2. Spices
The age of exploration was before
refrigeration.
People prevented meat from going bad
by using salt to dry it (like beef jerky!)
People then used lots of spices to cover up
the taste of the salt (or the rotten meat!)
3. Spices
Unfortunately for Europeans, these spices
did not grow in Europe.
The spices were mostly found in Asia.
It was difficult and expensive to get the
spices across land from Asia.
4. Spices
European rulers decided to try a new route
to Asia… Across the sea!
If a country could find a cheaper way to
get to Asia, they could sell the spices to
other countries and become rich.
5. Gold
Explorers were under the impression that other
places in the world had riches to be found.
These riches could include gold, the Fountain
of Youth, jewels, spices, or other items for
monetary gain.
6. Power & Glory
Many European leaders wanted more
power.
If they could conquer more land, they
would have more power!
This is called “expanding the empire”.
7. Power & Glory
Explorers wanted to use all the natural
resources they found to sell and trade.
They also wanted to use the native people
as slaves.
8. Spreading Christianity
During the age of exploration, there was
only one main religion in Europe…
Christianity.
European rulers were mostly religious and
wanted everyone to believe the same
exact things they did.
9. Big Question
*What motivated the explorers to explore?
The 3 Gs (Or G UNIT!)
Gold Glory God
10. Big Question
*How did explorers’ motivations affect how
they interacted with the natives they
encountered?
To be discovered…
