Non Farming Regulations
I have always lived on or around farms or some sort of agriculture. My family's heritage is made up
of small town American farmers who emigrated from Germany in the early to mid 1800s to start a
new life. The farm of my fourth great–grandparents is still being used today and it still plays an
important role in our agriculturally strong society. Certain regulations can hurt farmers all over the
country, enacting crippling problems and expenses on farms. Over the past three summers I have
worked on farms near my hometown. I have seen first hand how rules and regulations can affect a
farm and the production of products that farmers use to make a living. Some of the time, farmers

Introduction –
Cloughbane Farm Shop is run by Lorna Robinson, Sam Robinson and Robert & Richard Robinson,
Sam and Lorna's sons. The Robinsons have been farming at Cloughbane for around 150 years and is
now in its fourth generation. Up until 2002, it was, pure and simple, a farm, selling our beef, lamb
and free range eggs to wholesalers.
However in 2002 they were invited to be a founding member of the farm market set up in
Dungannon. At the market they sold their lamb and beef which they reared at the farm. They would
leave their lamb mature for 10–14 days on the bone and this was because they believed this gives it
a better taste. Their beef is left to mature for 28 days and this is to make it tender and also to gives it
a better taste.
Thanks to the setup of the Dungannon farm market they decided to start their own business selling
their goods at their own farm in a shop. They converted and old pig house in a shop which features
12–foot butchery serve over counter, three other chill cabinets for their own and other locally
sourced products. They also stocked fruit and vegetables plus some ambient lines.
This year Cloughbane farm shop was nominated for 2 awards at the Grow Make Eat Drink 2016
Awards. One of the awards they were nominated for was Best Small Food / Drink Producer and the
other award was Best Food / Drink Marketing Campaign.

cows and 700 acres. Spring Walk Farm, the name of which comes from the land and the spring by
which they would have to walk to get to the barn, was established just north of Nashville in the late
1800s by William Wachtel. It 's now run by the father–son team of Bill and Kurt, who inherited it
from William 's son and Bill 's father, Floyd. Floyd was born in 1918 to William and Lena, who

The Pros And Cons Of Family Farming
How important is farming? Farming is only one of the most influential industries in America. With
that being said, why has modern farming become one of the most unprofitable and family
disorientated professions: don't people enjoy clothing, bacon, ice cream, corn? We can all come to
the conclusion that we enjoy these products and appreciate the hard–working people who provide
them, so why is the government trying to replace family farms with large industrial farms? The
ideology of "bigger is better" always seems to produce a positive outcome, although does it apply to
the appraisal of farming, or does it neglect it. Recently in America, there has been a decrease in
family farming; according to article "The Disappearing Family Farm", since the 1930's there are
roughly 5 Million fewer family farms in America, and out of the 2 million remaining, only 565,000
are family operated. (USDA, 2017). The drastic decrease in family farming has begun to ignite
questions and debate within the American population; why this trend is occurring. The first official
reason is the new laws implemented by our government have made it insufficiently harder to build a

The Pros And Cons Of Animal Welfare
Did you know that 56 billion animals are slaughtered each year? People believe that farmers are
abusing and causing stress on the animals. Farmers use confined feeding operations to maximize the
production. By having the confined feeding operations, it gives the animals no room to graze. When
they can't graze, it restricts the animal to move or to exercise ("On The Farm"). The animals are not
given any pain relief during certain practices like castration or dehorning. Animal welfare is not
needed in the farming aspect, because the animals are meant for food. In the 1970's, animal welfarist
got together and tried to sue farmers for being cruel and harming animals. The government created
the right to farm laws. That law protected farmers rights when farming. Twelve states banned certain
farm practices because they were believed to be inhumane. Those bans include, gestation crates for
sows, veal crates for calves, and battery cages for chickens. All those states that banned the practices
were small in the ag field. The farmers are saying that they are not hurting animals, they are
protecting them. People that live in cities or that don't experience the farm work will say it is
inhumane. Farmers are trying to make changes to stop these regulations. State Farm Bureaus are
trying backing up the farmers. The regulations could ruin the agricultural business (Fifield). Farmers
use the most efficient methods which lower the prices for the consumer. The other people would say
that the most efficient way goes against the animal's welfare. When using the high welfare methods
it raises the price of eggs by 18% which is about 49 cents per dozen. Walmart and McDonalds will
be using only cage free eggs by 2025. That will increase the price of the eggs. They cages and crates
are said to be safe and sanitary ways for egg production. Makes the price of food increase because
the farmer can't have as many animals because it requires too much space to be humane (Fifield).
Gestation crates are the safest way for a sow to give birth. Gestation crates are inhumane for the
sows. They can only stand or lie down. And they are in the crate for up to 4 months without

seen barns that have not been run properly to know how important a good barn manager is. The barn

The Industrial Revolution In The Grapes Of Wrath
The Industrial Revolution may have changed the way America functioned all together, but not all of
that change was for the better. The book "The Grapes of Wrath" is a great example of the negative
toll that industrialization took on poor laborers. The main character, Tom Joad, describes all that is
happening around him after his return from McAlester state penitentiary. During this time the rising
of big industrial farms puts his family out of work. Throughout the story there is a sort of harmful
domino effect towards the skilled workers of this time. Initially, the fatalistic tumble of events
identified starts with the advancing of the industrial revolution. According to chapter five, paragraph
forty–one of "The Grapes of Wrath" it states, "Snub–nosed monsters, raising the dust and sticking
their snouts into it, straight down the country, across the country, through fences, through dooryards,
in and out of gullies in straight lines." Tom is referring to the tractor that he sees plowing the field he
once tended to and loved. He uses the same word when he describes or speaks of the bank. A
monster is defined as somethings terrifying and harmful, certainly never anything that is considered
good or kind. His descriptions obviously give a very negative connotation considering he refers to
them as a monster. Henceforth, Tom's opposing tone is towards the banks and the bonanza farms
that slowly put more and more hardworking, small town farmers out of work. According to chapter
twenty–one, paragraph ten from "The Grapes of Wrath" it states, "And the roads were crowded with
men ravenous for work, murderous for work." It started with the increasing industrialization that
then lead to mass unemployment of skilled laborers in particular. This is due to the fact that
production began demanding anyone who could operate a simple machine when in the past products
were made completely by hand. This angers and saddens Tom because for years he worked hard to
provide for his family, now any dope who can push a few buttons is taking over the farm that he

farmland for production, the farmers who grow the goods do not have a voice in the company's
decisions and the way the goods produced are treated. Farmers who own their land have the voice to

When you think about farming what comes to mind? Do you think about older gentlemen on
tractors, or young boys helping there father feed the family herd. Maybe you even think about
thousands of acres of corn land in Iowa. Whatever it is I can assure you farming is the nation's most
important and noblest profession. Today farming is seen as a dangerous profession, that's not
necessarily the case, it is true that many people are injured and even killed on farms each year. In
2012 alone three hundred and seventy–four farmers and farm workers lost there lives due to work
related injuries, and every day a staggering one hundred and sixty–seven agriculture workers suffer
a work related injury (CDC 2012). But why so many? The simple answer is that when it comes to
farm safety many people are ignorant. I myself am guilty of not using the proper safety equipment
or even removing a safety shield to make things run more efficient. I think we have it hardwired in
our brains that bad things only happen to other people, and nothing bad could happen to ourselves,
that's not the case. I think that if farmers will take the time to slow down and be more careful and
think things through we will cut down drastically on injuries. If you think about it many farmers are
constantly stressed, they simply don't have enough hours in the day to accomplish all the tasks at

Farmers use confined feeding operations to maximize the production. By having the confined feeding operations, it gives the animals no room to graze. Those bans include, gestation crates for sows, veal crates for calves, and battery cages for chickens. All those states that banned the practices were small in the ag field. The farmers are saying that they are not hurting animals, they are protecting them. People that live in cities or that don't experience the farm work will say it is inhumane. Farmers use the most efficient methods which lower the prices for the consumer. The other people would say that the most efficient way goes against the animal's welfare.
