The Importance Of Christopher Columbus Day
Christopher Columbus is the reason many Native Americans lost their land, and even their lives, so why is Columbus Day a national holiday in the
United States. This has been a common argument for people who disagree with the celebration of Christopher Columbus. Many people believe the
United States should celebrate Indigenous People's Day opposed to Columbus day. Their idea that Native Americans should be celebrated is a logical
argument. Native Americans were in fact the first known residents of the United States. However, Christopher Columbus' bravery and resiliency should
not be forgotten. Columbus made an incredible discovery and opened many doors of opportunity for his people and many others. For this reason,
Columbus Day should continue to be a holiday that is celebrated by the citizens of the United States. Columbus Day has been celebrated in the United
States for almost 150 years. It began in San Francisco in 1869 by a group of Italian Americans (Mai–Duc). Christopher Columbus was an Italian
explorer, so it was not surprising that Italian Americans devoted a day to his memory. Columbus' discovery allowed Italians to conquer and inhabit a
new, luxurious territory. It was intriguing, but not shocking that the rest of the United States adopted Columbus Day as a national holiday. It was in
1937 when the United States declared Columbus Day as a national holiday (Segarra). This holiday is a remembrance of Christopher Columbus, his
inspiring voyage, and ultimately his

Oppression and Class warfare Exposed in Dr. Howard Zinn’s...
Dr. Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States might be better titled A Proletarian's History of the United States. In the first three
chapters Zinn looks at not only the history of the conquerors, rulers, and leaders; but also the history of the enslaved, the oppressed, and the led.
Like any American History book covering the time period of 1492 until the early 1760's, A People's History tells the story of the "discovery" of
America, early colonization by European powers, the governing of these colonies, and the rising discontent of the colonists towards their leaders.
Zinn, however, stresses the role of a number of groups and ideas that most books neglect or skim over: the plight of the Native... Show more content on

From the Bahamas, Columbus sailed to Cuba and HispaГ±ola, the present–day home of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. One–hundred fifteen years
later and 1,500 miles to the north, the colony of Jamestown was founded by a group of English settlers led by John Smith; shortly after that the
Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded by a group of Puritans known to us today as the Pilgrims. Because of uneasy and hostile relations with the
nearby Pequot Indians, the Pequot War soon started between the colonists and the natives. Needless to say, the colonists won, but it was at the expense
of several dozen of their own and thousands of Pequots. But despite Indian conflict, exposure, starvation, famine, disease, and other hardships, the
English kept coming to America. In 1619 they were settled enough that they started bringing African slaves into the middle colonies. Before resorting
to Africans, the colonists had tried to subdue the Indians, but that idea failed before it was created. Zinn writes: "They couldn't force the Indians to
work for them, as Columbus had done. They were outnumbered, and while, with superior firearms, they could massacre the Indians, they would face
massacre in return. They could not capture them and keep them enslaved; the Indians were tough, resourceful, defiant, and at home in these woods, as
the transplanted Englishmen were not. "White servants had

Compare And Contrast Christopher Columbus And Christopher...
Throughout recorded human history, authors, leaders, and researchers, have documented the past from many different perspectives, and viewpoints.
Not every historian has the same stance on a certain issue, therefore, differences in point of view occur in almost every writing. In the textbook The
American Pageant, A People's History of theUnited States by Larry Schweikart, and Michael Allen, and Howard Zinn's A People's History of the
United States, the reader can see many different perspectives throughout each reading. The infamous explorer known as Christopher Columbus, has
been documented in many different ways. Depending on the reading, Columbus has be called everything from a "[...]symbol of the new age of hope",
to an inhuman tyrant who captured Indians and turned them into slaves.
In the well known textbook, The American Pageant, the reader learns about straightforward facts and events regarding Christopher Columbus.
Although the textbook provides the audience with good information, it struggles to go into great detail or depth surrounding Columbus and his
voyages in comparison to the two other sources. I believe the authors did a good job avoiding anything controversial, by only including facts and
referring to Columbus as a "successful failure" instead of a hero or barbarian. The book didn't carry much detail and wasn't that "juicy" of a source,
but fulfilled it's job as a history textbook. The document I choose to include was a map of Columbus' voyages. The map

A Patriot 's History : Thesis
Daniel Giaime10/27/2014 Part 1: The Introduction A Patriot's History: Thesis Larry Schweikart believes despite the excessive racism, sexism,
and bigotry throughout the history of the United States, when the story is told "fairly," all that can be taken away is a sense of awe at the
obstacles overcome, the blood split, and the nation built. Although corruption can be seen over the course of time, the freedom of the nation
overcame all else and created a bright light of a society in a world of dark oppression. Schweikart emphasizes the idea that history is often taught
from a single, biased perspective, clouding the true image of the American nation as it progressed over time. He also emphasizes the ideals of
character, tied to liberty, tied to property, and how they were all necessary for success. More generally, Schweikart believes that throughout the
history of the United States, it has proven time and time again to be a nation based on the principles of freedom and justice, exemplified through its
actions in every aspect, such as the liberation of people's and bringing them to a higher state of living, and the sharing of power with those who had
none, no matter where they came from, or who they were. "All men are created equal"; the United states is the "last, best hope" of earth; and America
"is great because it is good" all extend Schweikart's basic ideals that the United States' history, when viewed with the basic ideal of "the ends justify the
means," creates a story

The Patriot 's History Of The United States
After the Civil War, the United State began to experience an industrial growth that was unparalleled to any nation. There were new advancements
among America's transportation, manufacturing and agriculture industries. While an economic growth was occurring in the nation, the national
government was inactive, almost forgotten between all the new innovations achieved during the late 19th century. Looking back at theIndustrial
Revolution, there are many perspectives of the events that occurred during this time. Two readings on the late 19th century, The Patriot's History of the
United States, by Larry Schweikart and The People's History of the United States, by Howard Zinn, have their own takes. The perspectives on the
history, the tone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though the new inventions were ground–breaking and revolutionary, The People's History of the United
States were quick to point out the cruel conditions it brought. However, The Patriot's History of the United States, had a different perspective.
Larry Schweikart spoke more positively of the economical situation in America. The wages were "In terms of that era's cost of living...sufficient"
and used an example of what a typical family in Atlanta might earn and spend (Schweikart 435). The perspective of the wages differ from the two
authors. Howard Zinn had a negative tone toward the low wages, while Larry Schweikart kept a more positive tone towards worker's pay. In fact,
the two authors collide on the importance and significance of the elite class. Larry Schweikart wrote favorably of the millionaire that rose up during
this era. Schweikart wrote on page 436, "The good news was that there were more of the wealth." Larry Schweikart perspective on the rising class was
that the rich were beneficial to society, with their new ideas and innovations. On the other hand, Howard Zinn painted the rich as corruptible, and
greedy. The Industrial Revolution brought new technology that paved the way for the modern corporation. While some believed the top executives of
these businesses started from the bottom and rose to the top, Howard Zinn had a

This book has proven to be an enlightening read. It both teaches and inspires. Howard Zinn has offered us a perspective of the real story of American
history heretofore unavailable to us – history from the perspective of real people – immigrant laborers, American women, the working poor, factory
workers, African and Native Americans.
A People's History of the United States, originally published in 1980, as a work of non–fiction by the political scientist and American historian, Howard

The explorers were men, the landholders and merchants, the political leader's men, the military figures men. The very invisibility of women, the
overlooking of women, is a sign of their submerged status."
In Chapter 6 of his book, Zinn casts his view onto the new United States embroiled in facing the changing role of women. While women of the outer
classes – blacks, Indians and immigrants – most directly faced oppression, women of the moneyed and upper classes also began to organize for
political rights.
Zinn goes on to look at the post–Reconstruction period utilizing letters and journals of those who lived through this time. The issue of black civil
rights, abandoned by the North, left the southern states free to establish racial segregation without social resistance. This policy would continue the
legacy of racial discrimination in the South for nearly another century. Terror groups such as the Ku Klux Klan formed to enforce segregation.
In looking at more contemporary issues, Zinn utilizes interview records and other hard documentation to show us the real stories. For example, the
government moved slowly to end segregation, fearful of a change of the face of American power. We see how two of America's favorite presidents,
Eisenhower and Kennedy, did little to change the system during their administrations. Lyndon Johnson pushed for passage of the Civil Rights Bill of
1964. This was viewed

Chapter 1 , A people's History of the United States
Christopher Columbus came thinking he found Asia when in fact all he found was the Americas. The ship they were in was called Saint Maria.
The first place they landed was Cuba. They were in search for gold mostly, which Columbus promised the king and queen in Spain. He took the
Arawaks Indians as slaves when it was hard for him to find gold. When he arrived in Haiti he created the first military base called Navidad which
means charismas. Columbus then traveled to the Hispaniola and his thoughts was he arrived in China. He described the Indians as naive and willing
to share. Indians did not believe in marriage. To them people may choose who are their mates and if... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Natives were humiliated and dehumanized. Spaniards did not see the huge genocide that was going on , they just saw the land they was stealing from
the natives and the money they were getting out of it. Time past and more and more settled in what now is called the United States. The Englishmen
have settled near the east coast when coming to the Americas. English settlements kept growing so they needed to wipe out the natives out to have the
land. "Not able to enslave the Indians, and not able to live with them, the English decided to exterminate them" (page, 19). The Indians learned that
Europeans were and will always be stronger than them. They learned that European weapons will always be more powerful then whatever they made.
Europeans had guns, Indians had spares. Europeans were devious and trick Indians to turn to each other. Tribes were tricked by these masterminds and
started conflicted with each other and battles. The Europeans had mass murdered the native Americans with no sympathy. The native Americans could
not do anything about it so they had to listen to the European due to the fact they were more powerful. As for the Englishmen they used any type of
excuse to get into war. Europeans called native Americans Indians because when Columbus arrived in America he believed that he was in India so he
thought they were Indians, its in politically incorrect but calling them Indians is okay because they truly traveled from Asia to America

Similarities And Differences Of Exemplary Citizens
Exemplary Citizens
What does being a good citizen exactly mean? There are many factors that will affect if someone is viewed as a one. Being considered a good
citizen will depend on the country as every country is unique and sees some aspects differently compared to others. The United States of America and
China share similarities and differences through their preamble, constitution, and citizenship. Similarly, these countries use their preamble to create a
broad proposal of what a good citizen is. Both serve as a guide for what will be discussed in their constitution as well. In addition to this each
preamble has a part that explains where consent is derived from. Comparably they both proclaim that the power comes from the people. The United
States express the "We the People of the United States" statement, whereas China claims that "All power in the People's Republic of China belongs to
the people." These words are proof to both countries claim to be a democracy. A functioning democracy is the form of government that provides its
citizens with lots of freedom, opportunity, and prosperity. Although there are several similarities, differences can be found in the format or structure of
the preambles. The United States preamble is significantly smaller compared to China's. In general, the United States prefers the succinct version as it
allows the reader to remember more and/or grasp the main concept. Unlike the United States Constitution, China discusses lots of its

The modern world is rapidly changing. Events occur and often time's only one side of the story gets told. But to every event there are multiple way to
view it. Take the history of the United States of America for example. In Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen's book A Patriot's History of the United
States, the United States is viewed in a positive light. It tells the facts about the United States in a strait forward manner. However in Howard Zinn's
book A People's History of the United States, the United States is generally viewed in a negative light. Zinn highlights how the country has caused
problems while rarely admitting that in fact the United States has done more good for the world than harm. While both books are inherently biased

Zinn argues, "The New Deal's organization of the economy was mainly aimed at stabilizing the economy, and secondly at giving enough help to the
lower classes to keep them from turning a rebellion into a real revolution. (Zinn 393)" He leads the reader to believe that the benefits the lower classes
received from the New Deal were only bi–products of fixing the economy. That the government did not care if the lower classes benefited only as
long as the national economy was restored. Allen and Schweikart contend that the New Deal greatly benefited the people as well as fix the
economy. "Over the Hundred Days, FRD unleashed a torrent of presidential initiatives focused mainly on raising the minimum wage or providing
jobs. (Schweikart and Allen 564)" If then as Zinn contends that the New Deal did not focus on the lower classes enough then why did it create
millions of jobs for the unemployed and help improve the lives of workers by raising the minimum wage? Certainly this sounds like the kind of
thing that would drastically improve the lives of members of the lower class. Not only could they now have a job but they would be paid decent
wages for there work. Clearly Zinn's argument is flawed in the idea that the New Deal did not help the lower class enough. Allen and Schweikart also
believe the New Deal helped end the Great Depression. "Roosevelt's vision and courage, through the creation of the New Deal, led America out of the
Depression. (Schweikart and Allen 533)" They argue that because the New Deal provided for the working class, it was able to help drag the Unites
States out of the Great Depression by lowering unemployment and stimulating the economy. Zinn however states that the United States was only
pulled out of the Depression by the economic boom caused by the Second World War. "The unemployment, economic distress, and the consequent

The United States of America used a giant lie of freedom, democracy, and a communism scare to invade Vietnam. According to A People's History of
the United States by Howard Zinn, the U.S. is only interested in "rice, rubber, teak, corn, tin, spices, oil, and many others" that the country has to offer

They planned a coup to knock Diem out of office, but he and his brother got caught and murdered in a truck on November 1, 1963. After President
Kennedy was assassinated, the new president Lyndon B. Johnson planned on increasing the forces in Vietnam to defeat the National Liberation Front.
He staged the whole matter to be set on U.S. waters. He released to the media that an American destroyer had been attacked by the Northern
Vietnamese. However, the American destroyer that was supposed to be attacked was actually limited Vietnamese water, having surveillance on the
Vietnamese government. Later, the American destroyer was found unharmed. These lies were known as the Tonkin Affair which let President Johnson

How Did The Bible Influence The Spread Of Christianity
Christianity is a general designation of the various sects of Jesus Christ, which is the three largest religion in the world. It is a monotheistic religion
which include the Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and other smaller denominations. It also has the largest number of believers with widely influenced
for two thousand years of the history. When it comes to the influence of Christian culture on European and American literature, it is necessary to
mention "the Bible". "The Bible" is a Christian classic book which is a source of Christian doctrines and canons. The Christian people think "the
Bible" is the highest standards of people's religious faith and daily life. The Bible is divided into two parts: The first part is the Old Testament, and
the other is the New Testament. The former writing age is about the 2nd century BC which mainly records the Jewish religious before the birth ofJesus.

A People's History
For my summer assignment for AP U.S history I had to read the novel, A People's History of the United States. This novel is a nonfictional literary
work that was written by the American historian, playwright, and social activist named Howard Zinn. In this novel, Zinn attempts to present American
history through the viewpoint of the common people rather than the conquerors and the economical and political elite. The chapters that I had to read
from this book were chapters 1 through 10. The chapters were very informative and it allowed me to revisit major events in American History.

Before reading this chapter, all that I knew or learned about this event is it was a World Trade Center attack by Islamic terrorists that killed thousands

I say this because After Zinn discussed 9/11; he then explained how President Bush declared a war on terrorism. Zinn then states how George Bush
began to bomb Afghanistan, and he concludes that the U.S. was reacting to the horror of the incident by killing other innocent people that lived in
Afghanistan. This was essential to me because I was never known this happened after the event of 9/11. Near the end of the chapter, Zinn concludes
that the U.S. should change its policies so that they would no longer be a military superpower, but a humanitarian superpower to help those in need. I
support this statement that Zinn said because I hope that one day the U.S. would change its policies to benefit all those around the

crime of sorts. It is a crime because it distorts the truth rather than advances it and justice
cannot be had by any means other than the truth. If Zinn wants justice he needs to face
the truth and to face it he has to be willing to look for it. In my opinion he has attempted
nothing of the sort in this book.
Zinn's interpretation of the motivations of the founders with respect to the
Constitution and the Bill of Rights are inaccurate. For example, if you knew nothing
about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, Zinn would have you believe that they were
merely the results of a clever ploy by the rich landowners. To "buy" enough support from
the middle class to assure continuation of the system that kept the rich, wealthy. You
would not know that these documents and the ideas they reflect have been profoundly
important not only in the United States, but also throughout the world.
In my opinion his history of the Cold War is wrong as well. In reading about the
Cold War, one would emerge from Zinn's account believing that the U.S. government
had driven the arms race throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In his view the Soviets, it
seems, had no role in all of this. Zinn fails to mention that after the end of the Cold War,
what emerged from Soviet and then Russian sources strongly corroborated most of the

Reasons Why United States Went To War With The Spaniards
There are many reasons why the United States went to war with the Spaniards who were in Cuba and the Philippines; but the number one reason
was because of racism in those areas. When the Cubans were fighting for independence, the Americans saw that as an opportunity to go invade Cuba
and take their resources. The Americans came up with a policy called "open door" where America would take down other smaller countries for easy
access to markets. "The third group was a coalition of businessmen, intellectuals, and politicians who opposed traditional colonialism and advocated
instead a policy of an open door through which America's preponderant economic strength would enter and dominate all underdeveloped areas of the
world" (page 302 A People's History of the United States). Since Cuba was fighting for independence, it was considered a underdevelopment country.

Howard Zinn Thesis
Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States is a distinct alternative to most mainstream history textbooks. Zinn's perspective of different
complicated historical issues is exemplified through his unique writing and helps the reader understand different convoluted events. The point of view
that Zinn chooses allows him to express hardships and struggles through the perspective of America's victims, slaves, African–Americans, Native
Americans, the working poor, and the immigrant laborers. By speaking for the voiceless, Zinn is able to provide readers ample detail while looking at
sensitive times in American history. Zinn starts with Columbus and progressively moves into recent history; he extensively illustrates the hidden class
struggles and the fight to replace a broken political system, but still remains insightful and takes a holistic approach while evaluating American History.

Zinn in his book "A People's History of the United States,'' handles various issues. Though the graphic novel adaptation does not cover all the details of
the history of America, the author provides us with a critical view of the history of America where its leaders carry out actions independently and not
for the benefit of the whole population. It also provides us with examples of atrocities that the American army committed around the world and the
country's commitment to democracy that led it to instruct its army to join the second Word War. The author therefore focuses on the positive and the
negative aspect of American history in a captivating way through visual and dynamic production of historical records.

Legal and social inequality
Social inequality is a situation where some members of the society enjoy different amounts of wealth prestige and power. The society has placed its
members in rankings through unequal economics rewards and power. American society like all other nations has had its systems of socially stratifying
its inhabitants. This began from the era of slavery where there was legalized inequality and human ownership among other forms. Zinn portrays this
inequality even up to the present where racism acts continue to occur as indicated by the various killings carried out by the police to the black young
men with an excuse that they were caught in an act of crime. In the present society, the social class system has dominated the American society. The
upper class includes those who are extremely wealthy and they are few, the upper–middle class includes those who have affluent professions like the
doctors and lawyers. The other group is the lower–middle class which includes the nurses and small business owners among others with less affluent
professions. The others are the working class where most people lie and finally the lower class who are mostly dependants. According to Zinn,

Zinn's A People's History of the United States, we take a look at American history through a different lens, one that is not focused on over glorifying
our history, but giving us history through the eyes of the people. "This is a nation of inconsistencies", as so eloquently put by Mary Elizabeth Lease
highlights a nation of people who exploited and sought to keep down those who they saw as inferior, reminding us of more than just one view on a
nation's history, especially from people and a gender who have not had an easy ride. In some respects, we can attribute the founding of America and all

Shay's rebellion came to fruition from fed up citizens that took up action to fight what they saw as a tyrannical ruler. Met with the possibility of
more conflict, the government was forced to create the Bill of Rights, which would grant American citizens a set of basic rights that no one could
take away. The hypocrisy and inconsistency of the United Stated was shown, as the three fifths compromise was put into effect as well, slave would
now count as three fifths of a person. A bill that had taken a pledge to give civil rights to the people of America was released the same time slaves
were counted as slightly more than half a person. These problems that arose from inequality would shape many of the events that were to follow.
Eventually the United States became known as the land of the free, however this did not apply to everyone in the country and was more applicable
to white males. Women fought for their own rights, which the land of the free had forgotten to give them in the Bill of Rights. They fought for
suffrage, better working conditions, and equal pay. It took years for this to come to fruition, and even equal pay is still an issue women in America
have to fight for. The Native Americans got it especially hard around this time, with President Andrew Jackson going against them and often break
America's promises to them, which years later lead to the Trail of Tears. The Trails of Tears forced many Natives off their land and to relocate

Chapter 3 of A People's History of the United States by...
Poor people had always been the backbone of the U.S. Their contribution to building America has always been overlooked. Rich people look upon
the lower class with distaste, calling the unfortunate ones, "savages." This is why Zinn named Chapter 3 of his book, "People's History," "Persons of
Mean and Vile Conditions." He wanted to shed light on those who were taken advantage of while history was in the making– the slaves, the poor
people, the Indians also known as the "persons of Mean and Vile Conditions," in the eyes of the wealthy. Since the rich does not want to be categorized
with the poor, they have several techniques and strategies to maintain the status quo where the rich white people were on top of the social pyramid, the
poor blacks and Indians on the bottom. For example, some of the techniques are to prohibit interracial marriage between the blacks and whites so "that
the white population could remain 'pure' and in control." (Zinn 35), "Negroes were forbidden to carry any arms while the white....would get
muskets......the distinctions of status between white and black servants became more and more clear." (Zinn 56) Authors of history textbooks,
traditional historians, and politicians will definitely argue about the assertions made by Howard Zinn. They will say something similar to, "Zinn is
unpatriotic." But isn't it unpatriotic to call the people whose back the U.S. was built upon, "persons of mean and vile conditions"? "Bostonians rioted

The Gilded Age And The Gilded Age
Both books look at the Gilded Age in different perspectives as to how it affected the USA. A People's History of the United States talks about how the
people rebelled for their rights as working citizens, showing a in–depth view in how the American people lived during this time. A Patriot's History of
the United States takes a broad approach, just stating the facts and telling from a political view in what was happening in the government. Even though
both books talk from different perspectives, these authors hit some touchy details that they share similar or different views on. In this case, A Patriot's
History of the United States does a better job at dealing with these topics because even though broad, the author shows the logic behind the decisions
made. Even though these two novels have different perspectives of what was going on during the Gilded Age, they both talk about the effectiveness of
the unions, the conditions in which the workers were in, and the struggles of the daily people trying to survive. One of the major things to come out of
the 19th century were the formation of labor unions as it was a response to social and economic changes of the industrial revolution. One of the major
unions the books talked about was the Knights of Labor, an organization made to find fairness in the workplace. However, they only supported white
fairness, which made them unliked. Furthermore, they were not the only unions formed during this time. The Western

Zinn's Argumentative Analysis
One of the most well known parts of American history is how Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean in 1492 and evidently discovered the Americas.
Where some historians view Christopher Columbus as a heroic adventurer who forever changed history, some view Christopher Columbus as a
conqueror who was responsible for one of the world's worst genocides. These two theories help prove that in history historians tend to use subjective
history. Subjective history is w hen history is shown from an opinionated or emotional stand point rather than what actually occurred. Additionally
subjective history is something all historians use to some degree considering it's nearly impossible to record history with hundred percent accuracy.
One example of subjective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Zinn's subjective history comes from his empathy towards the Native Americans and the lack of acknowledgement the Native Americans received
throughout history. In fact, the lack of acknowledgement the Native Americans received throughout history is the reason why Zinn choose to write
a subjective history novel about the way they have been treated through out American history. For example, every year in October we celebrate
Columbus Day, a day where Americans celebrate a heroic explorer and consequently forget about all the bloodshed. Most people tend to overlook
the bad in situations and just focus on the good and Columbus Day is the perfect example of this. Also in schools most history classes only talk
about how Columbus "discovered" America and nothing more leaving out whole chunks of history. This is why its important for historian's like Zinn
to use subjective history. By using subjective history it often allows different voices to be heard that often are not heard. In the case of Howard
Zinn's novel A People's History of the United States he uses subjective history to help show the world that while Columbus did change the course of
history the way he in which he did barbaric, as well as to educate people on the hardship and struggle Native Americans have gone through for

Howard Zinn on Colonization
Though a vast majority of students learn about Columbus' great conquests and celebrate him as a hero, very few know of the horrible atrocities he
caused when he first landed in America. While considered a hero by most in the United States, Zinn argues that people should think twice about
Columbus' actions, and question whether his behavior to the Indians was necessary. In quotes one and five, Zinn clearly depicts his thoughts on the
atrocities done by Columbus and other colonists to the natives living in America. Zinn first refers to the author Morrison and how he deals with who
Columbus really was. Instead of "[lying] outright about the past" or "[omitting] facts, which might lead to unacceptable conclusions," Morrison tells the

In certain circumstances, bets were made between soldiers "as to who, with one stroke of the sword, could split a man in two." Other soldiers would
throw children of a village they sacked into a river by their feet, shouting, "Boil there, you offspring of the devil!"
Later on, as more colonists came to the new world, even more Indians were killed. When missionaries tried to convert the Indians, there were
miscommunications over the teachings, which lead to even more deaths. When pictures of Mary and other religious symbols were given to the Native
Americans, they buried them so as to ask God for a good harvest. The colonists interpreted this as denying the Christian faith, and therefore burned the
Indians at the stake, so as to purify their souls. The actions of the missionaries and other colonists were so evil that when an Indian was being burned at
the stake, he "asked the Franciscan friar if Christians all went to Heaven. When told that they did, [the Indian] said he would prefer to go to Hell." The
horrible atrocities that the European settlers brought upon the Indians were awful. It decimated the population, leaving less than one tenth of the
Indians living compared to the amount before Columbus found America.
Later on in A People's History of theUnited States, Zinn questions whether "all this bloodshed and deceit – from Columbus to Cortez, Pizarro, the
Puritans – [was] a necessity for the human race to progress from savagery to civilization." Zinn

Compare And Contrast Zinn And George Tindall
Howard Zinn and George Tindall both display very different perspectives on the rebel war in Cuba as well as the character portrayal of Theodore
Roosevelt. Zinn offers a much more critical look at the involvement of America in the in Cuban revolt as well as a more derogatory view of
Roosevelt. Tindall however, paints a very honorable picture of both America and Roosevelt in the time of war. In his book America, A Narrative
History George Tindall portrays the Spanish–American war in Cuba as a gallant act of Cuban protection made by the United States. There is no mention
of the Cuban rebel perspective or their actual condition during the war; only the interests of the U.S. are addressed in Tindall's volume. In his chapter
discussing the war in Cuba, Tindall largely attributes the commencement of battle to the pressures that were onset after the explosion of the Maine.
This, and other small mentions of political officials like Theodore Roosevelt pressuring for war against spain and to protect American trade are what
Tindall describes as the motives for immediate intrusion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He uses a quote saying "if the United States waited too long, the Cuban revolutionary forces would emerge victorious, replacing the collapsing Spanish
regime". Zin also questions the intentions of the U.S. forces, implying that they desired to take control over Cuba in a manner that barely differed from
the previous Spanish rule. After the Platt Amendment was enacted, a letter was written to Theodore Roosevelt saying, "There is, of course, little or no
independence left Cuba under the Platt Amendment". In the wake of this newly established amendment, the U.S. proceeded to take almost full control
Cuba; a process that closely resembled imperialistic

Has History Got It All Wrong?
One of the biggest things people look for in a story is an emotional connection that will draw them in and can make them feel as though they are seeing
things in a whole new light. Howard Zinn undoubtedly attempts to force an emotional connection to his reader in the first chapter of his 1980 textbook
"A People's History of the United States". In this chapter, Zinn tells his reader about how Europe was unremittingly asperous toward the rest of the
world, particularly in the Americas in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. While trying to make his point, though, Zinn uses a gratuitous amount of
emotion in his work and very little fact and logic. Zinn's work also features a large amount of bias to further his argument by severely manipulating his
evidence and completely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A People's History Of The United States Chapter 1 Summary
Q&A for A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn Logan Baumer
Chapter 1:
1.Howard Zinn's main purpose to writing A People's History of the United States is to tell the story of our country through the perspective of the people.
More specifically, the original inhabitants, minorities, and immigrants. He also wants to expose what has happened in the past that is not typically
mentioned in our history books. Zinn vows however to not just criticize but to also mention the good things our leaders have done.
2.Howard Zinn's thesis for pages one through eleven is that Christopher Columbus has been given a false image of being a heroic, peaceful person who
discovered the Americas by history books. In reality, Columbus gave false reports to the Spanish crown and oversaw... Show more content on

Howard Zinn argues that the Indians are indeed, not inferior by mentioning all of the progress they have made and their actions while being completely
isolated. His support being their journey over the Bering Straits land mass 25,000 years ago, responding to the different environments with their
respective soil and climate, the development of hundreds of different cultures, a productive and innovative agricultural system, and their architecture.
Chapter 2:
1.According to Howard Zinn, the root cause of racism in the United States was slavery. This is because slavery separated people based on their color of
their skin and segregated them. People who were white were not slaves and were treated normally while people who were black were treated like
sub–humans and discriminated, over time, this led to negative attitudes towards blacks.
2.The reason why Africans were considered better slaves than Native Americans was because the Indians outnumbered the colonists, were defiant,
tough, and were on their own land. Africans on the other hand, were already considered slaves by Europeans and thought to be helpless when captured
because they were completely separated from their

Theme Of Obedience In A People's History Of The United States
Obedience has been the downfall of history. In the novel A People's History of The United States by Howard Zinn, Zinn portrays how throughout the
United States, War, genocide and slavery has been caused by the simple act of Obedience before the civil war period such as Columbus search for
new land, the robbing of the native Americans and the enslavements of Africans, as well as after of the post–civil war period such as Vietnam war,
women suffrage and people's war.
Before the pre–civil war period, in the novel the first chapter summarizes Columbus and the English encounter with the Indians and its progress. A
quote from Zinn, "the Indiana's, Columbus reported, are so naive and so free with their possession that no one who had witnessed them ... Show more

The woman suffrage cannot be compared to the genocide of millions, the mass casualties of war, or the enslavement of the African American but it
was a war millions of women fought for. The majority of women were suppressed by their husbands and the regulations in society leaving women
neglected politically, economically, and socially with little authority or opportunity to encompass change. Women were looked upon in society as the
house workers who were incapable of having respectable thoughts on decision making whatsoever, therefore detaching women from all aspects of life
other than their motherly responsibility's, to be a wife and a mother. Zinn, quoted "it seems that women have best been able to make their first escape
from the prison of wifeliness, motherhood, femininity housework beautification isolation when their services have been desperately needed – whether
in industry or in war or in social movements. Each time practicality pulled the women out of her prison in a kind of work– parole program– the
attempt was made to push her back once the need was over..." ("19/Surprise 504." A People's History of theUnited States. ) this quote shows how

Compare And Contrast Howard Zinn And The People's History
1. Each author had their own objective in writing each of the books. Both books tell the tale of history much like any other textbook. However, each
book leaves out certain events creating a noticeable bias between the two. In The People's History of the United States, the liberal author Howard Zinn
writes about American history in a particularly unconventional way to convince the reader that there is another side to the history of the United States,
one that does not necessarily invoke a feeling of patriotism, but rather showcases several flaws. On the other hand, Larry Schweikart and Michael
Allen write about American history in a very patriotic way in A Patriot's History of the United States to persuade the reader that one should feel a
sense of pride in the history of the United States. Although they bear many similarities due to history not changing, the differences between The
People's History of the United States and A Patriot's History of the United States are very pronounced due to the bias of each author.
2. By assigning both, The People's History of the United States, and A Patriot's History of the United States, it allows us to take a look at two
different views of American history. Howard Zinn, the author of The People's History of the United States, seems to tell the story from the view of
those not in power, like those in slavery, women, and Native Americans. Conversely, the authors of A Patriot's History of the United States, Larry

Continuities In Military
Their have been continuities and changes over time with respect to how the United States constructs its military. Things have stayed the same and
things have changed from 1776 to 2015. Also, the same topic can be handled differently based on many factors. For example, the source of the
information plays a role in how that information is presented. Their are many continuities with respect to how the United States constructs its military
between 1776 to 2015. The military was and still is an appealing option for poor Americans. As written by Howard Zinn in A People's History of The
United States, "In fact, the military became a place of promise for the poor, who might rise in rank, acquire some money, change their social status."
This was true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One major change is that the draft is no longer a means of getting recruits for the military. According to Camillo Mac Bica in "Rich Man's War and a
Poor Man's Fight", "During the final years of the Vietnam War, Congress, at the behest of President Richard M. Nixon, refused to extend the draft
law." This decision resulted in an end to the draft on July 1, 1973. This was the beginning of the all–volunteer force still in use today. Another
difference is the type of people fighting in the military. According to Howard Zinn in A People's History of The United States, "[Revolutionary
America] contained a large and growing number of fairly poor people, and many of them did much of the actual fighting and suffering between I775
and 1783: A very old story." This shows that between 1775 and 1783 poor people were making up the bulk of the military. In contrast, Tim Kane in
The Demographic Characteristics of U.S. Military Enlistment says, "Like their peers in 1999 and 2003, recruits in 2004 and 2005 came primarily
from middle–class areas. Poor areas are proportionally underrepresented in the wartime years (2003–2005)." This is an example of how more recently
recruits have been coming less from poor areas and more from the middle–class. Furthermore exemplified from this is that the reason for people going
into the military has changed over time. According to Howard

Subjective Point Of View Analysis
When interpreting history, there are multiple points of view that a person can take. A subjective point of view is a personal view or opinion. The
objective point of view gives only the facts and does not invoke more than can be inferred from the story's dialogue. In the book A People's History of
the United States, Howard Zinn chooses to write a subjective history, which differs from the objective point of view given in the Amsco text. Zinn's
decision to write a subjective history gives people a more complete and complex version of U.S. history than the objective look given in most
textbooks today. Howard Zinn's decision to write a subjective history gives people a more well–rounded view of U.S. history. Rather than presenting

It is as if they, like Columbus, deserve universal acceptance, as if they–the Founding Fathers–represent the nation as a whole" (Zinn, Howard. A

Victims and executioners are quietly overlooked and men who have committed mass murders and conquests are viewed as heroes. Zinn's decision to
write a subjective history takes into account the views of all people, including quotes and opinions from people of all classes. In chapter 1 of his book
A People's History of the United States, he covers Christopher Columbus' explorations to North America. Rather than portraying Columbus as a hero,

viewpoints of Native Americans, priests, explorers, and even Columbus himself. A main source–of–information that Zinn uses is a young

Throughout his book, Zinn's writing tends to use illustrative language to draw focus on the suffering faced by these minority group, with graphic

Similarities Between China And The United States
I will discuss the similarities and differences between China and the United States in economy, politics, history, culture and the future development.
Initially, in economic terms, the People's Republic of China implements the socialist market economy, which originates from China's economic reform
under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping. It is based on the dominant position of state–owned sector and the open market economy("Socialist market
economy," n.d.). While the United States implements the capitalist economic system, namely, "it is based on private ownership of the means of
production and their operation for profit.(Shudhanshu, 2016)." Thus, their economic system is different.

That is both China and the US gained their independence of the nation by winning the war. For example, the victory of the American Revolutionary
War ended the British colonial rule, which realized the independence of the nation, established a relatively democratic political system, and brought a
positive impact on the economic development of the US. In the history of China, the second Anti–Japanese War was a nationalist war that China had
fought against Japanese aggression. In the victory of this war, China completely defeated the Japanese aggressors, which defended the integrity of the
nation's territory, and also laid a significant foundation for the founding of the new China. In addition, these two countries also have experienced civil
war. However, the nature of the civil war is different. The Chinese civil war was a conflict between the Communist Chinese Communist Party and the
Kuomintang over China's legitimate administration of power("Chinese Civil War," n.d.). While the essence of the American civil war was the
economic and institutional differences between north and south states, which led to the outbreak of

Analysis Of Howard Zinn 's ' The United States '
"There is an underside to every age about which history does not often speak, because history is written from records left by the privileged."
― Howard Zinn, A People 's History of the United States
Zinn once remarked, "Objectivity is impossible and it is also undesirable. That is, if it were possible it would be undesirable, because if you have any
kind of a social aim, if you think history should serve society in some way; should serve the progress of the human race; should serve justice in some
way, then it requires that you make your selection on the basis of what you think will advance causes of humanity" (Flynn). It is pretty clear to the
reader that Zinn believes that socialism and Communism are systems that advance the cause of humanity, and that America is a reactionary, terrorist
state; those beliefs form the foundation of his tendentious and error–ridden book.
In A People's History of theUnited States, greed is the explanation for every major historical event. As we see in Zinn's book, just to name a few
examples, the separation from Great Britain, the Civil War, and World Wars I and II were driven by motives involving rich Americans more or less
seeking to improve themselves at the expenses of others. To me it seems that there is clearly a disparity between the promise and practice of
democracy and capitalism in twentieth century America. For Zinn, the answer is the same as the question pretty much. America is a "cruel, slaveholder
society whose goal is

In chapter "The Other Civil War" of A People's History of the United States, Howard Zinn described the underlying class tensions caused by
industrialization during the nineteenth century. He claimed that these tensions would have led to radical labor reforms if the working class's anger had
not been directed towards other issues. Zinn used The Age of Enterprise by Thomas C. Cochran and William Miller to show theupper class's
indifference towards the problems of the lower class and to prove that the rich manipulated the poor to promote their own interests. He also used Class

Racism offered another outlet for class frustration. Furthermore, the Civil War gave industrial workers a feeling of unity with their employers and
turned their anger towards a common enemy. Zinn implied that poor conditions and government oppression would have caused a proletariat revolt if
not for other outlets for anger fueled by class divisions.
The Age of Enterprise demonstrated the importance of industry to the events of the nineteenth century. While the authors shared some of Zinn's views,
they refute many of the claims he makes in "The Other Civil War." Cochran and Miller argued that the actions of the government and the eastern
businessmen were all done to promote industry and enterprise. In this way, they agreed with Zinn that profit was the primary concern of politicians
during the Industrial Revolution. Zinn used their description of Daniel Webster to demonstrate the importance of profit to Americans. Likewise,
Cochran and Miller believed that Webster's industrial policies were the source of his popularity. They described a group of families in Boston known
as the Boston Associates who controlled many resources like water power and transportation facilities. Like Cochran and Miller, Zinn contended that
these families exemplified the industrialists' disregard for the troubles of their workers. Their descriptions of the poor conditions and the rise of class

The Importance Of Christopher Columbus Day

  • 1. The Importance Of Christopher Columbus Day Christopher Columbus is the reason many Native Americans lost their land, and even their lives, so why is Columbus Day a national holiday in the United States. This has been a common argument for people who disagree with the celebration of Christopher Columbus. Many people believe the United States should celebrate Indigenous People's Day opposed to Columbus day. Their idea that Native Americans should be celebrated is a logical argument. Native Americans were in fact the first known residents of the United States. However, Christopher Columbus' bravery and resiliency should not be forgotten. Columbus made an incredible discovery and opened many doors of opportunity for his people and many others. For this reason, Columbus Day should continue to be a holiday that is celebrated by the citizens of the United States. Columbus Day has been celebrated in the United States for almost 150 years. It began in San Francisco in 1869 by a group of Italian Americans (Mai–Duc). Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer, so it was not surprising that Italian Americans devoted a day to his memory. Columbus' discovery allowed Italians to conquer and inhabit a new, luxurious territory. It was intriguing, but not shocking that the rest of the United States adopted Columbus Day as a national holiday. It was in 1937 when the United States declared Columbus Day as a national holiday (Segarra). This holiday is a remembrance of Christopher Columbus, his inspiring voyage, and ultimately his ... • 2. Oppression and Class warfare Exposed in Dr. Howard Zinn’s... Dr. Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States might be better titled A Proletarian's History of the United States. In the first three chapters Zinn looks at not only the history of the conquerors, rulers, and leaders; but also the history of the enslaved, the oppressed, and the led. Like any American History book covering the time period of 1492 until the early 1760's, A People's History tells the story of the "discovery" of America, early colonization by European powers, the governing of these colonies, and the rising discontent of the colonists towards their leaders. Zinn, however, stresses the role of a number of groups and ideas that most books neglect or skim over: the plight of the Native... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the Bahamas, Columbus sailed to Cuba and HispaГ±ola, the present–day home of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. One–hundred fifteen years later and 1,500 miles to the north, the colony of Jamestown was founded by a group of English settlers led by John Smith; shortly after that the Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded by a group of Puritans known to us today as the Pilgrims. Because of uneasy and hostile relations with the nearby Pequot Indians, the Pequot War soon started between the colonists and the natives. Needless to say, the colonists won, but it was at the expense of several dozen of their own and thousands of Pequots. But despite Indian conflict, exposure, starvation, famine, disease, and other hardships, the English kept coming to America. In 1619 they were settled enough that they started bringing African slaves into the middle colonies. Before resorting to Africans, the colonists had tried to subdue the Indians, but that idea failed before it was created. Zinn writes: "They couldn't force the Indians to work for them, as Columbus had done. They were outnumbered, and while, with superior firearms, they could massacre the Indians, they would face massacre in return. They could not capture them and keep them enslaved; the Indians were tough, resourceful, defiant, and at home in these woods, as the transplanted Englishmen were not. "White servants had ... • 3. In the textbook The American Pageant, A People's History of theUnited States by Larry Schweikart, and Michael Allen, and Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States, the reader can see many different perspectives throughout each reading. The infamous explorer known as Christopher Columbus, has been documented in many different ways. Depending on the reading, Columbus has be called everything from a "[...]symbol of the new age of hope", to an inhuman tyrant who captured Indians and turned them into slaves. In the well known textbook, The American Pageant, the reader learns about straightforward facts and events regarding Christopher Columbus. Although the textbook provides the audience with good information, it struggles to go into great detail or depth surrounding Columbus and his voyages in comparison to the two other sources. I believe the authors did a good job avoiding anything controversial, by only including facts and referring to Columbus as a "successful failure" instead of a hero or barbarian. The book didn't carry much detail and wasn't that "juicy" of a source, but fulfilled it's job as a history textbook. The document I choose to include was a map of Columbus' voyages. The map ... • 4. A Patriot 's History : Thesis Daniel Giaime10/27/2014 Part 1: The Introduction A Patriot's History: Thesis Larry Schweikart believes despite the excessive racism, sexism, and bigotry throughout the history of the United States, when the story is told "fairly," all that can be taken away is a sense of awe at the obstacles overcome, the blood split, and the nation built. Although corruption can be seen over the course of time, the freedom of the nation overcame all else and created a bright light of a society in a world of dark oppression. Schweikart emphasizes the idea that history is often taught from a single, biased perspective, clouding the true image of the American nation as it progressed over time. He also emphasizes the ideals of character, tied to liberty, tied to property, and how they were all necessary for success. More generally, Schweikart believes that throughout the history of the United States, it has proven time and time again to be a nation based on the principles of freedom and justice, exemplified through its actions in every aspect, such as the liberation of people's and bringing them to a higher state of living, and the sharing of power with those who had none, no matter where they came from, or who they were. "All men are created equal"; the United states is the "last, best hope" of earth; and America "is great because it is good" all extend Schweikart's basic ideals that the United States' history, when viewed with the basic ideal of "the ends justify the means," creates a story ... • 5. The Patriot 's History Of The United States After the Civil War, the United State began to experience an industrial growth that was unparalleled to any nation. There were new advancements among America's transportation, manufacturing and agriculture industries. While an economic growth was occurring in the nation, the national government was inactive, almost forgotten between all the new innovations achieved during the late 19th century. Looking back at theIndustrial Revolution, there are many perspectives of the events that occurred during this time. Two readings on the late 19th century, The Patriot's History of the United States, by Larry Schweikart and The People's History of the United States, by Howard Zinn, have their own takes. The perspectives on the history, the tone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though the new inventions were ground–breaking and revolutionary, The People's History of the United States were quick to point out the cruel conditions it brought. However, The Patriot's History of the United States, had a different perspective. Larry Schweikart spoke more positively of the economical situation in America. The wages were "In terms of that era's cost of living...sufficient" and used an example of what a typical family in Atlanta might earn and spend (Schweikart 435). The perspective of the wages differ from the two authors. Howard Zinn had a negative tone toward the low wages, while Larry Schweikart kept a more positive tone towards worker's pay. In fact, the two authors collide on the importance and significance of the elite class. Larry Schweikart wrote favorably of the millionaire that rose up during this era. Schweikart wrote on page 436, "The good news was that there were more of the wealth." Larry Schweikart perspective on the rising class was that the rich were beneficial to society, with their new ideas and innovations. On the other hand, Howard Zinn painted the rich as corruptible, and greedy. The Industrial Revolution brought new technology that paved the way for the modern corporation. While some believed the top executives of these businesses started from the bottom and rose to the top, Howard Zinn had a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Howard Zinn has offered us a perspective of the real story of American history heretofore unavailable to us – history from the perspective of real people – immigrant laborers, American women, the working poor, factory workers, African and Native Americans. A People's History of the United States, originally published in 1980, as a work of non–fiction by the political scientist and American historian, Howard Zinn. Zinn seeks to show us American history through the eyes of common, everyday people rather the views of biased historians. The explorers were men, the landholders and merchants, the political leader's men, the military figures men. The very invisibility of women, the overlooking of women, is a sign of their submerged status." In Chapter 6 of his book, Zinn casts his view onto the new United States embroiled in facing the changing role of women. While women of the outer classes – blacks, Indians and immigrants – most directly faced oppression, women of the moneyed and upper classes also began to organize for political rights. Zinn goes on to look at the post–Reconstruction period utilizing letters and journals of those who lived through this time. The issue of black civil rights, abandoned by the North, left the southern states free to establish racial segregation without social resistance. This policy would continue the legacy of racial discrimination in the South for nearly another century. Terror groups such as the Ku Klux Klan formed to enforce segregation. In looking at more contemporary issues, Zinn utilizes interview records and other hard documentation to show us the real stories. For example, the government moved slowly to end segregation, fearful of a change of the face of American power. We see how two of America's favorite presidents, Eisenhower and Kennedy, did little to change the system during their administrations. Lyndon Johnson pushed for passage of the Civil Rights Bill of 1964. This was viewed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A People's History Of The United States Chapter 1 Summary Francheska Rosado Chapter 1 , A people's History of the United States Christopher Columbus came thinking he found Asia when in fact all he found was the Americas. The ship they were in was called Saint Maria. The first place they landed was Cuba. They were in search for gold mostly, which Columbus promised the king and queen in Spain. He took the Arawaks Indians as slaves when it was hard for him to find gold. When he arrived in Haiti he created the first military base called Navidad which means charismas. Columbus then traveled to the Hispaniola and his thoughts was he arrived in China. He described the Indians as naive and willing to share. Indians did not believe in marriage. English settlements kept growing so they needed to wipe out the natives out to have the land. "Not able to enslave the Indians, and not able to live with them, the English decided to exterminate them" (page, 19). The Indians learned that Europeans were and will always be stronger than them. They learned that European weapons will always be more powerful then whatever they made. Europeans had guns, Indians had spares. Europeans were devious and trick Indians to turn to each other. Tribes were tricked by these masterminds and started conflicted with each other and battles. The Europeans had mass murdered the native Americans with no sympathy. The native Americans could not do anything about it so they had to listen to the European due to the fact they were more powerful. As for the Englishmen they used any type of excuse to get into war. • 8. Similarities And Differences Of Exemplary Citizens Exemplary Citizens What does being a good citizen exactly mean? There are many factors that will affect if someone is viewed as a one. Being considered a good citizen will depend on the country as every country is unique and sees some aspects differently compared to others. The United States of America and China share similarities and differences through their preamble, constitution, and citizenship. Similarly, these countries use their preamble to create a broad proposal of what a good citizen is. Both serve as a guide for what will be discussed in their constitution as well. In addition to this each preamble has a part that explains where consent is derived from. Comparably they both proclaim that the power comes from the people. The United States express the "We the People of the United States" statement, whereas China claims that "All power in the People's Republic of China belongs to the people." These words are proof to both countries claim to be a democracy. A functioning democracy is the form of government that provides its citizens with lots of freedom, opportunity, and prosperity. Although there are several similarities, differences can be found in the format or structure of the preambles. The United States preamble is significantly smaller compared to China's. In general, the United States prefers the succinct version as it allows the reader to remember more and/or grasp the main concept. In attempt to mitigate this risk, Buffalo Wild Wings can seek out local interested parties in attempt to franchise in China. This action will do a few things. • 10. Larry Schweikart The modern world is rapidly changing. Events occur and often time's only one side of the story gets told. But to every event there are multiple way to view it. Take the history of the United States of America for example. In Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen's book A Patriot's History of the United States, the United States is viewed in a positive light. It tells the facts about the United States in a strait forward manner. However in Howard Zinn's book A People's History of the United States, the United States is generally viewed in a negative light. Zinn highlights how the country has caused problems while rarely admitting that in fact the United States has done more good for the world than harm. While both books are inherently biased based ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Zinn argues, "The New Deal's organization of the economy was mainly aimed at stabilizing the economy, and secondly at giving enough help to the lower classes to keep them from turning a rebellion into a real revolution. (Zinn 393)" He leads the reader to believe that the benefits the lower classes received from the New Deal were only bi–products of fixing the economy. That the government did not care if the lower classes benefited only as long as the national economy was restored. Allen and Schweikart contend that the New Deal greatly benefited the people as well as fix the economy. "Over the Hundred Days, FRD unleashed a torrent of presidential initiatives focused mainly on raising the minimum wage or providing jobs. (Schweikart and Allen 564)" If then as Zinn contends that the New Deal did not focus on the lower classes enough then why did it create millions of jobs for the unemployed and help improve the lives of workers by raising the minimum wage? Certainly this sounds like the kind of thing that would drastically improve the lives of members of the lower class. Not only could they now have a job but they would be paid decent wages for there work. Clearly Zinn's argument is flawed in the idea that the New Deal did not help the lower class enough. Allen and Schweikart also believe the New Deal helped end the Great Depression. "Roosevelt's vision and courage, through the creation of the New Deal, led America out of the Depression. (Schweikart and Allen 533)" They argue that because the New Deal provided for the working class, it was able to help drag the Unites States out of the Great Depression by lowering unemployment and stimulating the economy. Zinn however states that the United States was only pulled out of the Depression by the economic boom caused by the Second World War. "The unemployment, economic distress, and the consequent turmoil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Patriot Vs Schweikart History will always be seen from different points of view. A German would view the Holocaust in a different light than a Jew would. This novel is a nonfictional literary work that was written by the American historian, playwright, and social activist named Howard Zinn. In this novel, Zinn attempts to present American history through the viewpoint of the common people rather than the conquerors and the economical and political elite. The chapters that I had to read from this book were chapters 1 through 10. The chapters were very informative and it allowed me to revisit major events in American History. I say this because After Zinn discussed 9/11; he then explained how President Bush declared a war on terrorism. This was essential to me because I was never known this happened after the event of 9/11. Near the end of the chapter, Zinn concludes that the U.S. should change its policies so that they would no longer be a military superpower, but a humanitarian superpower to help those in need. For example, if you knew nothing about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, Zinn would have you believe that they were merely the results of a clever ploy by the rich landowners. To "buy" enough support from the middle class to assure continuation of the system that kept the rich, wealthy. You would not know that these documents and the ideas they reflect have been profoundly important not only in the United States, but also throughout the world. Reasons Why United States Went To War With The Spaniards There are many reasons why the United States went to war with the Spaniards who were in Cuba and the Philippines; but the number one reason was because of racism in those areas. When the Cubans were fighting for independence, the Americans saw that as an opportunity to go invade Cuba and take their resources. The Americans came up with a policy called "open door" where America would take down other smaller countries for easy access to markets. "The third group was a coalition of businessmen, intellectuals, and politicians who opposed traditional colonialism and advocated instead a policy of an open door through which America's preponderant economic strength would enter and dominate all underdeveloped areas of the world" (page 302 A People's History of the United States). By speaking for the voiceless, Zinn is able to provide readers ample detail while looking at sensitive times in American history. Being considered a good citizen will depend on the country as every country is unique and sees some aspects differently compared to others. The United States of America and China share similarities and differences through their preamble, constitution, and citizenship. Similarly, these countries use their preamble to create a broad proposal of what a good citizen is. Both serve as a guide for what their constitution will be discussing as well. Meaning that because of this both groups of people are encouraged to be very involved as the power is coming from them. "This is a nation of inconsistencies", as so eloquently put by Mary Elizabeth Lease highlights a nation of people who exploited and sought to keep down those who they saw as inferior, reminding us of more than just one view on a nation's history, especially from people and a gender who have not had an easy ride. The hypocrisy and inconsistency of the United Stated was shown, as the three fifths compromise was put into effect as well, slave would now count as three fifths of a person. Rich people look upon the lower class with distaste, calling the unfortunate ones, "savages." This is why Zinn named Chapter 3 of his book, "People's History," "Persons of Mean and Vile Conditions." He wanted to shed light on those who were taken advantage of while history was in the making– the slaves, the poor people, the Indians also known as the "persons of Mean and Vile Conditions," in the eyes of the wealthy. Since the rich does not want to be categorized with the poor, they have several techniques and strategies to maintain the status quo where the rich white people were on top of the social pyramid, the poor blacks and Indians on the bottom. For example, some of the techniques are to prohibit interracial marriage between the blacks and whites so "that the white population could remain 'pure' and in control." (Zinn 35), "Negroes were forbidden to carry any arms while the white....would get muskets......the distinctions of status between white and black servants became more and more clear." (Zinn 56) Authors of history textbooks, traditional historians, and politicians will definitely argue about the assertions made by Howard Zinn. One of the major things to come out of the 19th century were the formation of labor unions as it was a response to social and economic changes of the industrial revolution. Where some historians view Christopher Columbus as a heroic adventurer who forever changed history, some view Christopher Columbus as a conqueror who was responsible for one of the world's worst genocides. These two theories help prove that in history historians tend to use subjective history. Additionally subjective history is something all historians use to some degree considering it's nearly impossible to record history with hundred percent accuracy. One example of subjective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Zinn's subjective history comes from his empathy towards the Native Americans and the lack of acknowledgement the Native Americans received throughout history. In fact, the lack of acknowledgement the Native Americans received throughout history is the reason why Zinn choose to write a subjective history novel about the way they have been treated through out American history. For example, every year in October we celebrate Columbus Day, a day where Americans celebrate a heroic explorer and consequently forget about all the bloodshed. Most people tend to overlook the bad in situations and just focus on the good and Columbus Day is the perfect example of this. Also in schools most history classes only talk about how Columbus "discovered" America and nothing more leaving out whole chunks of history. This is why its important for historian's like Zinn to use subjective history. By using subjective history it often allows different voices to be heard that often are not heard. In quotes one and five, Zinn clearly depicts his thoughts on the atrocities done by Columbus and other colonists to the natives living in America. Later on, as more colonists came to the new world, even more Indians were killed. When missionaries tried to convert the Indians, there were miscommunications over the teachings, which lead to even more deaths. When pictures of Mary and other religious symbols were given to the Native Americans, they buried them so as to ask God for a good harvest. The colonists interpreted this as denying the Christian faith, and therefore burned the Indians at the stake, so as to purify their souls. The actions of the missionaries and other colonists were so evil that when an Indian was being burned at the stake, he "asked the Franciscan friar if Christians all went to Heaven. Both books tell the tale of history much like any other textbook. However, each book leaves out certain events creating a noticeable bias between the two. In The People's History of the United States, the liberal author Howard Zinn writes about American history in a particularly unconventional way to convince the reader that there is another side to the history of the United States, one that does not necessarily invoke a feeling of patriotism, but rather showcases several flaws. According to Camillo Mac Bica in "Rich Man's War and a Poor Man's Fight", "During the final years of the Vietnam War, Congress, at the behest of President Richard M. Nixon, refused to extend the draft law." This decision resulted in an end to the draft on July 1, 1973. This was the beginning of the all–volunteer force still in use today. Another difference is the type of people fighting in the military. According to Howard Zinn in A People's History of The United States, "[Revolutionary America] contained a large and growing number of fairly poor people, and many of them did much of the actual fighting and suffering between I775 and 1783: A very old story." This shows that between 1775 and 1783 poor people were making up the bulk of the military. In contrast, Tim Kane in The Demographic Characteristics of U.S. Military Enlistment says, "Like their peers in 1999 and 2003, recruits in 2004 and 2005 came primarily from middle–class areas. Poor areas are proportionally underrepresented in the wartime years (2003–2005)." This is an example of how more recently recruits have been coming less from poor areas and more from the middle–class. Furthermore exemplified from this is that the reason for people going into the military has changed over time. According to Howard ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Subjective Point Of View Analysis When interpreting history, there are multiple points of view that a person can take. A subjective point of view is a personal view or opinion. The objective point of view gives only the facts and does not invoke more than can be inferred from the story's dialogue. In the book A People's History of the United States, Howard Zinn chooses to write a subjective history, which differs from the objective point of view given in the Amsco text. Zinn's decision to write a subjective history gives people a more complete and complex version of U.S. history than the objective look given in most textbooks today. Howard Zinn's decision to write a subjective history gives people a more well–rounded view of U.S. history. Rather than presenting American history solely from the view of elites, ... A People's History of the United States.). In this excerpt from the book, Zinn describes the result of presenting history solely from the view of elites. Victims and executioners are quietly overlooked and men who have committed mass murders and conquests are viewed as heroes. Zinn's decision to write a subjective history takes into account the views of all people, including quotes and opinions from people of all classes. In chapter 1 of his book A People's History of the United States, he covers Christopher Columbus' explorations to North America. Rather than portraying Columbus as a hero, Zinn describes the genocide and enslavement committed by Columbus' crew in early Native American civilizations. He achieves this by taking the viewpoints of Native Americans, priests, explorers, and even Columbus himself. A main source–of–information that Zinn uses is a young ... He brings particular focus to the abuse and suffering of these underprivileged groups under the hands of the oppressor and tyrants such as native americans under the explorer, african american under the colonist, and the poor lower class under the elite upper class. In Schweikart and Allen they focus on the creation of the colonies and the struggles the colonist face and their ways of overcoming trials such as negotiation between indians, usage of slaves as a cheap labor force to grow food and tobacco, and the inequalities enforce on them by the british rule leading to the revolution. Throughout his book, Zinn's writing tends to use illustrative language to draw focus on the suffering faced by these minority group, with graphic details on the massacre of the indians and the horrendous conditions of the slave ship. While Schweikart and Allen writing leans more towards the chronicling and dramatizing of important events in chronological order with commentary that served to explain the workings of their society or defend the colonist's action. Zinn's book also has a more pessimistic feel focusing on the negatives of certain events and the damage the event caused such as the slave trade as a materialistic form of cheap labor, On the other hand Schweikart and Allen's book appeals heavily to the patriot's with glorified version of historical events such as the genius of the founding fathers in creation of the constitution, and choosing to undermine or ignored some of the ... President Truman at a press conference, in an effort to reverse the situation, mentioned about considering a scheme of using an atomic bomb and suggested to use weapons of all kinds. MacArthur urged strong support to blockade the China coast, bomb the Chinese mainland, make a second wire land by landing Taiwan forces in China Southern, and to expand the war expansion theory using an atomic bomb. Of course, war expanded theory was opposed strongly by the United Kingdom due to worry about the Korean War developing into a third World War. • 36. Similarities Between China And The United States I will discuss the similarities and differences between China and the United States in economy, politics, history, culture and the future development. Initially, in economic terms, the People's Republic of China implements the socialist market economy, which originates from China's economic reform under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping. It is based on the dominant position of state–owned sector and the open market economy("Socialist market economy," n.d.). While the United States implements the capitalist economic system, namely, "it is based on private ownership of the means of production and their operation for profit.(Shudhanshu, 2016)." Thus, their economic system is different. Subsequently, China and the US also have distinct political systems. The United ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That is both China and the US gained their independence of the nation by winning the war. For example, the victory of the American Revolutionary War ended the British colonial rule, which realized the independence of the nation, established a relatively democratic political system, and brought a positive impact on the economic development of the US. In the history of China, the second Anti–Japanese War was a nationalist war that China had fought against Japanese aggression. In the victory of this war, China completely defeated the Japanese aggressors, which defended the integrity of the nation's territory, and also laid a significant foundation for the founding of the new China. In addition, these two countries also have experienced civil war. However, the nature of the civil war is different. The Chinese civil war was a conflict between the Communist Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang over China's legitimate administration of power("Chinese Civil War," n.d.). • 37. Analysis Of Howard Zinn 's ' The United States ' "There is an underside to every age about which history does not often speak, because history is written from records left by the privileged." ― Howard Zinn, A People 's History of the United States Zinn once remarked, "Objectivity is impossible and it is also undesirable. That is, if it were possible it would be undesirable, because if you have any kind of a social aim, if you think history should serve society in some way; should serve the progress of the human race; should serve justice in some way, then it requires that you make your selection on the basis of what you think will advance causes of humanity" (Flynn). It is pretty clear to the reader that Zinn believes that socialism and Communism are systems that advance the cause of humanity, and that America is a reactionary, terrorist state; those beliefs form the foundation of his tendentious and error–ridden book. In A People's History of theUnited States, greed is the explanation for every major historical event. As we see in Zinn's book, just to name a few examples, the separation from Great Britain, the Civil War, and World Wars I and II were driven by motives involving rich Americans more or less seeking to improve themselves at the expenses of others. To me it seems that there is clearly a disparity between the promise and practice of democracy and capitalism in twentieth century America. For Zinn, the answer is the same as the question pretty much. America is a "cruel, slaveholder society whose goal is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In A People's History of the United States, Howard Zinn tells America's history from the perspective of those who did not necessarily prosper as a result of America's creation. Through the eyes of the Native Americans, African slaves, and poor white servants, Zinn tells a story different from the typical tale of a prosperous and virtuous young nation attempting to make its place in the world. Instead, Zinn tells a tale of brutality, genocide, and greed, along with the prosperity told in other versions. By exploring America's history through the many people groups involved, the reader can better understand the paradoxes of equality for all that still exist today. • 40. The Other Civil War of a People's History of The United... In chapter "The Other Civil War" of A People's History of the United States, Howard Zinn described the underlying class tensions caused by industrialization during the nineteenth century. He claimed that these tensions would have led to radical labor reforms if the working class's anger had not been directed towards other issues. Zinn used The Age of Enterprise by Thomas C. Cochran and William Miller to show theupper class's indifference towards the problems of the lower class and to prove that the rich manipulated the poor to promote their own interests. He also used Class and Community by Alan Dawley to offer examples of working class resistance, government oppression, and the effects of the Civil War. While Zinn's use of Class and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Racism offered another outlet for class frustration. Furthermore, the Civil War gave industrial workers a feeling of unity with their employers and turned their anger towards a common enemy. Zinn implied that poor conditions and government oppression would have caused a proletariat revolt if not for other outlets for anger fueled by class divisions. The Age of Enterprise demonstrated the importance of industry to the events of the nineteenth century. While the authors shared some of Zinn's views, they refute many of the claims he makes in "The Other Civil War." Cochran and Miller argued that the actions of the government and the eastern businessmen were all done to promote industry and enterprise. In this way, they agreed with Zinn that profit was the primary concern of politicians during the Industrial Revolution. Zinn used their description of Daniel Webster to demonstrate the importance of profit to Americans. Likewise, Cochran and Miller believed that Webster's industrial policies were the source of his popularity. They described a group of families in Boston known as the Boston Associates who controlled many resources like water power and transportation facilities. Like Cochran and Miller, Zinn contended that these families exemplified the industrialists' disregard for the troubles of their workers.
