Most tennis points end with the victor
achieving a winner or the loser being
charged with an error or unforced error.
3. A winner occurs when one player cleanly
strikes the ball and places it onto the
opponent’s court. The ball must pass the other
player or bounce twice, thus ending the point,
without the opponent making any contact
with the ball for the shot to be considered a
winner.
Making a determination between unforced
and forced errors is a bit more difficult. An
unforced error is charged to a player when he
or she is in a balanced position to hit the ball
and, due to a failure of stroke mechanics,
mishits the ball into the net or out of the court.
4. Forced errors, meanwhile, share the
same result as unforced errors. Forced
errors generally result from of an
aggressive, well-placed shot by the
opponent. If a player reaches the ball
and can place a racket on it but is in no
position to make an actual play, they will
be charged as having committed a
forced error.
