Before becoming Vice President of Plexos Group in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Kirk Fisher worked for The Advocate, a leading Louisiana news source. In his role as director of operations there, Kirk Fisher also was a member of the Newspaper Association of America, which has since been renamed the News Media Alliance. In January 2021, News Media Alliance announced that it would join the National Newspaper Association to challenge a mandate to remove the current statutory cap on postal rate increases for periodicals and mail marketing. The Postal Regulatory Commission established the order in question, to allow the U.S. Postal Service to raise postage for newspapers by nine percent every year for the next five years. Under the current system, newspapers are being provided with smaller, predictable rate increases; this has helped sustain the volume of mail circulation. News Media Alliance and supporting groups believe that removing the cap would raise postage costs greatly, culminating in a loss of volume and revenue and crippling the U.S. postal system. According to the organization, the rapid rate increases could also result in smaller and community-based papers closing their doors. This could be disastrous for communities who primarily receive news through these channels, further alienating people from information and current events.
