MS-DOS stand for Microsoft disk operating
system.
Most popular operating system used in MS.
It is a non-graphical textual user interface
operating system.

5. FUNCTIONS OF DOS
It translates the commands in such a language that
can be interpreted by the CPU and give result.
It works as an interpreter which establishes a link
between hardware and software.
6. DOS-COMMANDS:-
INTERNAL
COMMANDS
These are automatically
stored in the memory.
Collected in
COMMAND.COM
program file.
e.g. DIR,MD,CD,RD etc.
EXTERNAL COMMAND
Either stored on floppy
disk or hard disk.
Not collected in
COMMAND.COM
program file.
e.g.FORMAT,TREE,CHK
DSK etc.
7. INTERNAL COMMANDS
COPY CON
PURPOSE:-to create a file in directory or sub directory.
Syntax:-c:>COPY CON<File name>
8. PURPOSE:- used to create a new directory or sub
directory.
Syntax:- c:>MD directory name
MD (MAKE DIRECTORY)
9. Purpose :- used to clear the display screen and
redisplay the DOS prompt at the upper left corner of the
screen.
Syntax : X:> CLS

10. EXTERNAL COMMANDS:-
EDIT
PURPOSE :- used to create a new file or modify the
contents of an existing file.
Syntax:- c:1>EDIT<File Name>
11. Purpose :- used to change the attribute of a file i.e. user
can use ATTRIB to make a file “read only” which prevent
the file from the change of contents.
Syntax :- C:> ATTRIB filename

12. Purpose :- used to restore file copied by BACKUP
command.
Syntax :- C:> RESTORE<< Source path>>/option
