DOS is a single user operating system. Single user Operating
System is most popular in micro-computer upto mid of 1990’s .
It’s also called DOS because it is store on a Disk of a Computer

The Written Instructions Input by USER in Computer for any type
of working in DOS are called COMMAND.
Different types of command using for different types of works in
DOS.
5. TYPES OF COMMAND
There are two types of Command in Disk
operating System –
i. INTERNAL COMMAND
ii.EXTERNAL COMMAND

INTERNAL COMMAND
• These are those commands which are contained
in files of MS-DOS.
• These are those functions that are built into the
command interpreter.
• There is no need of any external file in computer
to read internal MS-DOS command.
• Internal commands do not vary from system to
system.
• These commands can be used as long as DOS is
running on the system.
EXTERNAL COMMAND
• These are those commands which are not in-
built in MS-DOS.
• These are those which are not included in the
interpreter.
• There is a need of an internal file in the
computer to read external MS-DOS command.
• External command may vary from system to
system.
• This means any two computers with same
version of MS-DOS may have same internal
commands, but may have different external
commands.
7. DOS Internal Commands
Some DOS internal Commands are-
DATE - Date stands for check the date of computer
CLS - CLS is use for clear the screen
VER - Display the DOS version Number
VOL - Display the Volume level and serial
TYPE - Display the contents of text.
COPY - Create a duplicate copy of file
MD - For making a New Directory
8. DOS External Commands
Some DOS External Commands are-
CHKDSK - Check the validity of disk and reports the total space, number
of files and amount of free space
COMMAND - Start the Command Processor
COMP - Compare the contents of two sets of files
+H / -H - For Hide any file/ Unhide of the hidden file
+R / -R - Convert File to Read-only/ convert into Normal mode
FIND - To find the Character or Word of file
MODE- Set up the command screen of different modes
9. How to access Command Prompt ?
Command prompt is easy to access, there are 4 common ways:
1. Type "cmd" in the start menu's search box and press enter.
2. Click on Run, then type "cmd" and press enter.
3. Click on all programs in the start menu, click accessories and then click on command prompt.
4. In Windows explorer, go to your hard drive's root and open the Windows directory, from here
open the system 32 directory and then scroll down until you find Command Prompt.
