4. Synthetic function of the liver.
1. Albumin, plasma protein
2. Acute phase protein ; c- reactive protein
3. Steroid binding protein
4. Erythropoietin and Thrombopoietin
5. Clotting factor like I , II, V, VII, IX, X
6. Cholesterol and bile salt
5. Storage function of liver
1. Minerals; Copper, Zinc , Magnesium, Iron
2. Vitamins; A, D, E, K, B12
6.
7. Defence mechanism of liver
Reticuloendothelial cells (kupffer cells) of the liver play an
important role in defense of the body
•Foreign bodies such as bacteria or antigens are
swallowed and digested by reticuloendothelial cell of liver
by phagocytosis
•Reticuloendothelial cell also produce substances like
interleukins and Tumor necrosis factors which activate
immune system of body.

9. Regulatory Function
Helps to keep circulating blood sugar level and other body
fuels steady and constant.
stores and manufactures glucose depending upon bodies
need.
During starvation, it supplies glucose by two
mechanisms:
1.Glycogenolysis
2.Gluconeogenesis
Liver also makes alternate fuels called ketones from fat by
ketogenesis
10. Excretory function
● Liver is involved in the uptake, conjugation and
excretion of bilirubin derived from degradation
of heme in reticuloendothelial system.
● The conjugated bilirubin is excreted via bile.
● Liver also detoxifies ammonia, drug metabolites
and xenobiotics.
