empathy and feeling of duty rather than self–interest. She
joined the growing pool of criticism of Social Darwinism not because of its scientific weaknesses,
but rather due to its center principal of anti–morality. She refused to accept its masculine ideals of
physical dominance to serve self–interest and its ranking of materialism. Without doubt, one of her
most stringent and remembered points of social criticism was targeted at paternalism. She routinely
exposed the motives behind 19th century philanthropists who attempted to do good to people rather
than to do good with them . Once again, her target of criticism is the male–centered way of thinking
that was pertinent in her time, due to the fact that it was overwhelmingly focused on placing oneself
ahead of another person and attempting to force yourself onto them because you feel that your way
of handling the situation is better than those who are experiencing the hardship you are attempting
to amend in the first place. She wanted less of a paternal mindset and more of a maternal one that is
categorized by empathetic collaboration instead of domination. Addams viewed new groups of
immigrants as a welcomed force into urban American society. Her ideology on race, which can be
described as pluralist, was fitting toward a strategy of reform that took aim at socioeconomic
conditions that were far too

Towards the end of September of 1982, seven people died from a Tylenol product tampering on
Chicago's West Side. Before the events, Tylenol had over one hundred million users, and was a total
frontrunner in the pain–killer industry. After the tragic events, Johnson & Johnson, parent company
of McNeil Consumer Products Company which makes Tylenol, had to face the world and explain
why their highly–trusted product was killing its consumers. (Markel, 2014)
The first announced victim was 12–year–old Mary Kellerman. The girl had cold symptoms in the
middle of the night, so her parent gave her Extra–Strength Tylenol and sent her back to bed. Next

At first, when the tampering was not known, media focused on the sensationalistic fact that Tylenol
was killing people producing a negative image for the brand. But once the real cause was known,
Tylenol was seen as a victim of the circumstances.
Before the crisis, Johnson & Johnson was not actively involved with press coverage, but when the
event occurred they appreciated the profits of media communication in order to reach out to their
consumers faster and more efficiently. Several major press conferences had place at the company's
headquarters. During the course of the events, over 100,000 news stories ran in U. S. newspapers. A
post–crisis study done by the own Johnson & Johnson company revealed that over 90 percent of the
country population knew about the Tylenol deaths within the first week. (Harris, et al., n.d.).
Experts were predicting an obscure future for the product. Advertising specialist Jerry Della Femina
stated that he was almost sure that a product under that name could never be sold again. Femina was
far from being right, since Tylenol took short time period to be back in the market, and is still

History Of The Labor Movement 1800's
The labor movement in the U.S., 1800's was filled with many strikes and protests. Many of these
protests and strikes were filled with violence and even some deaths. One important rally that
happened on May 4, 1886 in Chicago's Haymarket Square killed at least seven (7) police officers
and one civilian. Strikes were common place in the 1880s. This was important because, it was
viewed a setback for the organized labor movement in America, which was fighting for such rights
as the eight–hour workday. The rally was organized by labor radicals to protest the killing and
wounding of several workers by the Chicago police during a strike the day before at the McCormick
Reaper Works. Originally the rally was peaceful until the Chicago police came to break it up. An
unidentified person tossed a bomb into the police ranks, killing 8 and injury many others. The

Leading up to the establishment of the Chicago Police Department, the first rank of "constable" was
created in 1830. Authorization of Chicago's very own police force occurred on January 31, 1835. On

The Chicago Seven Trial Essay
One of the many excitements in the news during the late sixties was the "Chicago Seven" Trial.
People read about this crazy trial and the outlandish events that took place in the courtroom from the
defendants wearing judicial robes to crude names and accusations directed towards the Judge. Who
could we possibly expect to act so unruly in a place of order and justice? Why, the "Chicago Seven"
of course. The events that led up to this trial all began with Democratic Convention of 1968 which
took place in Chicago, Illinois.

Prior to this important meeting, in December of 1967 the YIPPIES began their plans for the
"Festival of Life", a week of questionable activities which included sleeping in Lincoln Park,
developed by Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin. It fit in well with the MOBE's plan. For their master
plan to be possible they decided to acquire a permit to allow demonstrators to sleep in the park
during Convention Week. On August 5, of 1968 they requested a permit, but failed. In addition an
eleven o'clock curfew was set for during convention week by the Mayor, but Abbie and Rubin were
not aware of the curfew until August 23 when signs were posted by the local police force. The more
radical Abbott Hoffman decided the curfew would be broken.
Two days after the YIPPIES were informed of the curfew the "Festival of Life" officially began.
Thousands eventually attended, but only one band arrived and they feared their sound equipment
would be destroyed by the police. Flowers were passed out, people smoke pot, made–out, listened to
poetry and were having a virtually peaceful and harmless time.

St. Valentines Day Massacre Of Chicago Essay
From 1924 to 1930, the city of Chicago gained a widespread reputation for lawlessness and
violence. Not coincidentally, this phenomenon coincided with the reign of chief crime lord Al

wounded in an assassination attempt in 1924, had "retired" to Brooklyn.) Prohibition, ushered in by
the passage of the 18th Amendment in 1920, had greatly increased the earnings of America's
gangsters through bootlegging (the illegal manufacture and sale of alcohol) and speakeasies (illicit

Federal authorities, including the Federal
Bureau of Investigation, had much less jurisdiction than they have today, and did not include
Chicago's gang–related activity. Chicago's gang war reached its bloody climax in the so–called St.

1929. One of Capone's longtime enemies, the Irish gangster George "Bugs"

Chicago. On February 14, seven members of Moran's operation were gunned down while standing
lined up, facing the wall of the garage. Some 70 rounds of ammunition were fired. When police

Gusenberg wouldn't talk.Police could find only a few eyewitnesses, but eventually concluded that
gunmen dressed as police officers had entered the garage and pretended to be arresting the men.

Haymarket Anarchists
he Trial of the Haymarket Anarchists is an iconoclastic account focusing on one of the most

Additionly, Musse–Kruse powerfully guards the jury selection process and the verdict dished out by
Judge Joseph E. Gary, in which both were viciously attacked post trial, by Governor Altgeld in his
statement pardoning the surviving anarchists. Messer–Kruse convincingly proves that under the law
at the time, approximately four, and possibly five, of the eight anarchists convicted were guilty as

Messer–Kruse introduces the committed anarchists as revolutionaries, but not primarily victims of a
social injustice; however he is unsuccessful in his aim to "get inside their heads and view the world

the eight separate anarchists to the political and cultural views of German workers, interestingly
even given that six of the eight sentenced men were German immigrants. Additionally Musse–Kruse
does not equate relationships between the events he discusses and the recollection of Chicago
history.

The Musical Theatre And Film
Music Theatre
1. What is the background of this art form? (where does it originate from? What important political,
cultural and/or environmental things were occurring in this part of the world that would affected the
creation of this art form?)
Musical Theatre is a form of theater combing music, songs, and spoken dialog, which can be traced
back to the theatre of ancient Greece. The music and dance were included in stage comedies and
tragedies during the 5th century BCE. However, the music is disappeared in these eras for a long
time, so that they had no real influence on the development of modern musical theatre and film.
There is no serious effect of a musical theatre over the society and political. However, it The Pacific
Standard said that Musicals have the Power to Change Minds. Although Broadway musicals are
often thought of as lightweight entertainment, many of the greatest shows incorporate serious
themes and challenge audience members' assumptions. American Psychological Association
published research provides evidence that will warm the hearts of cockeyed optimists. " Audience
members' reports of emotional engagement and insight were significantly related to hunting attitude
change. Participants who had complex emotional reactions to score higher on multiple engagement
measure. Although previous research has found a link between strength of audience emotional
involvement and personal efficacy, present results suggest an important additional role for
complexity

Madness In The City Of Chicago

  • 1. Madness In The City Of Chicago When you think of the city of Chicago you might think of the beautiful downtown skyline and scenery. You may also think of the giant bean or the 3rd tallest building the Willis tower. As many people walk the streets filled with fancy stores and five star hotels do people think about the city of Chicago as a whole really. When looking at the inner city of Chicago it has been deemed a war zone. When you are looking from the outside in all you can think of is all the killings and crimes occurring. You can only think what can be a solution to this madness, but is there really any solution. Around the age of seven I can remember the city as being fun and lively. Walking to the park with no worries and setting up the basketball hoop on the curb ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Al Capone Research Paper In 1923, Capone and Torrio had to move their operations to the suburb of Chicago, Cicero. They were forced to move their operations because of the election of William E. Denver, who was determined to end the corruption in Chicago. This was not the end of Torrio and Capone's political problems. Although, unlike in Chicago, Capone and Torrio did not let the mayoral election in Cicero push them out of the suburb. They ensured their candidates would be elected on March 31,1924, by causing some voters to be shot and killed (history.com, Al Capone). In 1925, Torrio escaped the mobster business after rival gangs tried to kill him. This left Capone as the leader of the entire operation. After Torrio left, Capone came into the spotlight. He did not stay out of the public eye, and he moved his headquarters in to the Metropole Hotel in downtown Chicago. Capone spent an enormous amount of money, and his business was booming, with an estimation of generating $100 million annually. The press constantly followed Capone, and some of the public saw him as a hero working against the prohibition.(history.com, Al Capone). Although, the picture of Capone as a hero did not last forever, because the public learned his operations were connected with violence. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example of this is in 1926, when Capone ordered his men to kill two enemies seen in Cicero. The public became angered by the violence in Chicago, and the police responded to the outcry by raiding Capone's headquarters. The documents they found would eventually lead to the downfall of Capone. Capone realized the public's unrest was a serious problem, so he called for a "Peace Conference" with all of the gangsters in Chicago. This conference did not solve any problems, because violence arose again two months later. (history.com, Al ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Chicago Residents Are Unable For A Spot Essay Chicago residents are unable to do so. In 2014, when CHA reopened its waiting lists, almost a full quarter of the city's population applied for a spot (Newman 2014). By 2013, the number of renters in Chicago that were rent burdened increased to 51% (Capperis, Ellen and Kaufman 2015, 14). The end of 2015 found 124,357 people on the CHA wait list (CHA 2015). It is against the backdrop of increasing poverty, higher rent burdens and a lack of affordable housing in the city that criticism has been launched at CHA for failing to release the total amount of vouchers they received from the federal government as well as failing to meet their stated goal of 25,000 units, but also for leaving a percentage of units "offline". By offline they mean that those units are not available to rent usually for maintenance reasons or because the unit is pending redevelopment. By the second quarter of FY2015, CHA still had 2,823 offline units (CHA 2016, 20). Since the CHA received a Moving to Work (MTW) grant from HUD, they are exempt from many of the typical reporting requirements mandated by HUD. This leaves CHA with an enormous amount of flexibility in using funds and moving funds around. This lack of accountability has been a common community complaint. As one local newspaper said, "As the city looks elsewhere, the Chicago Housing Authority has been quietly and steadily perpetrating some of the most disturbing institutional mismanagement in a city where jaw–dropping corruption is a spectator ... • 4. The First Years Of My Life For the first fifteen years of my life, I never referred to myself as a firm believer in love at first sight. People often tossed around the word love like it was nothing, but I knew that I had never truly been in love before. This all changed about a month before my sixteenth birthday when I fell in love with the windy city. In May of 2015, the band took a four–day trip to Chicago. I was thrilled for the excursion because I had only traveled outside of Kansas a few times. Those vacations were to the beach, which is nothing like the bustling metropolis of Chicago. I had never truly experienced the city life before, so I was beyond ready for this new adventure. When I arrived to Chicago, I expected to see sights that were familiar to me, like in Kansas City. Hundreds of people traveling in different directions, towering skyscrapers, and shops were all around the city. When we were just a few miles outside from Chicago, I could see the whole skyline in the distance. I was completely fascinated by the hundreds of skyscrapers that lined the city, and the sunrise that turned the sky different shades of orange, yellow, and pink. The views that I encountered while first entering Chicago were breathtaking. Throughout the whole trip, I experienced multiple new sights, smells, and sounds. As the trip came to an end, I realized that I had developed a true love for the natural and urban beauty of Chicago, and that I eventually want to call this place home in a few years. The windy ... • 5. How Did Al Capone Violate Prohibition "I violate the prohibition law––sure, who doesn't?" Al Capone admitted to a reporter for the world to hear. But not everyone who violated prohibition was quite like Al Capone, a gangster who built his massive empire upon bootlegging, and gambling in Chicago. Bringing in close to 95 million dollars a year, Al Capone was notorious for being public enemy number one. Most gangsters were born into impoverished backgrounds, but this was not the case for Capone. He was in fact from a respectable and law–abiding family of Italians who moved to New York in 1894. Born January 17, 1899 in Brooklyn, Alphonse Capone was the fourth of nine children. However, Young Al's home was far from extravagant. He lived in a slum, close to a bad area of the city. His ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He and along with a long time friend, Frank Yale, from New York, began smuggling car loads of whiskey into Chicago. This whiskey bootlegging trail was making Capone rich, but an incident involving William McSwiggins was a huge setback. In such free–for–all business, every man wanted the bigger share of profits. This escalated to the point where gangsters wouldn't settle their discussions but reached for the revolver instead. The crime leader of Chicago, Al Capone was very much the same. Men would be unsuspectingly pulled into a car and "taken for a ride". Dozens of men met their ends in such methods. The regular everyday citizens of Cicero shook off these instances simply because it didn't effect them. Until the night of May 1926, when someone was caught between the crossfire. Three men were shot down that night, two of which were gangsters and the third was William McSwiggins. McSwiggin was accidently shot by Capone's men in a shootout outside a bar. No one knew what William was going with these goon, but all fingers were pointed to Capone. William McSwiggins was a popular and young assistant state attorney, and his death made national headlines. He was also known as the "hanging prosecutor". The shooting was followed by a huge outcry against Capone and his men. Citizens protested against gangster and criminal violence. It was organized by labor radicals to protest the killings by the Chicago police during a strike the day before at the McCormick Reaper Works. The workers on strike that day demanded 8– hour work day when 60 hour weeks were very common at the time. The company locked out the workers and hired people to break the strike, which was common at the time. • 8. Al Capone Research Paper Alphonse Capone (1899–1947) Al Capone 'Scarface' was born in Brooklyn on January 17, 1899, fourth of seven sons and two daughters. His parents, Gabriel and Theresa, had immigrated to the United States from Naples, Italy. From all known accounts, Capone's childhood was a normal one and he had come from a devoutly religious family. His father was a barber and his mother stayed home with the children. Capone's family were a tight–knit Italian family. There was nothing in Capone's childhood or family life that could have predicted the rise of America's most notorious gangster. • 10. Chicago 's Seven Identified Sustainability Areas Introduction Over the course of the semester, our class has learned about cities in the United States that have gone above and beyond to develop green government initiatives that benefit both communities and the environment. Although I initially thought I wouldn't be able to find another city that even compared to those we have studied, I was wrong. The Portney (2005) reading identified Chicago, Illinois as a prime example of sustainable innovation, and as I worked through this project it became clear why. Chicago has identified the following areas as top priorities for their sustainable initiatives: Energy, transportation, economic development/job creation, water/wastewater, waste/recycling, parks/open space/water, and climate change ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The city's top three energy goals include increasing overall city energy efficiency by 5%, city building energy efficiency by 10%, and the renewable energy usage by 20 megawatts (City of Chicago, 2015a). Further, since 71% of carbon emissions come from the energy used by buildings in the city (City of Chicago, 2015a), it is unsurprising that government has taken notice. As stated by the City of Chicago (2015a), a goal has been set to increase renewable energy use 25% by the year 2026. Reductions in carbon emissions are not only beneficial in terms of energy efficiency, but they also reduce harm to the environment that can lead to climate change (City of Chicago, 2015a). It is also important to note that increasing energy efficiency can include building new, costly infrastructure that will pay off long–term, or can be as easy as replacing all street lights with energy efficient bulbs. In fact, updating street light energy efficiency is such a simple and cost–effective energy usage reduction tactic, it used in many of the cities we have studied this semester, such as Portland (Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, 2011). It is evident that the City of Chicago (2015a) believes that no sustainable effort is insignificant. Transportation The City of Chicago has developed several programs that address the issue of transportation. In the city, problems associated with transportation include ... • 12. Influence Of Tourism On The Destination Being Advertised... Tourism websites often glaze over the potential dangers or drawbacks of the destination being advertised as a method to entice travelers to visit. Advertisers provide tourists with both excitement and comfort by balancing the portrayal of differences and similarities between destinations and western–civilization which are both tactics depicted by Wendy Hesford and Brenda Brueggemann in "Travelling Gazes: Shaping Mobile Identities". Elements of style are also used in advertisements to lure tourists to a destination as explained by Catherine Lutz and Jane Collins in "The Photograph as an Intersection of Gazes". Chicago, Illinois shamelessly uses these methods to highlight the art, landscape, and attractions of the city in their tourism advertisements and to detract from the issues with crime rates, safety, and poverty that are depicted in newspapers such as The Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Reporter, and The New York Times. These sources as well as "Community characteristics and in–school criminal victimization" (Richard Clark and Steven Lab), "School Violent Crime and Academic Achievement in Chicago" (Julia Burdick–Will), and various tourism websites will aid in my discussion of the misleading advertisements used to characterize Chicago. These species of fish can cause havoc on their ecosystem potentially destroying a seven billion dollar fishing industry. States surrounding the Great Lakes have come together to try to mitigate this problem. Self-Moralism And Social Criticism In Jane Addams Jane Addams wanted the mind of women to be valued and mirrored through the actions of individuals seeking to use emotions of empathy and feeling of duty rather than self–interest. She joined the growing pool of criticism of Social Darwinism not because of its scientific weaknesses, but rather due to its center principal of anti–morality. She refused to accept its masculine ideals of physical dominance to serve self–interest and its ranking of materialism. Without doubt, one of her most stringent and remembered points of social criticism was targeted at paternalism. She routinely exposed the motives behind 19th century philanthropists who attempted to do good to people rather than to do good with them . Once again, her target of criticism is the male–centered way of thinking that was pertinent in her time, due to the fact that it was overwhelmingly focused on placing oneself ahead of another person and attempting to force yourself onto them because you feel that your way of handling the situation is better than those who are experiencing the hardship you are attempting to amend in the first place. She wanted less of a paternal mindset and more of a maternal one that is categorized by empathetic collaboration instead of domination. People read about this crazy trial and the outlandish events that took place in the courtroom from the defendants wearing judicial robes to crude names and accusations directed towards the Judge. Who could we possibly expect to act so unruly in a place of order and justice? Why, the "Chicago Seven" of course. The events that led up to this trial all began with Democratic Convention of 1968 which took place in Chicago, Illinois. Prior to this important meeting, in December of 1967 the YIPPIES began their plans for the "Festival of Life", a week of questionable activities which included sleeping in Lincoln Park, developed by Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin. It fit in well with the MOBE's plan. For their master plan to be possible they decided to acquire a permit to allow demonstrators to sleep in the park during Convention Week. On August 5, of 1968 they requested a permit, but failed. In addition an eleven o'clock curfew was set for during convention week by the Mayor, but Abbie and Rubin were not aware of the curfew until August 23 when signs were posted by the local police force. The more radical Abbott Hoffman decided the curfew would be broken. Two days after the YIPPIES were informed of the curfew the "Festival of Life" officially began. Thousands eventually attended, but only one band arrived and they feared their sound equipment would be destroyed by the police. Flowers were passed out, people smoke pot, made–out, listened to poetry and were having a virtually peaceful and harmless time. The first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. St. Valentines Day Massacre Of Chicago Essay From 1924 to 1930, the city of Chicago gained a widespread reputation for lawlessness and violence. Not coincidentally, this phenomenon coincided with the reign of chief crime lord Al "Scarface" Capone, who took over from his boss Johnny Torrio in 1925. (Torrio, who was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt in 1924, had "retired" to Brooklyn.) Prohibition, ushered in by the passage of the 18th Amendment in 1920, had greatly increased the earnings of America's gangsters through bootlegging (the illegal manufacture and sale of alcohol) and speakeasies (illicit drinking establishments), as well as gambling and prostitution. Federal authorities, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, had much less jurisdiction than they have today, and did not include Chicago's gang–related activity. Chicago's gang war reached its bloody climax in the so–called St. Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929. One of Capone's longtime enemies, the Irish gangster George "Bugs" Moran, ran his bootlegging operations out of a garage on the North Side of Chicago. On February 14, seven members of Moran's operation were gunned down while standing lined up, facing the wall of the garage. Some 70 rounds of ammunition were fired. When police officers from Chicago's 36th District arrived, they found one gang member, Frank Gusenberg, barely alive. In the few minutes before he died, they pressed him to reveal what had happened, but Gusenberg wouldn't talk.Police could find only a few eyewitnesses, but eventually concluded that gunmen dressed as police officers had entered the garage and pretended to be arresting the men. Though Moran and others immediately blamed the massacre on Capone's gang, the famous gangster himself claimed to have been at his home in Florida at the time. No one ... Ultimately the demise of four were execution, one committed suicide, and the remaining three were duled life sentences, who would later received a pardon for the conviction. In addition he also acknowledges that the prosecution congregated formidable proof of a conspiracy. This incorporates the tossing of the explosive device, not a conspiracy that simply advised violent actions in striving for a revolution. Additionly, Musse–Kruse powerfully guards the jury selection process and the verdict dished out by Judge Joseph E. Gary, in which both were viciously attacked post trial, by Governor Altgeld in his statement pardoning the surviving anarchists. Messer–Kruse convincingly proves that under the law at the time, approximately four, and possibly five, of the eight anarchists convicted were guilty as charged by Judge Joseph E. Gary. Messer–Kruse introduces the committed anarchists as revolutionaries, but not primarily victims of a social injustice; however he is unsuccessful in his aim to "get inside their heads and view the world through their eyes" as he attempted to do (p. 8). Messe–Krusse neglects to discover a linkage from the eight separate anarchists to the political and cultural views of German workers, interestingly even given that six of the eight sentenced men were German immigrants. Additionally Musse–Kruse does not equate relationships between the events he discusses and the recollection of Chicago history. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
