3. DEMOGRAPHIC TRENDS OF MAHARASHTRA
• Maharashtra is the third largest state in India geographically and
second most populous state with 11,23,72,972 populations as per
2011 census.
• However, in terms of gender ratio, the rank of Maharashtra is 22nd
with sex ratio of 925 against 940 at national level as per 2011 census.

From the above chart, it can be seen that,
1. Growth rate of Uttar Pradesh is highest (16.5%) followed by Maharashtra (9.3%)
2. Growth of Jammu and Kashmir has been 1% followed by Haryana and Chhattisgarh with 2.1% growth rate

9. Sex Composition of Maharashtra:
The sex ratio is an important area of interest to anthropologists and demographers. Sex ratio is the number of
females per thousand males. The sex ratio changes from one area to another, from one age group to another
depending upon the age-specific mortality rates.
10. Urbanization in Maharashtra
• Maharashtra is the second most urbanized state in India with 45.28 percent of the population living in
urban areas during 2011. This huge population accounts for percent of India’s urban population in 2011.
• Till 1991 Maharashtra was on the first position. It was the most urbanized state of India; which privilege has
now gone to Tamil Nadu whose percent population is urban.
• The ratio of urban population is an important developmental indicator that influences the demography of
the region. The following table shows level of urbanization in Maharashtra State.
11. COMPOSITION OF MAHARASHTRA’S ECONOMY :
Maharashtra’s economy is primarily agricultural and rural. Agriculture is major occupation of the people in
Maharashtra. Both food and cash crops are grown in the State.

Maharashtra attracts many tourists from different states and foreigners too.
It was the second most visited Indian state by foreigners and fourth most visited state by
domestic tourists in the country in 2014.
Aurangabad is the tourism capital of Maharashtra.
Major urban cities include : Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, Nanded and Nagpur.
18. Export-Import
• Maharashtra is the second largest exporter of software with annual exports of ₹18,000 crores and
accounts for more than 30 per cent of the country's software exports.
• Maharashtra ranks first nationwide in coal-based thermal electricity as well as nuclear electricity
generation with national market shares of over 13% and 17% respectively.
• The most of the Export is of agricultural products.
19. TRANSPORT SECTOR
Road Transportation
The road infrastructure in the State is managed by various local bodies including Public Works
Department of the State, Municipal Corporation/Municipal Council/Nagar Panchayats, Cantonment Boards,
Maharashtra State Board Development Corporation, Forest Department Maharashtra Industrial Development
Corporation (MIDC), City and Industrial Development Corporation, etc.
The total road length maintained by Public Works Department and Zilla Parishad in the State was 2.43
lakhs kms. upto March, 2013, of which surface road length was 2.23 lakh kms. The total road length per hundred
sq. km. of geographical area was 79 km. & per lakh population was 213 km. in 2012-13. The total number of
vehicles registered in the State was 2,14,88,152 and number of motor vehicles per lakh population was 18,819 in
2012-13. As on 31st March, 2013, about 97.6 per cent villages were connected by all weather roads & 1.7 per
cent villages were connected by fair-weather roads. There are 41,126 villages in the State, out of which, 278
villages did not have any road connectivity.
20. Maharashtra has the largest network of highways in India with 18 national highways. The main national highways
in Maharashtra are: NH 3, NH 50, NH 69, NH 7, NH 17, NH 211, NH 204, NH 4, NH 8, NH 9, NH 13, NH 16, NH 4B,
NH 6, and NH 222.
21. Railway Transportation
The state is well-connected to other parts of the country with a railway network spanning
5,983 km between four Railways.

23. Air Transportation
• Most of the State's airfields are operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) while Reliance Airport
Developers (RADPL), currently operate five non – metro airports at Latur, Nanded, Baramati, Osmanabad
and Yavatmal on a 95-year lease.
• The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) was set up in 2002 to take up development of
airports in the state that are not under the AAI or the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation
(MIDC). MADC is playing the lead role in the planning and implementation of the Multi-modal International
Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) project.[10]
• Maharashtra has three international airports:
Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (among the busiest airports in India);
Pune Airport with flights to Dubai, Frankfurt and Sharjah;
Nagpur's Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport.
Nashik Airport serves domestic flights.
• Airports at Akola, Amravati, Baramati, Chandrapur, Dhule, Gondia, Jalgaon, Karad, Kolhapur, Latur, Nashik
Road Airport, Nanded, Osmanabad, Ratnagiri, Solapur and Yavatmal do not have any scheduled air services.
• There are also private airstrips at Aamby Valley City and Shirpur.
