EVALUATION QUESTION 2- HOW
DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?
 My media product “Revenant” represents
various social groups, mainly being age and
class.Which are demonstrated through
race, age and class.
Race
 This is challenged as there isn’t a mix of different
races represented in my thriller opening.
 However the main character in the opening looks
Asian, which doesn’t really challenge any
stereotypes of race.
 For example a stereotype of race can be a black
man stealing a car.
 On the other hand as there is only one character
in this you cannot challenger or develop any of
the stereotypes.
 Also as there is no dialogue there isn’t any
elements of a typical Asian accent.
 Either Mis-en-scene or camera angles in the
film doesn’t represent race in any specific
way.
 As the character is Asian there are no
stereotypical references towards the
character.
 An example of this could be the typical Asian
attire or any signs of religious aspects.
Age
 Age is displayed through costumes that the
girl is wearing is what a typical teenager
would wear.
 The main character’s face is young which will
draw in a young audience around the ages of
15 and above.
 During the beginning of the opening the girl
is running up the road.
 This could be seen as another stereotype as she
is running away from trouble. As usual teenagers
always get in to mischief.
 The types of camera shots and transitions that
were used in the opening illustrated her as being
weak as we used various high angled shots
demonstrating her feeling powerless and
isolated.
 An example of this is when the character hears
all the doors slam the facial expressions and the
camera shots made her seem defenceless.
Class
 Class is represented through the main
character as she looks like an average
working middle-classed adolescent.
 This is where it challenges stereotypes again.
 As we usually see poor classes that live in
blocks of flats getting in to trouble a lot more
than a middle class teenage girl.
 In addition the location of where it is set is in
a working middle-class with modern houses.
 Which is of decent size and an average
middle class household.
 The way that the camera shots and angles
display what the house looks like inside
developing the look of a modern middle class
home.
