Banksy is one of the famous English graffiti artist, film director, painter and political activist through the use of painting. He has produced different
satirical street art combined with subversive epigrams and dark humor of graffiti. These have been executed in the distinctive stenciling method.
Therefore, the paper analyzes how Banksy has changed the people's view of graffiti as being vandalism to a form of controversial political issues
using street art. The name Banksy has ignited controversy and piqued curiosity. He is undoubtedly one of the famous and most controversial street
artists who has emerged on the global stage. The fact that the identity Banksy remains unknown after more than twenty years on the graffiti scene
improves the intrigue that surrounds most of his work. There are various artworks of Banksy that have appeared in, Canada, England, America,
Australia, France, Palestine and Israel and Jamaica. His pictorial, as well as, satirical messages are seen across the boundaries of art, philosophy,

History Of The United States And The Uk
With many reports and studies conducted on the history of graffiti in the United States and the UK, one must not overlook the history of street art in
France. With France being a dignified instigator of political changes in modern history, France always honored the revolutionary spirit, which fit
perfectly with the art that emerged out of resistance. In today's time, France, and Paris especially, both enforce strict laws against vandalism and the
damage of public property and monuments. A law enforced starting in 1994, determines up to 10 years in jail, with fines up to 150,000 euros for
vandalism of public landmarks. A big part of the street art appeal lies in the anonymous case of the artistic messenger, which by the style of the... Show

Infused with both politics and poetics, Ernest Pignon–Ernest used wheat pastes to tell an alternative modern history of emotions and spirits of those in
need of remembrance. In the early 70s, he threw up silkscreen portraits of Arthur Rimbaud around the poet's favorite locals in Paris. Today, he is still as
active as he was before, continuously drawing attention to the margin with amazing installations. From its beginnings, graffiti in France assimilated
many different media outlets from all of the attention graffiti was getting. Since the media had already used propaganda, it was just easier to
assimilate. One of the most famous and well known methods in street art were stencils. Due to Banksy's outstanding creativity introduced by a French
artist, who influenced the famous dry Brit humor openly. That person was Blek le Rat (B.K), an innovator and a great inspiration to all, started
handing out his life size rat stencils and other signature popular images around Paris in the 1980s. Beginning in 1981, rats crawled like crazy around
the streets of Paris, courtesy of Blek le Rat, considered to be the father of modern stencil art (Allen, November 2014). "My stencils are a present,
introducing people to the world of art, loaded with a political message," he told The Independent

Graffiti : Vandalism By Many People
Graffiti has been called vandalism by many people. If cities around the world, converted old abandon buildings and warehouses into places where art
can bloom, this would change the world and would/could decrease or even stop illegal public defacement of property. Graffiti may be seen as
vandalism, but graffiti has many positive attributes associated with it as well. Having abandoned buildings and warehouses in cities are a major burden
and problem. Cities should help me turn abandoned buildings around the world, into a place where art and expression can bloom through graffiti.
Graffiti is a tremendous problem when it is used to deface property. Why do people create graffiti? Gang symbols, are how gangs show territory,
just as animals would. City 's that allow gang symbols are supposedly working against the interest of the people and are instead supporting gangs.
Some people use graffiti as a way to show their political views. Sometimes the opinions may not always be the nicest though. People use graffiti to
express their love for someone or something, but even if it is meant to express good it is seen as a bad thing or illegal most of the time. (Kershaw)
Studies show that sometimes graffiti can have a wave effect. Sometimes heavily, graffitied or vandalized areas experience an increase in crime.
Violence and crimes involving gangs have been most commonly linked to graffiti. Public disorder, crime, including littering and loitering, along with
property destruction can be

How Does The Control Of Production Mean For The Media...
How does "the space of possibilities" (Bourdieu 1983) both theoretically and physically, define the media, medium, and message that is produced
within it? What does the act of production mean for the media produced? Media, through technology and its use by agents in social and material
production, operates on a local and a global level through its production and dissemination. This creates spaces in which roles and agendas can be
played out to the conclusion of an end product. This end product, however, is not only the produced media, but the anticipated reception of the
consumer and the after–effects of the content specifically targeted by the producers or more generally as a consumable thing by a wider audience.
Whether we talk about the local or the global, something that shouldn't be discounted is the cultural accumulation and dispersion that takes place in
both spaces in practice. Hannerz writes, "culture is learned and acquired in social life" (Hannerz 1998: 8), "it is somehow integrated" (ibid), and
"these collectivities" (ibid), are "affected by interconnectedness in space" (ibid). The third point is the most important when we talk about the global, as
the global has become created and defined by the interconnectedness it inevitably generates. This essay will examine the 'spaces' within media
production, which facilitate and constrain that production, especially "the space of possibilities" (Bourdieu 1983), or as Foucault named it the "field of

Essay On Shepard Fairey
In late 2007 Shepard Fairey created a poster from an image of Barack Obama with the word Hope underneath. The artwork was created for the
2008 presidential campaign and Shepard Fairey sold around 300 copies on his first day of distribution. After selling 950 prints at a cost of 25 to
50 dollars to make back the costs of creating the artwork Shepard Fairey uploaded a free downloadable file containing the image to his website and
social media accounts. The artwork was quickly replicated and turned digital being spread in real life and online by the wider public. Shepard
Fairey's digital copy has been replicated and shared online by multiple news outlets, websites and social media pages. The Barack Obama "Hope"
artwork has also been replicated and used to produce posters, stickers, apparel and merchandise sold on unofficially on websitesincluding Amazon and
Ebay.In an interview with Washinton post Shepard Fairey stated "This isn't a limited edition print. It's unlimited" referring to the mass distribution of
his artwork online. The rapid sharing of Shepard Fairey'sHope poster online allowed the public to create real copies of the artwork in various formats

Public Art: Blek Le Rat And Banksy
The importance of Public Art in communities stems from a place of creativity, voice and rebellion. All art is a form of communication whether it is
street art or museum art. Artists make art to express and address their political views, mark the anniversary of something, tell a story, etc. Public art
creates a sense of community in cities and towns because it reflects what the places believe in. Whether it is street art or museum art, most all humans
admire what artists express because it is easily accessible and almost always demonstrates a story. Street artists such as "Blek Le Rat" and "Banksy"
have used their talent to create urban art that reflects societal, political, and economic views along with a pinch of dark humour. These reflections

Bansky's Street Art
Street art is a form of public art that makes use of urban space, usually unsanctioned and in defiance of typical art values. Although illegal in nature,
street art has become increasingly popular within the past decade, with the spotlight focused on anonymous graffiti artist, Banksy. His unique stenciling
style creates powerful subversive images incorporated into the urban landscape. His art provokes thought about the content, context and authenticity in
regards to both his work and the art world entirely.
Street art functions as art for the public, meaning it can be enjoyed by the masses as opposed to just those who make an effort to go to a gallery. This
direct interaction with the public is effective particularly because people's habits have become modified throughout the age of mechanical
reproduction, as explained by Walter Benjamin. "Every day the urge grows stronger to get hold of an object at very close range by way of its likeness,
its reproduction" (Benjamin). The instant a new Banksy piece is discovered, the Internet is bombarded with pictures, opinions and the location of the
new art. Through pictures the viewer is still able to evaluate the content, but the context and the aura of the original are destroyed. A picture of street
art is exactly that, a picture, but street art is an experience that can only have full impact when seen in person. Unfortunately the existence of new
street art can be brief and is often defaced by other vandals. In this case, a

The Validity of Street Art as a Catalyst for Political and Social Change
Introduction
Street art and graffiti are two different styles of urban art, and yet they still hold some of the same characteristics. After all, street art was born out of
graffiti, and an article in Huffington Post described their relationship in the clearest way: "Graffiti was the template, the means, the method. Street art
adopted all of this and pushed the boundaries of what outside art can be, going beyond anything achieved during the Golden Age of graffiti's early
evolution " (McCarthy). In every city, there is evidence of graffiti and street art, both legal and illegal. Street art includes more "art–like" styles, with
more imagery than just words. Because of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main two artists that will be looked at are Shepard Fairey and Blek le Rat. Although these two artists have very different styles of art, they are
connected by the fact that they take inspirations from social or political dialogue. Fairey is a street artist located in New York, with a following
comparable to Banksy. I chose him because he is from South Carolina, and he's also one of the most well known street artists. He has created his own
brand based off of art he created in college, and this brand is very controversial in the street art community. The other artist I will be examining is Blek
le Rat, who is known as the "father of stencil graffiti" (Walde, 42). Anyone who sees Le Rat's art immediately thinks of Banksy, as their styles are very
similar. Banksy's art is based off of Le Rat's, and yet he is not as well known. For my own product, I will be analyzing these two artist's work,
specifically Fairey's Obama Hope poster, and Le Rat's Homelessness series. These two pieces are more geared towards activism, which is the main idea
of this project. For my own product, I will be creating two pieces, one based on a social issue, and one on a political issue. I've decided that I will
be doing one piece on ovarian cancer, which has affected my aunt. The idea behind it is that it will show both my sister (who cut her hair for my aunt)

Types of Graffiti
Whether it's in a positive or negative way, it is clear that graffiti has a large impact on today's society. However, the majority of people have little to no
knowledge about this emerging art form that surrounds them. Graffiti comes in a multitude of different styles and formats, from the quotes and
numbers that constantly pop up inside bathroom stalls and on school desks to works of art that encompass entire buildings. This essay provides a
concise overview of the prominent categories of graffiti: tags, stencil, wildstyle, blockbusters, heaven, and pieces.
Tags
Primarily first name based, tags are the most common type of graffiti. These are what you would typically see scribbled on train cars and bridges
on your daily commute. Tags are typically done in a single color, and are quick enough to create that they can be made in a matter of seconds.
They consist mainly of names or nicknames, or a short phrase. A good example of a tag was the American pop culture fad, known as "Kilroy was
here", a simple drawing of a bald man with a prominent nose peering over a wall accompanied by the phrase Kilroy was here, which quickly became
an amusing icon because of it's ability to pop up anywhere. 2. Stencil Stencils are complicated works of graffiti more similar to paintings, made simple
with the use of a thick sheet of cardboard cut into a stencil. They achieve the appearance of paintings with only

Banksy Conceptual Framework Essay
BANKSY
ARTIST
Banksy is a pseudonymous England–based graffiti artist, political activist, film director, and painter.
His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humor with graffiti done in a distinctive stenciling technique. Such artistic works of
political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world.
Known for his contempt for the government in labeling graffiti as vandalism, Banksy displays his art on public surfaces such as walls, even going as
far as to build physical prop pieces. Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti directly himself; however, art auctioneers have been known to attempt
to sell his street art on location and leave the problem of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He can actually draw."
ARTWORK
Asked about his technique, Banksy said:
I use whatever it takes. Sometimes that just means drawing a moustache on a girl's face on some billboard, sometimes that means sweating for days
over an intricate drawing. Efficiency is the key.
Stencils are traditionally hand drawn or printed onto sheets of acetate or card, before being cut out by hand. Because of the secretive nature of
Banksy's work and identity, it is uncertain what techniques he uses to generate the images in his stencils, though it is assumed he uses computers for
some images due to the photocopy nature of much of his work.
He mentions in his book, Wall and Piece, that as he was starting to do graffiti, he was always too slow and was either caught or could never finish the
art in one sitting. So he devised a series of intricate stencils to minimise time and overlapping of the colour.
There is dispute in the street art world over the legitimacy of stencils, with many artists criticizing their use as "cheating."
AUDIENCE
Peter Gibson, a spokesman for Keep Britain Tidy, asserts that Banksy's work is simple vandalism, and Diane Shakespeare, an official for the same
organization, was quoted as saying: "We are concerned that Banksy's street art glorifies what is essentially vandalism." In his column for The
Guardian, satirist Charlie Brooker wrote of Banksy "...his work looks dazzlingly clever to idiots."

Street Art Essay Topics
Street art is visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. The term
gained popularity during the graffiti art boom of the early 1980s and continues to be applied to subsequent incarnations. Stencil graffiti, wheatpasted
poster art or sticker art, and street installation or sculpture are common forms of modern street art. Video projection, yarn bombing and Lock On
sculpture became popularized at the turn of the 21st century.
The terms "urban art", "guerrilla art", "post–graffiti" and "neo–graffiti" are also sometimes used when referring to artwork created in these contexts.
Traditional spray–painted graffiti artwork itself is often included in this category, excluding territorial graffiti or pure vandalism.
Artists who choose the streets as their gallery are often doing so from a preference to communicate directly with the public at large, free from perceived
confines of the formal art world. Street artists sometimes present socially relevant content infused with esthetic value, to attract attention to a cause or
as a form of "art provocation". Common variants include adbusting, subvertising and other culture jamming, the abolishment of private property and
reclaiming the streets.
Some street artists use "smart vandalism" as a way to raise awareness of social and political issues. Other street artists simply see urban space as an
untapped format for personal artwork, while others may

Street Art: The Accessibility Of Street Art
One interesting thing about street art is that even with the negative connotations of illegal tagging and painting on public property, there's still a huge
market for public art. However, some artists do not want to be paid because they think street art is supposed to be a more free way to create art, and
being paid for it would be "selling out". While graffiti just used to be created in order to be known, both modern graffiti and street art has become a way
for artists to break out of the conventional art world. The accessibility of street art often prompts artist to use it as a way to influence the viewer, and
send a message. It differs from artist to artist what topic they want to convey, but the majority of artists do seem to use their... Show more content on

Banksy has essentially the exact same style and le Rat, almost to the point of ripping off le Rat's style entirely. It's very sad, because Banksy makes
more money and is more well known than le Rat, and le Rat's pieces are often mistaken for Banksy's. Le Rat is of two minds on this topic. On the
one hand, he only thinks that anything he says about Banksy will be taken out of context and he will be the one under fire (Battersby). However,
he does think that Banksy helps to call attention to street art, saying "'It is important that people recognize what we do, and accept it for what it
is," he states. "It is art. Urban artists are forced to write on public property because there is a lack of space assigned to us'" (Philby), which goes
back to the idea of gallery space being both too restrictive and too selective for street artists. One of the more recent pieces Blek le Rat created was
on the topic of homelessness. He made his signature black and white stencils of homeless people sitting and lying on the ground. The idea was to
call attention to the homeless people living in cities that people see every day and disregard. It's an ironic subject, as the popularity of street art
makes le Rat's art a hot topic, but homeless people are not a popular subject at all. "...people will walk directly over actual homeless people, but will
stop to discuss a painting of a homeless person on a wall" (Stencil

His real name and date of birth are unknown despite repeated false reports, hoaxes and attempts to uncover the information. His work shows up on
public surfaces, the sides of buildings and walls throughout the world. Art auctioneers sell this much in demand street art at high prices. His work
usually comes with an anti–establishment or anti–war message. Rats, police, soldiers and the elderly are often included in his art. His first film Exit
Through the Gift Shop received an Academy Award nomination in 2011. The 2014 Webby Awards honored him as person of the year. But who is the
artist, activist, and filmmaker whose work led to "the Banksy effect?" And why is his work so sought after?
Trained as a Butcher
According to the book Home Sweet Home by author, graphic designer and friend Tristan Manco, Banksy was born in 1974 and grew up in Bristol,
England. Manco also wrote that Banksy trained as a butcher but became involved in the Bristol underground scene during the late 1980s aerosol boom.
The scene involved collaborations with musicians and artists. Banksy himself has said that his work was inspired by graffiti artist Robert Del Naja, also
known as 3D and a founding member of the band Massive Attack. Art critics and observers have compared Banksy 's work to Blek le Rat, whose real
name is Xavier Prou and who is known as the father of stencil graffiti.
In the early 1990s, Banksy started as a freehand graffiti artist, using stencils as elements in his pieces. However, by

  • 2. History Of The United States And The Uk With many reports and studies conducted on the history of graffiti in the United States and the UK, one must not overlook the history of street art in France. With France being a dignified instigator of political changes in modern history, France always honored the revolutionary spirit, which fit perfectly with the art that emerged out of resistance. In today's time, France, and Paris especially, both enforce strict laws against vandalism and the damage of public property and monuments. A law enforced starting in 1994, determines up to 10 years in jail, with fines up to 150,000 euros for vandalism of public landmarks. A big part of the street art appeal lies in the anonymous case of the artistic messenger, which by the style of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Infused with both politics and poetics, Ernest Pignon–Ernest used wheat pastes to tell an alternative modern history of emotions and spirits of those in need of remembrance. In the early 70s, he threw up silkscreen portraits of Arthur Rimbaud around the poet's favorite locals in Paris. Today, he is still as active as he was before, continuously drawing attention to the margin with amazing installations. From its beginnings, graffiti in France assimilated many different media outlets from all of the attention graffiti was getting. Since the media had already used propaganda, it was just easier to assimilate. One of the most famous and well known methods in street art were stencils. Due to Banksy's outstanding creativity introduced by a French artist, who influenced the famous dry Brit humor openly. That person was Blek le Rat (B.K), an innovator and a great inspiration to all, started handing out his life size rat stencils and other signature popular images around Paris in the 1980s. Beginning in 1981, rats crawled like crazy around the streets of Paris, courtesy of Blek le Rat, considered to be the father of modern stencil art (Allen, November 2014). • 3. Graffiti : Vandalism By Many People Graffiti has been called vandalism by many people. If cities around the world, converted old abandon buildings and warehouses into places where art can bloom, this would change the world and would/could decrease or even stop illegal public defacement of property. Graffiti may be seen as vandalism, but graffiti has many positive attributes associated with it as well. Having abandoned buildings and warehouses in cities are a major burden and problem. Cities should help me turn abandoned buildings around the world, into a place where art and expression can bloom through graffiti. Graffiti is a tremendous problem when it is used to deface property. Why do people create graffiti? Gang symbols, are how gangs show territory, just as animals would. City 's that allow gang symbols are supposedly working against the interest of the people and are instead supporting gangs. Some people use graffiti as a way to show their political views. Sometimes the opinions may not always be the nicest though. People use graffiti to express their love for someone or something, but even if it is meant to express good it is seen as a bad thing or illegal most of the time. (Kershaw) Studies show that sometimes graffiti can have a wave effect. Sometimes heavily, graffitied or vandalized areas experience an increase in crime. Violence and crimes involving gangs have been most commonly linked to graffiti. Public disorder, crime, including littering and loitering, along with property destruction can be ... • 4. How Does The Control Of Production Mean For The Media... How does "the space of possibilities" (Bourdieu 1983) both theoretically and physically, define the media, medium, and message that is produced within it? What does the act of production mean for the media produced? Media, through technology and its use by agents in social and material production, operates on a local and a global level through its production and dissemination. This creates spaces in which roles and agendas can be played out to the conclusion of an end product. This end product, however, is not only the produced media, but the anticipated reception of the consumer and the after–effects of the content specifically targeted by the producers or more generally as a consumable thing by a wider audience. Whether we talk about the local or the global, something that shouldn't be discounted is the cultural accumulation and dispersion that takes place in both spaces in practice. Hannerz writes, "culture is learned and acquired in social life" (Hannerz 1998: 8), "it is somehow integrated" (ibid), and "these collectivities" (ibid), are "affected by interconnectedness in space" (ibid). The third point is the most important when we talk about the global, as the global has become created and defined by the interconnectedness it inevitably generates. This essay will examine the 'spaces' within media production, which facilitate and constrain that production, especially "the space of possibilities" (Bourdieu 1983), or as Foucault named it the "field of strategic ... • 5. Essay On Shepard Fairey In late 2007 Shepard Fairey created a poster from an image of Barack Obama with the word Hope underneath. The artwork was created for the 2008 presidential campaign and Shepard Fairey sold around 300 copies on his first day of distribution. After selling 950 prints at a cost of 25 to 50 dollars to make back the costs of creating the artwork Shepard Fairey uploaded a free downloadable file containing the image to his website and social media accounts. The artwork was quickly replicated and turned digital being spread in real life and online by the wider public. Shepard Fairey's digital copy has been replicated and shared online by multiple news outlets, websites and social media pages. The Barack Obama "Hope" artwork has also been replicated and used to produce posters, stickers, apparel and merchandise sold on unofficially on websitesincluding Amazon and Ebay.In an interview with Washinton post Shepard Fairey stated "This isn't a limited edition print. • 6. Public Art: Blek Le Rat And Banksy The importance of Public Art in communities stems from a place of creativity, voice and rebellion. All art is a form of communication whether it is street art or museum art. Artists make art to express and address their political views, mark the anniversary of something, tell a story, etc. Public art creates a sense of community in cities and towns because it reflects what the places believe in. Whether it is street art or museum art, most all humans admire what artists express because it is easily accessible and almost always demonstrates a story. Street artists such as "Blek Le Rat" and "Banksy" have used their talent to create urban art that reflects societal, political, and economic views along with a pinch of dark humour. • 7. Bansky's Street Art Street art is a form of public art that makes use of urban space, usually unsanctioned and in defiance of typical art values. Although illegal in nature, street art has become increasingly popular within the past decade, with the spotlight focused on anonymous graffiti artist, Banksy. His unique stenciling style creates powerful subversive images incorporated into the urban landscape. His art provokes thought about the content, context and authenticity in regards to both his work and the art world entirely. Street art functions as art for the public, meaning it can be enjoyed by the masses as opposed to just those who make an effort to go to a gallery. This direct interaction with the public is effective particularly because people's habits have become modified throughout the age of mechanical reproduction, as explained by Walter Benjamin. "Every day the urge grows stronger to get hold of an object at very close range by way of its likeness, its reproduction" (Benjamin). The instant a new Banksy piece is discovered, the Internet is bombarded with pictures, opinions and the location of the new art. Through pictures the viewer is still able to evaluate the content, but the context and the aura of the original are destroyed. A picture of street art is exactly that, a picture, but street art is an experience that can only have full impact when seen in person. Unfortunately the existence of new street art can be brief and is often defaced by other vandals. In this case, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Street Art Research Paper The Validity of Street Art as a Catalyst for Political and Social Change Introduction Street art and graffiti are two different styles of urban art, and yet they still hold some of the same characteristics. After all, street art was born out of graffiti, and an article in Huffington Post described their relationship in the clearest way: "Graffiti was the template, the means, the method. Street art adopted all of this and pushed the boundaries of what outside art can be, going beyond anything achieved during the Golden Age of graffiti's early evolution " (McCarthy). In every city, there is evidence of graffiti and street art, both legal and illegal. Street art includes more "art–like" styles, with more imagery than just words. Because of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main two artists that will be looked at are Shepard Fairey and Blek le Rat. Although these two artists have very different styles of art, they are connected by the fact that they take inspirations from social or political dialogue. Fairey is a street artist located in New York, with a following comparable to Banksy. I chose him because he is from South Carolina, and he's also one of the most well known street artists. He has created his own brand based off of art he created in college, and this brand is very controversial in the street art community. The other artist I will be examining is Blek le Rat, who is known as the "father of stencil graffiti" (Walde, 42). Anyone who sees Le Rat's art immediately thinks of Banksy, as their styles are very similar. Banksy's art is based off of Le Rat's, and yet he is not as well known. For my own product, I will be analyzing these two artist's work, specifically Fairey's Obama Hope poster, and Le Rat's Homelessness series. These two pieces are more geared towards activism, which is the main idea of this project. For my own product, I will be creating two pieces, one based on a social issue, and one on a political issue. I've decided that I will be doing one piece on ovarian cancer, which has affected my aunt. The idea behind it is that it will show both my sister (who cut her hair for my aunt) ... • 9. Types Of Graffiti : A Positive Or Negative Way Ottilie Cooper–Ohm Mrs. McLaughlin Comp I October 20, 2015 Types of Graffiti Whether it's in a positive or negative way, it is clear that graffiti has a large impact on today's society. However, the majority of people have little to no knowledge about this emerging art form that surrounds them. Graffiti comes in a multitude of different styles and formats, from the quotes and numbers that constantly pop up inside bathroom stalls and on school desks to works of art that encompass entire buildings. This essay provides a concise overview of the prominent categories of graffiti: tags, stencil, wildstyle, blockbusters, heaven, and pieces. Tags Primarily first name based, tags are the most common type of graffiti. These are what you would typically see scribbled on train cars and bridges on your daily commute. Tags are typically done in a single color, and are quick enough to create that they can be made in a matter of seconds. They consist mainly of names or nicknames, or a short phrase. A good example of a tag was the American pop culture fad, known as "Kilroy was here", a simple drawing of a bald man with a prominent nose peering over a wall accompanied by the phrase Kilroy was here, which quickly became an amusing icon because of it's ability to pop up anywhere. 2. • 11. Banksy Conceptual Framework Essay BANKSY ARTIST Banksy is a pseudonymous England–based graffiti artist, political activist, film director, and painter. His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humor with graffiti done in a distinctive stenciling technique. Such artistic works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world. Known for his contempt for the government in labeling graffiti as vandalism, Banksy displays his art on public surfaces such as walls, even going as far as to build physical prop pieces. Sometimes that just means drawing a moustache on a girl's face on some billboard, sometimes that means sweating for days over an intricate drawing. Efficiency is the key. Stencils are traditionally hand drawn or printed onto sheets of acetate or card, before being cut out by hand. Because of the secretive nature of Banksy's work and identity, it is uncertain what techniques he uses to generate the images in his stencils, though it is assumed he uses computers for some images due to the photocopy nature of much of his work. He mentions in his book, Wall and Piece, that as he was starting to do graffiti, he was always too slow and was either caught or could never finish the art in one sitting. So he devised a series of intricate stencils to minimise time and overlapping of the colour. There is dispute in the street art world over the legitimacy of stencils, with many artists criticizing their use as "cheating." AUDIENCE Peter Gibson, a spokesman for Keep Britain Tidy, asserts that Banksy's work is simple vandalism, and Diane Shakespeare, an official for the same organization, was quoted as saying: "We are concerned that Banksy's street art glorifies what is essentially vandalism." In his column for The Guardian, satirist Charlie Brooker wrote of Banksy "...his work looks dazzlingly clever to idiots." He has also

  • 13. Street Art Essay Topics Street art is visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. The term gained popularity during the graffiti art boom of the early 1980s and continues to be applied to subsequent incarnations. Stencil graffiti, wheatpasted poster art or sticker art, and street installation or sculpture are common forms of modern street art. Video projection, yarn bombing and Lock On sculpture became popularized at the turn of the 21st century. The terms "urban art", "guerrilla art", "post–graffiti" and "neo–graffiti" are also sometimes used when referring to artwork created in these contexts. Traditional spray–painted graffiti artwork itself is often included in this category, excluding territorial graffiti or pure vandalism. Artists who choose the streets as their gallery are often doing so from a preference to communicate directly with the public at large, free from perceived confines of the formal art world. Street artists sometimes present socially relevant content infused with esthetic value, to attract attention to a cause or as a form of "art provocation". Common variants include adbusting, subvertising and other culture jamming, the abolishment of private property and reclaiming the streets. Some street artists use "smart vandalism" as a way to raise awareness of social and political issues. Other street artists simply see urban space as an untapped format for personal artwork, while others may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Street Art: The Accessibility Of Street Art One interesting thing about street art is that even with the negative connotations of illegal tagging and painting on public property, there's still a huge market for public art. However, some artists do not want to be paid because they think street art is supposed to be a more free way to create art, and being paid for it would be "selling out". While graffiti just used to be created in order to be known, both modern graffiti and street art has become a way for artists to break out of the conventional art world. The accessibility of street art often prompts artist to use it as a way to influence the viewer, and send a message. It differs from artist to artist what topic they want to convey, but the majority of artists do seem to use their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Banksy has essentially the exact same style and le Rat, almost to the point of ripping off le Rat's style entirely. It's very sad, because Banksy makes more money and is more well known than le Rat, and le Rat's pieces are often mistaken for Banksy's. Le Rat is of two minds on this topic. On the one hand, he only thinks that anything he says about Banksy will be taken out of context and he will be the one under fire (Battersby). However, he does think that Banksy helps to call attention to street art, saying "'It is important that people recognize what we do, and accept it for what it is," he states. "It is art. Urban artists are forced to write on public property because there is a lack of space assigned to us'" (Philby), which goes back to the idea of gallery space being both too restrictive and too selective for street artists. One of the more recent pieces Blek le Rat created was on the topic of homelessness. He made his signature black and white stencils of homeless people sitting and lying on the ground. The idea was to call attention to the homeless people living in cities that people see every day and disregard. It's an ironic subject, as the popularity of street art makes le Rat's art a hot topic, but homeless people are not a popular subject at all. "...people will walk directly over actual homeless people, but will stop to discuss a painting of a homeless person on a wall" (Stencil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His work usually comes with an anti–establishment or anti–war message. Rats, police, soldiers and the elderly are often included in his art. His first film Exit Through the Gift Shop received an Academy Award nomination in 2011. The 2014 Webby Awards honored him as person of the year. But who is the artist, activist, and filmmaker whose work led to "the Banksy effect?" And why is his work so sought after? Trained as a Butcher According to the book Home Sweet Home by author, graphic designer and friend Tristan Manco, Banksy was born in 1974 and grew up in Bristol, England. Manco also wrote that Banksy trained as a butcher but became involved in the Bristol underground scene during the late 1980s aerosol boom. The scene involved collaborations with musicians and artists. Banksy himself has said that his work was inspired by graffiti artist Robert Del Naja, also known as 3D and a founding member of the band Massive Attack. Art critics and observers have compared Banksy 's work to Blek le Rat, whose real name is Xavier Prou and who is known as the father of stencil graffiti.
