Instant Noodles
CHAPTER I PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND A. INTRODUCTION Instant noodles, a
steamed and deep–oil fried noodle that is also known as ramen in Japan and ramyon in Korea,
originated in Japan in the 1950s and are currently produced in over 80 countries. As of 2008,
approximately 93.6 billion servings of instant noodles have been consumed worldwide. Chinese
consumed 45.2 billion packages of instant noodles in 2008, representing 51% of the global
consumption of instant noodles, whereas Indonesians consumed 13.7 billion packages, Japanese
consumed 5.1 billion packages, Americans consumed 4.3 billion packages, and South Koreans
consumed 3.3 billion packages. South Koreans eat the highest per capita quantity of instant noodles
at 69 servings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the use of technology and innovation, by cooking instant noodles can help us to save time and
money This science investigatory project has great significance to the following: ➢ To create a
nutritious food, like mixed some vagetables and give energy for our body. ➢ To give some
knowledge for all mankind. ➢ To the future researchers, for this will serve as their future resource
material. CHAPTER II REVIEW ON RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES A. RELATED
LITERATURE From the time Momofuku Ando developed the first instant noodles, they have
dominated the noodle industry, and its effects can still be seen today. Their main customers are the
college students and other people who are always on the go, people who do not have time to cook
breakfast, or people who are lazy to. Furthermore, according to english.ndtv.com there have been
high amounts of plasticizers in instant noodles in China. The process of making the noodles is what
affects the water absorbency of the noodles. In fact according to Beijing time progress technology
development co. LTD., instant noodles are made out of a variety of doughs, which are formed to
make noodles, cooked, then deep–fried in oil. They are then put through air knives, which does not
however, remove all the oil. This is why instant noodles contain such high amounts of oil, which
causes kidney stones, and prevents it from absorbing water. Oil is not the only unhealthy

Apollo Epithets
Meditate on what balance and moderation mean to you.
Consider taking up the healing arts, whether it is a CPR class or a Reiki attunement.

For more details on the worship of Apollo, see the Greek and Roman religious library page.
Good incenses for him include a blend made from frankincense, myrrh, and bay laurel. Some add
cinnamon to it. For something more "divinatory," I add extra bay laurel and some mugwort. Mileage

Honoring him at the time you wake up and/or bedtime would be appropriate. Some "affirmations,"
or phrases to honor the god at the time could be as follows:
Waking up: Kalimera (good morning) Apollon! May your light shine upon me as I rise for the day.
Bedtime: Kalinichta (good night) Apollon! May your light inspire me even as I dream.
Prayers in ancient Greece went along the following formula:
1) Greet the god in as many of his or her names as you can––especially those relevant for the task.
For a dream oracle, Apollon Pythios, Apollon Daphnephoros, Apollon Delphinios, and Apollon
Loxias are especially good to remember.
2) Remind the god of all of the good things that you've done for him or her in the past
3) Request the favor of the god
4) Thank the god and promise to offer some form of formal sacrifice or thanks when the favor has
been granted. It goes without saying that you must remember and honor that promise.
The best incense to burn for Apollo is granules of frankinense, which is a standard offering to Greek
gods, and bay laurel.
At the Oracle of Delphi, bay laurel and barley were burned as an incense. It was said that this
indicated the humbleness of the oracle to not burn something "fancy" such as

Hieroglyphs Essay
Analysis of hieroglyphs reveals that Egyptians most commonly used enfleurage as a method for the
preparation of perfumes. This method is still in use in rural Egypt for the preparation of incense. In
this process, the natural source such as a flower or leafy material is placed on the top of purified fat
under sunlight every day for certain number of days. The essential oils present in the material
diffuse through, and the fat gets enriched with fragrance. Finally the fat is melted and filtered to
obtain the scented oil. Depending on the fat, the nature of the application. Sometimes the oils that
solidify out upon cooling were used as pomades. The famous Egyptian wax cones often found in
paintings and papyri were made this way. Aristocratic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The annex chamber next to the coffin of King Tutankhamun contained numerous jars of dried wine
and fragrances. One of the excavations revealed a double box consisting of two cartouches that were
traditionally inscribed with the names of the king. Both sides are covered by one lid made up of two
pairs of feathers with solar disks. The throne name of Tutankhamun is written four times in code.
The scarab beetle in the kings name meaning forms of appearance and the theme of perpetual
regeneration is the central theme of the vessel decoration. The container was found to contain
perfume oil residues. Another article with scented oil residues was a jar with a lion lid. The jar was
made with alabaster and decorated with gold and ivory. The jar could be swiveled sideway by the
pin on the left hand pillar. Egyptologists propose that these types of highly decorated jars were often
used for storing perfumes made from ingredients imported from distant lands. Figure 4: 4a. Unguent

Waknuk Essay
I am outraged! Today the inspector brought in this strange box which somehow displayed a moving
picture. The entirety of Waknuk protested against this foreign object, as it is surely the work of the
devil, but he insisted that it was sent from the government in Rigo. Finally, after everyone settled
down the inspector proceeded to show us something absolutely horrendous. The box showed a
horrible world which appeared to be ruled by mutants, big grotesque mutants with massive noses
upturned like a pigs and drooping skin hanging miles below their eye sockets. There is also a large
bone jutting out above their eyes in place of eyebrows and an outrageous flap of skin where the
upper lip should be. Everybody knows that man is the image of God and that the norm is the image
of God. These mutants are obvious blasphemies that are accursed in the sight of God and man. Evil
blasphemies that are a threat to our purity. As Nicholson's Repentances says " Watch thou for the
mutant". As if the disgusting picture of these blasphemous mutants wasn't enough, I had to witness
them torturing a woman who was the perfect image of God. Not only that but ... Show more content

Guided Meditation Script
When you're looking to use a guided meditation script, there are a few things you can use to really
give it an edge. It doesn't have to be much, but a few minutes of extra effort can make a huge
difference in effectiveness.
Let's step back for a moment, and remember that the idea is to get the recipient (or meditator) to
focus on the meditation, not anything and everything else. By providing a good environment, you
not only prevent distractions, but you can actually enhance and reinforce the effectiveness of your
guided meditation script.
Let's start with music. While working with the meditation in silence can work, I find that it tends to
work better with some gentle music in the background. I have a few rules I use when I'm selecting

Make sure that the room is not to hot or cold, and you might consider putting a scent in the air.
There's a lot of different ways to go for adding a scent in the air. You can go with sprays, candles,
heated essential oil, incense, or any combination of the above tin order to get the desired effect. As
with the sound background, I have a few guidelines to offer here:
Make sure that it is pleasant and accessible. Those of us who are used to incense can handle more
exotic scents, but you want the focus to be determined by what's in your guided meditation script,
not by watering eyes and coughing. On the same note, don't overdo it. A little goes a long way.
Avoid artificial scents. It may be less expensive, but quite often the scent just winds up being
cloying instead of relaxing. Again, we want to focus the attention inward. Match the type of scent
with the individual. If they react to incense (and some people do), use candles or heat up some
essential oils instead.
When you bring all of these together, the person meditating is almost instantly relaxed, and your
guided meditation script is that much more effective. There is a bit of an art to this, so keep testing
and see what works best for

Religious Site Report : The Holy Trinity Church

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH
BY BOWEN CHAN
MAY 18 2016
PROFESSOR ANTONY ANTOKIN
I went to the Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Church in San Francisco. They established in December
1857 in San Francisco then later incorporated into Greek Russian Slavonian belief. During the late
1880s, the population of the church exponentially increased, when Greek Immigration exploded and
the church was firmly confirmed as the place for dedicated worship to the Greek Orthodox faith.
After developing in community and belief, construction of the actual church only began in 1903,
when they officially became the Greek Orthodox Church in San Francisco.
The Eastern Orthodox Faith becoming the second largest is branch of Christianity that teaches what
apostolic practices orientating from the original faith of the apostles. Eastern Orthodox teaching
teaches that all bishops are equal but worships the Holy Synod instead, dividing it from the roman
catholic faith. The church traces it origins from Greece, Easter Europe, and Russia but has
developed modernly in many parts if the world including San Francisco. The church doesn't have a
patriarch, a pope, nor does it believes in the Bible but doesn't believe the Holy trinity. God is our
father, Christ is the son, our mother is holy Christ and our lord is the Holy Spirit.
During the service I attended, services in the church and involve both the clergy and faithfuls and

Sennuwy And Priestess Burning Incen: The Depiction Of...
Throughout history the depiction of women in art has changed significantly. Over time the depiction
of women has changed from very stylized figures to more naturalistic portrayals. These two pieces
of art, Lady Sennuwy and Priestess Burning Incense, came from two very different cultures. Despite
their origins, the sculptures have more similarities than differences when it comes to their creation.
Even though the sculptures have a similar purpose they are not similar in style. The depiction of
Lady Sennuwy and Priestess Burning Incense are strong representations of this evolution of women
in art.
The first work of art is Lady Sennuwy from Middle Kingdom, Egypt. This statue is from
approximately the 12th Dynasty of Egypt. The statue is a sculpture ... Show more content on

One could say that sculptures of this size mostly belonged to members of the royal family or other
important officials. The sculptures that were made at this size were meant for tombs as well. This is
case for Lady Sennuwy who "was the wife of a powerful provincial governor, Djefaihapi of Asyut,
whose rock–cut tomb is the largest nonroyal tomb of the Middle Kingdom" (MFA Boston "Statue of
Lady Sennuwy"). It is well known that the Egyptians buried their dead with their belongings so that
they would have them in the afterlife. It was also believed that the spirit of the deceased, called the
ka, could inhabit the statue (MFA Boston "Statue of Lady Sennuwy"). By depicting their dead as
youthful the Egyptians also believed that the spirit would stay youthful into the next life (Lesko).
Lady Sennuwy is also clutching a lotus flower, which is often associated with rebirth in Egyptian
culture (MFA Boston "Statue of Lady Sennuwy"). Overall the purpose of Egyptian sculpture
including Lady Sennuwy is to reflect power. When someone walks into the room at the MFA in
Boston where Lady Sennuwy is, they should feel that power. She conveys strength from the size of
the stone and stability from her seated position.
The sculpture of Priestess Burning Incense is completely opposite from Lady Sennuwy. The
Romans move away from the emphasis on youth and a stylization that is prevalent throughout
history. Instead they focused more on naturalism because they were influenced greatly by the Greek
perfection of the human body (Cartwright). One of the first things that someone might notice when
he or she approaches Priestess Burning Incense are the nicely proportioned features she has. The
naturalism of the sculpture is also emphasized by these features; she actually looks like an older
woman. There

Cloisonne Tripod Censer
The 19th century luxurious Cloisonné tripod censer has no known artist and is labeled to be from
1644 to 1911. It is made of enamel on copper alloy with a dimension of 28cm in height. In a display
with five objects, it was the most lavished in both form and colors. The ornamented pot can be
associated with higher society or respected people because the material of copper and enamel are,
unlike clay or bronzes, produced for specific groups of people with no mass production. Initially, the
dominant light blue color didn't look like a typical Chinese censer that I've seen before. However,
like other censers we see in Chinese cultures today, this tripod censer would be seen as the
centerpiece of an altar surrounded by vases and candlesticks. ... Show more content on

The colors used in the enamel are light blue as its main background that symbolizes the sky, dark
blue, yellow, dark green, light green, red and white. Every shape has a thin golden outline, which
explains the unique and non–industrialized manufacturing process. The fluid patterns seem to be
filling up the space in a non systematic nor a symmetrical way to reflect the natural behaviors of the
plants. There are no composition or main point of focus. Thus, the patterns are there to create the
surface rather than to illustrate a story. The empty areas such as the legs of the tripod are filled with
curved vine patterns. The curling vines overlap each other, creating a sense of dimension and space
on a flat surface. The leaf texture and lines make the vines recognizable. Moreover, the absence of
the leaf on the middle section of the lid shows that the curls on the lid are clouds intertwining with
smaller dragons that are hidden. This style reminisces the art of Zhou where interlacing animals
formed intricate patterns. Coincidentally, this is where the smoke or the cloud of the incense will
flow through. This censer portrays the commonly displayed theme of journey to heaven, as it is
embodied by the elements of the plants on Earth and the clouds from heaven. The use of Leiwen
patterns in the vines and clouds throughout the object helps unify the different

Religion : A Non Religious Person
As a non–religious person, asking myself what it means to say that religion is about drawing
boundaries and making connections, is kind of mind boggling. Thinking through it over and over
again, religion can draw boundaries by doing what is right and wrong based on one's religion and
their opinion of what one believes in. One's boundaries contain the inside and outside, what one is
comfortable with. Religion can make connections through over time with history, through the
individuals who came before us and help navigating, figuring certain things out. A History of
Religion in 5 ½ Objects by S. Brent Plate, explains that stones, incense, drums, crosses, and bread,
all collaborate to draw boundaries and make connections through religions. ... Show more content

Although these two religions have different opinions of belief, they are connected by a stone,
something that is permanent, something that has a permanent meaning to them. The stone, the center
spot of the earth of sacred stability, is a boundary for those who need to be surrounded by those who
were known to be Holy of the Holies. A circle, a center of something can keep something in or it can
keep something out. This stone can connect to individuals in a emotional or physical way, the stone
could symbolize as an enforcement to protect our bodies and our emotions. With religions it can be a
boundary for what one believes in and how important something is to them. Within Incense, it is
something that was used as precious and valuable that comes from far away. Over the year's incense
has become easier to come by and easier to have for oneself. "It is used not only in worship settings,
but also in purification, protection, healing, memory, marking time, and creating space. . ." (62) As
an example, the Indian rituals use a meditation scent that has been known and appreciated for
centuries. The meditation incense is there for a calming aroma that is there to create a boundary that
we feel comfortable in. within religions, some rituals do involve incense to calm those around, and
to make those feel that they are safe in their surroundings,

Categorize Short Story By Eileen Chang Summary
Once Upon a Time: Folktale Elements in Eileen Chang's Short Stories
Eileen Chang was a Chinese novelist who was known for her stories depicting 20th century Chinese
life, a time and place in which different cultures collided. Instead of depicting a perspective aligned
with either modern or traditional outlooks, Chang's work manages to reject blanket opinions of
whether one is better than the other and illustrates a world far more nuanced and that reflects the
mixing of worlds and ideas happening in the modern era. One of the most prominent ways she does
so is through the use of folk story themes: Chang uses folk elements to destroy and to satirize
dichotomies that the reader may rely on to categorize her stories, in effect depicting a more nuanced
China in which opposites work together.
In "Aloeswood Incense," Chang uses folk tale elements to highlight the falseness of the world that ...

Like "Aloeswood Incense," the story is introduced by the narrator inviting the reader to listen to his
or her tale, as if the story is being told orally. This theme is reinforced later when the narrator
switches from present– to past–tense, and cannot decide the age of the story's protagonist. In
addition, the narrator observes that Chuanqing "[seems] to have dozed off" (79). This subjectivity of
the narrator distances the reader from the story, but at the same time Chang's focus on Chuanqing's
inner thoughts pulls the reader into his mind. The effect of these contrasting themes is that the reader
is able to criticize Chuanqing's choices but also to empathize with him, reflecting a balance between
the traditional judging of anyone who challenges the social order, as seen in Lu Xun's "Diary of a
Madman," and the more modern exploration of the self as a reflection of the surrounding

The Ludovisi Throne is 0.84 m or a little bit over two and a half feet tall and three sided. It is
originally from Locri Epizefiri in the south of Italy and was found in 1887 close to the Villa
Ludovisi in Rome. Since 1901 the Ludovisi Throne is held in Rome, Museo Nazionale. This piece is
a perfect blending of late Archaic grace with severe style. This piece was created around 460 BCE
and is a beautiful sculpture of this time period.
The first panel shows a naked flute girl who is playing a double flute. Her right leg crossed while
she 's reclined, which is said to be anatomically impossible. Her hair is in a bun and wrapped in a

Anchor Analysis
This article will discuss how to create anchors using various techniques. An anchor is a trigger that
sets off an emotional cascade in you. Anchors can create good emotions and bad emotions. The
principle is one of association. If we associate a certain trigger with a certain emotion then we are
almost sure to get the same response every time. You may have heard of a very famous experiment
by Ivan Pavlov on the emotional conditioning of dogs. If you have not heard of it, I would suggest
that you type it into Google and read about the experiment. This experiment demonstrated that it
was possible to create a predetermined emotional response with a trigger or anchor (in this case a
ringing bell) provided that the subject (the dog) was pre–conditioned ... Show more content on

Each and every one of us has anchors programmed in us. The problem is that most of us are not
aware that these anchors exist or the effect that they have on us as individuals. Anchors can take
shape in many different forms. They can be anchors based on sight, sound, touch or any other of the
senses. It would be easier to give a specific example. Let us assume that ten years ago you attended
the funeral of an aunt of yours who you loved very much. During the funeral, they burnt incense as
part of the ceremony. You were obviously in a state of high emotional turmoil. You breathed in the
incense with its distinctive smell. Ten years later you pass a shop on your way to work. You notice
that there is something about the shop that makes you feel very low but you can't figure out exactly
what is causing you to feel that way. After all, it is a wonderful day in summer and you have your
vacation to look forward to. Without you consciously realising it, that shop is actually burning the
same brand of incense that was at your aunt's funeral. The smell that you are taking in is triggering a
subconscious reaction to the emotions that you experienced at your aunt's funeral. Even after ten
years, you still experience the same emotions again. The anchor is the smell of the incense and the
outcome is the low mood that you experienced as a

Think citrusy oils for the kitchen and flowery ones for the bathroom. 3. Use A Diffuser This is one
of the more popular options when it comes to purifying air. Whether you buy your pure essential oils
or use homegrown herbs to make your own, it works. If you want to create your own blend ideal to
purify your air consider this combination: three drops each of sweet orange and pine, plus two drops
each of clove bud and cinnamon leaf. It's as easy as can be. You can leave it running until the
chamber is empty once a day, or more often if you feel the need. If you have children you will want
to be sure to choose an essential oil that is safe for them to breathe. 4. Herbal Air Freshener An
herbal air freshener is an excellent way to reduce the airborne viruses floating about your home. It's
much like the diffusion blend and the cleaning spray combined. You can spray them on your
clothing and/or on your sheets and pillowcases before bedtime or in the air and on the furniture. It's
basically homemade Febreze, without the chemicals and cheaper if you're growing your own herbs.
You'll need 20 drops each of lemon and pine essential oils, add these to a half cup of witch hazel and
another half cup of a strong rosemary infusion. Combine them together in a spray bottle and shake
vigorously before each use. 5. Herbal Incense The practice of smudging with herbal incense has

Reflection Of Shadow Casting
The Holter Museum, in Helena, MT, is currently displaying a series of work by John Saurer. Saurer
received his BA at Hope College in sculpture and drawing, he continued to earn his MFA at
Colorado State University in sculpture, and has been teaching art at St. Olaf College since 1995
(Saurer). His current exhibit is called Across Tender Land and was inspired by Saurer's surroundings
while growing up (Shadow Casting). On piece, in particular, caught my eye. His Shadow Casting
sculpture is around 75 pieces of welded steel and charred wood composed into different shapes
mounted on a wall. When I first saw this piece, I found it interesting, but as I got closer, sensored
lights came on and caused each piece to cast a shadow on the wall behind the sculpture. This piece
of art reminded me the incense burner that has been discussed in our book (Stokstad, 4–13). I was
reminded of the incense burner that was found in Prince Liu Sheng's tomb in China. Each piece was
created to be viewed with the help of an other medium; smoke and light. Shadow Casting becomes
much more aesthetically pleasing when the light casts the shadow, just as the incense burner
becomes more aesthetically pleasing when it is viewed with smoke swirling around the mountain
peaks. As I was looking at Shadow Casting, the first piece of art that came to mind was the incense
burner because of the special way each is viewed. As I continued to think about both pieces I
released they were, by majority, different, but

Halloween and Day of the Dead can be similar but on the bottom line they are very different by the
way they decorate, what they eat, and how they celebrate the holidays. The two holidays may seem
similar at first but after understanding the complexity of the ideas behind both holidays actions, your

one last meal with the people they loved. The Day of the Dead has a thought out meal plan during
the holiday but Halloween just has candy, pumpkins, and other famous sweets like candy corn.
Halloween and Dia de los Muertos have different ways to celebrate their holidays. First of all
Halloween is only one day while the Day of the Dead is actually three days. Halloween takes place
on October 31st which at night is when people trick or treat. The reason by trick or treating is from
an old story that was told that you should go to house to house asking for goods to scare away the
bad souls which started reflecting on all the scary decorations during the holiday. While the Day of
the Dead is October 31st–November 2nd which all the days reflect on the people who passed on and
to celebrate life. People respect and have a meal at their incense grave sites with the souls that are
good and that are now passed on to a better place.
Halloween and Dia de los Muertos are similar but very different in the ways they, decorate, eat, and
the way they celebrate. These two holidays are very interesting and can be seen as similar

Functionalist Theorists
Incense are made of all natural materials used for direct burning. Today, and in history, incense are
known to be ritualistic and needed to complete various traditions. Based on my own religion,
Catholic churches often use incense to prepare for prayers and rituals. Incense are used in Catholic
churches mainly during prayers for smell, and for the use of smoke. The aroma of incense are used
to communicate with God, by sending good wishes, and prayers through its rich fragrance.
Conflict Theorists
Many people who aren't religious believe incense are not necessarily needed to complete rituals or
prayers. In other words,

Excerpt From The Book Thief
In a dimly lit stone room, gathered around a simple stone table, surrounded by plain stone pillars,
eight large figures stood barking at each other in harsh, guttural tones. The room was undecorated;
made for utility without much care for how it pleased the eye. The green–skinned men occupying
the room were far better decorated, wearing coloured furs over their leather and chain armor. Each
one was adorned with a sigil representing their tribe hanging from a chain around their neck. The
largest among them, however, wore no sigil. Instead he wore a simple iron crown with no
decorations. This marked him as the chosen leader of the tribes, and he was the only one present
who held a blade. The warchief would lead them to victory, then ascend to ... Show more content on

When the warchief was sure that he had the room's attention, he spoke again. "Each of you want the
same thing." he declared, "Yet none of you want to accept that you are in agreement with the other."
The chieftains scowled at warchief, but said nothing. They knew he spoke the truth. "And what
would it be, then, that we want?" asked one the younger, more bold chieftains. "War" stated the
warchief, matter–of–factly, "were it anything else, none of us would be here. And I would not have
been picked to lead our united tribes." The chieftains nodded in agreement. It was now the oldest of
the chieftains who took the opportunity to speak. "Indeed, war is the purpose of this gathering." the
old chief tapped the table impatiently, indicating the maps sprawled across the table. "But it is
methods of war that we seek to discuss". The warchief snorted in derision. "If that is what you think,
then you are getting ahead of yourselves." There was a murmur of confusion among the chieftains,
which was squelched as the warchief continued, "Though our numbers have grown beyond what we
can sustain on the light shafts we currently control, I am not convinced that war with the pale–skins

A Visual Analysis OfA Pair Of Sensing Angels?
Museums add new context for artwork, since historical items were not made to be in modern
museums. A Pair of Sensing Angels by Circle of Bernaert Orley are two 'one by three foot' oil
painting on wood from 1535–1540 that depicts two angels. Presently it is located in Gallery 117 at
the Art Gallery of Ontario. When observing "A Pair of Censing Angels" we can infer the subject, the
value the painting held, and how the meaning alters in its present setting. This visual analysis
observes the properties in A Pair of Sensing Angels and the response that these properties and the
museum display has on the viewer.
There are unifying factors that argue that these paintings are part of a collection together. Both
angels are positioned upright in the vibrant blue sky, with their body fitting within the picture plane.
They appear gentle and are viewed from straight on. The angels are equal sizes and almost mirror
each other, except for an item in their hand and the placement of colours.
These angels are adult sized females, wearing flowing clothing. They are both blond, wearing
similar attire, and using similar colour pallets. The angel on the left is wearing a light pink dress
with layers under of white and blue. The angel on the right is wearing "a velvet black robe" with
layers under of pink according to the museum description. The clothes gently lift to give the illusion
of floating. A lot of moulding and detail in the shadows are used to make the fabric look textured
rather than flat. The drapery suggests an attempt at naturalism. There us a lot of details and darks
and light in the material. There is a difference between the heavier material which falls down with
less small crinkles, and the lighter material which is flowing against gravity.
There is also a focus on detail on the incense containers. They have a lot of texture and strings on it.
Light reflects from the metal, similar to how it reflects off the fabric of the dresses. The use of the
incense swinging to the center, the wings, the similar paint colours and the similar physical features
insists on a unison between these paintings.
Angels are associated with religion. These figures are angels because of their wings and ability to
fly. Knowing this, we

Angel Gabriel Looks At Mariana And Not Mary
What is more interesting is that Angel Gabriel looks at Mariana and not Mary in the painting which
suggests a hope, she wants her love to be consummated, a Gabriel to come to her and inform her but
it intensifies the pathos even further."Mary" which in Hebrew means uncertainty, as she was
uncertain whether she would be able to conceive until Gabriel arrived but "Mary" (uncertainty) +
"Ann" (graceful) leads us to "Mariana" who is gracefully expecting even though she is uncertain
about her destiny. The heraldry depicts snowdrop which represents consolation, according to floral
symbolism. However, it is the flower associated with the ritual of St. Agnes' Eve, when adolescent
girls hope for visionary glimpses of prospective husbands. These meta–representations projects the
mental state of the subject sometimes through contrast and irony as well. We see an altar, a private
devotional space so we have a sense of her life being taken up between prayer and meditation which
in turn accentuates the theme of longing. The metallic objects add to the visual irony as a church like
atmosphere of marriage is being created in Mariana's room which is never possible. Mariana still
wears a waistband which can symbolise her hopes of conjugal bliss which is clearly visible against
the deep hue of her dress. The presence of the only animal in the painting, that is the mouse, who
seems to be her ironic companion and in terms of materiality it is equated with Mariana's secluded
existence. The

Cultural Diversity For Nursing Care
Identify and discuss concepts related to cultural diversity in nursing.
Culture is a multifaceted characters of a diverse sets of people that have a common ground on
values, languages, emotions and identity. It is a symbolic communication perpetuated in a much
larger society that influence by means of conditioning and imitation from one generation to the next.
Knowledge of cultural diversity is crucial at all levels of nursing practice. It require nurses to be

Who Will Light the Incense When Mother’s Gone? & On...
When reading non–fiction we have to think critically about what the writer is trying to convey in
their piece. We look at formalist criticism and historical criticism, to see if there is anything that
belong in either of those two categories. Writers also can also use different strategies in order to
convey their thesis or themes. The non–fiction works that I have chosen are "Who Will Light the
Incense When Mother's Gone?" by Andrew Lam and "On Going Home" by Joan Didion. I will
discuss their theme and how Lam and Didion conveyed that theme into their work and for what
purpose and to whom it was for. I will also discuss why it is considered a piece of non–fiction and
how imagination plays a part in the selected stories.

Didion is explaining that the term home, now has a different meaning to the younger generation. She
explains how she feels about being home and what she wishes for her young daughter. She exclaims
how she cannot give the life or feeling of "home" to her daughter, like she had. "...would like to give
her home for her birthday, but we life differently now and I can promise her nothing like that."
(p.637)
Strategy Purpose & Audience Didion is trying to convey the feeling of being home again. Even
though Didion is getting into her thirties, married, with a child and with a home of her own, being at
the place she grew up brings unexpected feelings. "...and yet I was almost thirty years old before I
could talk to my family on the telephone without crying after I had hung up." (p.636) During the
time that Didion left home, the idea that you were never able to come home again weighted heavy
on your mind. The purpose of this story could be to see if anyone still felt the same way about being
home, like she did. Anyone who has left home, and wished to come back could relate to this

For the lecture, I attended I went to Professor's Eric Palazzo talk on the five senses on an illustration

specifically Christianity. In the lecture, Professor Eric Palazzo explained the connections if any from
the charter to the illustration. He also takes a time to explain every detail of the Christian illustration
from the curtain to the people. In the lecture, he explains how in the charter it says things that don't

Which was very confusing to me because at first seeing the image you don't think of any of the five
senses. The image looks like a typical painting from the middle ages depicting religion. But as
Professor Eric Palazzo went along explaining his reasoning it all fit in place. The illustration shows
what looks like a deacon or priest holding the incense looking like he's waving across the table. But
it is not the deacon but Christ. It was very confusing to me at first to understand how the deacon was
christ and why was he incensing the table. He explained that the deacon using the incense he
become Christ and sees through smelling the incense connecting to the image above which is not
two separate image but one, the image above being Jesus. The men watching the deacon is like them
seeing Christ there the incest. Also, the image of the bells represented the hearing sense. People

the taste sense can be explained by the wine in the painting. The last sense being touch is

Analyzing The Story 'Who Will Light Incense When Mothers...
In the story "Who Will Light Incense When Mothers Gone?" the author has created multiple themes
or ways to interpret the purpose behind the story. Lam says, "She turns 70 but she remains a
vivacious woman – her hair is still mostly black, there is still a girlish twang in her laughter, and her
eyes twinkle at the telling of a joke" (Lam). The way the author speaks about Mrs. Lam, using such
vivid language shows that he takes time to appreciate the person she is and how she lights the room
up. Showing so much attention to detail about someone can really show the love towards one
another, thus allowing filial love to be an alternative theme of the story. Filial love is a love from a
child to his or her parents, in this case Andrew Lam is speaking ... Show more content on

Vietnam is very much relevant to this story because of the fact that Lam's mother brings over
Vietnamese traditions in hope that her children will continue to carry on their her legacy. According
to the "who will light incense when mothers gone?" , Lam create the idea of Vietnams identity by
saying, "mumbles solemn prayers to the spirits of our dead ancestors, and to the all–compassionate
Buddha. Here he is explaining a Vietnam tradition his mother practiced as a daily routine, asking for
protection of her children and that they shall thrive in America. Between the family moving to
America and the mother asking of her God for her kids to prosper in America, this tells readers that
the education system or dreams for a good career probably are not as advantageous as the
opportunities in America. One of the biggest challenges in the Vietnam school system is that if a
student has a question about something, they are not allowed to address the instructor unless called
upon. If the student never gets called upon the student must than go back through the notes they
took during class and find the answer. But what if the notes were not written down correctly? Than
that student has just answered the question on the next test incorrectly because of inadequate
communication of the school system. How is a Vietnam student supposed to have a reasonable
career if the countries school system is failing them. However, just as the Lam family has done,
moving to America will allow a strong and more improved education for a levelheaded career. This
is also known to be considered the American Dream way of

Life, Growth, And Separation
Personally Relating to Themes
I can personally relate to the theme for "Salvation." Although I do believe that Jesus is real, I have
experienced a loss of my childlike innocence and faith in the belief that everything my elders tell me
is the truth. For example, I am sure that most of us grew up with stories of Santa Claus, the Easter
Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy, among others. As a child, I believed that these people were real.
However, as I grew up I began to realize that these were just stories that our parents told us to make
us behave. Additionally, I can relate to the theme of life, growth, and separation. At my age, I have
had numerous human experiences that have added meaning to my life and made me see myself as an
adult. Plus, I have experienced the separation of myself from my parents which has helped me to
form my own beliefs and become my own person. I think that the intended purposes of this story
and its theme are to persuade the audience to belief in these ideas, and for entertainment. I can also
personally relate to the theme for "Who Will Burn Incense When Mothers Gone?". I have already
addressed how I can relate to the theme of separation and growth. In addition, I have experienced a
sense of loss of tradition in my family as I have grown older. As a child, I can clearly remember
many traditions my family took part in. For instance, we put our Christmas tree up every year on my
mother's birthday because it was a few weeks before the

Essay On Canarium
1.0 Introduction
Canarium schweinfurthii Engl. (Burseraceae) is a large tropical tree widely distributed in East,
Central, and West Africa. A mature tree reaches a height of 45–57 m with a straight cylindrical bole
up to 27 m with a trunk diameters of 1.2 to 1.5 m over a slight buttress root (Mbagwu et al., 2008).
The tree is cultivated for its fruits which are edible and produce oil which is harvested on a large
scale in West Africa. The oil from the resin is also used in perfumery and medicines due to its
lavender like smell. In Uganda, the resin from the tree is usually burnt to produce incense for
ceremonial purposes(Ssegawa and Kasenene, 2007). The stem and bark are used to treat coughs,

So far, no work has been done on the use of Canarium oil.
The resin of Canarium contains a high percentage of essential oils with known antioxidant and
antifungal properties (Koudou et al., 2005; Obame et al., 2007). Therefore, we were interested if the
essential oil could be used as a protective agent against termites as well. Furthermore, location and
climatic conditions have an effect on the growth of a tree and its production of resin and essential
oils. Therefore we wanted to establish if the oil from Uganda contains the same components as the
oils obtained from other parts of Africa.
In this study, the chemical composition of the essential oil from the resin of Ugandan Canarium was
determined, and its anti–termitic activity was established.
2. Experimental procedures
2.1 Plant materials
The resin of Canarium schweinfurthii was harvested from the bark of a mature tree in Sango bay
and stored in a freezer. Termites used in the assay were Macrotermes bellicosus as these have been
found to be the most destructive to wood and timber. Termites above the third instar were used.
2.2 Isolation of essential oils
The essential oil was obtained by steam distillation of the resin (50g) for 4 hours. The oil obtained
was dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate and kept in amber coloured bottles at 4 oC prior to
analysis.

Daoist Belief In Lao Zi : The Book Of Tao And Lao Qi
The art of landscape pieces depicts the Daoist faith. Daoism desires enhancement of the Dao, the
way or path, within a person, which one achieves through education, meditation and rituals, and
enhancement of the qi. Qi is the vital energy surrounding an area. Core concepts of Daoism are
identifiable in the analysis of artwork from popular time periods of the belief system. The piece of
art, referred to as hill shaped incense burner, crafted in 113 BCE was excavated in 1968 from the
tomb of Prince Liu Sheng and Dou Wan (Neave 142). The visual elements of art used in the hill
shaped incense burner visually represent Daoist beliefs identified in Lao Zi: The Book of Tao and
Teh: the importance of mountains, behaving like water, and the simple natural way of life. The
immortal's dwelling in the mountains, an important belief in religious Daoism, is seen in the large
dimensions of the mountain's peak, vertical lines, detailed texture appearance, and smoke
representing qi in the mountain's atmosphere. Authors of Asian Art state, "the worship of deities who
inhabited the sacred mountain...the pursuit of immortality" (Neave 140). The origins of religious
Daoism are difficult to identify, however, historians believe the idea of deities pursuing immortality
in the sacred mountains relates to the dualistic beliefs in Daoism. According to this quotation, the
Daoist's belief of immortal's residence in the mountains is a central idea of religious Daoism, hence,

The first thing that catches the attention, is the Chinese architecture of the temple and all of the
Chinese words on the outside of the temple. The words on the four pillars of the gate, represent the
four Bodhisattva vows the Buddhists take to complete enlightenment. There are many rooms on the

The temple contains the images of many bodhisattvas,Buddha's, and disciples. The images of the
Buddha's and bodhisattvas are the focus of the rooms and outside. For example, in the main shrine
and Bodhisattva hall, the focus are the images. Another example is the garden of the eighteen arhats
in which the Buddha is surrounded by his first disciples. The other garden that is in the temple is the
Vessel of Compassion for Universal Liberation. The main image in this garden is that of
Avalofitesvara Bodhisattva. The other images depicted are of heaven kings. The bodhisattva is
important because the vows of this Bodhisattva are of a compassionate mind and the power of
wisdom. This bodhisattva answers the prayers of sentient beings no matter where they are and
manifests in different forms. These eighteen arhats extinguished all defilements and afflictions. They
had reached nirvana and their righteousness is exemplary to all Buddhists. Comparatively, symbols
play an important role in buddhism and we can see this through the offers made to the Buddha's and
bodhisattvas. For example, incense symbolizes inner peace, a lamp offering symbolizes the
brightening of our vision and the enhancement of our wisdom. In addition, in the images, mudras or
certain objects are a symbol of important rules to follow. Such as in image of the Bodhisattva
Samantabhadra, the elephant symbolizes practice. The sounds that are used are that of instruments
during the service in the main shrine and the sound of bells which usually mark the initiation of a
service or other announcements. Furthermore, the smells that are used throughout the temple are
incense. Incense is used as an offering and it is meant to help the Buddhist concentrate and focus on
meditating. Lastly, taste is used in the ritual of eating vegetarian meals

unfortunately over time he slowly distanced himself from his Vietnamese roots. Andrew's dilemma
is one that most, if not all families that immigrate to the United States face. Lam's mother would

aunt knew that when die there customs will end on the grounds that the adolescent and fate of the

Of Who Will Light The Incense When Mother's Gone By Andrew...
In the essay, "Who will Light the Incense When Mother's Gone?" by Andrew Lam, the theme is
recognized to be one of the key elements. The theme of this essay is the mother's fear of her children
leaving behind the sense of their ancestors. This theme commonly occurs with children of immigrant
parents because after being raised in America they neglect the fact where they originally came from.
The theme of this story is keeping up traditions. Lam's mother displays the theme love by following
and committed to explain her children the values and culture. Lam's mother keeps up the traditions
of her native nation because she does not want to forget something that is precious to her. The writer
starts out asking, "Who will light the incense when mother's gone?" at his mother's 70th birthday

For the interethnic church experience, I went to St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in
Carmichaels, Pennsylvania. I attended with three of my friends Ashley, Cassandra, and Jennifer. My
friends came along in order to gain the experience from the church with me. We all had different
experiences, but we all felt glad that we went together and to the church. When planning to go to the
church, I read some articles on the proper etiquette of the church, and how to act in an Orthodox
church. The rules included sitting up straight or standing for the whole service as they do in other
parts of the world, and how to venerate an icon. I was nervous to do all these steps, because I did not
want to mess up or offend anybody. However, I practiced and tried to be prepared. Also, picking an
outfit was a struggle because I wanted to be very respectful to the culture. The church that I attend
when I am at home is very relaxed, and do not care if a person wears jeans to the service. They still
want the people in attendance to be respectful and modest, but besides that, people can wear
whatever the feel comfortable in. When preparing to attend this church however, I picked my outfit
carefully and hoped that I would be dressed up enough. When I arrived, I saw that I was and felt
more relaxed. I was also nervous about the language barrier, as I do not know Serbian. I did not
know if the whole service would be in Serbian or if only part of it would be in a foreign language. I
was excited to

Herbs: Wicca And Paganism
About Herbs Herbs have been used throughout the ages not just for their culinary benefits. In the use
of magick and healing certain herbs and plants are used for their spirits or characteristics. Herbs
were used in incenses potions, and amulets to protect against evil, draw abundance, and give
protection and to heal all type of illnesses. In early times when herbs were added to foods, they were
mainly included for their magickal or medicinal properties, instead of for their flavor. A good deal of
herbal lore has been forgotten, but as luck would have it the popularity and rising interest in Wicca
and Paganism has meant more people have increased their knowledge on this intriguing topic and
are concentrating on the gifts that nature has to present us. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

They can be worked for protection, divination; banishing, purification, evoking and sprinkling a

Herbs Are Worked In Magick Like individuals, herbs have a gender. They are ruled by not only by
an element, but also a planet and are more often than not, they are dedicated to a God or Goddess.
This is the herbal correspondence, an important element in Wiccan Magick. You'll find that growing
and cultivating herbs in your own garden can give you the benefit of having your energies already
influencing your plants. A plant such as Dill, which is ruled by Mars, will then have all of the effect
of the Sun and Fire, along with your personal energies. Ways to Use Herbs Charms and sachets –

A Visit At San Jose Buddhist Church
Awakening For this experience, I decided to explore Buddhism in order to enhance my involvement
with the religion and build a strong understanding. What intrigued me about Buddhism was the
social aspect and diversity that it had to offer. In order to explore this religion from a critical and
analytical viewpoint, I decided to attend a weekend service offered at San Jose Buddhist Church
Betsuin. The San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin main temple is located in the Japantown section of
Central San Jose. What made this temple stand out amongst the others was its historical standing in
the community. It is one of the oldest temples established in the United States. In order to learn more
about the history, environment, and community as a whole, I decided to contact the temple's staffs.
After a brief phone call, I was able to schedule a tour. In preparation, I decided to do a brief research
on Buddhism to familiarize myself with the religion beforehand. With all preparations and research
necessary, I was ready to visit San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin.
Upon arrival, I was given a brief history about of the Buddhist temple. The San Jose Buddhist
Church Betsuin is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the United States. Although it was
established in 1907, construction wasn't completed until 1937. During World War II, it was served as
a home to many Japanese–Americans released from internment camps. Today, the temple continues
to play an active role in the lives of their descendance

Read up on channeling and automatic writing. See if you can find a technique that inspires you. This can be a great way to get ideas on writing in general, whether it be fiction or poetry. Meditate on one of Apollo's attributes or epithets. For more details on the worship of Apollo, see the Greek and Roman religious library page. Good incenses for him include a blend made from frankincense, myrrh, and bay laurel. Some add cinnamon to it. For something more "divinatory," I add extra bay laurel and some mugwort. Some "affirmations," or phrases to honor the god at the time could be as follows: Waking up: Kalimera (good morning) Apollon! May your light shine upon me as I rise for the day. Bedtime: Kalinichta (good night) Apollon! May your light inspire me even as I dream. Prayers in ancient Greece went along the following formula: 1) Greet the god in as many of his or her names as you can––especially those relevant for the task. For a dream oracle, Apollon Pythios, Apollon Daphnephoros, Apollon Delphinios, and Apollon Loxias are especially good to remember. 2) Remind the god of all of the good things that you've done for him or her in the past 3) Request the favor of the god 4) Thank the god and promise to offer some form of formal sacrifice or thanks when the favor has been granted. It goes without saying that you must remember and honor that promise. The best incense to burn for Apollo is granules of frankinense, which is a standard offering to Greek gods, and bay laurel. At the Oracle of Delphi, bay laurel and barley were burned as an incense. It was said that this indicated the humbleness of the oracle to not burn something "fancy" such as ... This method is still in use in rural Egypt for the preparation of incense. In this process, the natural source such as a flower or leafy material is placed on the top of purified fat under sunlight every day for certain number of days. The essential oils present in the material diffuse through, and the fat gets enriched with fragrance. Finally the fat is melted and filtered to obtain the scented oil. One of the excavations revealed a double box consisting of two cartouches that were traditionally inscribed with the names of the king. The scarab beetle in the kings name meaning forms of appearance and the theme of perpetual regeneration is the central theme of the vessel decoration. The entirety of Waknuk protested against this foreign object, as it is surely the work of the devil, but he insisted that it was sent from the government in Rigo. Finally, after everyone settled down the inspector proceeded to show us something absolutely horrendous. The box showed a horrible world which appeared to be ruled by mutants, big grotesque mutants with massive noses upturned like a pigs and drooping skin hanging miles below their eye sockets. There is also a large bone jutting out above their eyes in place of eyebrows and an outrageous flap of skin where the upper lip should be. Everybody knows that man is the image of God and that the norm is the image of God. These mutants are obvious blasphemies that are accursed in the sight of God and man. Evil blasphemies that are a threat to our purity. As Nicholson's Repentances says " Watch thou for the mutant". It doesn't have to be much, but a few minutes of extra effort can make a huge difference in effectiveness. Let's step back for a moment, and remember that the idea is to get the recipient (or meditator) to focus on the meditation, not anything and everything else. By providing a good environment, you not only prevent distractions, but you can actually enhance and reinforce the effectiveness of your guided meditation script. Let's start with music. While working with the meditation in silence can work, I find that it tends to work better with some gentle music in the background. I have a few rules I use when I'm selecting such ... There's a lot of different ways to go for adding a scent in the air. You can go with sprays, candles, heated essential oil, incense, or any combination of the above tin order to get the desired effect. As with the sound background, I have a few guidelines to offer here: Make sure that it is pleasant and accessible. Those of us who are used to incense can handle more exotic scents, but you want the focus to be determined by what's in your guided meditation script, not by watering eyes and coughing. On the same note, don't overdo it. A little goes a long way. Avoid artificial scents. It may be less expensive, but quite often the scent just winds up being cloying instead of relaxing. Again, we want to focus the attention inward. Match the type of scent with the individual. If they react to incense (and some people do), use candles or heat up some essential oils instead. When you bring all of these together, the person meditating is almost instantly relaxed, and your guided meditation script is that much more effective. • 13. Sennuwy And Priestess Burning Incen: The Depiction Of... Throughout history the depiction of women in art has changed significantly. Over time the depiction of women has changed from very stylized figures to more naturalistic portrayals. These two pieces of art, Lady Sennuwy and Priestess Burning Incense, came from two very different cultures. Despite their origins, the sculptures have more similarities than differences when it comes to their creation. Even though the sculptures have a similar purpose they are not similar in style. The depiction of Lady Sennuwy and Priestess Burning Incense are strong representations of this evolution of women in art. The first work of art is Lady Sennuwy from Middle Kingdom, Egypt. This statue is from approximately the 12th Dynasty of Egypt. The statue is a sculpture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One could say that sculptures of this size mostly belonged to members of the royal family or other important officials. The sculptures that were made at this size were meant for tombs as well. This is case for Lady Sennuwy who "was the wife of a powerful provincial governor, Djefaihapi of Asyut, whose rock–cut tomb is the largest nonroyal tomb of the Middle Kingdom" (MFA Boston "Statue of Lady Sennuwy"). It is well known that the Egyptians buried their dead with their belongings so that they would have them in the afterlife. It was also believed that the spirit of the deceased, called the ka, could inhabit the statue (MFA Boston "Statue of Lady Sennuwy"). By depicting their dead as youthful the Egyptians also believed that the spirit would stay youthful into the next life (Lesko). Lady Sennuwy is also clutching a lotus flower, which is often associated with rebirth in Egyptian culture (MFA Boston "Statue of Lady Sennuwy"). Overall the purpose of Egyptian sculpture including Lady Sennuwy is to reflect power. When someone walks into the room at the MFA in Boston where Lady Sennuwy is, they should feel that power. She conveys strength from the size of the stone and stability from her seated position. The sculpture of Priestess Burning Incense is completely opposite from Lady Sennuwy. The Romans move away from the emphasis on youth and a stylization that is prevalent throughout history. Instead they focused more on naturalism because they were influenced greatly by the Greek perfection of the human body (Cartwright). One of the first things that someone might notice when he or she approaches Priestess Burning Incense are the nicely proportioned features she has. The naturalism of the sculpture is also emphasized by these features; she actually looks like an older woman. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is made of enamel on copper alloy with a dimension of 28cm in height. In a display with five objects, it was the most lavished in both form and colors. The ornamented pot can be associated with higher society or respected people because the material of copper and enamel are, unlike clay or bronzes, produced for specific groups of people with no mass production. Initially, the dominant light blue color didn't look like a typical Chinese censer that I've seen before. Every shape has a thin golden outline, which explains the unique and non–industrialized manufacturing process. The fluid patterns seem to be filling up the space in a non systematic nor a symmetrical way to reflect the natural behaviors of the plants. There are no composition or main point of focus. Thus, the patterns are there to create the surface rather than to illustrate a story. The empty areas such as the legs of the tripod are filled with curved vine patterns. The curling vines overlap each other, creating a sense of dimension and space on a flat surface. The leaf texture and lines make the vines recognizable. Moreover, the absence of the leaf on the middle section of the lid shows that the curls on the lid are clouds intertwining with smaller dragons that are hidden. This style reminisces the art of Zhou where interlacing animals formed intricate patterns. Coincidentally, this is where the smoke or the cloud of the incense will flow through. Categorize Short Story By Eileen Chang Summary Once Upon a Time: Folktale Elements in Eileen Chang's Short Stories Eileen Chang was a Chinese novelist who was known for her stories depicting 20th century Chinese life, a time and place in which different cultures collided. Instead of depicting a perspective aligned with either modern or traditional outlooks, Chang's work manages to reject blanket opinions of whether one is better than the other and illustrates a world far more nuanced and that reflects the mixing of worlds and ideas happening in the modern era. One of the most prominent ways she does so is through the use of folk story themes: Chang uses folk elements to destroy and to satirize dichotomies that the reader may rely on to categorize her stories, in effect depicting a more nuanced China in which opposites work together. In "Aloeswood Incense," Chang uses folk tale elements to highlight the falseness of the world that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like "Aloeswood Incense," the story is introduced by the narrator inviting the reader to listen to his or her tale, as if the story is being told orally. This theme is reinforced later when the narrator switches from present– to past–tense, and cannot decide the age of the story's protagonist. In addition, the narrator observes that Chuanqing "[seems] to have dozed off" (79). This subjectivity of the narrator distances the reader from the story, but at the same time Chang's focus on Chuanqing's inner thoughts pulls the reader into his mind. The effect of these contrasting themes is that the reader is able to criticize Chuanqing's choices but also to empathize with him, reflecting a balance between the traditional judging of anyone who challenges the social order, as seen in Lu Xun's "Diary of a Madman," and the more modern exploration of the self as a reflection of the surrounding ... Let us assume that ten years ago you attended the funeral of an aunt of yours who you loved very much. During the funeral, they burnt incense as part of the ceremony. Saurer received his BA at Hope College in sculpture and drawing, he continued to earn his MFA at Colorado State University in sculpture, and has been teaching art at St. Olaf College since 1995 (Saurer). His current exhibit is called Across Tender Land and was inspired by Saurer's surroundings while growing up (Shadow Casting). On piece, in particular, caught my eye. His Shadow Casting sculpture is around 75 pieces of welded steel and charred wood composed into different shapes mounted on a wall. When I first saw this piece, I found it interesting, but as I got closer, sensored lights came on and caused each piece to cast a shadow on the wall behind the sculpture. This piece of art reminded me the incense burner that has been discussed in our book (Stokstad, 4–13). I was reminded of the incense burner that was found in Prince Liu Sheng's tomb in China. Each piece was created to be viewed with the help of an other medium; smoke and light. Shadow Casting becomes much more aesthetically pleasing when the light casts the shadow, just as the incense burner becomes more aesthetically pleasing when it is viewed with smoke swirling around the mountain peaks. Each one was adorned with a sigil representing their tribe hanging from a chain around their neck. The largest among them, however, wore no sigil. A Pair of Sensing Angels by Circle of Bernaert Orley are two 'one by three foot' oil painting on wood from 1535–1540 that depicts two angels. Presently it is located in Gallery 117 at the Art Gallery of Ontario. When observing "A Pair of Censing Angels" we can infer the subject, the value the painting held, and how the meaning alters in its present setting. This visual analysis observes the properties in A Pair of Sensing Angels and the response that these properties and the museum display has on the viewer. There are unifying factors that argue that these paintings are part of a collection together. Both angels are positioned upright in the vibrant blue sky, with their body fitting within the picture plane. They appear gentle and are viewed from straight on. The angels are equal sizes and almost mirror each other, except for an item in their hand and the placement of colours. These angels are adult sized females, wearing flowing clothing. They are both blond, wearing similar attire, and using similar colour pallets. The angel on the left is wearing a light pink dress with layers under of white and blue. The angel on the right is wearing "a velvet black robe" with layers under of pink according to the museum description. The clothes gently lift to give the illusion of floating. A lot of moulding and detail in the shadows are used to make the fabric look textured rather than flat. The drapery suggests an attempt at naturalism. There us a lot of details and darks and light in the material. There is a difference between the heavier material which falls down with less small crinkles, and the lighter material which is flowing against gravity. There is also a focus on detail on the incense containers. They have a lot of texture and strings on it. Light reflects from the metal, similar to how it reflects off the fabric of the dresses. The use of the incense swinging to the center, the wings, the similar paint colours and the similar physical features insists on a unison between these paintings. Angels are associated with religion. • 43. Angel Gabriel Looks At Mariana And Not Mary What is more interesting is that Angel Gabriel looks at Mariana and not Mary in the painting which suggests a hope, she wants her love to be consummated, a Gabriel to come to her and inform her but it intensifies the pathos even further."Mary" which in Hebrew means uncertainty, as she was uncertain whether she would be able to conceive until Gabriel arrived but "Mary" (uncertainty) + "Ann" (graceful) leads us to "Mariana" who is gracefully expecting even though she is uncertain about her destiny. The heraldry depicts snowdrop which represents consolation, according to floral symbolism. However, it is the flower associated with the ritual of St. Agnes' Eve, when adolescent girls hope for visionary glimpses of prospective husbands. These meta–representations projects the mental state of the subject sometimes through contrast and irony as well. We see an altar, a private devotional space so we have a sense of her life being taken up between prayer and meditation which in turn accentuates the theme of longing. The metallic objects add to the visual irony as a church like atmosphere of marriage is being created in Mariana's room which is never possible. Mariana still wears a waistband which can symbolise her hopes of conjugal bliss which is clearly visible against the deep hue of her dress. We look at formalist criticism and historical criticism, to see if there is anything that belong in either of those two categories. Writers also can also use different strategies in order to convey their thesis or themes. The non–fiction works that I have chosen are "Who Will Light the Incense When Mother's Gone?" by Andrew Lam and "On Going Home" by Joan Didion. I will discuss their theme and how Lam and Didion conveyed that theme into their work and for what purpose and to whom it was for. I will also discuss why it is considered a piece of non–fiction and how imagination plays a part in the selected stories. Who Will Light ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The illustration shows what looks like a deacon or priest holding the incense looking like he's waving across the table. But it is not the deacon but Christ. He explained that the deacon using the incense he become Christ and sees through smelling the incense connecting to the image above which is not two separate image but one, the image above being Jesus. The men watching the deacon is like them seeing Christ there the incest. Also, the image of the bells represented the hearing sense. People hearing the harmony of the church. • 51. Analyzing The Story 'Who Will Light Incense When Mothers... In the story "Who Will Light Incense When Mothers Gone?" the author has created multiple themes or ways to interpret the purpose behind the story. Lam says, "She turns 70 but she remains a vivacious woman – her hair is still mostly black, there is still a girlish twang in her laughter, and her eyes twinkle at the telling of a joke" (Lam). The way the author speaks about Mrs. Lam, using such vivid language shows that he takes time to appreciate the person she is and how she lights the room up. Showing so much attention to detail about someone can really show the love towards one another, thus allowing filial love to be an alternative theme of the story. Between the family moving to America and the mother asking of her God for her kids to prosper in America, this tells readers that the education system or dreams for a good career probably are not as advantageous as the opportunities in America. One of the biggest challenges in the Vietnam school system is that if a student has a question about something, they are not allowed to address the instructor unless called upon. If the student never gets called upon the student must than go back through the notes they took during class and find the answer. But what if the notes were not written down correctly? Than that student has just answered the question on the next test incorrectly because of inadequate communication of the school system. How is a Vietnam student supposed to have a reasonable career if the countries school system is failing them. However, just as the Lam family has done, moving to America will allow a strong and more improved education for a levelheaded career. This is also known to be considered the American Dream way of ... • 59. Life, Growth, And Separation Personally Relating to Themes I can personally relate to the theme for "Salvation." Although I do believe that Jesus is real, I have experienced a loss of my childlike innocence and faith in the belief that everything my elders tell me is the truth. For example, I am sure that most of us grew up with stories of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy, among others. As a child, I believed that these people were real. However, as I grew up I began to realize that these were just stories that our parents told us to make us behave. Additionally, I can relate to the theme of life, growth, and separation. At my age, I have had numerous human experiences that have added meaning to my life and made me see myself as an adult. Plus, I have experienced the separation of myself from my parents which has helped me to form my own beliefs and become my own person. I think that the intended purposes of this story and its theme are to persuade the audience to belief in these ideas, and for entertainment. I can also personally relate to the theme for "Who Will Burn Incense When Mothers Gone?". I have already addressed how I can relate to the theme of separation and growth. In addition, I have experienced a sense of loss of tradition in my family as I have grown older. As a child, I can clearly remember many traditions my family took part in. Therefore, we were interested if the essential oil could be used as a protective agent against termites as well. Furthermore, location and climatic conditions have an effect on the growth of a tree and its production of resin and essential oils. Therefore we wanted to establish if the oil from Uganda contains the same components as the oils obtained from other parts of Africa. In this study, the chemical composition of the essential oil from the resin of Ugandan Canarium was determined, and its anti–termitic activity was established. 2. Experimental procedures 2.1 Plant materials The resin of Canarium schweinfurthii was harvested from the bark of a mature tree in Sango bay and stored in a freezer. Termites used in the assay were Macrotermes bellicosus as these have been found to be the most destructive to wood and timber. Termites above the third instar were used. 2.2 Isolation of essential oils The essential oil was obtained by steam distillation of the resin (50g) for 4 hours. Daoism desires enhancement of the Dao, the way or path, within a person, which one achieves through education, meditation and rituals, and enhancement of the qi. Qi is the vital energy surrounding an area. Core concepts of Daoism are identifiable in the analysis of artwork from popular time periods of the belief system. The piece of art, referred to as hill shaped incense burner, crafted in 113 BCE was excavated in 1968 from the tomb of Prince Liu Sheng and Dou Wan (Neave 142). The visual elements of art used in the hill shaped incense burner visually represent Daoist beliefs identified in Lao Zi: The Book of Tao and Teh: the importance of mountains, behaving like water, and the simple natural way of life. The immortal's dwelling in the mountains, an important belief in religious Daoism, is seen in the large dimensions of the mountain's peak, vertical lines, detailed texture appearance, and smoke representing qi in the mountain's atmosphere. The other garden that is in the temple is the Vessel of Compassion for Universal Liberation. The main image in this garden is that of Avalofitesvara Bodhisattva.
