Corporate Social Responsibility And How Companies Like...
In this week's journal, the discussion focuses on corporate social responsibility and how companies
like Citibank, N.A. are managing to navigate its organizational culture to fully embrace it. In
addition, we will discuss potential right versus right as well as right versus wrong scenarios that
could emerge under my leadership. I worked for ten years and have written about various aspects of
the organization for several courses. Therefore, my knowledge of Citi's performance and history
continues to expand. Citi is quite adept at communicating its goals, vison and mission to its
employees as well as clients. All of which are considered stakeholders.

In the case of Citibank (aka Citi), corporate social responsibility is driving responsibility of its 2014
stakeholder engagement process. Citibank refers to it as its Citizenship policies and programs
(Citigroup, 2015).In the Citi Global Citizenship Report 2014; CEO Mike Corbat shared his view on
Citizenship. According to Corbat, "given the pace and scale of global challenges and opportunities,
from providing access to basic banking services for the two billion people who lack it, to training
the workforce of tomorrow, Citi has a unique capacity to support economic progress in the
communities where we operate around the world' (Citigroup, 2015, p.5). Founded within this three
element collective (invest, partner and act), there are five target areas; economies, cities, sustainable
growth, people and integrity (p.4). Citi identifies eight main groups as its stakeholders; clients and
customers, investors and Socially Responsible Investors (SRIs), employees, government and
regulators, suppliers, nongovernmental organizations, media and other financial institutions (p.70).
For this discussion, we will focus on four stakeholders.
Clients. Clients and customers are essential to Citi's success. Citi considers its clients and customers
as partners. They help to drive the business and client engagement. By actively engaging its
customers via social media and customer satisfaction surveys, Citi is working to rebuild

Smaller banks can compete successfully in segments where customer service or knowledge of the
local market is more important.
The competitors for this type of services are for the larger bank in UK like Barclays, Abbey, HSBC
etc. As opening the branch on airport is a first mover advantage policy but we cannot ignore the
above mentioned banks as even they provide services to their customers like foreign currency
exchange, 24 hours telephonic services, online facilities etc.

Citibank Law : A Financial Conglomerate Based On The...
INTRODUCTION
It was November 14th 2015, with the recent decline of the Euro and soaring price of the American
Dollar, Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) had to think about hedging their risk of currency due to
the volatility of the markets. Large MNEs were taking the biggest hit, precisely American–based law
firms with much European clientele. Citigroup, a financial conglomerate based in the New York.,
was one of those companies and felt particularly vulnerable with one of its subsidiary 's "Citibank
Law" also located in the United States. To address this concern, Citigroup headquarters called up
CEO of the Citi Private Bank Legal Advisory Services in the U.S., Mr. Art Vandalay. Art Vandalay
graduated from the University of Waterloo with an undergraduate in Architecture. With no luck on
attaining a job upon graduation, he decided to enroll in the MSc/CEMS MIM program at the
Richard Ivey School of Business in London, Ontario to make himself more marketable to various
architectural firms. This is where Art discovered his love for finance and decided not to follow his
original dream of becoming an architect but rather do something in the financial field. Upon
graduating from Ivey, he started his own financial advisory services firm called Vandalay Industries,
specializing in latex commodity trading. Vandalay Industries had minor successes until the global
financial recession that crushed his company. However, recruiters at Citigroup had been impressed
with Vandalay's knowledge

"Citibank Case Analysis"
Introduction: Through reading the article titled "Citibank: Performance Evaluation" and performing
my own in–depth case analysis, I was able to analyze the issues Citibank California was confronted
with and determine possible solutions to help run their business more successfully. Although
Citibank is a well–run corporation that made necessary improvements in an effort to gain a
competitive advantage over their main competitors, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, a main area
that needs improvement is clear: customer satisfaction. As Frits Seegers, President of Citibank
California, identified, without improving customer satisfaction, the extreme success ... Show more

In other words, "Citibank's strategy in California was to build a profitable franchise by providing
relationship banking combined with a high level of service to its customers" (p. 76). Like most
businesses, customers' expectations rose with their net worth, in addition to providing a greater
profit margin for the company itself. While financial measures typically were the way Citibank
measured success in the past, they recognized a need to measure customer service as well and thus
developed a Performance Scorecard. The six different types of measures the Performance Scorecard
evaluated were: financial measures, strategy implementation, customer satisfaction, control, people,
and standards. By developing this Performance Scorecard, Citibank believed they could better
analyze where each branch needed specific improvements and where each branch was excelling.
Citibank felt it was necessary to update the previous evaluations to include non–financial measures
because they recognized that these measures may in fact be more critical to the long term success of
the franchise. As a result, by adding the non–financial measures to the current measures, Citibank
was able to reflect competitive dimensions in the bank's strategy.
Citibank Issues: After performing an evaluation using the Performance Scorecard, Seegers
recognized the need for increased customer service at their most important branch. Through their
measurements of customer satisfaction,

Analysis Of The Best Consumer Digital Bank
Banamex
Banamex is the second largest bank in Mexico and was named the best consumer digital bank in
2015 by Global Finance. Banamex serves over 21 million customers at over 1700 branches and
around 5,000 ATM's in Mexico and the United States.
Banamex was founded in 1884 when the Banco Nacional Mexicano and the Banco Mercantil
Mexicano merged. These two banks had only been in business for two years when they decided to
form Banamex. In 1926, the bank reorganized and became a financing bank. Over the next 46 years,
Banamex introduced savings accounts (1929), personal credit lines (1958), credit cards (1968), and
ATM banking (1972) to the Mexican market. From 1982 until 1991 Banamex was operated as a
government owned national credit association. In 1991, Banamex restored its private control of the
company and began to step into the groundbreaking idea of expanding private credit. Banamex
along with many other private banks were very inexperienced in this area and they lacked
regulation. This behavior over the next four years, combined with the devaluation of the Mexican
peso, an increase in domestic rates, and a measurable economic recession caused Banamex to almost
go into bankruptcy in late 1994. The Ernesto Zedillo administration stepped in with government
funds that attracted shareholders to put new equity into Banamex This was achieved by the
shareholders buying loans, that were in default, at a 2 to 1 ratio and in return they would receive

Customers are becoming more demanding and critical when not having their expectations met. It is
important company adjusts to the ever changing attitudes and expectation of customers in the market
place. Therefore it is a must for company to satisfy their customers. Customers' satisfaction is the
key to the success of any company. James McGaran is the manager in the Financial District office at

highest revenue and made the greatest margin contribution to the business of any branch in the
system" (Harvard Business School. 1997, pg. 4). In addition, James has managed to delivered
impressive financial results for four years in a row.
Weakness
I would explain to James I am concern about his below par in customer satisfaction. I understand his
"branch is the largest and toughest branch in the division and he has demanding clientele,
challenging competition and sometimes it can be difficult to manager such a diverse set of
indicators" (Harvard Business School. 1997, pg. 4). I would give James a chance to comment and
voice his concern. I would discuss how valuable the customers are to the company and customer
satisfaction is the key to the long term success of his division and our company future. I would also
explain, I have outlined the company's performance expectations and we missed a couple of targets.
I will ask James what problem or concerns he has and what he thinks is interfering with customer
services. James and I will review them together and come up with an action plan for improvement.
This will ensure James that I am working with him and not against him.
Career progress I would inform James his career is on the right path and the company knows he is a

Case Study Of Citibank
Should Citibank launch the card product? Yes – If Citibank is striving to reach its goal of achieving
$100 million in earnings by 1990, introducing a credit card into the Asia–Pacific market would be
an effective means of achieving this goal. The case for launching the card product can be made
based on a few reasons. First, as can be seen in the information presented in Exhibit 4, many of the
countries Citibank is considering launching in have fairly high projected growth rates (with some as
high as 8 and 9 percent). Another reason that promotes the case for Citibank's card launch is the fact
that there is a fairly low penetration of credit cards in the existing markets, as can be seen in the data
presented in exhibit 8 of the case. This is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

certainly supports being able to launch a card product. The amount of each market that has yet to be
reached was calculated based on the ratio of the number of card holders to the relevant market size,
and each country's yet–to–be–reached market (i.e. untapped market) shows that Citibank could

Case Study Of Citibank : Performance Evaluation
Case Study of Citibank: Performance Evaluation Introduction Performance evaluations are
important parts of all employees and managers tools to ensure positive actions are rewarded while
negative actions can be evaluated and fixed to decrease problems in the future. Performance
evaluations benefit supervisors and employees by identifying how to bring out the employees best
attributes for the company (Hamlett, nd.). Evaluations provide a look at how a worker is doing
compared to earlier reviews of their skill, knowledge, initiative and participation in the company's
vision (Hamlett, nd.). Introducing performance review evaluations is important to most
organizations for the success of their organization and the advancement of its employees.
Performance evaluations provide a way for managers and supervisors to manage the performance of
an organization and the people who make of the human resources of the organization (McCarroll,
nd.). When implementing a new system, it is important to understand the process must be realistic,
challenging, yet attainable for performance expectations and standards to be successful for
employees and the organization (McCarroll, nd.). Balanced scorecards are utilized in performance
evaluations to essentially provide a way for organizations to align their strategic plans with day to
day operations (Balanced Scorecard Institute, 2015). Balanced scorecards look at traditional
financial measures, which are past events and long–term investments like

Citibank: Performance Evaluation
Frits Seegers, President of Citibank California, was meeting with his management team to review
the performance evaluation and bonus decisions for the California branch managers. James
McGaran 's performance evaluation was next. Frits felt uneasy about this one. McGaran was
manager of the most important branch in the Los Angeles area, and his financials were impressive. A

Citibank 's strategy in California was to build a profitable franchise by providing relationship
banking combined with a high level of service to its customers. Service was delivered face to face
(in the branch) or remotely, depending on the wishes of the customers. Customers' service
expectations rose in line with their net worth, as did their profitability for the bank. These customers
demanded high levels of service with careful personal attention and a broad selection of financial
products. Citibank provided a broad array of services including a dense network of ATM machines,
24 hour banking, and home banking. Financial measures had dominated Citibank 's performance
evaluation in the past. But top managers in the division felt that these measures were poor vehicles
to communicate the high service strategy of the bank. Frits Seegers wanted people in the division to
have a broader view of the business and focus their attention on those dimensions that were critical
to the long term success of the franchise. To reflect the importance of non–financial measures as
leading indicators of strategy implementation, the California Division developed a Performance
Scorecard. It complemented existing financial measures with new measures reflecting important
competitive dimensions in the bank's strategy. The initial version was pre–tested in 1995 and,
starting in the first quarter of 1996, Performance Scorecard goals and performance data became a

and always exceeds expectations.
Standards: Above Par James is a well respected leader that has high standards for himself and people
he employs. He continually works on improving himself and his employees. He is involved in the
community and encourages the same from his employees.
Customer Satisfaction: Below Par This is a measure that can potentially cause the most controversy
as James is concerned with the survey that is used to asses customer satisfaction. In two quarters,
James scored below par on customer satisfaction. However, he identified the improvement
opportunities and substantially improved service by scores the end of the year.
Overall Evaluation: Above Par we understand that according to current policy James cannot get an
above par overall rating due to a below par score on the customer satisfaction measure. However, we
will disregard the policy in this case due to several reasons: This is the first year the balanced
scorecard was implemented. It will take some time to insure that all the areas are measured
appropriately. James concerns about adequacy of the survey used to measure customer satisfaction
might be valid. Management should review the survey and get some input from the branch managers
on what indicators should be used to measure customer satisfaction. The current review process

(agreements between Fiat S.p.A. and Treno Alta Velocità – T.A.V. S.p.A.), which is measured by
applying the percentage of completion to the total contractual value of the work, to royalties for the
use of the Fiat trademark, calculated as a percentage of the revenues generated by the Group
companies that use it, and the services of executives at the principal companies of the
Group. The increase from 2005 is mainly attributable to higher charges for the use of the trademark.

includes types of accounts and services that are available to Citibank's customers. Accounts include
checking and different savings options which can then be pulled down to reveal even more options.
The checking tab has four different types that are geared toward four different categories of
customer, and some specialty accounts. These are named basic checking, the Citibank account,
Citigold interest checking the Citibank student account, and there have even been accounts started
specifically with women in mind (Yadav, 2004). All of the other banking options offer similar pull
down menus which give the customer a variety of options and details what the various options
entail. Under the credit cards tab the company helps the customer choose what type of card they
want by asking them to answer some questions first. The borrower is asked what type of card they
are looking for, what financial options they want and what rewards the individual desires. All of this
is to help choose the appropriate card for the particular customer. The tabs across the top of the page

China And Its Regulation System
Despite what many people think, China and its regulation system (limited market access) had made
it difficult for foreign banks to provide their services. For instance, foreign banks were licensed to
provide corporate banking service only to foreign–invested enterprises. Few licensed braches were
allowed to operate as foreign banks. Indeed, foreign banks need licenses from central bank.
However, the bankÂŽs senior knew this would be a slow process since the China state banks were
usually run by bureaucrats and unable to set their own deposits and interest rate level.
Citibank and its competitive advantages rely on its unique strategy to exclude any type of joint
venture. In 1997, a wide range of potential new services included credit ... Show more content on

Notwithstanding their success with this new system, Citigroup executives were not interested in the

A differentiating product would present a decent growth opportunity for Citibank. 3.2 Countries not
to Enter for Now India – With 80% rural population, personal income of majority Indians may be
too low to meet the minimum income requirement for credit cards. With poor infrastructure,
extremely low card penetration rate, limited merchant acceptance and heavily regulated foreign
exchange transactions, it is not yet a good time to enter. Citibank should target markets that already
have high growth potential, less income inequality and also a high rate of literacy. Philippines – It is
still underdeveloped with weak local infrastructure to support the credit card business. With a D
rating for political environment, the country has high political and economic risk. Singapore and
Australia – Both markets are rather saturated. Citibank currently does not hold any competitive
advantage and is facing strong competition from both international and local players. Hong Kong
and Korea – Citibank has been managing Diners Club business in both markets. We recommend
Citibank to focus on improving the current customer service quality, deepening its relationship with
these customers before introducing its credit card business. 4.0 Convincing Country Managers in

My Career With Citibank And Before Entering Banking Industry
It's a world of globalization and this has been made possible because companies have started to
understand the importance of business intelligence and analytics to attain their long term goals and
better understanding of expected future revenues. Being a banker, I realized that all the transactions
which used to happen manually, are now, done automatically. For example, cash deposit, cash
withdrawal, online banking, mobile banking etc are just a click away. Customers are not required to
visit the branch, stand in a queue and wait for their turn to come for the transactions. I started my

Citibank: Performance Evaluation Essay
JoĂŁo Paulo Coelho (BOAH 2401) October 04, 2010
Citibank: Performance Evaluation
In 1996, Citibank was an emergent banking institution attempting to increase its market share in the
competitive Los Angeles area. In order to do so, the bank's strategy was to focus slightly less on
their financial growth, and much more on providing "a high level of service to its customers".
Management viewed this paradigm shift as "critical to the long term success of the franchise".
To implement these changes, a new Citibank employee performance assessment scorecard was
created, briefly tested and quickly implemented. Though I believe it was a much improved and
broader way to gauge individual performance, there was certainly room ... Show more content on

For Citibank this measure was helpful in assessing the level of awareness and involvement of the
managers with compliance problems.
Customer Satisfaction
The most ambiguous and subjective measure on the scorecard, happens to be highly regarded by
Citibank leadership as a vital gauge of the long term success of the organization.
I look at this measure as having 2 very distinct elements. In the telephone survey previously
mentioned, there were questions regarding services provided at the actual branch, and questions
concerning other Citibank services such as 24 hours phone banking and ATM services. I believe
questions pertaining services offered at the branch belong with the Strategy Implementation
measures, as management clearly stated customer service as a top priority and the branch managers'
actions should be closely linked to services provided at their own local office. All other questions,
ones related to additional Citibank services and seemingly out of a branch manager's control, should
be eliminated from their performance scorecard.
Under the current format, there is information that I deem crucial to making this decision that is not
provided with the case study. Being that this Customer Satisfaction measure is new in the
assessment scorecard (which was only briefly tested before being implemented) I would like

Without passage of financial modernization legislation, under existing law Citiwould have to divest
its insurance–underwriting activities within two years of the merger (under certain circumstances
this divestiture period could be extended for up to an additional three years). Interestingly, no such
requirement applies to its securities business. When the proposed merger of the Travelers Group
financial giant and banking's Citicorp was announced in April 1998, the news stunned the financial

Financial Analysis:
The financial analysis further support my recommendation to launch the operation. The company

These are the groups with income between 12,500–25,000 and above 25,000 and which totaled to 65

as a stutus symbol and value product. The third group(6000–12500) with 58 mellion population is
also of interest and has the potential to become Citibank 's cardholders later on. According to the
data that Citibank has collected its credit card customers in Honk Kong with these levels of income
contribute annual revenue of approximately $200 and $250 respecively (Table B). In addition, the

South Dakota Financing Case Study
In the financing market, there is an important need to balance the powers between lenders and
borrowers. In this market, the borrowers are in a relatively weak position to negotiate the interest
rates of their loans, being the party in need. Lenders, in accordance to the law of supply and
demand, can strategically withhold money supply to increase demand and interest rates. Historically,
government regulators ensured, through usury laws, that consumers were protected against financial
predators (Bowsher, 1974). However, the current trend in the financing market has moved steadily
towards loosening the usury laws and allowing the markets to dictate interest rates. This paper will
attempt to understand this trend through a series of six questions and answers.
1. What is the main purpose of the usury law? Short answer: The main purpose of the usury law is to
protect borrowers from excessively high lending interest rates. Norman Bowsher of the Federal
Reserve Bank ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why did South Dakota decide to eliminate the cap on interest rates? Short answer: South Dakota
decided to eliminate the cap on interest rates because it is not keeping up with the increasing costs of
money and the interest cap in the state is lower than the national interest rate. In 1979, the 9–
percent–range mortgage loan rates had been increasing to 9.75 percent. Short–term rates moved up
faster (Hajek, 2004). However, the lending rates, capped by usury laws, were trailing the rapidly
rising money costs nationwide. This is the time when the Federal Reserve Regulation Q had been
phasing out and Chairman Paul Volcker decided to let the rates float on supply–and–demand forces.
The South Dakota Bankers Association Legislative Committee (SDBALC) believed that eliminating
the lending rate cap would let it loose to keep up with the increasing money costs. The approach was
not to remove the usury law (a complex legislative move), but to gain exemption from the usury law
for regulated institutions (e.g.

The Secret History of the Credit Card Essay
The Secret History of the Credit Card
1. What is the main purpose of a usury law? Be specific.
The purpose of usury laws was to regulate the maximum interest rates of loans. This law was
created to protect borrowers from excessively high interest rates. It insured that lenders could not
put the borrower in a situation where they were not able to fully pay off their debt. However, as said
on investopedia.com, "In the United States, individual states are responsible for setting their own
usury laws." 2. Why did South Dakota decide to eliminate its cap on interest rates?
South Dakota use to have very strict laws on the amount a lender could charge a borrower. Interest
rate charges were highly regulated and because of this banks ... Show more content on

Citibank brought in hundreds of white collar jobs. Citibank is now the largest employer in the entire
state. Citibank turned the credit card business, which before was losing money, into an immensely
profitable business. As stated in the frontline article, "the unlikely state of South Dakota became the
place where America's credit card industry first began to really take off".
5. In the Citibank example, how did Citi use existing laws to alter its business mode?
The usury laws in New York were putting Citibank under. The bank lost over one million dollars on
its audacious foray from credit cards because the inflation rate went beyond the amount of interest
they were allowed to charge customers. It did not look good for Citibank so they needed to make
quick changes. Since the usury laws in New York were what was holding them back they went to
South Dakota, where there were no usury laws, hoping for a new start. The change in location was
everything they needed to get back on track and make profit off the credit card business. 6. What
was the underlying basis of the Marquette Bank decision?
The Marquette Bank decision was a U.S. Supreme Court decision ruling that a bank could export its
interest rate to another state. This meant that a bank could move its headquarters to a state with no
usury laws and offer loans with high interest rates to other states. This is what really sparked

Citibank: Performance Evaluation
CASE
"Citibank: Performance Evaluation"
Harvard Business School 9–198–048 rev: October 14, 1999
The Performance Scorecard: a strategic management tool
Frits Seegers, President of Citibank California, is convinced that "in a competitive marketplace
where businesses compete for customers, customer satisfaction is seen as a key differentiator and
increasingly has become a key element of business strategy"1. Fulfilling customers' expectations is a
critical issue for the long term business sustainability and profitability. This realization is what
underlies the decision of the top management to develop and complete the former Citibank's

James is consciously making efforts to improve service results14. I left a blank for customer
satisfaction in James' performance scorecard (cf. attachment 1) since I think the score scale does not
reflect James involvement and implication and as James' supervisor I am partly responsible for that
since it is my job to provide him some support. And I need to keep him fully dedicated to his job; he
is my, our, best branch manager. I know that all the six targeted measures are interrelated and the
global rating have to be consistent. But if we cannot introduce some flexibility in the bonus rules I
am afraid that we can lose James and that will be a significant loss for our company and for its
future. Customer satisfaction is a corporate teamwork responsibility not an individual matter. Be
careful to not create a misunderstanding "on the folly of blaming A, while hoping for B"15. The
Performance Scorecard shall remain a tool not a blind judge.
Why to build a more flexible and more effective Balanced Scorecard
I think the balanced scorecard should be implemented to all of Citibank since it establishes a "sense
of urgency"16 about competitive realities to all employees. But I would like to suggest some
changes in it for 1997. Indeed, since everyone in the top management agree that James is an

with Mr. Gibson and negotiate a better budget based on further information of the current
conditions. Last option would be to reject the proposed budget and continue pursuing the current
budget. This method may cause problems between management and is not favorable.
4. Mr. Gibson needs to set up meetings among subordinate managers and take into consideration
more factors, such as sovereign and return risks, market conditions, and employee turnover ratios, to
appropriately allocate the $4 million. Managers need to communicate at all levels in order gain
insight of all the aspects of the situation through several discussions and negotiations. Mr. Mistri and
other country managers should be been given a chance to give their feedback on the newly purposed
budget. In this way, a more informative budget can be processed that better represents future

Romanelli Vs Citibank Summary
Case Study for Romanelli v. Citibank Christine A. Adams Liberty University Online Case Study for
Romanelli v. Citibank Case Details In Romanelli v. Citibank, Romanelli sued Citibank over claims
of negligence following the embezzlement of money by Schor, Romanelli's financial advisor.
Romanelli contended that Citibank was liable for allowing Schor's actions. Both the New York trial
court and New York appellate court found in favor of Citibank, stating that Romanelli was liable for
Schor's actions since Schor was Romanelli's agent (Melvin & Katz, 2015, p.321). Observations
Legal Issues The main legal issues in Romanelli v. Citibank are agency laws and whether a principle

While it is true that Romanelli told Schor not to open the account, Romanelli's actions would imply
that Schor did have authority to act on Romanelli's behalf. Romanelli gave Schor authority to
conduct business for him when he "hired Schor as his accountant and financial adviser" (Melvin &
Katz, 2015, p.321). Schor was also given a corporate resolution that gives someone the authority "to
act on behalf of the corporation" (Investopedia, 2015). It is unknown what the corporate resolution
was for, but since Romanelli had given it to Schor along with other documents pertaining to the
opening of a bank account, it is safe to assume that it had to do with giving Schor authority to open
the account on Romanelli's behalf. Even though Schor was told not to open the account, he can
claim that he had been given authority at one time to open it. Although Romanelli did not win his
case against Citibank, he does have a couple of remedies against Schor. These include the ability to
seek damages from Schor for the amount that Schor had embezzled. Romanelli could also fire Schor
for breach of duty.

How Citibank Is Managing Corporate Social Responsibility

  • 1. Corporate Social Responsibility And How Companies Like... In this week's journal, the discussion focuses on corporate social responsibility and how companies like Citibank, N.A. are managing to navigate its organizational culture to fully embrace it. In addition, we will discuss potential right versus right as well as right versus wrong scenarios that could emerge under my leadership. I worked for ten years and have written about various aspects of the organization for several courses. Therefore, my knowledge of Citi's performance and history continues to expand. Citi is quite adept at communicating its goals, vison and mission to its employees as well as clients. All of which are considered stakeholders. • 14. Citibank Law : A Financial Conglomerate Based On The... INTRODUCTION It was November 14th 2015, with the recent decline of the Euro and soaring price of the American Dollar, Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) had to think about hedging their risk of currency due to the volatility of the markets. Large MNEs were taking the biggest hit, precisely American–based law firms with much European clientele. Citigroup, a financial conglomerate based in the New York., was one of those companies and felt particularly vulnerable with one of its subsidiary 's "Citibank Law" also located in the United States. To address this concern, Citigroup headquarters called up CEO of the Citi Private Bank Legal Advisory Services in the U.S., Mr. Art Vandalay. Art Vandalay graduated from the University of Waterloo with an undergraduate in Architecture. With no luck on attaining a job upon graduation, he decided to enroll in the MSc/CEMS MIM program at the Richard Ivey School of Business in London, Ontario to make himself more marketable to various architectural firms. This is where Art discovered his love for finance and decided not to follow his original dream of becoming an architect but rather do something in the financial field. Upon graduating from Ivey, he started his own financial advisory services firm called Vandalay Industries, specializing in latex commodity trading. Vandalay Industries had minor successes until the global financial recession that crushed his company. However, recruiters at Citigroup had been impressed with Vandalay's knowledge ... Citibank Case Analysis Essay Kristin Howell Bus 400 Sec A Dr. Li 30 October 2007 "Citibank Case Analysis" Introduction: Through reading the article titled "Citibank: Performance Evaluation" and performing my own in–depth case analysis, I was able to analyze the issues Citibank California was confronted with and determine possible solutions to help run their business more successfully. Although Citibank is a well–run corporation that made necessary improvements in an effort to gain a competitive advantage over their main competitors, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, a main area that needs improvement is clear: customer satisfaction. As Frits Seegers, President of Citibank California, identified, without improving customer satisfaction, the extreme success ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, "Citibank's strategy in California was to build a profitable franchise by providing relationship banking combined with a high level of service to its customers" (p. 76). Like most businesses, customers' expectations rose with their net worth, in addition to providing a greater profit margin for the company itself. While financial measures typically were the way Citibank measured success in the past, they recognized a need to measure customer service as well and thus developed a Performance Scorecard. The six different types of measures the Performance Scorecard evaluated were: financial measures, strategy implementation, customer satisfaction, control, people, and standards. By developing this Performance Scorecard, Citibank believed they could better analyze where each branch needed specific improvements and where each branch was excelling. Citibank felt it was necessary to update the previous evaluations to include non–financial measures because they recognized that these measures may in fact be more critical to the long term success of the franchise. As a result, by adding the non–financial measures to the current measures, Citibank was able to reflect competitive dimensions in the bank's strategy. Citibank Issues: After performing an evaluation using the Performance Scorecard, Seegers recognized the need for increased customer service at their most important branch. Banamex serves over 21 million customers at over 1700 branches and around 5,000 ATM's in Mexico and the United States. Banamex was founded in 1884 when the Banco Nacional Mexicano and the Banco Mercantil Mexicano merged. These two banks had only been in business for two years when they decided to form Banamex. In 1926, the bank reorganized and became a financing bank. Over the next 46 years, Banamex introduced savings accounts (1929), personal credit lines (1958), credit cards (1968), and ATM banking (1972) to the Mexican market. From 1982 until 1991 Banamex was operated as a government owned national credit association. In 1991, Banamex restored its private control of the company and began to step into the groundbreaking idea of expanding private credit. Banamex along with many other private banks were very inexperienced in this area and they lacked regulation. This behavior over the next four years, combined with the devaluation of the Mexican peso, an increase in domestic rates, and a measurable economic recession caused Banamex to almost go into bankruptcy in late 1994. The Ernesto Zedillo administration stepped in with government funds that attracted shareholders to put new equity into Banamex This was achieved by the shareholders buying loans, that were in default, at a 2 to 1 ratio and in return they would receive ... • 30. Case Study Of Citibank Should Citibank launch the card product? Yes – If Citibank is striving to reach its goal of achieving $100 million in earnings by 1990, introducing a credit card into the Asia–Pacific market would be an effective means of achieving this goal. The case for launching the card product can be made based on a few reasons. First, as can be seen in the information presented in Exhibit 4, many of the countries Citibank is considering launching in have fairly high projected growth rates (with some as high as 8 and 9 percent). Another reason that promotes the case for Citibank's card launch is the fact that there is a fairly low penetration of credit cards in the existing markets, as can be seen in the data presented in exhibit 8 of the case. The amount of each market that has yet to be reached was calculated based on the ratio of the number of card holders to the relevant market size, and each country's yet–to–be–reached market (i.e. untapped market) shows that Citibank could fairly easily hit its estimated break–even point if it were to enter these ... October 14, 1999 Citibank: Performance Evaluation Frits Seegers, President of Citibank California, was meeting with his management team to review the performance evaluation and bonus decisions for the California branch managers. James McGaran 's performance evaluation was next. Frits felt uneasy about this one. McGaran was manager of the most important branch in the Los Angeles area, and his financials were impressive. Among ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Citibank 's strategy in California was to build a profitable franchise by providing relationship banking combined with a high level of service to its customers. Service was delivered face to face (in the branch) or remotely, depending on the wishes of the customers. Customers' service expectations rose in line with their net worth, as did their profitability for the bank. These customers demanded high levels of service with careful personal attention and a broad selection of financial products. Citibank provided a broad array of services including a dense network of ATM machines, 24 hour banking, and home banking. Financial measures had dominated Citibank 's performance evaluation in the past. But top managers in the division felt that these measures were poor vehicles to communicate the high service strategy of the bank. Frits Seegers wanted people in the division to have a broader view of the business and focus their attention on those dimensions that were critical to the long term success of the franchise. To reflect the importance of non–financial measures as leading indicators of strategy implementation, the California Division developed a Performance Scorecard. It complemented existing financial measures with new measures reflecting important competitive dimensions in the bank's strategy. The initial version was pre–tested in 1995 and, starting in the first quarter of 1996, Performance Scorecard goals and performance data became a central ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With poor infrastructure, extremely low card penetration rate, limited merchant acceptance and heavily regulated foreign exchange transactions, it is not yet a good time to enter. Citibank should target markets that already have high growth potential, less income inequality and also a high rate of literacy. Philippines – It is still underdeveloped with weak local infrastructure to support the credit card business. With a D rating for political environment, the country has high political and economic risk. Singapore and Australia – Both markets are rather saturated. Citibank currently does not hold any competitive advantage and is facing strong competition from both international and local players. Hong Kong and Korea – Citibank has been managing Diners Club business in both markets. My Career With Citibank And Before Entering Banking Industry It's a world of globalization and this has been made possible because companies have started to understand the importance of business intelligence and analytics to attain their long term goals and better understanding of expected future revenues. Being a banker, I realized that all the transactions which used to happen manually, are now, done automatically. Customers are not required to visit the branch, stand in a queue and wait for their turn to come for the transactions. Citibank: Performance Evaluation Essay JoĂŁo Paulo Coelho (BOAH 2401) October 04, 2010 Citibank: Performance Evaluation In 1996, Citibank was an emergent banking institution attempting to increase its market share in the competitive Los Angeles area. In order to do so, the bank's strategy was to focus slightly less on their financial growth, and much more on providing "a high level of service to its customers". Management viewed this paradigm shift as "critical to the long term success of the franchise". To implement these changes, a new Citibank employee performance assessment scorecard was created, briefly tested and quickly implemented. For Citibank this measure was helpful in assessing the level of awareness and involvement of the managers with compliance problems. Customer Satisfaction The most ambiguous and subjective measure on the scorecard, happens to be highly regarded by Citibank leadership as a vital gauge of the long term success of the organization. I look at this measure as having 2 very distinct elements. In the telephone survey previously mentioned, there were questions regarding services provided at the actual branch, and questions concerning other Citibank services such as 24 hours phone banking and ATM services. I believe questions pertaining services offered at the branch belong with the Strategy Implementation measures, as management clearly stated customer service as a top priority and the branch managers' actions should be closely linked to services provided at their own local office. All other questions, ones related to additional Citibank services and seemingly out of a branch manager's control, should be eliminated from their performance scorecard. Under the current format, there is information that I deem crucial to making this decision that is not provided with the case study. Being that this Customer Satisfaction measure is new in the assessment scorecard (which was only briefly tested before being implemented) I would like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When the proposed merger of the Travelers Group financial giant and banking's Citicorp was announced in April 1998, the news stunned the financial industry; involving some $76 billion in stock, it was at the time the largest merger in history. For Wall Street's latest superstar, Travelers chairman and CEO Sanford "Sandy" Weill, not only was the merger a step closer to the creation of the huge international diversified financial services institution he had been dreaming about for over a decade, but its audacity and risk was in step with Weill's reputation as a corporate visionary who was as savvy as he was fearless2. • 114. South Dakota Financing Case Study In the financing market, there is an important need to balance the powers between lenders and borrowers. In this market, the borrowers are in a relatively weak position to negotiate the interest rates of their loans, being the party in need. Lenders, in accordance to the law of supply and demand, can strategically withhold money supply to increase demand and interest rates. Historically, government regulators ensured, through usury laws, that consumers were protected against financial predators (Bowsher, 1974). However, the current trend in the financing market has moved steadily towards loosening the usury laws and allowing the markets to dictate interest rates. This paper will attempt to understand this trend through a series of six questions and answers. 1. What is the main purpose of the usury law? Short answer: The main purpose of the usury law is to protect borrowers from excessively high lending interest rates. Norman Bowsher of the Federal Reserve Bank ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why did South Dakota decide to eliminate the cap on interest rates? Short answer: South Dakota decided to eliminate the cap on interest rates because it is not keeping up with the increasing costs of money and the interest cap in the state is lower than the national interest rate. In 1979, the 9– percent–range mortgage loan rates had been increasing to 9.75 percent. Short–term rates moved up faster (Hajek, 2004). However, the lending rates, capped by usury laws, were trailing the rapidly rising money costs nationwide. This is the time when the Federal Reserve Regulation Q had been phasing out and Chairman Paul Volcker decided to let the rates float on supply–and–demand forces. The South Dakota Bankers Association Legislative Committee (SDBALC) believed that eliminating the lending rate cap would let it loose to keep up with the increasing money costs. The approach was not to remove the usury law (a complex legislative move), but to gain exemption from the usury law for regulated institutions (e.g. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 122. The Secret History of the Credit Card Essay The Secret History of the Credit Card 1. What is the main purpose of a usury law? Be specific. The purpose of usury laws was to regulate the maximum interest rates of loans. This law was created to protect borrowers from excessively high interest rates. It insured that lenders could not put the borrower in a situation where they were not able to fully pay off their debt. However, as said on investopedia.com, "In the United States, individual states are responsible for setting their own usury laws." 2. Why did South Dakota decide to eliminate its cap on interest rates? South Dakota use to have very strict laws on the amount a lender could charge a borrower. Interest rate charges were highly regulated and because of this banks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Citibank brought in hundreds of white collar jobs. Citibank is now the largest employer in the entire state. Citibank turned the credit card business, which before was losing money, into an immensely profitable business. As stated in the frontline article, "the unlikely state of South Dakota became the place where America's credit card industry first began to really take off". 5. In the Citibank example, how did Citi use existing laws to alter its business mode? The usury laws in New York were putting Citibank under. The bank lost over one million dollars on its audacious foray from credit cards because the inflation rate went beyond the amount of interest they were allowed to charge customers. It did not look good for Citibank so they needed to make quick changes. Since the usury laws in New York were what was holding them back they went to South Dakota, where there were no usury laws, hoping for a new start. The change in location was everything they needed to get back on track and make profit off the credit card business. 6. What was the underlying basis of the Marquette Bank decision? The Marquette Bank decision was a U.S. Supreme Court decision ruling that a bank could export its interest rate to another state. This meant that a bank could move its headquarters to a state with no usury laws and offer loans with high interest rates to other states. This is what really sparked Cikitibank's ...
