Characteristics can be used to describe an American but self–expression and hard work are the most important ones. These characteristics are what
helped the American society grow into the strong community it is today. To begin with, American's are admired for their freedom. In America,
people believe a person is born with rights and freedoms. People in America are free to be themselves as well as express themselves. To define an
American as free includes their rights as a human. Franklin D Roosevelt gave a speech in 1941 about people's freedoms. He states that everyone is
entitled to all the freedoms as a human being. Roosevelt stated "The first is freedom of speech and expression" (44). This freedom is in correlation
to an American right in Amendment I, freedom of speech. All of the freedoms Americans have contributed to who they really are. Freedoms of
religion, speech, press and many more make each person unique. Nobody is telling an American they cannot be, say or do anything. They are free

The political system of the United States of America is based upon democratic and republican principles, giving birth to the representative democracy
that is our government today. Over the many years since the founding of the nation and our first president, GeorgeWashington, politics has separated

encouraged corruption to run rampant throughout the government, and this corruption has lead to a decrease in efficiency and effectiveness in the

If I had the opportunity to change the Constitution of the United States of America, I would change the Electoral College system. Like many other
Americans, I feel that the Electoral College system is not effective. It caries a notion of the state versus the people, electors oversee a large part of the

The Constitution of the United States of America created a system called the Electoral College where it outlines the rules in which we elect the

as many electoral votes as it has senators and representatives. Therefore, each state, including the District of Columbia, will have at least three
electors. This is the vision of the Constitution. Now the problem arises when all the Electoral votes from one state are given to the popular winner for

Donald Kettl presents many controversial ideas in his book The Next Government of the United States. While some of the ideas Kettl provides
many be disagreed upon by some he gives excellent validation for reasoning. Two ideas that I believe are well worth discussing are the Mildred
Paradox that correlates with the Mildred Corollary and the irresponsible governance provided by the federal government. Each of these ideas brings
about aspects that should be considered by citizens when thinking of the U.S. government. Kettl's ideas are important in considering what the
government does and does not do for citizens: consequently, some may or may not trust the United States government, and Kettl is providing
reasoning behind the distrust. Kettl uses the negligence and disconnection of the government to the citizens to provide reasoning for why our
government is failing us. The Mildred Paradox pertains to the United States government paying for services provided to citizens, but is not the
provider of the actual service. The services that the government is paying for are outsourced to other companies. The government is not properly
controlling or even involving themselves in these services, therefore, things can slip through the cracks without being noticed; correspondingly, things

In Oregon, the "Oregon Death with Dignity Act" has changed the crime of assisted suicide into a medical treatment if it is provided by a physician.
The State of Washington also has a Death with Dignity Act (Assisted Suicide State Laws, 2011). However the laws in the rest of the United States

The endurance of the human spirit is always able to be seen through the eyes of the less fortunate. Not to discredit any other race or say that any race
is superior to any other, however the enduring spirit of African Americans could be seen during the 1800's and still can be seen shining brightly today.
When one thinks of endurance, one tends to think about sustainability. In this case I am talking about how long it would it take for the human spirit to
broken and be conformed and molded. There are a plethora of pivotal moments in history that led up to African Americans having the ability to have a
voice in America today, however I think there are four events that shows the progress and that show how life in theUnited States changed over time for

Texas is considered a very diverse and unique state in many different aspects. It is the second largest state with more than twenty–six million people

Historiography has changed immensely since the beginning of the historian profession. Times of conflict can result in the approaches of
historiography changing in a short period. By the end of the nineteenth century, he writing of American history had changed from consensus to
progressivism. This opened up a new form of writing and opportunities to include different approaches or fields, such as science, economics,
political science, and sociology, to help the understanding of the topic. In 1903, William Du Bois, influenced by Pragmatism, wrote about the Civil
War and how it was a result of economic and social factors of African Americans in his book The Soul of the Black Folk. Then, Charles and Mary

Civil Liberties and Civil Rights are two terms that are often used interchangeably in America. Since the founding of our nation there has always been

Salmon populations have been declining for years, especially very drastically in the last few years. This issue has been going on for years with very
little awareness of the public living in the Northwest, especially around the Puget Sound area in Washington State. From Seattle Times I quote, "There
used to be coho salmon runs all through Puget Sound and creeks. There haven't been for decades," said Julann Spromberg, a toxicologist working for
NOAA Fisheries. "They're coming back, and they're dying. We need to figure out what's going on."
One of the main causes of the declining number of salmon is water runoff. Water runoff is an over flow of water from rain, snow melt, and other
sources of water that goes into the stream and eventually into the ocean. Unfortunately, the water runoff will pick up anything that it went through such
as oil, pesticides, fertilizers, and other water contaminants. These water contaminants are bad for the marine life and the environment, especially in
our case the salmon in the Puget Sound area. With the increasing population in the Puget Sound area, there will be more and more land being
developed to provide more space for more people. More population in the Puget Sound area will also increase the water pollution in the Puget Sound
