Five years ago when kyle came to the united states, he had been studying English
grammar. He had some fluency in English at that time. He arrived with basic English skills from
his bilingual elementary school. He was in 6th grade. However when he enrolled in middle
school, he took esl which prepared him for his higher academic courses. With hard work and a
lot of esl support from the esl teachers, he had a great success in school. An esl teacher must
teach and support esl students with different levels of English, including newcomers from other
countries, assist them to adapt to the America culture, and help them get passing grades in all
other subject areas. The esl teacher’s job is rewarding but also challenging.
Esl means English as a second language, and it is a program created to teach students
who move from their countries to no matter where, to have a life in the united states. Esl
programs are essential for high school immigrant students who lack English language
proficiency and want to graduate. The esl teacher must have a lot of preparation and training to
accomplish this task. There are different levels of English and that’s the reason why esl teachers
must prepare themselves to take classify courses and classes. For example, the minimum
requirement is college degree and esl certification. However there are many requirements needed
to become an esl teacher.
To become an esl teacher requires at least four year of preparation. A person first must get a
bachelor’s degree. Next the graduate must get certified to teach esl by completing an esl training
program. (How) for example, a teacher with a B.A in English will need an additional 18 hours of
course work to be certified to teach esl, or another option is getting a masters in esl, but that
usually requires two years of study after college.(Massenburg)

An esl teacher’s education and experience are broad. “Typically they study English
grammar, linguistics, teaching methods, acculturation of immigration, and history of immigration
in the United States”. (How) speaking other languages and travel can be helpful because esl
teachers must prepare themselves to address the needs of students from diverse cultures and
different languages. There are different kinds of languages all over the wide world, and esl
teachers have to help students with a different language adapt to a new language. These special
students have to learn English as a second language eve though some students already know
more than one language. There are many ways to encourage esl students to do well, by giving
them more time to accomplish tasks, build the work onto their experience, give the students
guidance with their work and check on each student to provide individual help, and help students
with mistakes things they don’t understand or find difficult to do and with self-confidence
towards school.
According to Ms. Mc nulty the things she like about her job are working and
assisting high school students helping them to learn new skills such as writing, speaking, reading
and listening. Teaching newcomers from other countries is a very challenging job, but this is a
process in which students get help from teachers to adapt to a new language and culture.
Teachers prepare themselves by researching esl teacher careers duties and education, learn a
second language, pursue a bachelor’s degree, earn credentials, and continue the education. It is
regulated process of studies and a vary of things that you as an esl teacher can do to improve
their understanding, this is a concrete establishment were an esl teacher acquires the necessary

classes you don’t understand. Esl teachers usually have a background in another subject and are
licensed teachers. Esl teachers are experienced teachers who specialize in esl to help students in
many ways so that they can understand the language. Esl students are encouraged to ask for help
in other classes like English, science, math and social studies. Esl teachers are always there to
help to provide the necessary tools for you to be successful. The things you don’t understand the
esl teachers find the way for you to understand, if you have problems in any subject in any
subject they are always there available to work hard to make you understand and bring it to your
knowledge. Esl teachers make sure you have everything you need to adapt well in a new school
and in a new country, it’s not easy but not impossible with hard work and dedication from the
students and esl teachers giving them support everything will fall in place and things will be start
getting easy as time goes. Some examples of best practices are: cooperative learning centers,
social equity groups, positive interactions between teachers and students and a variety of
techniques with different learning levels and styles. Esl teachers provide the necessary
modifications to help esl students with their classes like giving them a separate room for testing
also provide a dictionary with their culture language having more time to accomplish task. Been
an esl teacher its hard there are many ups and downs doing this job working with students but it
takes more than a fall to let your dream and stop helping esl students. Having the opportunity to
help your culture with the knowledge you have gain is a great job helping the students that really
want to succeed in life seen them working with a great potential knowing that not always what
they do is right but that’s why esl teachers are there for to help them feel that everything they did
is not wrong but just details to make it better.
In conclusion there are many advantages and disadvantages been an esl teacher,
some of the advantages are gaining confidence talking with students, building patience doing

your everyday duty, you travel a lot around the world for free, everyday there is something new
and interesting, some of the disadvantages are that work load varies you may have a load class,
been lonely away from your family for a period of time, it’s hard to save money and you don’t
get pay a lot. There are many good and bad things about becoming an esl teacher. There are
many advantages to doing this because it helps people, teenagers, boys and girls in our society to
improve and learn in many different programs and facilities.it brings advantages it also bring
disadvantages, like low salary and been lonely away from your family. It doesn’t matter how
hard and challenging it is to achieve the goal of esl teacher because with hard work and effort
together as teachers it is all possible to see students who never thought they could learn the
language and manage it good and feel like in their country in family. Esl programs are essential
for immigrant students and many students achieve at high levels. However, esl teachers face
many challenges in teaching immigrant students and assisting them, adapting to the American
culture and language. According to Ms. Mc nulty some of the challenges she face in sss are
students absences, when they are tired because of working jobs late shifts. Esl teachers must
prepare themselves to address the needs of students from different culture and different language
and become experts in best practices and classroom strategies. The esl teachers job is rewarding
but also challenging because she/he must teach and support esl students with different levels of
English. Including newcomers from different parts of the world, assist them to adapt to the
American culture, and help them get passing grades in all other subject areas. There are many
ways of helping students who had also faced a new reality. Everything takes big sacrifices in life
and it is all up to you to find great solutions. Esl teachers are big warriors fighting for equality,
for success, and education. Esl teachers will always be there to help students with knowledge and
they will never live anybody behind they will always tend a hand for the student that needs it
