How Are Maggie And Dee Alike
Some sisters have a great relationship, but some do not. The characteristics of both sisters shape that relationship. Although Dee and Maggie are sisters
in the story "Everyday Use", they have many characteristics that are different, but they also have a few characteristics that are similar. Dee and Maggie
both differ in the characteristics of being assertive and being family oriented, but they share the characteristic of being clever. Firstly, Dee and
Maggie differ in the characteristic of assertiveness. From the very beginning, one can notice that Dee is a lot more assertive than Maggie. In fact, it
can be said that Maggie is not assertive at all; she is submissive. Dee is decisive and confident even when she was young. Dee will not take ... Show

They both are clever. Even though they are both clever, they are clever in different ways. Dee is educated when it comes to academics. For example,
Mama says that Dee went to Augusta to school and learned many things, " But that was before we raised the money, the church and me, to send her to
Augusta to school... She washed us in a river of make– believe, burned us with a lot of knowledge we didn't necessarily need to know," (Page 79). Dee
is very clever because she went to Augusta, Georgia for school and is knowledgeable in subjects related to academics. Her knowledge on those
subjects still doesn't mean that it is any use to her family directly. Likewise, Maggie is also very clever. Maggie may not be as educated as Dee,
but she is still very clever. Maggie shows how clever she is when she says this, "Aunt Dee's first husband whittled the dash... His name was Henry,
but they called him Stash." At that, Dee comments, "Maggie's brain is like an elephant's," (Page 81). Maggie is clever because she can remember
things from a long time ago. Dee acknowledges this fact by comparing her brain to an elephant's. An elephant can also remember things from the past
well too. Maggie's ability to remember events is what makes her clever. Therefore, Maggie and Dee both share the characteristic of being

Maya Angelu Poem Analysis
Maya Angelou is a famous writer and civil rights activist who wrote an extensive amount of autobiographies, poems, and books, though she is more
famous for her poetry. Angelou's poems are her most popular works because they are powerful. Within her poem she weaves symbolism, current events,
and, most importantly, rhetorical devices. In President Bill Clinton's Inaugural Poem, Maya Angelou effectively uses personification and extended
metaphor in order to show the audience that they should recognize the past and its lessons so they can take that knowledge to create a better and
brighter future.
"A Rock, A River, A Tree," is what is continuously described throughout the poem. The rock, river, and tree are all described with hearing and seeing
major key points in America's history and speak to the audience numerous times in the poem, this is personification. The Rock crying out to the
audience is the first example of personification in the poem. It states, "...the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully / Come you may stand upon my
/ Back and face your distant destiny / But seek no haven in my shadow... / Face down in ignorance." The rock tells the audience that they may stand on
it and that it will give them a hiding place there, but they cannot hide from the world and neglect it. They should be aware of their surroundings and
educate themselves on it. Another example of personification in the poem is when Angelou describes a river that, "sings a beautiful song... / Your armed

Short Story Of Sasha Silver
Sasha Silver's old friends left her because she lied about so much stuff that hurt Callie Harper and Eric Rodriguez. Jacob Schwartz and Sasha were
in her dorm at the wrong time and when Jacob tried to kiss Sasha, she pushed him away right when Eric entered the room. Eric was Sasha's
boyfriend at the time and he thoguht they just finished kissing, but Sasha pushed Jacob back, they didn't really kiss. When they went back to the
party Sasha wanted to protect Callie and Jacob's relationship because they were dating and Jacob really wanted Sasha. Sasha told Paige Parker,
Callie, and Eric a lie she said that Sasha really loved Jacob and she tried to kiss Jacob but Jacob pushed her away when Eric came in but it was really

One day at breakfast Sasha wanted to sit alone and Paige understood, but Heather saw her looking like a "dork" and didn't want Jasmine King, her
enemy, to see how weak Sasha was, so Heather invited her to sit with The Trio(Heather Fox, Julia Myer, and Alison Robb.) The next few weeks
passed and Sasha was working on school work and riding nonstop, so Heather did notice and asked her if she wanted to take a break from
everything and spend the night with them. Sasha really didn't want to but she decided yes and had to think of how to tell Paige. After the
sleepover Sasha went straight to her dorm and got ready for school. Later that day Sasha went to her riding practice and she felt dizzy soon after
that feeling she fainted. When she opened her eyes Jasmine, Heather, Eric, and Mr. Connor was there asking if she was ok and telling her to stay
laying there. She went to the nurse and she fainted because she had been overworking herself, so the nurse excused her from all classes the next day.
She hated staying in from classes, but she had to so her body could rest and catch

All Dreams Can Come True If We Have Courage
As Walt Disney once said "All dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them." Courage is something that everyone is born with, but
only some are courageous enough to find it and put it to use. Merriam Webster 's defines courage as "Mental or moral strength to venture, persevere,
and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty." Courage can overcome any obstacle, proving that if we have courage any dream truly can come true. As
readers we must understand that there are going to be times in life when we must use courage. By reading about others, and learning how to find the
courage within, the reader is able to learn that courage truly is self–identifiable. There may be people along the way to help one find courage. However,

"The next day he went on a live show on the voice of America and angrily condemned the attacks." It is very frightening to speak up against
something so powerful and evil, example: The Taliban. However, if the whole world were to realize that the power of these hate groups comes
from the creation of fear, maybe everyone would be a bit more like Malala's dad, and not have the fear to speak up for what is right. The author is
trying to show us that no matter our circumstances we can all find the courage to fight for what we know is right. Malala is a prime example of
courage because her life was put on the line. However, she walked the tightrope over the hate of the Taliban. She reached the tallest building and was
able to achieve the greatest of accomplishments. Including being the youngest person ever nominated for the Nobel
Peace Prize. Malala was able to accomplish many extraordinary things thanks to her courage.
The next example of a quiet girl with a loud mind is Maya Angelou. Maya was born in Arkansas and raised with her grandma. For her whole life she
never knew if she had parents, so she created the perspective that she had been abandoned and unwanted. Though a negative outlook, a realistic one for
a child who had never received anything from the so–called "parents" that brought her into this cold, lonely world. "I wouldn't have to wonder whether
I loved him or not, or have to answer "Does Daddy's baby want to go to California with Daddy?"

The Kite Runner Chapter 11 Summary
Chapter 10 Summary: When the boys wake up the next morning Hollis leaves them a note. The note said that there interview was good, but it was too
long. Instead she just wants them to use four questions that she has created. Today they are interviewing Zeke, and he tells them about his life, and
how he likes the free coke machine. Once they were done with Zeke, Lindsey left to hang out with her boyfriend, while Hassan, and Colin interviewed
twenty–six other people. Once they boys are done with all the interviews Colin calls Katherine 19. Katherine doesn't answer and Colin leaves a
message. A few moments later he gets a call back from Katherine, but she tells him that she thinks they should keep their distance from each other.

Hassan that all he does is sit around, and do nothing. Once Hassan and Lindsey leave Colin begins to think about Katherine. He thinks back to when
she asked him to help her study French for her test the next day. Colin had a date that day with a girl named Marie, but he let her down easy so he
could go teach Katherine. Analysis: The tone of this chapter is neutral because all Colin does is think about Katherine and read While Lindsey and
Hassan are out having fun. Reflection: This chapter was very boring to me because nothing interesting really happened at all. I feel as though some

Examples Of Racism In Maya Angelou
Throughout her life, Maya Angelou was ridiculed for the color of her skin and was treated differently because of it. So many racist people lived in
her town and used her and the black community as a doormat. African Americans were restricted to certain things and, "did not have the same rights
and privileges as whites" (Agins 8). Racism was a big problem in Maya Angelou's childhood, especially when she was eight. When Angelou was
eight she helped her grandmother run the main store in Stamps. Momma rented out the house on the lot of her store to a poor white family. The girls
would come by the store and demand things from Momma and Maya and would have to be addressed as "Miz". One day when they went to walk up
the steps they saw Momma standing on the porch with arms crossed and slippers on and started imitating her. Maya was infuriated and wanted to hurt
the girls but Momma taught Maya to let it roll off her back, seeing as though racism would be a continuous thing throughout her life (Angelou 29–32).
Maya felt that, "Being a product (is 'victim' a better word?) of southern Negro upbringing, I decided that I 'would understand it all better by–and–by'"
(Angelou 276). Angelou found it easier to be brought up through a segregated area where she was taunted and walked all over just for being black
daily rather than finding it out later in life. As a child Maya Angelou was constantly moved from Stamps to San Francisco and, "sympathizes with the
plight of abandoned black

Rebecca And Tyler: Movie Analysis
ebecca (Olivia DeJonge) and Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) get ready for a week–long stay with their grandparents, John (Peter McRobbie) and Doris (Deanna
Dunagan), while their mom, Paula (Kathryn Hahn), goes on a voyage with her new beau. The two children, who have never met their grandparents,
mean to film a narrative about their visit. Paula has not seen her guardians for a long time, after she ran off with her secondary teacher, Robert, who
has since abandoned her. She educates Rebecca small regarding the difference she had with her guardians, recommending that Rebecca approach
them for more subtle elements. Rebecca and Tyler are welcomed by John and Doris at the train station. When they are settled in at their grandparents'
confined farmhouse, Rebecca and Tyler are told to never go close to the cellar on the grounds that it contains harmful mold. That night, John tells
Rebecca and Tyler that as he and Doris are elderly, their sleep time is 9:30 p.m. An hour past check in time, Rebecca wanders down the stairs for

Analysis Of The Lesson By Toni Cade Bambara
"The Lesson" by Toni Cade Bambara is a story about a group of seven kids and is told in the point of view of Sylvia, one of the children that seems
to be a leader of the group. The other children of the group were Sugar, Flyboy, Fat Butt, Junebug, Q.T., Rosie Giraffe, and Mercedes. They are taken
to an upscale toy store by an elderly lady, named Miss Moore, who lives in their neighborhood and takes the responsibility of educating the children
when they are not in school. Miss Moore takes the children to a high end toy store in the city to teach them about the value of money, and to show
them how the wealth in America is not equally distributed. "The Lesson" by Toni Cade Bambara should be included in the ENC 1102 curriculum
because of the theme... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are total of nine characters that play a role throughout the story, and each of them leave their own mark on the story. For the most part all of the
children have a shocked reaction when learning the price of the toys they see at the toy store, but they do vary in the manner with which the react. In
Rena Korb's critical essay on "The Lesson" she explains this at a deeper level, "Big Butt reacts on a visceral level. He sees the microscope and
declares 'I'm going to buy that there,' when he is not even sure what a person uses a microscope to look at." (Korb). Junebug on the other hand
reacts in a different way when being told what a paperweight was, and how much this particular one cost "he figures she 'crazy or lyin' because
'we don't keep paper on top of the desk in my class.'" (Korb). There is also one of the children who seems to be a little different from the rest,
Mercedes. When Miss Moore explains what a paperweight is and how it is used to keep paper on top of a desk, she is the only one who says she
has a desk at home. Another instance where we see Mercedes react differently than the other children is when everyone is shocked by the price of
the sailboat being over one thousand dollars; commenting how they would buy parts from a store to build their own for less than a dollar, she says
"My father'd but it for me if I wanted it." (Bambara, p. 149). These are only a few examples of how the characters differ from each other, but all of
them together make the story great; the way Bambara was able to tie everything in and make the characters relate to one another despite their
differences is why this story should be read in this

Calipurnia Research Paper
As I am reading this story, I questioned whether Calipurnia or Aunt Alexandra is a better mom. I think Calipurnia is a better mom for many different
reasons. She puts more time into the kids than Aunt Alexandra, and she genuinely cares for the kids and wants to keep them safe. To start off with,
Calipurnia puts a lot more time into the kids than Aunt Alexandra does. On many occasions Calipurnia has made things for Scout and Jem to eat or
drink like a mother would. For example, she said, "she did give Jem a hot biscuit–and–butter which he tore in half and shared with me" (Lee 137). This
shows that not only would Calipurnia make their every meal, but she would sometimes give the kids some snacks while she was cooking in the kitchen
too. In addition, Scout said that, "We skulked around the kitchen until Calipurnia threw us out" (Lee 137). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is one of the only ones that use the kitchen, and when she is in there, she is the one in charge. Not only does Calipurnia spend a lot of time
making the Finch's food, but she also has spent a lot of her life working for the Finches. Here Calipurnia said, "I've spent all my days workin' for the
Finches" (Lee 166). What she meant by that is that from as long as she could remember she was working for the Finches. From all of the time that
she has spent with them she has almost become a loyal member of the Finches herself. Not to mention, Atticus later said, "I couldn't have got along
with out her all these years" (Lee 182). This shows that Calipurnia has been with them for a long time, and that she has done a lot that Atticus
probably have done with out her. She has almost taken over the role of Mrs. Finch with all that she does for

Montana 1948 Thesis
In the book "Montana 1948" written by Larry Watson, the author talks in depth about many different controversial topics and brings up many good
points that can we can relate to our own world. The author uses many different strategies and techniques in this book that enhance the reading
experience, there were not too many dull moments and It always left me wanting more. My main theme is appearances and disguises vs reality
and how people are not always what they seem, Richard Cory is a great example of this, but does this type of stuff happen in real life? The answer
is yes they do, one real world example is when Adolf Merckle killed himself, he was a father of four and in 2008 the 94th richest person in the
world. Wouldn't you expect someone with over 6 billion dollars to be happy? well it was not the case for Adolf Merckle and the same for Frank in

The author uses many different literary elements to get his point across. The first thing is this book is written in David's point of view which is a
first person point of view, another thing the author uses is a good sense of setting and has a very descriptive way of describing Montana in the year
1948 for example David says "The land is dry and sparse and the wind never stops blowing. The heat and thunderstorms in the summer can be brutal
and the winters are legendary for the fierceness of their blizzards and the depths to which temperatures drop." This is a quote from David on the first
page of the book and this shows how much description went into getting the reader to be able to imagine

Toni Cade Bambara The Lesson Essay
"The Lesson," by Toni Cade Bambara is a narrative told by a young black girl named Sylvia. Sylvia is a young African–American girl who was raised
and lives in a rough, poor neighborhood. She is quite disrespectful to Miss Moore and well as her friends and cousin. She says that she hates "this
nappy–head bitch and her goddamn college degree," which shows that she has no respect for those who are older than her and those who are
educated. When interacting with others, Sylvia and is getting physical by pushing her friends and steeping on her cousins toes. She is also quite
competitive and believes that "ain't nobody gonna beat me at nuthin." In the beginning of the story Sylvia and her cousin Sugar seem very alike. Sylvia
and Sugar engage in the same activities and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sugar seems slightly less disrespectful than Sylvia, however, this could be due to the fact that Sylvia is the narrator. Sugar isn't seen disrespecting
Miss Moore as much as Sylvia is. Sugar may be displeased with having to go with Miss Moore but she doesn't say so like Sylvia does. Sylvia
mentions how she would rather "snatch Sugar and go to the Sunset and terrorize the West Indian kids" but Sugar doesn't mention this plans but this
could be because we don't have insight into Sugar's thoughts. As the story progresses we see that both Sylvia's and Sugar's character undergo some
changes. While they were both affected by the event of the day, I believe that Sugar was more affected. When Miss Moore asks what do thinks about
the society "in which some people can spend on a toy what it could cost to feed a family of six or seven" Sugar responds by saying that "equal chance
to pursue happiness means an equal crack at the dough, don't it?" Sugar understands the lesson that Miss Moore intended to teach them through their
trip to the toystore. She understands that through education and hard work, despite where you come from you can still reach the

One of the traits jonah shares with mrs. Hodge is the ability to think under pressure. Mr. Hodge shows this trait when he was trapped by the kids in

To Kill A Mockingbird Analysis
"A study by Psychologist Susan Segerstrom found that ten years after graduating, law students who were optimistic earned an average of $32,667 more
than their glass–half–empty peers." (Warrell) According to Margie Warrell, in her article, "Why Optimists Are Happier, Healthier and Wealthier!",
people who are optimistic about life have more opportunities and pessimistic people fall behind. This article connects to the novel, To Kill a
Mockingbird by Harper Lee, by stating that looking for the positive side of life will only give positive results. The story of To Kill a Mockingbird is
about Atticus Finch, a white lawyer who attempts to defend an innocent black man, and is told through the eyes of his intelligent and innocent young
daughter, Scout. As Scout grows up, she encounters many people who make her angry, but instead of letting these people bring her down, she uses
them to learn how to find the good in people. When children grow up facing difficult problems with the people in their lives, they learn to look for the
positive aspects of people and treat them with respect.
Neighbors can be hard to deal with, but they also help children learn an important lesson about staying positive during difficult times. This is clearly
shown throughout the book with the character named Mrs. Dubose. Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose, the grouchy old lady living two doors down the
street from the Finches, is always giving Scout and Jem a hard time, no matter what they do. The children

How Does Mark Twain Use Satire In Huckleberry Finn
'So you've been gone a couple days,' Alison said. 'Hmm, what'd you miss...A celebrity did drugs. Politicians disagreed. A different celebrity wore a
bikini that revealed a bodily imperfection. A team won a sporting event, but another team lost.' I smiled. 'You can't go disappearing on everybody
like this, Hazel. You miss too much.'" ~John Green. John Green is criticizing how Americans only care about irrelevant events going on in the
world. Americans would choose to hear the latest celebrity gossip, over an event that affected the world. John Green is comparable to Mark Twain,
whom also is a big critic of American society. Mark Twain used humor to make fun of family feuds, hypocrisy among religion, and the gullibility of
people to fall for a prank. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain used satire to his advantage and humiliated many aspects of American

The Grangerford's have been in a family feud with Shepherdson's for as long as they can remember. The feud has been going on for so many

targets the many family feuds in America. Families go above and beyond to torment each other. Twain accomplishes what he is targeting by showing
how far the families would go. "It was young Harney Shepherdson. I heard Buck's gun go off at my ear, and Harney's hat tumbled off from his head"

mercilessly. After Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade were walking with Sherri Valance and her friend Marcia. Bob and Randy saw that they were
walking with their girlfriends and they became upset, but peacefully took them in their car. Ponyboy and Johnny returned to the park and fell asleep.
When Ponyboy returned home his brother became mad and roughly smacked him across the face with the back of his hand. Feeling betrayed
Ponyboy returned to the lot with Johnny and they ran away. They relaxed and came to the park to talk. Mr. Sheldon and Randy approached with

Theme Of Friendship In Frankenstein
"Frankenstein" is a gothic/science fiction novel that keeps the reader at the edge of their seat. It is filled with scenes of love, power, tragedy, and
much more. This novel, is packed to the rims with themes and lessons, most of them dealing with creation; however, I wanted to discuss a theme that
is lying beneath the surface and is buried in the text. This paper explores how Frankenstein mistakes friendship for possession. This theme will be
analyzed using gender, class, a tone of disgust, possession, and disappointment, imagery of beauty, and lastly, metaphor.
Due to Victor Frankenstein's wealthy upbringing, he views friendship as a possession. From the very beginning of the novel, Frankenstein's family is
conditioning him to take ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The relationship between Elizabeth and Victor lead to the assumption that possession of someone results in some sort of an intimate relationship:
"my more than sister, since till death she was to be mine only" (Shelley, 37). The tone of this passage is incredibly possessive. It seems as if the
only reason Victor is giving any praise or importance to Elizabeth is because she is his until death. Due to the powerful proprietorial tone of this line,
I got the impression that Victor believes he is the only one who gets to decide when Elizabeth can die. Another tone I get from this line, is a sense of
pride. He doesn't actually have pride toward Elizabeth, but rather he has pride in the fact that she was his and only his.
Victor's first possessive experience with a relationship imprinted–how his next relationships throughout his life would go. After going away to school,
Victor felt quite isolated and longed for a friend or an equal. He obsessed over the thought of possessing an equal to the point of him bringing a
creature to life. He dedicated all of his energy and time into creating the ultimate equal who was beautiful and as intelligent as he, but immediately
after the creature came to life, Victor was disgusted: "I felt the bitterness of disappointment; dreams that had been my food and pleasant rest for so

America by Maya Angelou Essay
America by Maya Angelou Maya Angelou acclaimed poet and author wrote a poem entitled "America". The poem offers words of truth of our
country America. The poem begins, " The gold of her promise, has never been mined." America, promises us that all men are created equal. The first
problem with the promise is we are not all men. The gold of her promise, address equality. Although it is promised to all in this country, its never
delivered, when discrimination, of race and gender are still existent. "Her borders of justice, not clearly defined." We all have our opinions on what

Comparison Of The Price And Stephen King's Misery
The last two plays that I have seen on Broadway were Arthur Miller's The Price, and Stephen King's Misery. Both plays were extremely interesting and
captivating to watch because of their simple set design, small cast, and concentrated, straightforward plot. Similarly, these plays employed
non–exaggerated direction, and focused on more subtle movements and stage direction to focus on the focal point of the scene. Both plays were
mainly dramas, so the direction caused the plays to feel more personal and visceral. In Arthur Miller's The Price, one significant stage picture that
stood out was a scene where Gregory Solomon (played by Danny Devito) is eating an egg downstage right center, while Victor Franz (played by Mark
Ruffalo) stands in center stage having an argument with Solomon. Solomon was directed to sit further downstage than Franz in order to pull the
audiences attention towards his actions. In the scene, Devito devours a hard–boiled egg while trying to explain furniture appraisal to Ruffalo; Devito
never stopped talking and eating (doing both at the same time). This direction to not break dialogue further intrigued the audience because it pulled the
audiences attention towards Devito and the question of when he would finish. The physicality of the stage picture was not excessive or magnified to
draw attention, yet the scene was compelling because of the focused attention on detail and realism in character movement and direction. In Stephen
King's Misery, the

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
In the book to "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee there is one very important character in the book that is not present, the Mother of Jem and

definitely be different if the Mother was still alive. Atticus is the one who is affected the most by the death of the mother. If her death had not taken
place he would not have become so close to both Jem and Scout. Atticus would go to work, come home, and read. Never having much to do with any
of the family. This is just how things were back then. The mother cared for the kids and the father went to work. Without her death Scout and Jem

their real mother around Cal would not have the relationship she has with the family. Her love for the children would turn bitter, for the fact that she

Masculinity in HemingwayВґs The Sun Also Rises
Hemingway's novel The Sun Also Rises has his male characters struggling with what it means to be a man in the post–war world. With this struggle
one the major themes in the novel emits, masculine identity. Many of these "Lost Generation" men returned from that war in dissatisfaction with their
life, the main characters of Hemingway's novel are found among them. His main characters find themselves drifting, roaming around France and Spain,
at a loss for something meaningful in their lives. The characters relate to each other in completely shallow ways, often ambiguously saying one thing,
while meaning another. The Sun Also Rises first person narration offers few clues to the real meaning of his characters' interactions with each other. The

He does not have dinner with her because he misses dining with a woman, but possible he truly means that he misses the sexual experience. His war

Jake and Robert Cohn and their relationship is another indicator of the theme of masculine insecurity. Hemingway plays up the tensions of competition
and jealousy to demonstrate just how uncertain his male characters are. Cohn seems to sincerely be keen of Jake, and while Jake is normally nice
toward him although he does not really seem to reciprocate Cohn's warmth. Their relationship changes once Jake discovers Cohn's fling with Brett.
After this incident, he is more unfriendly toward him, and more critical of him. A conversation that happens later between Jake and Bill hints at
Jake's jealousy. Bill asks Jake if he was ever in love with Brett and Jake responds with "Off and on for a hell of a long time." Bill apologizes for
being inconsiderate, Jake them claims he no longer cares. Bill is skeptic of this though (128). The competition between Jake and Cohn relationship
reaches its first peak, when he finds out about Cohn's trip with Brett and their sexual affair and by Cohn's belief that he knows Brett better than Jake
does. His hatred for Cohn grows even more throughout the novel with Jake

How Can Adversity be Advantageous Essay
Adversity puts people in difficult or unpleasant situations which can create very strong emotions that can help or harm. When people face
adversity, it is seen as a challenge and whether or not they overcome the challenge is personal. However regardless of whether adversity helps or
harms, it is advantageous because it offers a challenge to overcome which builds character. I believe it to be true of the whole human race that when
something pushes you down you look to find a way out of it. We always try our best to overcome adversity and that can make us stronger. In many
cases the workers that a lot of us pay to clean and cook are faced with adversity from the start. As young kids growing up having very little it's difficult

Clint Dempsey is a soccer player, probably the greatest American soccer player in the world right now. He was born into a poor family in Texas

died at the age of 16 due to a brain disease, which Dempsey says motivated him to do better. The other kids in poverty around him were hispanics
who loved the sport of soccer. And seemingly Clint must have enjoyed it too because he was able to play on clubs travel around the united States

Maya Angelou Motherhood
Maya Angelou
By consistently weaving the theme of motherhood into her literature,
Maya Angelou creates both personal narratives and poems that the reader
can relate to. Her exploration of this universal theme lends itself to a
very large and diverse audience. Throughout Angelou's works, she allows
her followers to witness her metamorphosis through different aspects of
motherhood.
Well–worked themes are always present in Angelou's works– self–
acceptance, race, men, work, separation, sexuality, and motherhood.
However, Angelou uses the latter to provide "literary unity" (Lupton 7–8).

After ten years of living with Momma Henderson, Maya and Bailey are
sent to join their mother in St. Louis. By the time the children are in

traveling between their parents' separate homes and Momma Henderson's in

The turmoil that Maya undergoes causes her to question many aspects
of herself. As a young woman she begins to doubt her sexual preference
and engages in a onetime sexual encounter to prove her sexuality. After
this experience, Maya finds herself pregnant. Angelou ends her first book
with the birth of her son, Guy. This occurrence lends itself to a note of
awakening that carries through Maya's next book, Gather Together In My

Between the conclusion of Caged Bird and the beginning of Gather
Together, there is practically no break in the narrative. The former ends
with Guy's birth and the latter when he is just a few months old. In its

п‚· But later on contrasting it with Alan Mcdonalds suffering she is unable to explain it and feels the cycle of suffering is flawed.
Annie Dillard's Inference
The Narrator feels suffering is something we cannot control and is ridiculous to cry over as she has experienced being helpless and useless in the
situation of the derr and the burning man. In both the instances she could not save the victims. The implied conclusion is to accept that the suffering is
present in the world, but also accept the fact that there is nothing we humans can do about it.
Humans while experiencing suffering start questioning it when they should rather be accepting it, this is the message the author is trying to convey.
She feels that this is something humans go through in their cycle of life and is 'ridiculous' to cry upon.
'' Medicine, cannot ease their pain; drugs just leak away, soaking the sheets, because there is no skin to hold them in. People just lie there and weep. ''

Bryan The Hero In The Movie Taken
Grit, resilience and tenacity are characteristics that Bryan displayed in the movie Taken. Bryan traveled to a foreign country in order to find his

but always begins his journey with a humble beginning, call to action and concludes with a transformation. Bryan is an ex government agent who

The Outsiders Similarities Between Dally And Johnny
People tend to keep company with people that share many qualities and opinions with them. That being said, no two people can be entirely identical.
This is certainly the case with Johnny Cade and Dallas Winston from the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Johnny and Dally are in similar
situations due to them both having neglectful parents and both placing minimal value on their lives. Despite their similarities, Dally and Johnny have
very different opinions on how Ponyboy should be and on the law itself. So it is clear to see that Johnny Cade and Dally Winston are similar and

For instance, in the letter that Johnny left behind for Ponyboy to find he says about the children they saved at the church, "Their lives are worth
more than mine, they have more to live for" (178). This statement, in every way, shows how little value Johnny places on his own life. Rather than
being afraid of death he is saying how he is fine with dying because his life is not worth as much as the lives of the children him and Pony saved at
the flaming church in Windrixville. Correspondingly, Dally does not give very much worth to his life either. After Johnny dies, Dally goes on a
suicide mission and when he dies Ponyboy says of him, "I knew he would be dead, because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got
what he wanted" (154). Dally wants to be dead and purposely drives the police to the point of killing him. The fact that Dally wants to die proves that
he does not place much worth to his life. Overall, it is very evident that both Dally and Johnny deem their lives as not very

Celebrities Acting with Humanism
In the reading "Existentialism is a Humanism", the author Jean–Paul Sartre presents the idea of Existentialism. He introduces this idea by stating that
man's plan in this world is not pre–determined, as we only determine who we are or who we want to become throughout life. Sartre states that a
person is what a person does. He also uses a metaphoric scenario of a man jumping on a scene before defining himself. These two ideas imply that
man has no ultimate meaning, and it is up to us to find it through experience and by taking action. Additionally, Sartre also implies that humans
have a huge responsibility on becoming who they want to become as it is only up to them to do so, making us entirely responsible for our
existence. Sartre states that, "when we say that man is responsible for himself, we do not mean that he is responsible for his own individuality, but
that he is responsible for all men." This quote implies that men are not only responsible for their own lives but also responsible for the
development of society as we are all an example to everyone that is born after us. Everyone that is new to this world looks up to their ancestors in
order to see what they were like and to use them as a point of guidance in order to go through life. This quote also implies that men should behave in
a way that improves this society because their actions will likely be replicated in the near future. An example of such behavior can be the one of a

father designates to him, and until Frank dies, after he moves out of Montana, gets rid of his father's control, to the extent, he dismantles his suffering a

O Pioneers By Willa Cather Analysis
O Pioneers!: The Land and the American Dream It seems that everything in Willa Cather's O Pioneers!, aside from the land, starts out so full of
life and ends so utterly devoid of it. It could even be said that the characters in the novel become imprisoned by their own lives. Marie is barred by
her love, which, in the end, leaves her quite literally lifeless. Alexandra, who initially is so full of life, begins to view her life as unimportant and as a
prison house. Even the spirituality of the pioneers is ever declining and dying away. Ultimately it is Frank who embodies the idea most obviously; in

Alexandra puts her entire life into the land. In fact, Alexandra seems to exemplify the land itself. She epitomizes the American Dream and everything it
stands for. She takes a raw piece of Nebraskan soil and works it until it becomes bountiful and she becomes wealthy and seemingly successful. In
all of her success in achieving the American Dream, very little is said about Alexandra's own hopes and dreams. Though Alexandra is the only one
to have achieved anything close to the American Dream, she is the only character to become completely downhearted. In the novel it is written that
"she was actually tired of life" (112) and that "what was left of life seemed so unimportant" (113). She also relates life to a poem she loved as a girl,
and the poem reads as follows: Hence Forth the world will only be/A wider prison–house to me...(118). Regardless of the fact that Alexandra signifies
everything that is the American Dream, she is still unhappy with and imprisoned by life. It is not until she indulges in her own dream, the
companionship of Carl Linstrum that she begins to see life in an optimistic light. Another element soiled by the standards of America is the spirituality
of the pioneers. The best example of this is illustrated in the novel's character Ivar. While the church itself rejects Ivar and most of Hanover wants to
send him to an asylum, he is probably one of the most spiritual people in the entire prairie. Ivar has a personal relationship

Although Frank's character lives on, it is unfortunate to see that despite his increased commitment to his work, he is more lifeless than before. The end

message is that we should not blind ourselves to the beautiful things that are right in front of us. In the pursuit of happiness, it seems like we
sometimes don't realize what it is we already have. Nevertheless, Suburbia is not to blame for the Wheeler's misery, and film does a wonderful job

Dee And Maggie's Clever Nature

  • 1. How Are Maggie And Dee Alike Some sisters have a great relationship, but some do not. The characteristics of both sisters shape that relationship. Although Dee and Maggie are sisters in the story "Everyday Use", they have many characteristics that are different, but they also have a few characteristics that are similar. Dee and Maggie both differ in the characteristics of being assertive and being family oriented, but they share the characteristic of being clever. Firstly, Dee and Maggie differ in the characteristic of assertiveness. From the very beginning, one can notice that Dee is a lot more assertive than Maggie. In fact, it can be said that Maggie is not assertive at all; she is submissive. Dee is decisive and confident even when she was young. Dee will not take ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They both are clever. Even though they are both clever, they are clever in different ways. Dee is educated when it comes to academics. For example, Mama says that Dee went to Augusta to school and learned many things, " But that was before we raised the money, the church and me, to send her to Augusta to school... She washed us in a river of make– believe, burned us with a lot of knowledge we didn't necessarily need to know," (Page 79). Dee is very clever because she went to Augusta, Georgia for school and is knowledgeable in subjects related to academics. Her knowledge on those subjects still doesn't mean that it is any use to her family directly. Likewise, Maggie is also very clever. Maggie may not be as educated as Dee, but she is still very clever. Maggie shows how clever she is when she says this, "Aunt Dee's first husband whittled the dash... His name was Henry, but they called him Stash." At that, Dee comments, "Maggie's brain is like an elephant's," (Page 81). Maggie is clever because she can remember things from a long time ago. Dee acknowledges this fact by comparing her brain to an elephant's. An elephant can also remember things from the past well too. Maggie's ability to remember events is what makes her clever. Therefore, Maggie and Dee both share the characteristic of being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Maya Angelu Poem Analysis Maya Angelou is a famous writer and civil rights activist who wrote an extensive amount of autobiographies, poems, and books, though she is more famous for her poetry. Angelou's poems are her most popular works because they are powerful. Within her poem she weaves symbolism, current events, and, most importantly, rhetorical devices. In President Bill Clinton's Inaugural Poem, Maya Angelou effectively uses personification and extended metaphor in order to show the audience that they should recognize the past and its lessons so they can take that knowledge to create a better and brighter future. "A Rock, A River, A Tree," is what is continuously described throughout the poem. The rock, river, and tree are all described with hearing and seeing major key points in America's history and speak to the audience numerous times in the poem, this is personification. The Rock crying out to the audience is the first example of personification in the poem. It states, "...the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully / Come you may stand upon my / Back and face your distant destiny / But seek no haven in my shadow... / Face down in ignorance." The rock tells the audience that they may stand on it and that it will give them a hiding place there, but they cannot hide from the world and neglect it. They should be aware of their surroundings and educate themselves on it. Another example of personification in the poem is when Angelou describes a river that, "sings a beautiful song... / Your armed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Eric was Sasha's boyfriend at the time and he thoguht they just finished kissing, but Sasha pushed Jacob back, they didn't really kiss. Sasha told Paige Parker, Callie, and Eric a lie she said that Sasha really loved Jacob and she tried to kiss Jacob but Jacob pushed her away when Eric came in but it was really the other way around. One day at breakfast Sasha wanted to sit alone and Paige understood, but Heather saw her looking like a "dork" and didn't want Jasmine King, her enemy, to see how weak Sasha was, so Heather invited her to sit with The Trio(Heather Fox, Julia Myer, and Alison Robb.) The next few weeks passed and Sasha was working on school work and riding nonstop, so Heather did notice and asked her if she wanted to take a break from everything and spend the night with them. Sasha really didn't want to but she decided yes and had to think of how to tell Paige. After the sleepover Sasha went straight to her dorm and got ready for school. Later that day Sasha went to her riding practice and she felt dizzy soon after that feeling she fainted. When she opened her eyes Jasmine, Heather, Eric, and Mr. Connor was there asking if she was ok and telling her to stay laying there. • 4. All Dreams Can Come True If We Have Courage As Walt Disney once said "All dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them." Courage is something that everyone is born with, but only some are courageous enough to find it and put it to use. Merriam Webster 's defines courage as "Mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty." Courage can overcome any obstacle, proving that if we have courage any dream truly can come true. As readers we must understand that there are going to be times in life when we must use courage. By reading about others, and learning how to find the courage within, the reader is able to learn that courage truly is self–identifiable. There may be people along the way to help one find courage. However, it is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "The next day he went on a live show on the voice of America and angrily condemned the attacks." It is very frightening to speak up against something so powerful and evil, example: The Taliban. However, if the whole world were to realize that the power of these hate groups comes from the creation of fear, maybe everyone would be a bit more like Malala's dad, and not have the fear to speak up for what is right. The author is trying to show us that no matter our circumstances we can all find the courage to fight for what we know is right. Malala is a prime example of courage because her life was put on the line. However, she walked the tightrope over the hate of the Taliban. She reached the tallest building and was able to achieve the greatest of accomplishments. Including being the youngest person ever nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Malala was able to accomplish many extraordinary things thanks to her courage. The next example of a quiet girl with a loud mind is Maya Angelou. Maya was born in Arkansas and raised with her grandma. For her whole life she never knew if she had parents, so she created the perspective that she had been abandoned and unwanted. Though a negative outlook, a realistic one for a child who had never received anything from the so–called "parents" that brought her into this cold, lonely world. "I wouldn't have to wonder whether I loved him or not, or have to answer "Does Daddy's baby want to go to California with Daddy?" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Examples Of Racism In Maya Angelou Throughout her life, Maya Angelou was ridiculed for the color of her skin and was treated differently because of it. So many racist people lived in her town and used her and the black community as a doormat. African Americans were restricted to certain things and, "did not have the same rights and privileges as whites" (Agins 8). Racism was a big problem in Maya Angelou's childhood, especially when she was eight. When Angelou was eight she helped her grandmother run the main store in Stamps. Momma rented out the house on the lot of her store to a poor white family. The girls would come by the store and demand things from Momma and Maya and would have to be addressed as "Miz". One day when they went to walk up the steps they saw Momma standing on the porch with arms crossed and slippers on and started imitating her. Maya was infuriated and wanted to hurt the girls but Momma taught Maya to let it roll off her back, seeing as though racism would be a continuous thing throughout her life (Angelou 29–32). Maya felt that, "Being a product (is 'victim' a better word?) of southern Negro upbringing, I decided that I 'would understand it all better by–and–by'" (Angelou 276). Angelou found it easier to be brought up through a segregated area where she was taunted and walked all over just for being black daily rather than finding it out later in life. As a child Maya Angelou was constantly moved from Stamps to San Francisco and, "sympathizes with the plight of abandoned black ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Seconds later –– he discovered a small package wrapped heavily in special plastic. He gently unwrapped it, pulled it gently out of its metal container. Robbie slowly popped the lid open, and then carefully removed what appears to be a cute little bunny rabbit robot. Robbie nodded to Herman with a muddled grin, they both chuckled. • 10. Analysis Of The Lesson By Toni Cade Bambara "The Lesson" by Toni Cade Bambara is a story about a group of seven kids and is told in the point of view of Sylvia, one of the children that seems to be a leader of the group. The other children of the group were Sugar, Flyboy, Fat Butt, Junebug, Q.T., Rosie Giraffe, and Mercedes. They are taken to an upscale toy store by an elderly lady, named Miss Moore, who lives in their neighborhood and takes the responsibility of educating the children when they are not in school. Miss Moore takes the children to a high end toy store in the city to teach them about the value of money, and to show them how the wealth in America is not equally distributed. There are total of nine characters that play a role throughout the story, and each of them leave their own mark on the story. For the most part all of the children have a shocked reaction when learning the price of the toys they see at the toy store, but they do vary in the manner with which the react. In Rena Korb's critical essay on "The Lesson" she explains this at a deeper level, "Big Butt reacts on a visceral level. He sees the microscope and declares 'I'm going to buy that there,' when he is not even sure what a person uses a microscope to look at." (Korb). Junebug on the other hand reacts in a different way when being told what a paperweight was, and how much this particular one cost "he figures she 'crazy or lyin' because 'we don't keep paper on top of the desk in my class.'" (Korb). There is also one of the children who seems to be a little different from the rest, Mercedes. When Miss Moore explains what a paperweight is and how it is used to keep paper on top of a desk, she is the only one who says she has a desk at home. Another instance where we see Mercedes react differently than the other children is when everyone is shocked by the price of the sailboat being over one thousand dollars; commenting how they would buy parts from a store to build their own for less than a dollar, she says "My father'd but it for me if I wanted it." (Bambara, p. 149). These are only a few examples of how the characters differ from each other, but all of them together make the story great; the way Bambara was able to tie everything in and make the characters relate to one another despite their differences is why this story should be read in this ... • 12. Calipurnia Research Paper As I am reading this story, I questioned whether Calipurnia or Aunt Alexandra is a better mom. I think Calipurnia is a better mom for many different reasons. She puts more time into the kids than Aunt Alexandra, and she genuinely cares for the kids and wants to keep them safe. To start off with, Calipurnia puts a lot more time into the kids than Aunt Alexandra does. On many occasions Calipurnia has made things for Scout and Jem to eat or drink like a mother would. For example, she said, "she did give Jem a hot biscuit–and–butter which he tore in half and shared with me" (Lee 137). This shows that not only would Calipurnia make their every meal, but she would sometimes give the kids some snacks while she was cooking in the kitchen too. In addition, Scout said that, "We skulked around the kitchen until Calipurnia threw us out" (Lee 137). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is one of the only ones that use the kitchen, and when she is in there, she is the one in charge. Not only does Calipurnia spend a lot of time making the Finch's food, but she also has spent a lot of her life working for the Finches. Here Calipurnia said, "I've spent all my days workin' for the Finches" (Lee 166). What she meant by that is that from as long as she could remember she was working for the Finches. From all of the time that she has spent with them she has almost become a loyal member of the Finches herself. Not to mention, Atticus later said, "I couldn't have got along with out her all these years" (Lee 182). This shows that Calipurnia has been with them for a long time, and that she has done a lot that Atticus probably have done with out her. The author uses many different strategies and techniques in this book that enhance the reading experience, there were not too many dull moments and It always left me wanting more. My main theme is appearances and disguises vs reality and how people are not always what they seem, Richard Cory is a great example of this, but does this type of stuff happen in real life? The answer is yes they do, one real world example is when Adolf Merckle killed himself, he was a father of four and in 2008 the 94th richest person in the world. Sylvia mentions how she would rather "snatch Sugar and go to the Sunset and terrorize the West Indian kids" but Sugar doesn't mention this plans but this could be because we don't have insight into Sugar's thoughts. As the story progresses we see that both Sylvia's and Sugar's character undergo some changes. While they were both affected by the event of the day, I believe that Sugar was more affected. When Miss Moore asks what do thinks about the society "in which some people can spend on a toy what it could cost to feed a family of six or seven" Sugar responds by saying that "equal chance to pursue happiness means an equal crack at the dough, don't it?" To Kill A Mockingbird Analysis "A study by Psychologist Susan Segerstrom found that ten years after graduating, law students who were optimistic earned an average of $32,667 more than their glass–half–empty peers." (Warrell) According to Margie Warrell, in her article, "Why Optimists Are Happier, Healthier and Wealthier!", people who are optimistic about life have more opportunities and pessimistic people fall behind. This article connects to the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, by stating that looking for the positive side of life will only give positive results. The story of To Kill a Mockingbird is about Atticus Finch, a white lawyer who attempts to defend an innocent black man, and is told through the eyes of his intelligent and innocent young daughter, Scout. As Scout grows up, she encounters many people who make her angry, but instead of letting these people bring her down, she uses them to learn how to find the good in people. When children grow up facing difficult problems with the people in their lives, they learn to look for the positive aspects of people and treat them with respect. Neighbors can be hard to deal with, but they also help children learn an important lesson about staying positive during difficult times. This is clearly shown throughout the book with the character named Mrs. Dubose. The relationship between Elizabeth and Victor lead to the assumption that possession of someone results in some sort of an intimate relationship: "my more than sister, since till death she was to be mine only" (Shelley, 37). The tone of this passage is incredibly possessive. It seems as if the only reason Victor is giving any praise or importance to Elizabeth is because she is his until death. Due to the powerful proprietorial tone of this line, I got the impression that Victor believes he is the only one who gets to decide when Elizabeth can die. Another tone I get from this line, is a sense of pride. He doesn't actually have pride toward Elizabeth, but rather he has pride in the fact that she was his and only his. Victor's first possessive experience with a relationship imprinted–how his next relationships throughout his life would go. After going away to school, Victor felt quite isolated and longed for a friend or an equal. He obsessed over the thought of possessing an equal to the point of him bringing a creature to life. He dedicated all of his energy and time into creating the ultimate equal who was beautiful and as intelligent as he, but immediately after the creature came to life, Victor was disgusted: "I felt the bitterness of disappointment; dreams that had been my food and pleasant rest for so long a space were now become a hell to me" (Shelley, 59,60). • 22. Comparison Of The Price And Stephen King's Misery The last two plays that I have seen on Broadway were Arthur Miller's The Price, and Stephen King's Misery. Both plays were extremely interesting and captivating to watch because of their simple set design, small cast, and concentrated, straightforward plot. Similarly, these plays employed non–exaggerated direction, and focused on more subtle movements and stage direction to focus on the focal point of the scene. Both plays were mainly dramas, so the direction caused the plays to feel more personal and visceral. In Arthur Miller's The Price, one significant stage picture that stood out was a scene where Gregory Solomon (played by Danny Devito) is eating an egg downstage right center, while Victor Franz (played by Mark Ruffalo) stands in center stage having an argument with Solomon. Solomon was directed to sit further downstage than Franz in order to pull the audiences attention towards his actions. In the scene, Devito devours a hard–boiled egg while trying to explain furniture appraisal to Ruffalo; Devito never stopped talking and eating (doing both at the same time). This direction to not break dialogue further intrigued the audience because it pulled the audiences attention towards Devito and the question of when he would finish. The physicality of the stage picture was not excessive or magnified to draw attention, yet the scene was compelling because of the focused attention on detail and realism in character movement and direction. At the end of the trip, Miss Moore hoped the children understood that they have a choice and opportunity to be successful and have a better life. "She concluded the journey by asking the children to explain what they learned". (Cartwright 62) I recall growing up when my mother would lecture me prior entering a store. My mother would say, when we go in the store, do not touch anything because she did not have money to pay for broken items; or do you have the money to pay for it? I grew up poor, on welfare, and lived in the projects, so I can relate to Sylvia. However, my mother instilled in me that being poor do not define me, but that education is vital for survival. Just because one the lack resources for a better education, do not mean one must give up; perseverance and determination make you strong. If you think it, you can achieve it was my mother's motto. • 35. The Outsiders Similarities Between Dally And Johnny People tend to keep company with people that share many qualities and opinions with them. That being said, no two people can be entirely identical. This is certainly the case with Johnny Cade and Dallas Winston from the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Johnny and Dally are in similar situations due to them both having neglectful parents and both placing minimal value on their lives. Despite their similarities, Dally and Johnny have very different opinions on how Ponyboy should be and on the law itself. So it is clear to see that Johnny Cade and Dally Winston are similar and dissimilar at the same time. One very important similarity between Johnny and Dally is that they both have neglectful and abusive parents. For instance, it is blatantly... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, in the letter that Johnny left behind for Ponyboy to find he says about the children they saved at the church, "Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for" (178). This statement, in every way, shows how little value Johnny places on his own life. Rather than being afraid of death he is saying how he is fine with dying because his life is not worth as much as the lives of the children him and Pony saved at the flaming church in Windrixville. Correspondingly, Dally does not give very much worth to his life either. After Johnny dies, Dally goes on a suicide mission and when he dies Ponyboy says of him, "I knew he would be dead, because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted" (154). Dally wants to be dead and purposely drives the police to the point of killing him. The fact that Dally wants to die proves that he does not place much worth to his life. Overall, it is very evident that both Dally and Johnny deem their lives as not very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Celebrities Acting with Humanism In the reading "Existentialism is a Humanism", the author Jean–Paul Sartre presents the idea of Existentialism. He introduces this idea by stating that man's plan in this world is not pre–determined, as we only determine who we are or who we want to become throughout life. Sartre states that a person is what a person does. He also uses a metaphoric scenario of a man jumping on a scene before defining himself. These two ideas imply that man has no ultimate meaning, and it is up to us to find it through experience and by taking action. Additionally, Sartre also implies that humans have a huge responsibility on becoming who they want to become as it is only up to them to do so, making us entirely responsible for our existence. Sartre states that, "when we say that man is responsible for himself, we do not mean that he is responsible for his own individuality, but that he is responsible for all men." This quote implies that men are not only responsible for their own lives but also responsible for the development of society as we are all an example to everyone that is born after us. Everyone that is new to this world looks up to their ancestors in order to see what they were like and to use them as a point of guidance in order to go through life. This quote also implies that men should behave in a way that improves this society because their actions will likely be replicated in the near future. An example of such behavior can be the one of a mother, as she is very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From this description, it is obvious that Wesley surrenders and caters his father's wish accepting everything his father requires him to do: like to be a sheriff, which even is a struggling occupation for him. The job "Sheriff" likes a burden for him but he still chooses it because the job is what his father designates to him, and until Frank dies, after he moves out of Montana, gets rid of his father's control, to the extent, he dismantles his suffering a little from his father's autocracy. • 39. O Pioneers By Willa Cather Analysis O Pioneers!: The Land and the American Dream It seems that everything in Willa Cather's O Pioneers!, aside from the land, starts out so full of life and ends so utterly devoid of it. It could even be said that the characters in the novel become imprisoned by their own lives. Marie is barred by her love, which, in the end, leaves her quite literally lifeless. Alexandra, who initially is so full of life, begins to view her life as unimportant and as a prison house. Even the spirituality of the pioneers is ever declining and dying away. Ultimately it is Frank who embodies the idea most obviously; in his youth Frank lives the life of a happy, handsome man, yet his life ends in utter despondence and literal imprisonment. How is it that all of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Alexandra puts her entire life into the land. In fact, Alexandra seems to exemplify the land itself. She epitomizes the American Dream and everything it stands for. She takes a raw piece of Nebraskan soil and works it until it becomes bountiful and she becomes wealthy and seemingly successful. In all of her success in achieving the American Dream, very little is said about Alexandra's own hopes and dreams. Though Alexandra is the only one to have achieved anything close to the American Dream, she is the only character to become completely downhearted. In the novel it is written that "she was actually tired of life" (112) and that "what was left of life seemed so unimportant" (113). She also relates life to a poem she loved as a girl, and the poem reads as follows: Hence Forth the world will only be/A wider prison–house to me...(118). Regardless of the fact that Alexandra signifies everything that is the American Dream, she is still unhappy with and imprisoned by life. It is not until she indulges in her own dream, the companionship of Carl Linstrum that she begins to see life in an optimistic light. Another element soiled by the standards of America is the spirituality of the pioneers. The best example of this is illustrated in the novel's character Ivar. While the church itself rejects Ivar and most of Hanover wants to send him to an asylum, he is probably one of the most spiritual people in the entire prairie. Ivar has a personal relationship ... Abortion As Depicted In The Film: Frank And April Wheeler Frank and April Wheeler are a typical suburban couple living in the 1950s who are desperately trying to hold on to their individualism and whose dream is to live an interesting life. With the suburbs growing increasingly popular after the war, the Wheelers decide to move to the little town of 115 Revolutionary Road. The film does a wonderful job portraying the dullness of conformity by giving its characters a subtle but very tangible lifelessness. Frank Wheeler, who has a beautiful wife, two healthy children, a stable office job, and lives in a pleasant middle–class suburban neighborhood, leads a pretty unsatisfactory existence, and so does his wife. At first glance, they seem like the perfect young couple, and most of their neighbors would completely agree. Although Frank's character lives on, it is unfortunate to see that despite his increased commitment to his work, he is more lifeless than before. The end of the film leaves the audience wondering whether society and the time period are really to blame for the Wheeler's misery. I think the take–home message is that we should not blind ourselves to the beautiful things that are right in front of us. In the pursuit of happiness, it seems like we sometimes don't realize what it is we already have. Nevertheless, Suburbia is not to blame for the Wheeler's misery, and film does a wonderful job illustrating how all families, including those of the 1950s, have problems of their own. Certainly, when your identity stops being about what you are "going to be" and starts being about what you "are" and that "are" contradicts your aspirations, a lot of frustration is likely to arise. Thus, it becomes less about the time period and more about two individuals falling short from finding their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
