2.  Kirk Fisher teaches graduate level courses in
business administration at Louisiana State
University. He also fills the position of executive
in residence at the school. Kirk Fisher, who also
leads Plexos Group and Fisher Real Estate,
plays in a band with a number of other
business professionals. The band performs at
various fundraisers and charity events
throughout Louisiana.
Starting a band is a fun and creative process
that begins by identifying which instruments
you and your band mates would like to play.

3.  The genre of music the band will play can
dictate what instruments are needed. For
example, ska music is often defined by up-
tempo reggae chords accompanied by a
horns section, meaning one or more horns
will be needed. Instruments can serve
interchangeable purposes in most bands.
The guitar, for instance, is one of the most
popular instruments across all genres. If
desired, a guitar’s melodic presence can
be replicated by a piano.

4.  Similarly, most bands will require a rhythm
section that drives the tempo of each song.
The most common rhythm section is formed
by a bassist and drummer. In all-acoustic
bands, a rhythm guitarist may suffice for a
rhythm section, while many musical genres
can utilize a drum machine or some other
electronic resource rather than a live drum
kit. At the end of the day, any collection of
instruments can be used to form a band so
long as the musicians are passionate about
playing.
