Deception In The Tragedy Of Hamlet
In Shakespeare's play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the main character,
Hamlet deceives others through the need to get revenge for his father's death . Hamlet's deception
and need for revenge continues to cause him to question himself and his existence. In doing this, he
is an indecisive character . Hamlet is additionally deceiving his own friends and family, causing
them to feel the pain just so he avenge his father's honor. The meaning of the play as a whole is that
deceit bears no certainty in life and death. How can one make a lasting impact when they can so
easily be forgotten when they die? Hamlet is constantly questioning the significance of worth in life
and death. He is hesitant to murder the king because he questions the sincerity of the ... Show more

Hamlet intended to mislead is friends, family and himself although he did not intend for the killing
of one another in the final act. Without deception there would be no tragic events happening in the
play. Weather it was good or bad deception is the man part of the story. If the betraying did not
Kelley 5 happen then the main part of the story would not exist. Claudius would not have killed the
king.
The queen would not have betrayed the king and Hamlet and Hamlet would not be acting insane.
Also everyone would still be alive and no pain would happen in the country of Denmark. The pain
and deception through the story shows the forshadowing and tragic events that Shakespear is trying
to portray. Hamlet tells about deception within the Kingdom, "O'villain, villain, smiling, damned
villain!/My tables – meet it is I set it down/ The one may smile, and smile, and be a villian./ At least
I'm sure it may be so in Denmark." (1.5.113–16) Others like

Be you and I behind an arras than./Make the encounter:" (2.2.176–78) This is

Ophelia and Hamlet in The Tragedy of Hamlet Essay
Ophelia and Hamlet
In 1600, William Shakespeare composed what is considered the greatest tragedy of all time, Hamlet,
the tragedy of the Prince of Denmark. His masterpiece forever redefined what tragedy should be.
Critics have analyzed it word for word for nearly four hundred years, with each generation
appreciating Hamlet in its own way. While Hamlet conforms, without a doubt, to Aristotle's
definition of a tragedy, one question still lingers. Did Shakespeare intend for the reader or viewer of
Hamlet to feel greater sympathy for Hamlet, or for Ophelia, Hamlet's lover? Both characters tug at
the heartstrings throughout the play, but it is clear that 'the tragedy of the Prince of Denmark' is a
misrepresentation of Shakespeare's true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems clear that Ophelia, in her madness, knows what others "may be." She has become
enlightened in her insanity. Unfortunately, because of her suicide, Ophelia is never given the chance
to know what she herself might have been. Clearly though, Ophelia does change greatly from act 1
to act 4. She transforms from a simple and innocent young girl into a mad, unsettled and knowing
woman. What brings on these changes in Ophelia? One significant cause is the aforementioned
attempted 'education' by Ophelia's brother, Laertes.
When Laertes gives his brotherly advise to Ophelia, in act 1, scene 3, he speaks of more that just
Hamlet's love for Ophelia. Laertes warns Ophelia that Hamlet is toying with her affection in lines
14–18:
... Perhaps he loves you now,
And now no soil nor cautel doth besmirch
The virtue of his will, but you must fear,
His greatness weighed, his will is not his own,
or he himself is subject to his birth. (1.3.14–18)
According to Laertes, Hamlet could not possibly love Ophelia because his is a prince and Ophelia a
mere maid. Hamlet is bound by his regency to love and marry a princess of equal rank and stature.
In lines 30–33, Laertes preaches the importance of Ophelia's chastity:
If with too credent ear you list his songs,
Or lose your heart, or your chaste treasure open
To his unmustered importunity.
Fear it, Ophelia, fear it, my dear

The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare
N. Julian
A tragedy is a dramatic work that is about a character whose tragic flaw leads to his downfall and to
the demise of many of the other characters. William Shakespeare was a playwright during the
Elizabethan Era who was made famous for his literary works of tragedies, comedies and sonnets.
One of Shakespeare?s most renowned tragedies is Hamlet. In this classic tragedy the protagonist,
Hamlet, pursues revenge and seeks justice against the antagonist, Claudius, for the murder of King
Hamlet. As a result of his pursuits, Hamlet, his family, and most of his acquaintances all meet the
same demise: death. Through the characters in Hamlet, Shakespeare incorporates the concept of how
often the thoughts and actions of people can be contradictory to their true motives. Shakespeare?s
Hamlet contains the reoccurring themes of disguise and deceit; the deceitful actions of Claudius
cause the other characters to disguise their thoughts, actions, and emotions. In Act I, scene IV, a
supernatural figure appears to young Hamlet and he is quite shaken because the figure looks
frighteningly familiar to him. ?Be thy intents wicked or charitable, / Thou comest in such a
questionable shape, / That I will speak to thee.?[endnoteRef:2] ?Hamlet questions if the Ghost could
be the ghost of his dead father or a demon in disguise. The Ghost claims that one night while he was
alive and sleeping in the garden, Claudius poured poison into his ear which killed him. Claudius

The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare
Why has Hamlet's rage led him to a death that was destined to happen? Simple, his absolute motive
was to seek revenge for the death of his father, who was once the King of Denmark. In this tragedy,
Hamlet wanted to put on this image of an insane man. This would mislead the people around him
from his intentions of killing King Claudius, who is strangely his uncle and "father" simultaneously.
Claudius takes the throne for Denmark after pouring poison down King Hamlet's ear without
leaving any evidence behind. With this given information, the play begins with an apparition making
appearances at the ramparts of the Elsinore Castle of Denmark. Readers soon discover that the ghost
resembling figure is in fact Prince Hamlet's father. As The Tragedy of Hamlet unfolds, William
Shakespeare provides imagery through strong and complex dialogue. Shakespeare allowed Hamlet
to lose himself in his own madness to create foreshadowing and confounding plots. When Prince
Hamlet is first introduced in the play, he is in a gloomy mental state. He does not tolerate the
gathering King Claudius had put together to discuss his recent marriage and the death of Hamlet's
father. In addition, Hamlet is the only person dressed from head to toe in black at this event. The
representation of his clothing is to show his mourning and sadness for his father. When young
Hamlet is left alone, he expresses words of hatred and sorrow. "O, that this too too solid flesh would

Hamlet's Views : Hamlet, And The Tragedy Of Hamlet
Thousands of people come up with thousands of views on Hamlet, for me, this is the most powerful
work from Shakespeare. It is focusing on a specific tragedy of Hamlet, prince of Denmark, but
reflects the tragedy of the whole age. Discussing "murder, revenge, pressure, desire" those
philosophical and ethical issues, Hamlet told us to build a society that is rational, orderly, and moral;
and criticize human nature of evil and negative desire.
Hamlet is about revenge of Hamlet, whose father, the king of Denmark was killed by Claudius,
Hamlet's uncle and king's brother. Claudius became the new king, married with dead king's wife,
Gertude, Hamlet's mother. One night, Hamlet met his father's ghost, who told him the truth of his
death, Hamlet was so angry, but decided to find out whether the ghost spoke truly, he acted crazy,
and managed a perform in which he added the scene that describe king's death, resulted in Claudius
left mad, convincing he killed the king, Hamlet swore to kill him, but because of so many reasons,
he hesitated,. Claudius tried plenty of ways to send Hamlet abroad and kill him. Polonius, a minister
who killed by Hamlet by accident, his daughter, Ophelia, the one Hamlet fell in love with, drawn
under the pressure of her father's death and Hamlet's heartless. Laertes, Polonius son back to
Denmark, decided to kill Hamlet to revenge for his father and sister. In the end, under the
management of Claudius, Laertes and Hamlet both died in each other's poisoned

Hamlet : The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare
Shakespeare's brilliant play is still forming the thoughts of people today. The theme of Hamlet has
been debated throughout all of literary and Shakespeare's history, and is likely the most tragic play
of Shakespeare's tragedies. It is a worrisome twist of passion and tragedies, that feels like it will
never end, until it abruptly does. Hamlet will do anything to avenge his father's murder, even if it
means damaging himself and all of the people around him, while disobeying his own morals;
Hamlet believes that murdering Claudius is moral, because Claudius killed his own father, and he is
just mimicking his sin. Hamlet swore he would avenge his father, which caused the downfall and
ruination of himself and almost everyone associated with him. The Ghost speaks to Hamlet
demanding vengeance and says "Thus was I, sleeping, by a brother's hand Of life, of crown, of
queen at once dispatched, Cut off, even in the blossoms of my sin... With all my imperfections on
my head" (1.5.81–86). He found comfort in seeing his father's Ghost, but he did not find it
comforting when his father told him Claudius was the one who poured poison in his father's ear as
he slept. Dismally Hamlet's father still had many sins at the time of his murder, but instead of
remorse he only seeks retribution. The Ghost tells Hamlet to let guilt do his mother's damage, by
telling him "Leave her to heaven And to those thorns that in her bosom lodge To prick and sting her"
(1.5.94–96). Although Hamlet is not

Macbeth and Hamlet Tragedies Essay
At a time for war, Both Hamlet and Macbeth are considered tragedies and both main characters are
considered tragic heroes. There are many differences and similarities. For one, both have somewhat
of a psychotic, mental breakdown at some point of the story. Hamlet is just acting crazy to deceive
Claudius, while Macbeth has truly gone mad in his lust for power and selfish motives. Both are to
become Royalty, with the only exception that Hamlet does it through dishonorable means. "For in
my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires. The eye wink at
the hand, yet let that be Which the eye fears, when it is done, to see" Macbeth (1.4 57–60). Hamlet
is an automatic heir to the throne if his uncle dies. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Horatio puts it, "Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince, And flights of angels sing
thee to thy rest." Hamlet (5.2 97–98). On the other hand, even though he dies in battle on the battle
field, Macbeth isn't able to die honorably, because of all the lives he has taken, purely for his own
potential need. So says Macduff as he enters with Macbeth's head. "Hail, King! for so thou art.
Behold where stands Th' usurper's cursèd head. The time is free. I see thee compassed with thy
kingdom's pearl," Macbeth (5.8 65–67)
When it comes to decision making, Hamlet takes a long time to finally decide to seek the revenge he
promised his deceased fathers ghost. He tends to over think matters and oftentimes complicate them
more than necessary. "Of thinking too precisely on th' event (A thought which, quartered, hath but
one part wisdom And ever three parts coward), I do not know Why yet I live to say "This thing's to
do," Sith I have cause, and will, and strength, and means To do't" Hamlet (4.4 43–49) In contrast,
Macbeth acts very quickly and rashly. He doesn't think about what he does, before he does it, and is
manipulated easily. Finally, when it came down to killing someone, in both of the plays, there were
moral dilemmas preventing both of the killers from performing the evil task they so closely guarded.
During Hamlets time period, revenge was condemned amongst society; which prevented

Hamlet and The Spanish Tragedy
The parallels shown between Hamlet and The Spanish Tragedy demonstrate the influence Kyd's
play had on Shakespeare. The similarities can be seen throughout the plot lines and context of both
plays. While using the plays as different tools, both are used for expediting revenge. Shakespeare,
through the impact of Kyd's play, established and perfected an ideal plot for a play expressing
revengeful tragedy. The actions and thoughts that Hamlet shows greatly displays many
characteristics from The Spanish Tragedy. Hamlet models himself after Hieronimo in the way he
approaches revenge. However, Hamlet wants his victims to suffer not only on earth but in the
afterlife. Kyd and Shakespeare utilize both meta–theaters to exact revenge and reveal guilt. The
intention of a play within a play by Kyd is used for the format of Hieronimo's death. It varies from
that of Hamlet in layout and context. Hamlet plans precisely how he will avenge his father's death
and when he will strike. Hamlet exclaims, "When he is...about some act/ That has no relish of
salvation in't––/ Then trip him...And that his soul may be damned and black/ As hell" (Shakespeare
III.iv.94–100). Killing Claudius in a sinful state will satisfy him, his father, and affect him by
suffering in the afterlife as well. Hieronimo also plots his revenge, but is solely concerned with
achieve earthly revenge. The Spanish Tragedy includes a play that is longer in duration than that of
Hamlet. Kyd does this to allow the audience to

The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet (1603), was written in a time period in which society
was dramatically different than it is today. For the most part, women had subservient roles and were
treated as the weaker, lesser gender. Given the contrast in behavior that was considered acceptable,
modern day readers struggle to understand the natural feelings of the characters and may have
difficulty relating to them. The Tragedy of Hamlet dives into the base of human philosophy,
submerged in the emotions and sensitivity of the main character, Hamlet, while he struggles with a
devastating point in his life. Due to her subconscious foolishness and innocence paired with unjust
social expectations, Gertrude cannot individually be labeled ... Show more content on

She performs acts similar to this throughout the play because she truly wants Hamlet to recover
from his depressed feelings. When Rosencrantz and Guildenstern come for Hamlet (II.I.1) she
believes it is for the benefit of her son. Meanwhile, Claudius is planning to use them as pawns in his
overall plan. Also being used by Polonius and Claudius is Ophelia, Hamlet's love interest. Gertrude
tells her, "Ophelia, I do wish that your good beauties be the cause of Hamlet's wildness; so shall I
hope your virtues will bring him to his wonted way again" (III.I.43–46). This statement reveals the
true character in Gertrude, in that she is clueless to the real cause of her son's despair but also that
she legitimately cares for those around her. The actual reason Ophelia was with their family was to
draw information out of Hamlet at the instruction of her father and the king. It is understandable
why Gertrude wants her only son to recover, because she adores him as seen several times in the
play. Everybody knows it as well; while Polonius and Claudius were discussing plans to damage
Hamlet Claudius says, "...the queen his mother lives almost by his looks.." (IV.VII.13–14) as to
indicate that Gertrude must not know about it because she is devoted to him. Professor Bradley adds
that "she was fond of Ophelia and genuinely

Tragic Approaches In Hamlet : The Tragedy Of Hamlet
The traditional revenge tragedy approach is defined as an entire story is centered around the idea to
right a wrong. In almost every revenge tragedy, there are the basic components of "a play within a
play, mad scenes, a vengeful ghost, one or several gory scenes, and, most importantly, a central
character who has a serious grievance against a formidable opponent" (Mabillard). This list is spot
on including everything vital in creation of the play of Hamlet. The ghost of Hamlet's father who
exposed Claudius as a murderer is the motive for Hamlet's madness and anger towards not only
Claudius, but his mother who married him as well, growing throughout the play, therefore also
increasing conflict inside of himself on how to seek revenge and when is the best time. In the third
act, when Hamlet mistakes Polonius for the King behind a curtain and stabs him attempting revenge,
a new source of revenge is now created as Laertes is vengeful of his father, and then his sister
Ophelia's death, after she drowned from going mad as a result Hamlet's rejection. In the end, Laertes
avenges the loss of his father and sister by fatally wounding Hamlet with a poisoned sword with
Claudius's help. However, before Hamlet's death he realizes Claudius's interaction and goes to kill
him, finally getting revenge on his father's death – marking the end of this revenge tragedy.
Existentialism, also known as philosophical, is an approach that emphasizes the sense of
disorientation and confusion in an apparent uncaring world where each and every person must
define their own moral code by their choices, responsibilities and freedom. Everything one does is
based on other previous choices made and followed by action, which is a problem for Hamlet who
cannot follow through on making self–defining decisions. In his famous "to be or not to be" quote,
Hamlet is caught between living out this pain and disgust from his father's murder and avenge his
death, or just to commit suicide to end and avoid everything surrounding him at once. Besides this
internal conflict, Hamlet also suffers other existential characteristics such as alienation when
everyone around him thinks of him as a madman and absurdity because before his father's death he
had no

The Importance Of Tragedy In Hamlet
The word 'tragedy' is a common in the modern world, and it is often associated with a "sad or
unhappy ending". Accordingly, every time there is misfortune in a work, it is classified as a
'tragedy'. Arthur Miller offers the observation that a tragedy is something that is more than just sad.
Miller argues that tragedy is not a 'pessimistic' view on an event, but it allows for "the reinforcement
of the onlookers brightest opinions of the human animal". Since humans are not in control of his/her
own fate, unfortunate things are bound to happen. However, the human spirit that is able to
withstand catastrophe allows for hope. In the play Hamlet, Shakespeare presents his tragic hero,
Hamlet, as a noble figure who is to be admired because he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Hamlet has the opportunity to kill Claudius when he is praying, but does not because he is fearful
that Claudius will go to heaven despite his crimes. Hamlet is admirable in not killing Claudius while
praying because Hamlet wants a revenge worthy of his father and himself. While keeping up his act,
Hamlet kills Polonius, Ophelia dies and Claudius and Laertes construct a death plot against Hamlet.
Claudius and Laertes plan ironically spins out of control and them both himself killed and the queen
killed. Although Hamlet also dies in the process, Hamlet justly kills Claudius with the poisoned
dagger and the poisoned drink. The final image of most of the characters on the stage being dead
provides a superficial pessimistic ending. However, the ability for Hamlet to maintain his honor
when all odds were against him provides a great sense of hope in the audience. Also, the exchange
of forgiveness from Laertes to "noble Hamlet" also provides an optimistic ending. Upon the arrival
of prince Fortinbras, Hamlet is given a soldier's funeral of the highest honors which allows for a
promising ending.
Throughout his plan, Hamlet maintains his honor and his actions allow for "the reinforcement of the
onlookers brightest opinions of the human animal". Hamlet's death is unfair, but his integrity leaves
the audience with a sense of hope. Hamlet's physical prosperity is in fates hands, but his moral
prosperity was

Hamlet : A Classic Revenge Tragedy
Hamlet is not like any tragedy. Hamlet is a classic revenge tragedy. All the revenge tragedies were
popular in England during the late 16th and early 17th. A Shakespearean tragedy is built upon a
central conflict which runs through from the beginning to the end of the tragedy until the conflict is
finally resolved. The play is built upon the long, tragic conflict between Hamlet and Claudius and
the conflict is built upon the figure of revenge. The Driving points that shapes the plot of play are
exposition, gradual development of the plot, the suspense, climax and the catastrophe of the play is
the revenge. Especially, the revenge for his father death. But it wasn't just hamlet that wanted
revenge, it was also Laertes that also acted as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ghost also tells Hamlet that he has been given the role of the person who will take revenge upon
Claudius. Like a typical revenge tragedy, in Hamlet a crime is committed and for various reasons
laws and justice cannot punish the crime so the individual, Hamlet proceeds on to take revenge in
spite of everything. Hamlet must now think of how to take on Claudius, although he doesn't know
what to do about it. He ponders his thoughts for a long period of times, expecting to do the act
immediately, but instead he drags it on until the end of the play. The conflict of the play get further
development when Hamlet simulate to be insane. The revenge idea drives him to disguise himself as
a mad. Hamlet starts a battle of joke with Claudius by acting mad and calling it his antic disposition.
The whole thing was a scheme to get closer to Claudius to be able to avenge his father's death more
easily. The tactic was a disadvantage in that is drew all attention upon him. After this the revenge act
also structures the middle of the play. One important part of all revenge plays is that after the
revenge is finally decided upon, the tragic hero delays the actual revenge until the end of the play.
Hamlet does the same thing and he delays of killing Claudius takes on three distinct stages. First he
had to prove that the ghost was actually telling the truth, second his not killing of

While Hamlet is berating himself for not being able to allow his emotions to guide his behavior, as
the actors so expertly did, Hamlet proves that his overthinking gets the better of him. Hamlet knows
that spirits are tricksters and so he begins to accuse his father's ghost of doing the same. Hamlet
states that his "weakness" and his "melancholy" makes him the perfect target to be taken advantage
of (2.2.630). Unlike at the beginning of the play, Hamlet has had time to ponder about the "what if's"
that come with his revenge. Hamlet is experiencing one of those, one–in–the–morning–soul–
crushing crisis; his minds running wild with dismal thoughts. He delays his revenge because now his
brain has been consumed by anxiety. This fear is insinuated in his famous "to be or not to be"
soliloquy. While death is the focal point of this speech, the reader is able to make the connection to
his indecision. Hamlet mentions that the fear of not knowing what comes after death is what forces
individuals to not commit suicide. The fear of the unknown act as chains that holds victims
prisoners. This is exactly what Hamlet's over thinking has done to him. While the thought of
allowing his father's murder to run free is heart–wrenching, Hamlet's fear is the ultimate winner.
Hamlet being confronted with the truth that a coward is one who surrenders to fear, brings about his
epiphany. Hamlet has yet to do anything concrete to fulfill his revenge. Hamlet's idea of using a

Tragedy Of Prince Hamlet: Franco Zeffirelli's Hamlet

people have enjoyed reading and watching hamlet, both on stage and theatrically, Tragedy of Prince

Franco Zeffirelli's version of Hamlet was released in 1990, with Mel Gibson playing as hamlet,
Glenn Close as Gertrude, Alan Bates as Claudius, and lastly Helena Bonham Carter as Ophelia. The
setting took place in Scotland, but in the movie was supposed to be filmed in Denmark around the

The costume design for this movie was excellent. Their clothes matched the time period and Hamlet
seemed to prefer to wear black clothing and this color really fit him because of all the grief he was
going through at the time. An example of when hamlet wore black is... well, he always wore black,
and it suited him well. Another aspect of the movie that was special is the photography and the place
the movie was filmed. It was really nice to see the flash backs because it made it easier for the
viewer understand what was going on and it also helped the viewer understand what happened, to
lead up to that point. Lastly, the landscape that the movie was filmed on was very beautiful. It made
the movie more seem more authentic. Overall, I thought the movie was really good, but in my
opinion the movie would have been a somewhat better if it was spoken in modern English. If I
hadn't watched the movie, I wouldn't have known what went on in the play. Not only was the movie
able to tell me what was happening, it was able to show me. Since the movie had flashbacks, I was
able to understand why things were happening, and the things that went on to lead up to that point.
All though Franco Zeffirelli's version of hamlet was great, Kenneth Branaghs Version of Hamlet
seemed more modern, which made it more unique. Despite the fact that most people would think

Hamlet As A Revenge Tragedy
"Hamlet", much like many other Shakespearean tragedies, redefines the boundaries of revenge.
Throughout the play, Hamlet is hammered by the formidable task of deciding what course he should
take in regards to avenging his father. This play can undoubtedly be described as one lacking a
definitive answer to all the problems displayed, rightly placed on Hamlet for his indecisiveness.
Moreover, it can accurately be characterized as a form of entertainment centered around revenge.
The most obvious reason for this labeling is the proposition of the ghost of Hamlet's late father
ordering him to "revenge his foul and most unnatural murder" (Shakespeare 1.5.25), which was the
essential component that sent Hamlet spiraling towards a miserable, wretched existence. He spent
weeks trying to decide what route would rectify his unique situation in a way that would avenge his
father, as well as resolve his personal heartache. Additionally, it is argued that "Hamlet", written
during the Elizabethan era where political, historical, and comedic substance became the
cornerstone of entertainment, is a revenge tragedy solely because of the fact that Hamlet's killing of
Polonius was accidental, and instead directed toward the King – the man who single handedly
destroyed his life. This event marks the commencement of Hamlet's revenge, the incident that
eventually led to his own demise. "Hamlet" qualifies as a revenge tragedy because of the undeniable
vengeance finally extracted on the late king's

Hamlet, A Revenge Tragedy
Hamlet, a revenge tragedy, scripted by William Shakespeare in 1603, is a tale of a murder, secrets
and lies. The tragedy places the protagonist Hamlet, with the challenge of avenging his Father, King
Hamlet's death. Shakespeare develops a range of techniques to influence the audience's perception
and understanding towards the production's main themes of revenge betrayal and death. Effective
techniques present within the play is the utilisation of symbolism, imagery and soliloquies. These
literary devices provide great perception into the characters and storyline. The prevailing utilisation
of imagery throughout the play, along with the continuous reinforcements which accentuates the
connection between the King and country. The support of literary devices, enable Shakespeare to
develop the plays themes and influence the audience to comprehend the deeper meaning and greater
complexity within Hamlet.
Shakespeare presents Hamlet's crazy thoughts and actions to permits his authority to be upheld, and
continuous chaos to arise. Quickly following the opening scene when King Hamlet is killed,
Hamlet's desire for revenge is heightened, this is further conveyed through Shakespeare's utilisation
of symbolism. Hamlet expresses, "this too, too solid flesh would melt" and the ability to dissolve the
"dew" to register his anguish over his Father's death, including the remarriage of his Mother and
Uncle Claudius. The expression of, "gainst self–slaughter" explores the deep and suicidal

an English playwright, and actor, around 1599 and 1602. Hamlet is set Denmark, where Prince

remarried his Uncle Claudius, who has had himself crowned King even though Hamlet is his father's
heir to the throne, therefore, he is supposed to be king. Even though King Hamlet is dead, his
presence is not absent from the play because he comes back as a ghost and visits the castle. When
his father's ghost visits the castle, the Ghost complains that he is unable to rest in peace because he
was murdered by Claudius who poured poison in King Hamlet's ear while the old king napped and
now the Ghost wants Hamlet to avenge his death by killing Claudius, yet, for the Queens
wrongdoing of marrying his brother the Ghost want Hamlet to spare her and let heaven decide her
fate. Hamlet vows to do this for his father but does not do it right away, leading him to fall into deep

The Tragedy Of Hamlet
In The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, many scholars are known to
debate the controversial topics that are present within the play. This includes whether or not Hamlet
is pretending to be mad, if an Oedipus complex is present within the play, and if it is the reason for
his delay to action. In Hamlet there is evidence that Hamlet is only feigning madness and in reality
identifies with Claudius, thereby delaying Claudius' death. This is largely in part due to the Oedipus
complex that is present within Hamlet. In Hamlet it is debated whether or not Hamlet's madness in
the play is real. However, the evidence points to the idea that Hamlet is only pretending to be mad.
When Hamlet tells Horatio "As I perchance hereafter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ultimately, the reason for the delay to action in Hamlet is left ambiguous but, one such credible
explanation is that the delay is due to the Oedipus complex. Hamlet sees his own sexual desires
manifested in Claudius so therefore he is unable to take action and kill the man he identifies with.
Sigmund Freud states that, "Hamlet is able to do anything– except take vengeance on the man who
did away with his father and took that father's place with his mother, the man who shows him the
repressed wishes of his own childhood realized" (41). Hamlet is unable to punish Claudius for
killing his father because Hamlet realizes that "he himself is literally no better than the sinner whom
he is to punish" (Freud 41). This idea is confirmed in the last moments of the play when Hamlet's
mother dies. Hamlet throughout the play struggles to kill Claudius because he represents Hamlet's
childhood wishes, however, only after Gertrude dies is Hamlet's childhood wishes killed along with
her. "Hamlet is finally able to kill Claudius because Gertrude has now died. Because Gertrude is the
object of Hamlet's desire, and she has now died, Hamlet's desire for his mother has also died"
(Schaeffer). With nothing left to cause him to identify with Claudius, Hamlet is finally able to
complete the task that was given to

Hamlet Tragedy Analysis
Hamlet, despite being an introspective look at grief as well as a cautionary tale of the human
condition, is first and foremost a tragedy. The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, by William
Shakespeare, is a play written in the early 17th century that follows the Senecan formula: a
playwriting method originating in Rome which accentuates points of revenge, honor, the
supernatural, suicide, and blood. This formula is evident throughout the play but is fully realized in
the character of Hamlet. He is a tragic hero, bound to revenge, goaded by the ghost of his father,
who with each decision moves closer to his inevitable death. Hamlet has many observable traits. He
is intelligent, emotional, temperamental, and bold but his tragic flaw is that of overthinking. Though
Hamlet is driven by instinct to right the wrong done to his father, he does not act as such. He
carefully calculates all of his advances against his antagonists and spends a considerable amount of
time explaining to the audience what complications certain issues present. "O all you host of
heaven! O earth! What else? And shall I couple hell? Oh, fie! Hold, hold, my heart, And you, my
sinews, grow not instant old, But bear me stiffly up. Remember thee! Ay, thou poor ghost, whiles
memory holds a seat In this distracted globe. Remember thee! Yea, from the table of my memory I'll
wipe away all trivial fond records, All saws of books, all forms, all pressures past That youth and
observation copied there, And thy commandment all alone shall live Within the book and volume of
my brain, Unmixed with baser matter. Yes, by heaven! O most pernicious woman! O villain, villain,
smiling, damnèd villain! My tables!–Meet it is I set it down That one may smile, and smile, and be a
villain. At least I'm sure it may be so in Denmark. (writes) So, uncle, there you are. Now to my
word. It is "Adieu, adieu. Remember me." I have sworn 't." (I.v.94–1130) In Hamlet's long soliloquy
he belabors the idea of fate and its unfairness. After stewing over his villainous uncle and mother, he
finally commits himself to vengeance by the ghost's suggestion. This action in particular is the one
that sets him on the path to his death. Hamlet's tendency to overthink can most notably be

The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare
How certain can one be that they will see tomorrow? How certain can one be that they will see the
next second? In William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet, all of the characters face uncertainty
at some point in the story. The character of Hamlet is, for lack of a better term, a laggard; he
procrastinates like no other, making him an uncertain character in his entirety. His most famous line
is "To be, or not to be? That is the question." The entire scene is about Hamlet's uncertainty about
suicide and death. The ghost is masked in uncertainty. Who is it? Is it real? Why is it around?
Ophelia is constantly uncertain of Hamlet and his feelings towards her. Is she a young lady or a little
girl? Does she realize the sexual connotations Hamlet makes when he speaks to her? What about
Queen Gertrude? Does she know the truth about King Hamlet's death? Does she marry his brother
because she loves him, or because Denmark needs a king? The multiple themes of Hamlet are very
obvious: morality, revenge, and death. The all–encompassing theme of Shakespeare's The Tragedy
of Hamlet is uncertainty. You can tell by the decisions made by characters, the way people speak to
one another, and the characters backgrounds.
First of all, when speaking of uncertainty, the play begins with the question "Who's there?" The very
beginning of this tragedy is a soldier being uncertain of who is nearing him at his post. The fact that
the first line is a question of who is around the current character

Hamlet As A Tragic Tragedy
In spite of the fact that tragedies had been written in the English language before William
Shakespeare's time, it was England's national poet who gave tragedies their distinguishing qualities
and elevated tragedies to its peak of excellence. It is within Shakespeare's tragedies where the
operation of a tragic flaw in a hero's character is depicted. The word "tragic flaw" is derived from
the Greek concept of Hamartia, used by Greek philosopher Aristotle. A "tragic flaw" is defined as a
personality trait of a story's protagonist that leads to his or her demise due to the personal defect of
their character; although, chance, fate, and sometimes supernatural play in the role of the fall of the
tragedy's hero, Shakespeare's tragedies essentially are the tragedy of the character (Devi, p. 1 par. 1).
Hamlet was many things: a speaker, a scholar, an actor, and a prince. His greatness would exude in
all of his accomplishments, except one: his inability to act. Hamlet could not find himself to be able
to avenge his father's death without adjournment. The tragic flaw in Hamlet's character is what
caused him to postpone his revenge on Claudius, the brother and murderer of the late king Hamlet.
The error or frailty in Shakespeare's character is Hamlet's idealistic beliefs. While Hamlet's idealism
is certainly a good characteristic to have, in this case, because of Hamlet's atmosphere and
circumstances which befall on him, his beliefs causes great conflicts within himself. Hamlet was

Deliberate Killing of Oneself
"To be or not to be" is not the question. The question is , "Who would bear the torments of the world
we live in when he could settle everything himself with a mere dagger?" Is a statement made by
Hamlet In Shakespeare's play, The Tragedy Of Hamlet (III.I). The death of the king causes the royal
family to have many problems. The death allowed Claudius, King Hamlet's brother to take the
throne and the Queen's hand only shortly after, causing Hamlet to hate both of them. It also made
Hamlet consider suicide, and undergo moments of self doubt and betrayal from Queen Gertrude. As
well as the death of polonius which cause the fair Ophelia's suspicious "death". Shakespeare brings
up the thought of suicide often because the main character is going through a depressing stage of
mourning throughout the play and has also considered ending his life a number of times throughout
the play but struggles because he is stuck in the Elizabethan era which saw suicide as an
unforgivable sin religiously, and as a total wrongdoing morally , but Hamlet thought aesthetically,
Humans do not end their lives because they are afraid of wait will come , they rather bear the
burdens and suffering they experience than to to an unknown world and never return again.. Hamlet
believes that people choose to stay alive in order to live a well life which he believes is the path to
an eternal life of joy.

The Tragedy of Prince Hamlet
King Hamlet's death left a mark on everyone in the castle, after a while that all began to change
when Claudius married Hamlet's mother. Hamlet felt that everybody should be mourning his father's
death, and he felt betrayed by the sudden marriage. Hamlet becomes mad once he sees his father as
a ghost and seeks to avenge his father's death, not knowing that this would lead to his death. The
grief of King Hamlet's death and the reactions of his loved ones changed Prince Hamlet's life by
showing signs of post–traumatic stress disorder. King Hamlet's death left a big mark on his son
Prince Hamlet, he was Hamlets idol. Hamlet wanted to commit suicide because he was still
mourning the death of his father, but he didn't because he thought of the consequences of purgatory,
where he would not go to heaven or hell but remain as a lost soul in the world ("Hamlet's") These
reactions relate to PTSD because Hamlet cannot let his father go and he also suffers by the reactions
of his loved ones who are calm and happy for Gertrude and Claudius. Less than two months after his
father's death, Hamlet noticed the reactions of his loved ones, his mother married King Hamlet's
brother Claudius whom became king after King Hamlet died, no one had an issue with their
marriage the only one who was disturbed by the marriage was Prince Hamlet and he was disturbed

The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare
Tragedy, according to American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, is a drama or literary
work in which the main character is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a
consequence of a tragic flaw, moral weakness, or inability to cope with unfavorable circumstances.
In William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, tragedy is no short supply.
Shakespeare takes the reader on a journey of epic proportions through the struggles and conflicts,
internal and external, that Hamlet faces on his quest to discover his father's murderer and avenge his
death. No other literary work encompasses the embodiment of tragedy quite like William
Shakespeare does in The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Deeper exploration of the nature
and worthiness of Hamlet himself, as well as, the situations and solutions Hamlet faced, and the
manner in which Hamlet responded to the consequences of his actions, undeniably embodies
tragedy. Tragedy can be found in many aspects of a story. The main character, in which the tragedy
happens to or within, is among the most important roles in a drama. The nature of Hamlet is very
versatile and appears to be confusing. Throughout the story Hamlet's feelings and thoughts about the
conflict arising in his life change constantly. In the first act Hamlet is angry at his uncle, King
Claudius, for stealing his thrown and marring his mother so shortly after his father past; "A little

Examples Of Revenge Tragedy In Hamlet
A lot of Shakespeare's plays allude to revenge and revenge tragedy. Revenge tragedy is seeking
revenge for wrongdoings done against someone in a literary work. Usually, the person seeking this
revenge is the protagonist and the plot is usually developed throughout their journey to get their
rightful revenge. Revenge tragedy is also the central conflict within a literary work. In the play,
Hamlet,Young Fortinbras, and Laertes are all examples of revenge tragedy. Hamlet ironically isn't a
person that shows to have the desire of seeking revenge and this is ironic because most of the time
the protagonist of a revenge tragedy work desires revenge. Revenge tragedy often sees "that the

"Hamlet refrained from killing his own mother, thereby demonstrating Shakespeare's greater respect
for 'the rules of manner proper to Persons'." (Grazia 2003) This philosophical criticism used
provides an understanding to the meaning of the work because it clearly displays the stance
Shakespeare had when it came to philosophy and morals and this could be seen throughout Hamlet
as well. Shakespeare is more able to get his meaning and message of his literary work Hamlet over
to the readers by describing their psyche and their subconscious thoughts, as seen with Hamlet
several times. Psychoanalytic criticism is the idea that literary text express the private unconscious
desires of the author as well as their inner psyche or persona. Shakespeare constructs Hamlet to be a
very psychoanalytic character. The literary text of Hamlet's thoughts tie to his desires and
grievances. In the work, Hamlet tells his father that he will fulfill his father's wishes and get revenge
on Claudius, his uncle. This brings upon the idea of Paternity(his father's wishes) against law as well
as religion. The destress that Shakespeare painted Hamlet to be in(or the literary text) may describe
why there was so much friction between Hamlet following up on his father's wishes. Psychoanalysis
is a way to describe one's subconscious state of mind. "Hamlet's fervid, divinizing praise of his

Revenge Tragedy In Hamlet
The classic revenge tragedy is one way to describe Shakespeare's greatest play Hamlet. The story is
driven by a reprisal catastrophe lead by the main character, Hamlet. Over the course of the story,
readers see that Hamlet is mulling over requital as opposed to demanding it. Hamlet's powerlessness
to vindicate the murder of his beloved father, king Hamlet, is what keeps the story running and
prompts the demises of a large portion of the characters in the story, including Polonius,
Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Laertes, Gertrude, Claudius, and himself. In Hamlet, there is no
justification for revenge because evil consumes the protagonist and leads to the downfall of
everyone around Hamlet, including himself.
The first clue readers receive about the revenge plot is when the ghost of King Hamlet is being
introduced to Hamlet. The ghost reveals to Hamlet that it is Claudius, who poisons the king Hamlet
in his sleep: "'Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchard, / A serpent stung me; so, the whole ear of
Denmark/ Is by a forged process of my death/ Rankly abused: but know, thou noble youth, / The
serpent that did sting thy father's life/ Now wears his crown" (I.i.35–40). In the following quote, the
ghost informs Hamlet that Claudius, the one who wears his crown, is the one who poisons king
Hamlet as he sleeps in his orchard. Before explaining who killed Hamlets father, the ghost then
encourages him to take revenge for his father's unfair death. The Ghost informs Hamlet that it is his
obligation to take revenge over his father's death: "So art thou to revenge, when thou shalt hear"
(I.i.8). It is Hamlets duty to avenge the death of the king as he is the Prince of Denmark. Further, the
Ghost continues to deliver his message about the revenge: "Revenge his foul and most unnatural
murder" (I.i.25). The Ghost is implying that if Hamlet loves his father then he will get the kingdom
and kill Claudius. The Ghost is the starting point of the revenge plot; however, Hamlet is trying to
justify the revenge by finding proof against Claudius. Although, Hamlet is talking to the Ghost, he is
yet to completely believe that it is his father's spirit. Critic Bradley states "Hamlet was restrained by
the conscience or a moral scruple; he

The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet is a misfortunate play that exhibits Prince Hamlet's
internal and external conflicts which show the ultimate purpose of the story. Revenge is perhaps the
greatest theme in Hamlet, and is shown by the conflicts Prince Hamlet has with his family, friends,
and a girlfriend as well as within his self. The anguish Hamlet feels towards his new father and his
mother is magnified by the discovery that they were both involved in his father, the king's, murder.
This anger transcends to unassuming characters like his fiancé, his best friend, and other minor
characters. Hamlet's goal of revenge takes over his character and transforms him from a quiet
intellectual to a cruel, vengeful villain. The use of imagery, simile, and foreshadowing in the story
helps the reader visualize how something rotten in the state of Denmark came to be. Hamlet and his
new father, arguably have the strongest conflict, making their relationship important to analyze.
Hamlet previously trusted and loved his uncle, Claudius, but after his marriage to his mother he
becomes emotionally compromised. Prince Hamlet's anger towards the new king is easily seen.
King Claudius appears to show no remorse until his dying breath. Hamlet struggles in his
relationship with his mother because he does love her, but is rattled by her decision to marry his
uncle days after his father's death. When Prince Hamlet realizes that Gertrude played a significant
role in the king's death he

Hamlet and Tragedy
Hamlet: A Tragedy When you think of William Shakespeare, Hamlet is the first thing most people
think of, as his work. Hamlet is also a classic example of a tragedy. In all tragedies the hero suffers,
and usually dies at the end. All good pieces of literature written way back when, are usually
tragedies. The most important element is the amount of free will the character has. In every tragedy,
the character must display free will. If every action is controlled by a hero's destiny, then the hero's
death can't be avoided, and in a tragedy the sad part is that it could. Hamlet's death could have been
avoided many times. Hamlet had many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tragic hero must possess many good traits, as well as one flaw, which eventually leads to his
downfall. A tragic hero must be brave and noble. Hamlet is the perfect example of the tragic hero.
Hamlet has all the good traits needed to be a tragic hero. He is brave and daring. One example of
this is that when he went to England, he was taking a big risk and knew they were out to kill him.
His loyalty to his father, was the reason he was so angry with Claudius and his Mother. Eric Bentley
said that a Tragedy is dependent on comedy. Comic relief is used in tragedies to change the
atmosphere of the reader, who is constantly focusing on the death and corruption of a tragedy. If a
play were full of the death and sorrow, as in tragedies, it would make the reader very depressed and
not like the play. Some examples of this in Hamlet, are in the Gravedigger Scene, Talking to the
Skull and the Throwing of the book.
Towards the end of the play, there are two scenes in the graveyard. One is when Hamlet picks up a
skull, and the gravedigger tells him that the skull belonged to Yorick, the old king's jester. Hamlet
tells Horatio that he knew Yorick, and then realizes what we all become after we die, dust. He then
plays with the idea of life and death, and describes the finality of it. The gravedigger scene is the
tragic conclusion of the play. The second scene of comedy in this scene is when the gravediggers
argue whether Ophelia should be allowed to be

Hamlet- A Revenge Tragedy Essay
Hamlet is one of Shakespeare's most well–known tragedies. At first glance, it holds all of the
common occurrences in a revenge tragedy which include plotting, ghosts, and madness, but its
complexity as a story far transcends its functionality as a revenge tragedy. Revenge tragedies are
often closely tied to the real or feigned madness in the play. Hamlet is such a complex revenge
tragedy because there truly is a question about the sanity of the main character Prince Hamlet.
Interestingly enough, this deepens the psychology of his character and affects the way that the
revenge tragedy takes place. An evaluation of Hamlet's actions and words over the course of the
play can be determined to see that his 'outsider' outlook on society, ... Show more content on

One symptom of Schizophrenia is finding oneself incapable of communicating with society. It is
possible that Hamlet is Schizophrenic because, given the way that Hamlet feels unable to trust the
likes of Claudius, Gertrude, and the other characters, it could suggest a reasoning for his acts of
insanity being a way to communicate.
Well known is it that the main plot of Hamlet is outlined by revenge. Upon learning the
circumstances of his father's death, Hamlet's attitude shifts. Once a saddened mourner, Hamlet
becomes a man on a mission for revenge. When the ghost of Hamlet's father brings the news to the
awestruck Hamlet, Hamlet is appalled by the "Foul and most unnatural murder" (1.5, 31). Hamlet
immediately promises the ghost the retribution he desires, claiming that he will seek swift
vengeance against his father's murder to prove his love for him: "Haste me to know't that I, with
wings as swift as meditation or the thoughts of love, may sweep to my revenge" (1.5, 35–37).
Ironically, Hamlet promises the ghost a swift revenge, though his revenge is anything but quick. The
theme of delayed activity reoccurs throughout the plot of the story, because, consistently, the
protagonist's time–table for accomplishing the task is slowed due to his pondering of moral issues.

Hamlet As An Aristotelian Tragedy Essay
According to the Aristotelian view of tragedy, a tragic hero must fall through his or her own error.
This is typically called the "tragic flaw", and can be applied to any characteristic that
causes the downfall the hero. Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of Denmark can be seen as an
Aristotelian tragedy and Hamlet as it's tragic hero. Hamlet's flaw, which in accordance with
Aristotle's principles of tragedy causes his demise, is his inability to act. This defect of Hamlet's
character is displayed throughout the play.

Further evidence of Hamlet's tragic flaw can be found in act III, scene 3. At this point, Hamlet is
sure of Claudius' guilt, and has even declared that "Now could I drink hot blood and do such
bitter business as the day Would quake to look on." (p. 99 lines 406–408) He comes to find
King Claudius alone, and recognizes it as an opportunity to act, but almost immediately talks
himself out of action on the bases that the King is praying, and will therefore go to heaven. He
decides yet again to delay avenging his father's murder, this time until he can kill the King while he
is in a vile condition, such as "When he is drunk asleep; or in his rage; Or in the incestuous
pleasure of his bed." (p. 103 lines 89–90) Hamlet has failed to act for so long that the Ghost
soon comes back to remind him of his duty.
In the end, we see that Hamlet's inability to act indeed causes his fall, and that his failure costs him
not only his life, but also his mother's. In the final scene, Hamlet duels with Laertes, who has
conspired with the King to kill Hamlet. In the King's attempt to kill Hamlet, he accidentally poisons
the Queen. Laertes delivers the fatal wound to Hamlet with a sword dipped in a deadly poison and it
is only with his final life breath that Hamlet finally kills the King. This does not mean that Hamlet

The Tragedy of Hamlet
In life the border between sanity and madness is thin and undefined. At best it is a gray area, fuzzy
and unclear. Yet it is this area that Shakespeare so deftly depicts in
The Tragedy of Hamlet. The gray environment he weaves eventually renders it almost impossible to
tell the sane from the insane, the ability to reason ultimately becomes the audience's sole determiner
of a character's mental condition. Thus, Shakespeare is able to successfully tie his thoughts on
reason and emotion to a character's sanity. In the play
Hamlet, by Shakespeare, the main character fits the description for being a tragic hero. A tragic hero

Hamlet is rational enough to realize that the
"undiscovered country from whose born/ No traveler returns" (3.1.79–80) may hold far worse
realities for him than his present earthly uncertainties. The prince's composure and cool reason
prevent him from taking his own life, or as he puts it, "the native hue of resolution/ Is sicklied o'er
with the pale cast of thought" (3.1.84–85). This view, that Shakespeare believed that suicide was
only a legitimate option to the insane, is supported by evidence that he did not intend Hamlet to be
insane. The most compelling evidence is found in the way Hamlet switches between being rational
and acting mad, according to who he was talking to. For example in scene two Hamlet acts quite
mad for Polonius. The old advisor even remarks upon Hamlet possessing "a happiness that often
madness hits on, which reason and/ sanity could not so prosperously be delivered of" (2.2.211–213).
Then, only moments later, Hamlet switches gears to deliver his "What a piece of work is man!"
(2.2.297–314) speech, to Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern. Likewise, his "To be or not to be..." (3.1.56–90) soliloquy, a rational and coherent
speech on death, is directly followed by the famous "Nunnery Scene" (3.1.153).

In this soliloquy Hamlet is angry as opposed to sad. One way this is shown is the short sentences
that make up this soliloquy. In this soliloquy Hamlet again struggles with the actions of his mother

"And thy commandment all alone shall live/ Within the book and volume of my brain"{1.5.109–

whether the ghost is being truthful or not. Ghost, in this time, were thought to be able to take on any

moral nature of Hamlet. The third soliloquy is used to develop the character of Hamlet even further.
In this soliloquy the reader is exposed to the indecisiveness of Hamlet. This soliloquy comes after

popular in England during the late 16th and early 17th. A Shakespearean tragedy is built upon a

finally resolved. The play is built upon the long, tragic conflict between Hamlet and Claudius and
the conflict is built upon the figure of revenge. The Driving points that shapes the plot of play are

There Hamlet learns that his father's death was no mistake, but it was Hamlet's uncle's plan to
murder him. The ghost also tells Hamlet that he has been given the role of the person who will take
revenge upon Claudius. Like a typical revenge tragedy, in Hamlet a crime is committed and for
various reasons laws and justice cannot punish the crime so the individual, Hamlet proceeds on to
take revenge in spite of everything. Hamlet must now think of how to take on Claudius, although he

Hamlet Tragedy And Insanity Essay
"To be, or not to be? That is the question" (Shakespeare 50).
The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark was written by William Shakespeare as it became one of
the most influential plays in world literature from the Seventeenth to the Twentieth–First Century. In
all honesty, William Shakespeare, the "Bard of Avon", was regarded as the greatest playwright in
English literature as his most famed plays include Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. The prominent
trend in most of Shakespeare's writing is the use of tragedy as well as moral insanity, resulting in the
protagonist's demise. Shakespeare was successful in implementing elements of tragedy and insanity
in the phenomenal play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, as he captured the hearts of the Elizabethans as
well as our contemporary society.
Dr. James Cowles Prichard, a Bristol doctor in London, created a medical theory called the "Theory
of Moral Insanity" to describe individuals who display a series of irregular behavior.
There is a form of mental derangement in which the intellectual faculties [are uninjured], while the
disorder is manifested principally or alone in the state of feelings, temper, or habits... The moral...
principles of the mind... are depraved or perverted, the power of self–government is lost or greatly
impaired, and the individual is... incapable... of conducting himself with decency... (Ozarin)

Revenge Tragedy In Hamlet
The most common approach is revenge tragedy. Revenge tragedy is the act of a character feeling the
need for revenge. The character does achieve the goal of revenge, but typically causes a tragedy by
dying himself or causing other to die in the process. Hamlet goes through his own internal conflict
and takes a long time to avenge his father's murder. Glyn Austen provides a view that Hamlet's
revenge is "more orchestrated by his enemies than by himself." (Glyn 1) This argument is supported
through many parts of the play. Through Hamlet's soliloquies, the audience can conclude that
Hamlet is torn by his "mission." Although he clearly wants Claudius dead, he is constantly hesitant
about his future actions. Even when he has adequate proof that his uncle did murder his father, it's
almost as though Hamlet does not want to go through with it. Also presented is the notion that
Hamlet avenged the actions against himself rather than the murder of his father. (Glyn 1) When
Hamlet killed Claudius, Laertes had already poisoned him with the tip of his blade, and Gertrude
was already poisoned by the wine as well. So, if anything, Hamlet avenged the actions against his
mother and himself rather than the murder of his father. The second common approach is
psychological. The psychological approach considers the character's, or author's, mind to attempt to
gain a further understanding of the piece. Throughout the play, the ghost of Hamlet's father appears.
This apparition convinces Hamlet

Is Hamlet A Tragedy Essay
The play Hamlet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. The play is about a Prince who was
called from the school of Denmark to attend his father's funeral. He was shocked to see his Queen
mother already remarried to his uncle Claudius whom he suspects to be responsible for his father's
death. Hamlet then promised to take revenge on his father's murder.
The play Hamlet is considered as Aristotle's Poetics because it is a well written tragedy. According
to Aristotle, the most important element of the tragedy is plot and followed by others such as
character, diction, thought, song and spectacle. Aristotle defined tragedy as an imitation of an action
that is serious, complete and of a certain magnitude. Aristotelian tragedy is not a narrative ... Show

Hamartia is a flaws or character's own error which brings a terrible result. For example, Hamlet
hesitates to kill his cruel uncle leads to bring his own destruction. Stabbing Polonius behind the
curtain and his painful action towards his lover Ophelia and declaring that she should be sent to
nunnery which seems to have lost his mind. This leads to his downfall. The second concept
according to Aristotle is Anagnorisis/Recognition which is when the character recognizes the hard
truth. When Hamlet returns to Denmark after his ship is hijacked by pirates, he learns that Ophelia
has committed suicide because of her madness and over her father's death, he realized his flaw of
having mistakenly murder her father and he is unsuccessful in expressing his love and proposing her
for marriage. Another example is, by the end of the novel, Hamlet and audiences both are convinced
that Uncle Claudius killed his father and planning to kill him as well. Another example is when
Hamlet realizes and recognizes his faults after seeing his enemy actively seeking justice and honor

The Revenge Tragedy Of Hamlet Essay
Issara Butt
Professor Abbott
English 102

The Revenge Tragedy of Hamlet Revenge tragedies share some common characteristics of the play
Hamlet which classify them in the group of many great stories such as The Spanish Tragedy, and
King Lear. A vengeful ghost, a play within a play, and the main character who seeks revenge on an
opponent and murdered (KAY). At some point in life many of us feel the need to seek revenge and
never actually act upon it, but what if we did? What would be the consequences and what would life
be like afterwards. The thoughts we have of this makes the stories of revenge tragedies exciting and
intriguing. They are our thoughts written on paper and into a story making as if what we think is
actually happening. In the time of Shakespearean writing, things would have gone slightly different.
The play Hamlet, is a prime example of a revenge tragedy in its refined state of written speech.
Hamlet is a revenge tragedy for many reasons, not only that but it is the most written, re–enacted,
and read play of all time (TUMIEL). The multiple plots of revenge, murders, and ghost appearances
makes Hamlet the leading play of revenge tragedies and most studied currently in academic
curriculums. It is believed to be that William Shakespeare's Hamlet was based off of Thomas Kyd's
story, Ur–Hamlet (MABILLARD). Although Ur–Hamlet was a rough and uncut version of a
revenge tragedy and needed further developing, but Shakespeare's Hamlet is well refined,

Hamlet : Death And Death In The Tragedy Of Hamlet
"It was not a life if lived without love." To have ever lived, is to experience the love and compassion
that people provide. When that necessity of life is gone, one can succumb to self–worth; the failure
and unfairness of nature evokes the question of ending life to a suffering man. That is why William
Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark captures the essence of death– the
justification of self murder; to escape the tormenting reality that one is living in. Ophelia is
overlooked as a pawn and faces a difficult life as she has little to no freedom to change her fate,
resorting to suicide as an option to escape the impotent and inimical occurrences that haunt her life.
Polonius and Laertes demand for Ophelia to avoid Hamlet, her dearly beloved, causing their love
affair to diminish which leaves her in a heartbroken state. Laertes' recommendation of celibacy
towards his sister prior to his voyage to France, demonstrates that Ophelia should not expose too
much of herself to the prince of Denmark and keep him out of her desire.
Fear it, Ophelia; fear it, my dear sister, and keep you in the rear of your affection, out of the shot and
danger desire. The chariest maid is prodigal enough if she unmasks her beauty to the moon. Virtue
itself' scapes not calumnious strokes.(1.3.37–42)
Polonius advises Ophelia in a more aggressive manner as he urges his daughter to "not believe his
vows, for they are brokers" (1.3. 136). Ophelia is infantilized by both Polonius

Deception In The Tragedy Of Hamlet

  • 1. Deception In The Tragedy Of Hamlet In Shakespeare's play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the main character, Hamlet deceives others through the need to get revenge for his father's death . Hamlet's deception and need for revenge continues to cause him to question himself and his existence. In doing this, he is an indecisive character . Hamlet is additionally deceiving his own friends and family, causing them to feel the pain just so he avenge his father's honor. The meaning of the play as a whole is that deceit bears no certainty in life and death. How can one make a lasting impact when they can so easily be forgotten when they die? Hamlet is constantly questioning the significance of worth in life and death. He is hesitant to murder the king because he questions the sincerity of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hamlet intended to mislead is friends, family and himself although he did not intend for the killing of one another in the final act. Without deception there would be no tragic events happening in the play. Weather it was good or bad deception is the man part of the story. If the betraying did not Kelley 5 happen then the main part of the story would not exist. Claudius would not have killed the king. The queen would not have betrayed the king and Hamlet and Hamlet would not be acting insane. Also everyone would still be alive and no pain would happen in the country of Denmark. The pain and deception through the story shows the forshadowing and tragic events that Shakespear is trying to portray. Hamlet tells about deception within the Kingdom, "O'villain, villain, smiling, damned villain!/My tables – meet it is I set it down/ The one may smile, and smile, and be a villian./ At least I'm sure it may be so in Denmark." (1.5.113–16) Others like Polonius decieve just as much as hamlet,"At such a time I'll lose my daughter to him./[To the king.] Be you and I behind an arras than./Make the encounter:" (2.2.176–78) This is ... • 3. Ophelia and Hamlet in The Tragedy of Hamlet Essay Ophelia and Hamlet In 1600, William Shakespeare composed what is considered the greatest tragedy of all time, Hamlet, the tragedy of the Prince of Denmark. His masterpiece forever redefined what tragedy should be. Critics have analyzed it word for word for nearly four hundred years, with each generation appreciating Hamlet in its own way. While Hamlet conforms, without a doubt, to Aristotle's definition of a tragedy, one question still lingers. Did Shakespeare intend for the reader or viewer of Hamlet to feel greater sympathy for Hamlet, or for Ophelia, Hamlet's lover? Both characters tug at the heartstrings throughout the play, but it is clear that 'the tragedy of the Prince of Denmark' is a misrepresentation of Shakespeare's true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It seems clear that Ophelia, in her madness, knows what others "may be." She has become enlightened in her insanity. Unfortunately, because of her suicide, Ophelia is never given the chance to know what she herself might have been. Clearly though, Ophelia does change greatly from act 1 to act 4. She transforms from a simple and innocent young girl into a mad, unsettled and knowing woman. What brings on these changes in Ophelia? One significant cause is the aforementioned attempted 'education' by Ophelia's brother, Laertes. When Laertes gives his brotherly advise to Ophelia, in act 1, scene 3, he speaks of more that just Hamlet's love for Ophelia. Laertes warns Ophelia that Hamlet is toying with her affection in lines 14–18: ... Perhaps he loves you now, And now no soil nor cautel doth besmirch The virtue of his will, but you must fear, His greatness weighed, his will is not his own, or he himself is subject to his birth. (1.3.14–18) According to Laertes, Hamlet could not possibly love Ophelia because his is a prince and Ophelia a mere maid. Hamlet is bound by his regency to love and marry a princess of equal rank and stature. In lines 30–33, Laertes preaches the importance of Ophelia's chastity:

  • 8. The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare N. Julian A tragedy is a dramatic work that is about a character whose tragic flaw leads to his downfall and to the demise of many of the other characters. William Shakespeare was a playwright during the Elizabethan Era who was made famous for his literary works of tragedies, comedies and sonnets. One of Shakespeare?s most renowned tragedies is Hamlet. In this classic tragedy the protagonist, Hamlet, pursues revenge and seeks justice against the antagonist, Claudius, for the murder of King Hamlet. As a result of his pursuits, Hamlet, his family, and most of his acquaintances all meet the same demise: death. Through the characters in Hamlet, Shakespeare incorporates the concept of how often the thoughts and actions of people can be contradictory to their true motives. Shakespeare?s Hamlet contains the reoccurring themes of disguise and deceit; the deceitful actions of Claudius cause the other characters to disguise their thoughts, actions, and emotions. In Act I, scene IV, a supernatural figure appears to young Hamlet and he is quite shaken because the figure looks frighteningly familiar to him. ?Be thy intents wicked or charitable, / Thou comest in such a questionable shape, / That I will speak to thee.?[endnoteRef:2] ?Hamlet questions if the Ghost could be the ghost of his dead father or a demon in disguise. • 10. The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare Why has Hamlet's rage led him to a death that was destined to happen? Simple, his absolute motive was to seek revenge for the death of his father, who was once the King of Denmark. In this tragedy, Hamlet wanted to put on this image of an insane man. This would mislead the people around him from his intentions of killing King Claudius, who is strangely his uncle and "father" simultaneously. Claudius takes the throne for Denmark after pouring poison down King Hamlet's ear without leaving any evidence behind. With this given information, the play begins with an apparition making appearances at the ramparts of the Elsinore Castle of Denmark. Readers soon discover that the ghost resembling figure is in fact Prince Hamlet's father. As The Tragedy of Hamlet unfolds, William Shakespeare provides imagery through strong and complex dialogue. Shakespeare allowed Hamlet to lose himself in his own madness to create foreshadowing and confounding plots. When Prince Hamlet is first introduced in the play, he is in a gloomy mental state. He does not tolerate the gathering King Claudius had put together to discuss his recent marriage and the death of Hamlet's father. In addition, Hamlet is the only person dressed from head to toe in black at this event. The representation of his clothing is to show his mourning and sadness for his father. When young Hamlet is left alone, he expresses words of hatred and sorrow. "O, that this too too solid flesh would melt, thaw, and resolve itself into a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Hamlet's Views : Hamlet, And The Tragedy Of Hamlet Thousands of people come up with thousands of views on Hamlet, for me, this is the most powerful work from Shakespeare. It is focusing on a specific tragedy of Hamlet, prince of Denmark, but reflects the tragedy of the whole age. Discussing "murder, revenge, pressure, desire" those philosophical and ethical issues, Hamlet told us to build a society that is rational, orderly, and moral; and criticize human nature of evil and negative desire. Hamlet is about revenge of Hamlet, whose father, the king of Denmark was killed by Claudius, Hamlet's uncle and king's brother. Claudius became the new king, married with dead king's wife, Gertude, Hamlet's mother. One night, Hamlet met his father's ghost, who told him the truth of his death, Hamlet was so angry, but decided to find out whether the ghost spoke truly, he acted crazy, and managed a perform in which he added the scene that describe king's death, resulted in Claudius left mad, convincing he killed the king, Hamlet swore to kill him, but because of so many reasons, he hesitated,. Claudius tried plenty of ways to send Hamlet abroad and kill him. Polonius, a minister who killed by Hamlet by accident, his daughter, Ophelia, the one Hamlet fell in love with, drawn under the pressure of her father's death and Hamlet's heartless. Laertes, Polonius son back to Denmark, decided to kill Hamlet to revenge for his father and sister. • 14. Hamlet : The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare Shakespeare's brilliant play is still forming the thoughts of people today. The theme of Hamlet has been debated throughout all of literary and Shakespeare's history, and is likely the most tragic play of Shakespeare's tragedies. It is a worrisome twist of passion and tragedies, that feels like it will never end, until it abruptly does. Hamlet will do anything to avenge his father's murder, even if it means damaging himself and all of the people around him, while disobeying his own morals; Hamlet believes that murdering Claudius is moral, because Claudius killed his own father, and he is just mimicking his sin. Hamlet swore he would avenge his father, which caused the downfall and ruination of himself and almost everyone associated with him. The Ghost speaks to Hamlet demanding vengeance and says "Thus was I, sleeping, by a brother's hand Of life, of crown, of queen at once dispatched, Cut off, even in the blossoms of my sin... With all my imperfections on my head" (1.5.81–86). He found comfort in seeing his father's Ghost, but he did not find it comforting when his father told him Claudius was the one who poured poison in his father's ear as he slept. Dismally Hamlet's father still had many sins at the time of his murder, but instead of remorse he only seeks retribution. The Ghost tells Hamlet to let guilt do his mother's damage, by telling him "Leave her to heaven And to those thorns that in her bosom lodge To prick and sting her" (1.5.94–96). • 16. Macbeth and Hamlet Tragedies Essay At a time for war, Both Hamlet and Macbeth are considered tragedies and both main characters are considered tragic heroes. There are many differences and similarities. For one, both have somewhat of a psychotic, mental breakdown at some point of the story. Hamlet is just acting crazy to deceive Claudius, while Macbeth has truly gone mad in his lust for power and selfish motives. Both are to become Royalty, with the only exception that Hamlet does it through dishonorable means. "For in my way it lies. Stars, hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires. The eye wink at the hand, yet let that be Which the eye fears, when it is done, to see" Macbeth (1.4 57–60). Hamlet is an automatic heir to the throne if his uncle dies. A ... On the other hand, even though he dies in battle on the battle field, Macbeth isn't able to die honorably, because of all the lives he has taken, purely for his own potential need. So says Macduff as he enters with Macbeth's head. "Hail, King! for so thou art. Behold where stands Th' usurper's cursèd head. The time is free. I see thee compassed with thy kingdom's pearl," Macbeth (5.8 65–67) When it comes to decision making, Hamlet takes a long time to finally decide to seek the revenge he promised his deceased fathers ghost. He tends to over think matters and oftentimes complicate them more than necessary. "Of thinking too precisely on th' event (A thought which, quartered, hath but one part wisdom And ever three parts coward), I do not know Why yet I live to say "This thing's to do," Sith I have cause, and will, and strength, and means To do't" Hamlet (4.4 43–49) In contrast, Macbeth acts very quickly and rashly. He doesn't think about what he does, before he does it, and is manipulated easily. Finally, when it came down to killing someone, in both of the plays, there were moral dilemmas preventing both of the killers from performing the evil task they so closely guarded. During Hamlets time period, revenge was condemned amongst society; which prevented ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Hamlet and The Spanish Tragedy The parallels shown between Hamlet and The Spanish Tragedy demonstrate the influence Kyd's play had on Shakespeare. The similarities can be seen throughout the plot lines and context of both plays. While using the plays as different tools, both are used for expediting revenge. Shakespeare, through the impact of Kyd's play, established and perfected an ideal plot for a play expressing revengeful tragedy. The actions and thoughts that Hamlet shows greatly displays many characteristics from The Spanish Tragedy. Hamlet models himself after Hieronimo in the way he approaches revenge. However, Hamlet wants his victims to suffer not only on earth but in the afterlife. Kyd and Shakespeare utilize both meta–theaters to exact revenge and reveal guilt. The intention of a play within a play by Kyd is used for the format of Hieronimo's death. It varies from that of Hamlet in layout and context. Hamlet plans precisely how he will avenge his father's death and when he will strike. Hamlet exclaims, "When he is...about some act/ That has no relish of salvation in't––/ Then trip him...And that his soul may be damned and black/ As hell" (Shakespeare III.iv.94–100). Killing Claudius in a sinful state will satisfy him, his father, and affect him by suffering in the afterlife as well. Hieronimo also plots his revenge, but is solely concerned with achieve earthly revenge. The Spanish Tragedy includes a play that is longer in duration than that of Hamlet. • 20. The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet (1603), was written in a time period in which society was dramatically different than it is today. For the most part, women had subservient roles and were treated as the weaker, lesser gender. Given the contrast in behavior that was considered acceptable, modern day readers struggle to understand the natural feelings of the characters and may have difficulty relating to them. The Tragedy of Hamlet dives into the base of human philosophy, submerged in the emotions and sensitivity of the main character, Hamlet, while he struggles with a devastating point in his life. When Rosencrantz and Guildenstern come for Hamlet (II.I.1) she believes it is for the benefit of her son. Meanwhile, Claudius is planning to use them as pawns in his overall plan. Also being used by Polonius and Claudius is Ophelia, Hamlet's love interest. Gertrude tells her, "Ophelia, I do wish that your good beauties be the cause of Hamlet's wildness; so shall I hope your virtues will bring him to his wonted way again" (III.I.43–46). This statement reveals the true character in Gertrude, in that she is clueless to the real cause of her son's despair but also that she legitimately cares for those around her. The actual reason Ophelia was with their family was to draw information out of Hamlet at the instruction of her father and the king. It is understandable why Gertrude wants her only son to recover, because she adores him as seen several times in the play. Everybody knows it as well; while Polonius and Claudius were discussing plans to damage Hamlet Claudius says, "...the queen his mother lives almost by his looks.." (IV.VII.13–14) as to indicate that Gertrude must not know about it because she is devoted to him. Professor Bradley adds that "she was fond of Ophelia and genuinely ... • 22. Tragic Approaches In Hamlet : The Tragedy Of Hamlet The traditional revenge tragedy approach is defined as an entire story is centered around the idea to right a wrong. In almost every revenge tragedy, there are the basic components of "a play within a play, mad scenes, a vengeful ghost, one or several gory scenes, and, most importantly, a central character who has a serious grievance against a formidable opponent" (Mabillard). This list is spot on including everything vital in creation of the play of Hamlet. The ghost of Hamlet's father who exposed Claudius as a murderer is the motive for Hamlet's madness and anger towards not only Claudius, but his mother who married him as well, growing throughout the play, therefore also increasing conflict inside of himself on how to seek revenge and when is the best time. In the third act, when Hamlet mistakes Polonius for the King behind a curtain and stabs him attempting revenge, a new source of revenge is now created as Laertes is vengeful of his father, and then his sister Ophelia's death, after she drowned from going mad as a result Hamlet's rejection. In the end, Laertes avenges the loss of his father and sister by fatally wounding Hamlet with a poisoned sword with Claudius's help. However, before Hamlet's death he realizes Claudius's interaction and goes to kill him, finally getting revenge on his father's death – marking the end of this revenge tragedy. Existentialism, also known as philosophical, is an approach that emphasizes the sense of disorientation and confusion in an apparent uncaring world where each and every person must define their own moral code by their choices, responsibilities and freedom. Everything one does is based on other previous choices made and followed by action, which is a problem for Hamlet who cannot follow through on making self–defining decisions. In his famous "to be or not to be" quote, Hamlet is caught between living out this pain and disgust from his father's murder and avenge his death, or just to commit suicide to end and avoid everything surrounding him at once. Besides this internal conflict, Hamlet also suffers other existential characteristics such as alienation when everyone around him thinks of him as a madman and absurdity because before his father's death he had no ... • 24. The Importance Of Tragedy In Hamlet The word 'tragedy' is a common in the modern world, and it is often associated with a "sad or unhappy ending". Accordingly, every time there is misfortune in a work, it is classified as a 'tragedy'. Arthur Miller offers the observation that a tragedy is something that is more than just sad. Miller argues that tragedy is not a 'pessimistic' view on an event, but it allows for "the reinforcement of the onlookers brightest opinions of the human animal". Since humans are not in control of his/her own fate, unfortunate things are bound to happen. However, the human spirit that is able to withstand catastrophe allows for hope. Hamlet has the opportunity to kill Claudius when he is praying, but does not because he is fearful that Claudius will go to heaven despite his crimes. Hamlet is admirable in not killing Claudius while praying because Hamlet wants a revenge worthy of his father and himself. Claudius and Laertes plan ironically spins out of control and them both himself killed and the queen killed. Although Hamlet also dies in the process, Hamlet justly kills Claudius with the poisoned dagger and the poisoned drink. The final image of most of the characters on the stage being dead provides a superficial pessimistic ending. However, the ability for Hamlet to maintain his honor when all odds were against him provides a great sense of hope in the audience. Also, the exchange of forgiveness from Laertes to "noble Hamlet" also provides an optimistic ending. Upon the arrival of prince Fortinbras, Hamlet is given a soldier's funeral of the highest honors which allows for a promising ending. Throughout his plan, Hamlet maintains his honor and his actions allow for "the reinforcement of the onlookers brightest opinions of the human animal". Hamlet states that his "weakness" and his "melancholy" makes him the perfect target to be taken advantage of (2.2.630). This fear is insinuated in his famous "to be or not to be" soliloquy. While death is the focal point of this speech, the reader is able to make the connection to his indecision. Hamlet mentions that the fear of not knowing what comes after death is what forces individuals to not commit suicide. The fear of the unknown act as chains that holds victims prisoners. This is exactly what Hamlet's over thinking has done to him. While the thought of allowing his father's murder to run free is heart–wrenching, Hamlet's fear is the ultimate winner. • 32. Hamlet As A Revenge Tragedy "Hamlet", much like many other Shakespearean tragedies, redefines the boundaries of revenge. Throughout the play, Hamlet is hammered by the formidable task of deciding what course he should take in regards to avenging his father. This play can undoubtedly be described as one lacking a definitive answer to all the problems displayed, rightly placed on Hamlet for his indecisiveness. Moreover, it can accurately be characterized as a form of entertainment centered around revenge. The most obvious reason for this labeling is the proposition of the ghost of Hamlet's late father ordering him to "revenge his foul and most unnatural murder" (Shakespeare 1.5.25), which was the essential component that sent Hamlet spiraling towards a miserable, wretched existence. He spent weeks trying to decide what route would rectify his unique situation in a way that would avenge his father, as well as resolve his personal heartache. Additionally, it is argued that "Hamlet", written during the Elizabethan era where political, historical, and comedic substance became the cornerstone of entertainment, is a revenge tragedy solely because of the fact that Hamlet's killing of Polonius was accidental, and instead directed toward the King – the man who single handedly destroyed his life. This event marks the commencement of Hamlet's revenge, the incident that eventually led to his own demise. • 38. The Tragedy Of Hamlet In The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, many scholars are known to debate the controversial topics that are present within the play. This includes whether or not Hamlet is pretending to be mad, if an Oedipus complex is present within the play, and if it is the reason for his delay to action. In Hamlet there is evidence that Hamlet is only feigning madness and in reality identifies with Claudius, thereby delaying Claudius' death. This is largely in part due to the Oedipus complex that is present within Hamlet. In Hamlet it is debated whether or not Hamlet's madness in the play is real. However, the evidence points to the idea that Hamlet is only pretending to be mad. When Hamlet tells Horatio "As I perchance hereafter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ultimately, the reason for the delay to action in Hamlet is left ambiguous but, one such credible explanation is that the delay is due to the Oedipus complex. Hamlet sees his own sexual desires manifested in Claudius so therefore he is unable to take action and kill the man he identifies with. Sigmund Freud states that, "Hamlet is able to do anything– except take vengeance on the man who did away with his father and took that father's place with his mother, the man who shows him the repressed wishes of his own childhood realized" (41). Hamlet is unable to punish Claudius for killing his father because Hamlet realizes that "he himself is literally no better than the sinner whom he is to punish" (Freud 41). This idea is confirmed in the last moments of the play when Hamlet's mother dies. Hamlet throughout the play struggles to kill Claudius because he represents Hamlet's childhood wishes, however, only after Gertrude dies is Hamlet's childhood wishes killed along with her. • 40. Hamlet Tragedy Analysis Hamlet, despite being an introspective look at grief as well as a cautionary tale of the human condition, is first and foremost a tragedy. The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, by William Shakespeare, is a play written in the early 17th century that follows the Senecan formula: a playwriting method originating in Rome which accentuates points of revenge, honor, the supernatural, suicide, and blood. This formula is evident throughout the play but is fully realized in the character of Hamlet. He is a tragic hero, bound to revenge, goaded by the ghost of his father, who with each decision moves closer to his inevitable death. Hamlet has many observable traits. He is intelligent, emotional, temperamental, and bold but his tragic flaw is that of overthinking. Though Hamlet is driven by instinct to right the wrong done to his father, he does not act as such. He carefully calculates all of his advances against his antagonists and spends a considerable amount of time explaining to the audience what complications certain issues present. "O all you host of heaven! O earth! What else? And shall I couple hell? Oh, fie! Hold, hold, my heart, And you, my sinews, grow not instant old, But bear me stiffly up. Remember thee! Ay, thou poor ghost, whiles memory holds a seat In this distracted globe. Remember thee! Yea, from the table of my memory I'll wipe away all trivial fond records, All saws of books, all forms, all pressures past That youth and observation copied there, And thy commandment all alone shall live Within the book and volume of my brain, Unmixed with baser matter. Yes, by heaven! O most pernicious woman! O villain, villain, smiling, damnèd villain! My tables!–Meet it is I set it down That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain. At least I'm sure it may be so in Denmark. (writes) So, uncle, there you are. Now to my word. It is "Adieu, adieu. Remember me." I have sworn 't." (I.v.94–1130) In Hamlet's long soliloquy he belabors the idea of fate and its unfairness. After stewing over his villainous uncle and mother, he finally commits himself to vengeance by the ghost's suggestion. This action in particular is the one that sets him on the path to his death. • 42. The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare How certain can one be that they will see tomorrow? How certain can one be that they will see the next second? In William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet, all of the characters face uncertainty at some point in the story. The character of Hamlet is, for lack of a better term, a laggard; he procrastinates like no other, making him an uncertain character in his entirety. His most famous line is "To be, or not to be? That is the question." The entire scene is about Hamlet's uncertainty about suicide and death. The ghost is masked in uncertainty. Who is it? Is it real? Why is it around? Ophelia is constantly uncertain of Hamlet and his feelings towards her. Is she a young lady or a little girl? Does she realize the sexual connotations Hamlet makes when he speaks to her? What about Queen Gertrude? Does she know the truth about King Hamlet's death? Does she marry his brother because she loves him, or because Denmark needs a king? The multiple themes of Hamlet are very obvious: morality, revenge, and death. The all–encompassing theme of Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet is uncertainty. You can tell by the decisions made by characters, the way people speak to one another, and the characters backgrounds. First of all, when speaking of uncertainty, the play begins with the question "Who's there?" The very beginning of this tragedy is a soldier being uncertain of who is nearing him at his post. • 44. Hamlet As A Tragic Tragedy In spite of the fact that tragedies had been written in the English language before William Shakespeare's time, it was England's national poet who gave tragedies their distinguishing qualities and elevated tragedies to its peak of excellence. It is within Shakespeare's tragedies where the operation of a tragic flaw in a hero's character is depicted. The word "tragic flaw" is derived from the Greek concept of Hamartia, used by Greek philosopher Aristotle. A "tragic flaw" is defined as a personality trait of a story's protagonist that leads to his or her demise due to the personal defect of their character; although, chance, fate, and sometimes supernatural play in the role of the fall of the tragedy's hero, Shakespeare's tragedies essentially are the tragedy of the character (Devi, p. 1 par. 1). Hamlet was many things: a speaker, a scholar, an actor, and a prince. His greatness would exude in all of his accomplishments, except one: his inability to act. Hamlet could not find himself to be able to avenge his father's death without adjournment. The tragic flaw in Hamlet's character is what caused him to postpone his revenge on Claudius, the brother and murderer of the late king Hamlet. The error or frailty in Shakespeare's character is Hamlet's idealistic beliefs. • 46. Essay On The Tragedy Of Hamlet Deliberate Killing of Oneself "To be or not to be" is not the question. The question is , "Who would bear the torments of the world we live in when he could settle everything himself with a mere dagger?" Is a statement made by Hamlet In Shakespeare's play, The Tragedy Of Hamlet (III.I). The death of the king causes the royal family to have many problems. The death allowed Claudius, King Hamlet's brother to take the throne and the Queen's hand only shortly after, causing Hamlet to hate both of them. It also made Hamlet consider suicide, and undergo moments of self doubt and betrayal from Queen Gertrude. As well as the death of polonius which cause the fair Ophelia's suspicious "death". Shakespeare brings up the thought of suicide often because the main character is going through a depressing stage of mourning throughout the play and has also considered ending his life a number of times throughout the play but struggles because he is stuck in the Elizabethan era which saw suicide as an unforgivable sin religiously, and as a total wrongdoing morally , but Hamlet thought aesthetically, Humans do not end their lives because they are afraid of wait will come , they rather bear the burdens and suffering they experience than to to an unknown world and never return again.. The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare Tragedy, according to American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, is a drama or literary work in which the main character is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, moral weakness, or inability to cope with unfavorable circumstances. In William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, tragedy is no short supply. Shakespeare takes the reader on a journey of epic proportions through the struggles and conflicts, internal and external, that Hamlet faces on his quest to discover his father's murderer and avenge his death. No other literary work encompasses the embodiment of tragedy quite like William Shakespeare does in The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Deeper exploration of the nature and worthiness of Hamlet himself, as well as, the situations and solutions Hamlet faced, and the manner in which Hamlet responded to the consequences of his actions, undeniably embodies tragedy. Tragedy can be found in many aspects of a story. The main character, in which the tragedy happens to or within, is among the most important roles in a drama. The nature of Hamlet is very versatile and appears to be confusing. Throughout the story Hamlet's feelings and thoughts about the conflict arising in his life change constantly. In the first act Hamlet is angry at his uncle, King Claudius, for stealing his thrown and marring his mother so shortly after his father past; "A little more than kin, and less than ... • 52. Examples Of Revenge Tragedy In Hamlet A lot of Shakespeare's plays allude to revenge and revenge tragedy. Revenge tragedy is seeking revenge for wrongdoings done against someone in a literary work. Usually, the person seeking this revenge is the protagonist and the plot is usually developed throughout their journey to get their rightful revenge. Revenge tragedy is also the central conflict within a literary work. In the play, Hamlet,Young Fortinbras, and Laertes are all examples of revenge tragedy. Hamlet ironically isn't a person that shows to have the desire of seeking revenge and this is ironic because most of the time the protagonist of a revenge tragedy work desires revenge. "Hamlet refrained from killing his own mother, thereby demonstrating Shakespeare's greater respect for 'the rules of manner proper to Persons'." (Grazia 2003) This philosophical criticism used provides an understanding to the meaning of the work because it clearly displays the stance Shakespeare had when it came to philosophy and morals and this could be seen throughout Hamlet as well. Shakespeare is more able to get his meaning and message of his literary work Hamlet over to the readers by describing their psyche and their subconscious thoughts, as seen with Hamlet several times. Psychoanalytic criticism is the idea that literary text express the private unconscious desires of the author as well as their inner psyche or persona. Shakespeare constructs Hamlet to be a very psychoanalytic character. The literary text of Hamlet's thoughts tie to his desires and grievances. In the work, Hamlet tells his father that he will fulfill his father's wishes and get revenge on Claudius, his uncle. This brings upon the idea of Paternity(his father's wishes) against law as well as religion. The destress that Shakespeare painted Hamlet to be in(or the literary text) may describe why there was so much friction between Hamlet following up on his father's wishes. Psychoanalysis is a way to describe one's subconscious state of mind. "Hamlet's fervid, divinizing praise of his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 54. Revenge Tragedy In Hamlet The classic revenge tragedy is one way to describe Shakespeare's greatest play Hamlet. The story is driven by a reprisal catastrophe lead by the main character, Hamlet. Over the course of the story, readers see that Hamlet is mulling over requital as opposed to demanding it. Hamlet's powerlessness to vindicate the murder of his beloved father, king Hamlet, is what keeps the story running and prompts the demises of a large portion of the characters in the story, including Polonius, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Laertes, Gertrude, Claudius, and himself. In Hamlet, there is no justification for revenge because evil consumes the protagonist and leads to the downfall of everyone around Hamlet, including himself. The first clue readers receive about the revenge plot is when the ghost of King Hamlet is being introduced to Hamlet. The ghost reveals to Hamlet that it is Claudius, who poisons the king Hamlet in his sleep: "'Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchard, / A serpent stung me; so, the whole ear of Denmark/ Is by a forged process of my death/ Rankly abused: but know, thou noble youth, / The serpent that did sting thy father's life/ Now wears his crown" (I.i.35–40). In the following quote, the ghost informs Hamlet that Claudius, the one who wears his crown, is the one who poisons king Hamlet as he sleeps in his orchard. Before explaining who killed Hamlets father, the ghost then encourages him to take revenge for his father's unfair death. The Ghost informs Hamlet that it is his obligation to take revenge over his father's death: "So art thou to revenge, when thou shalt hear" (I.i.8). It is Hamlets duty to avenge the death of the king as he is the Prince of Denmark. Further, the Ghost continues to deliver his message about the revenge: "Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder" (I.i.25). The Ghost is implying that if Hamlet loves his father then he will get the kingdom and kill Claudius. The Ghost is the starting point of the revenge plot; however, Hamlet is trying to justify the revenge by finding proof against Claudius. Although, Hamlet is talking to the Ghost, he is yet to completely believe that it is his father's spirit. Critic Bradley states "Hamlet was restrained by the conscience or a moral scruple; he ... • 56. The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet is a misfortunate play that exhibits Prince Hamlet's internal and external conflicts which show the ultimate purpose of the story. Revenge is perhaps the greatest theme in Hamlet, and is shown by the conflicts Prince Hamlet has with his family, friends, and a girlfriend as well as within his self. The anguish Hamlet feels towards his new father and his mother is magnified by the discovery that they were both involved in his father, the king's, murder. This anger transcends to unassuming characters like his fiancé, his best friend, and other minor characters. Hamlet's goal of revenge takes over his character and transforms him from a quiet intellectual to a cruel, vengeful villain. The use of imagery, simile, and foreshadowing in the story helps the reader visualize how something rotten in the state of Denmark came to be. Hamlet and his new father, arguably have the strongest conflict, making their relationship important to analyze. Hamlet previously trusted and loved his uncle, Claudius, but after his marriage to his mother he becomes emotionally compromised. Prince Hamlet's anger towards the new king is easily seen. King Claudius appears to show no remorse until his dying breath. Hamlet struggles in his relationship with his mother because he does love her, but is rattled by her decision to marry his uncle days after his father's death. Hamlet is also a classic example of a tragedy. In all tragedies the hero suffers, and usually dies at the end. All good pieces of literature written way back when, are usually tragedies. The most important element is the amount of free will the character has. In every tragedy, the character must display free will. If every action is controlled by a hero's destiny, then the hero's death can't be avoided, and in a tragedy the sad part is that it could. Hamlet's death could have been avoided many times. Hamlet had many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The tragic hero must possess many good traits, as well as one flaw, which eventually leads to his downfall. A tragic hero must be brave and noble. Hamlet is the perfect example of the tragic hero. Hamlet has all the good traits needed to be a tragic hero. He is brave and daring. One example of this is that when he went to England, he was taking a big risk and knew they were out to kill him. His loyalty to his father, was the reason he was so angry with Claudius and his Mother. Eric Bentley said that a Tragedy is dependent on comedy. Comic relief is used in tragedies to change the atmosphere of the reader, who is constantly focusing on the death and corruption of a tragedy. If a play were full of the death and sorrow, as in tragedies, it would make the reader very depressed and not like the play. Some examples of this in Hamlet, are in the Gravedigger Scene, Talking to the Skull and the Throwing of the book. Towards the end of the play, there are two scenes in the graveyard. One is when Hamlet picks up a skull, and the gravedigger tells him that the skull belonged to Yorick, the old king's jester. Hamlet tells Horatio that he knew Yorick, and then realizes what we all become after we die, dust. He then plays with the idea of life and death, and describes the finality of it. The gravedigger scene is the tragic conclusion of the play. The second scene of comedy in this scene is when the gravediggers argue whether Ophelia should be allowed to be ... • 60. Hamlet- A Revenge Tragedy Essay Hamlet is one of Shakespeare's most well–known tragedies. At first glance, it holds all of the common occurrences in a revenge tragedy which include plotting, ghosts, and madness, but its complexity as a story far transcends its functionality as a revenge tragedy. Revenge tragedies are often closely tied to the real or feigned madness in the play. Hamlet is such a complex revenge tragedy because there truly is a question about the sanity of the main character Prince Hamlet. Interestingly enough, this deepens the psychology of his character and affects the way that the revenge tragedy takes place. An evaluation of Hamlet's actions and words over the course of the play can be determined to see that his 'outsider' outlook on society, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One symptom of Schizophrenia is finding oneself incapable of communicating with society. It is possible that Hamlet is Schizophrenic because, given the way that Hamlet feels unable to trust the likes of Claudius, Gertrude, and the other characters, it could suggest a reasoning for his acts of insanity being a way to communicate. Well known is it that the main plot of Hamlet is outlined by revenge. Upon learning the circumstances of his father's death, Hamlet's attitude shifts. Once a saddened mourner, Hamlet becomes a man on a mission for revenge. When the ghost of Hamlet's father brings the news to the awestruck Hamlet, Hamlet is appalled by the "Foul and most unnatural murder" (1.5, 31). Hamlet immediately promises the ghost the retribution he desires, claiming that he will seek swift vengeance against his father's murder to prove his love for him: "Haste me to know't that I, with wings as swift as meditation or the thoughts of love, may sweep to my revenge" (1.5, 35–37). Ironically, Hamlet promises the ghost a swift revenge, though his revenge is anything but quick. The theme of delayed activity reoccurs throughout the plot of the story, because, consistently, the protagonist's time–table for accomplishing the task is slowed due to his pondering of moral issues. At this point, Hamlet is sure of Claudius' guilt, and has even declared that "Now could I drink hot blood and do such bitter business as the day Would quake to look on." (p. 99 lines 406–408) He comes to find King Claudius alone, and recognizes it as an opportunity to act, but almost immediately talks himself out of action on the bases that the King is praying, and will therefore go to heaven. He decides yet again to delay avenging his father's murder, this time until he can kill the King while he is in a vile condition, such as "When he is drunk asleep; or in his rage; Or in the incestuous pleasure of his bed." (p. 103 lines 89–90) Hamlet has failed to act for so long that the Ghost soon comes back to remind him of his duty. In the end, we see that Hamlet's inability to act indeed causes his fall, and that his failure costs him not only his life, but also his mother's. In the final scene, Hamlet duels with Laertes, who has conspired with the King to kill Hamlet. In the King's attempt to kill Hamlet, he accidentally poisons the Queen. • 64. The Tragedy of Hamlet Essay The Tragedy of Hamlet In life the border between sanity and madness is thin and undefined. At best it is a gray area, fuzzy and unclear. Yet it is this area that Shakespeare so deftly depicts in The Tragedy of Hamlet. The gray environment he weaves eventually renders it almost impossible to tell the sane from the insane, the ability to reason ultimately becomes the audience's sole determiner of a character's mental condition. Thus, Shakespeare is able to successfully tie his thoughts on reason and emotion to a character's sanity. In the play Hamlet, by Shakespeare, the main character fits the description for being a tragic hero. A tragic hero is a character who has experienced life more fully, whether by heroic action or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hamlet is rational enough to realize that the "undiscovered country from whose born/ No traveler returns" (3.1.79–80) may hold far worse realities for him than his present earthly uncertainties. The prince's composure and cool reason prevent him from taking his own life, or as he puts it, "the native hue of resolution/ Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought" (3.1.84–85). This view, that Shakespeare believed that suicide was only a legitimate option to the insane, is supported by evidence that he did not intend Hamlet to be insane. The most compelling evidence is found in the way Hamlet switches between being rational and acting mad, according to who he was talking to. For example in scene two Hamlet acts quite mad for Polonius. The old advisor even remarks upon Hamlet possessing "a happiness that often madness hits on, which reason and/ sanity could not so prosperously be delivered of" (2.2.211–213). Then, only moments later, Hamlet switches gears to deliver his "What a piece of work is man!" (2.2.297–314) speech, to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Likewise, his "To be or not to be..." (3.1.56–90) soliloquy, a rational and coherent speech on death, is directly followed by the famous "Nunnery Scene" (3.1.153). Also, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Hamlet Tragedy And Insanity Essay "To be, or not to be? That is the question" (Shakespeare 50). The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark was written by William Shakespeare as it became one of the most influential plays in world literature from the Seventeenth to the Twentieth–First Century. In all honesty, William Shakespeare, the "Bard of Avon", was regarded as the greatest playwright in English literature as his most famed plays include Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. The prominent trend in most of Shakespeare's writing is the use of tragedy as well as moral insanity, resulting in the protagonist's demise. Shakespeare was successful in implementing elements of tragedy and insanity in the phenomenal play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, as he captured the hearts of the Elizabethans as well as our contemporary society. Dr. James Cowles Prichard, a Bristol doctor in London, created a medical theory called the "Theory of Moral Insanity" to describe individuals who display a series of irregular behavior. There is a form of mental derangement in which the intellectual faculties [are uninjured], while the disorder is manifested principally or alone in the state of feelings, temper, or habits... The moral... principles of the mind... are depraved or perverted, the power of self–government is lost or greatly impaired, and the individual is... incapable... of conducting himself with decency... • 72. Revenge Tragedy In Hamlet The most common approach is revenge tragedy. Revenge tragedy is the act of a character feeling the need for revenge. The character does achieve the goal of revenge, but typically causes a tragedy by dying himself or causing other to die in the process. Hamlet goes through his own internal conflict and takes a long time to avenge his father's murder. Glyn Austen provides a view that Hamlet's revenge is "more orchestrated by his enemies than by himself." (Glyn 1) This argument is supported through many parts of the play. Through Hamlet's soliloquies, the audience can conclude that Hamlet is torn by his "mission." Although he clearly wants Claudius dead, he is constantly hesitant about his future actions. Even when he has adequate proof that his uncle did murder his father, it's almost as though Hamlet does not want to go through with it. Also presented is the notion that Hamlet avenged the actions against himself rather than the murder of his father. (Glyn 1) When Hamlet killed Claudius, Laertes had already poisoned him with the tip of his blade, and Gertrude was already poisoned by the wine as well. So, if anything, Hamlet avenged the actions against his mother and himself rather than the murder of his father. The second common approach is psychological. The psychological approach considers the character's, or author's, mind to attempt to gain a further understanding of the piece. Throughout the play, the ghost of Hamlet's father appears. • 78. Hamlet : Death And Death In The Tragedy Of Hamlet "It was not a life if lived without love." To have ever lived, is to experience the love and compassion that people provide. When that necessity of life is gone, one can succumb to self–worth; the failure and unfairness of nature evokes the question of ending life to a suffering man. That is why William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark captures the essence of death– the justification of self murder; to escape the tormenting reality that one is living in. Ophelia is overlooked as a pawn and faces a difficult life as she has little to no freedom to change her fate, resorting to suicide as an option to escape the impotent and inimical occurrences that haunt her life. Polonius and Laertes demand for Ophelia to avoid Hamlet, her dearly beloved, causing their love affair to diminish which leaves her in a heartbroken state. Laertes' recommendation of celibacy towards his sister prior to his voyage to France, demonstrates that Ophelia should not expose too much of herself to the prince of Denmark and keep him out of her desire. Fear it, Ophelia; fear it, my dear sister, and keep you in the rear of your affection, out of the shot and danger desire. The chariest maid is prodigal enough if she unmasks her beauty to the moon. Virtue itself' scapes not calumnious strokes.(1.3.37–42) Polonius advises Ophelia in a more aggressive manner as he urges his daughter to "not believe his vows, for they are brokers" (1.3. 136).
