Purpose
The FFA ExtemporaneousPublicSpeakingCareerDevelopmentEventisdesignedtodevelopthe ability
of all FFA memberstoexpressthemselvesona givensubjectwithouthavingpreparedorrehearsedits
contentinadvance.ThisgivesFFA membersanopportunitytoformulate theirremarksforpresentation
ina verylimitedamountof time.
Rules
1. The participantwill drawat randomthree specifictopicsfromthe listof possibletopics. Thislist
will be senttoall teachersby the Executive SecretarybyJanuary15th
eachyear and will include
currentagriculture issues. The studentwill have two(2) minutestoselecttheirtopicfromthose
drawn. Afterselectingthe topiconwhichtheydesire tospeak,all three topicswill be returnedto
the original groupof topicsprior to the nextdrawing.
2. The personin charge of the preparationroomwill supervisethe drawingof topicsandnotify
participantswhentheyare tospeak. Participantsshall draw fororderof appearance orbe
scheduled. Afterorderof appearingisdetermined,speakernumberone shall draw 30 minutes
before he/she istospeak. Approximately10minuteslaterthe nextspeakerwill draw his/hertopic
and so onuntil all speakershave drawn.
3. FFA ExtemporaneousPublicSpeaking participantsshall use onlythose cardssuppliedbythe person
incharge of the eventforhis/hernotestouse inspeaking.
4. The personin charge of the FFA ExtemporaneousPublicSpeakingeventwill have the authorityto
supervise the preparationroom forthe eventtosee thatall participantsmeetthe rulesof the
event.
5. Reference material will be screenedbythe officialsincharge of the eventpreparationroomonthe
followingbasis:
a. Must be printedmaterial suchasbooksor magazines. Cannot be notesorspeeches
preparedbythe participantor notespreparedbyanotherpersonforthe sole purpose of
use for thisevent.
b. Resourcesprintedfromthe internetmustcontainthe URL at the bottomof the page
whichprovesthe material wasprintedinwhole fromthe internet.
c. Shall be limitedtofive (5) items. Tobe countedasone item, a notebookof collected
itemsmaycontainno more than 20 separate itemsor100 pages.
2. 6. Each speakershall speakaminimumof four(4) minutesanda maximumof six (6) minutes. Five
(5) minutesadditional timewillbe allowedeachparticipantinwhichtodefendhis/herspeechon
questionswhichshall be askedbythe judges. A participantwill be penalizedone pointpereach
half minute oneachjudge'sscore sheetforbeingoversix (6) minutesorunderfour(4) minutes.
Time commenceswhenthe speakerbeginsspeaking.
7. A timekeeperwill recordthe time andgive ittothe judges. Note:thetimekeeper in the State
contestwill notstand at any time during theevent.*
8. The participantsshall be judgedbythree (3) personswhorepresent,asfaras possible,the fieldsof
agriculture,business,andeducation.
9. The judgeswill selectthe winnerof the eventusingthe officialscore sheetonlytosupplement
theircombinedopinion.
10. The winnerof the state eventwill representKentuckyinthe FFA National Extemporaneous
SpeakingCDE.
