This document discusses biomedical engineering and the role of biomedical engineers. It defines biomedical engineering as applying engineering principles to medicine and healthcare. Biomedical engineering combines engineering and medical sciences to advance healthcare treatment, diagnosis, and therapy. The document then outlines some of the key responsibilities of biomedical engineers, which include maintaining medical equipment, ensuring safety, providing education and training, and assisting with research and development, hospital design, and technology acquisition.

2. Biomedical engineering (BME) is the application
of engineering principles and design concepts to
medicine and biology for healthcare purposes (e.g.
diagnostic or therapeutic).
This field seeks to close the gap between
engineering and medicine:
It combines the design and problem solving skills
of engineering with medical and biological sciences
to advance healthcare treatment, including
diagnosis, monitoring, and therapy.
3. The Biomedical Engineering Department (BMED) is
responsible for preventive and corrective maintenance
of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and provides
evaluations of new technology, conducts device
incident investigations and ensures that equipment is
in proper and safe operating condition.
4.
5. BME can be divided into 4 sub-areas
• Bioengineering focus on pure research; with the aid of
mathematical model and simulations.
• Medical engineering is directed to the study, design
and construction of instrumentation, sensors, and
prosthesis for the medical field.
6. Clinical or hospital engineering focuses in certification
and testing of medical equipment and hospital
activities, such as design, adequacy and execution of
installations, consulting for acquisition of equipment,
training of maintenance teams.
Rehabilitation engineering aims the development of
electronic and mechanical systems for the
improvements of the quality of life of physically
challenged people.
