Rock And Roll, Segregation, And The British Invasion Of 1964
I watched a video from the 50th anniversary presentations. The video I watched was about Rock and Roll, Segregation, and The British Invasion of
1964. It was lectured by Dr. Christy Talbott, and she first talked about the pre rock and roll period. The term Rock and Roll came from a song from the
year 1938, that stated "My baby rock and rolls me all night." Rock and Roll or also known as American Rock, was changed completely after the
British Invasion came in 1964. The invasion turned Rock and Roll into what is known today as Rock, it made a change for the good. Musicians in
the pre Rock and Roll era, sang about current events similar as we do today. The events they sang about was Segregation, North Vs. South
inferiority and the wars that were happening at the time World War 2, Korean War and Vietnam War. THe artists of this time consisted of The
Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ritchie Valens and the most famous of them all Elvis Presley. Elvis Presley's music was called
"White man with an African American feel." In 1959 Motown records in Detroit, Michigan hired an all black group called "The Temptations." Their
song "My Girl" hit number one on the billboards in 1964. The man that hired them was Berry Gordy Jr. Berry Gordy Jr also hired all black women
groups as well, but unlike the all black male groups he dressed the women groups as white folk.

Spongebob Theme Song
In my childhood, I watched a lot of spongebob it was something we all watch at some point. I remember watching spongebob with my siblings in
the living room of my house and laughing with them. I used to play with them and have fun with them all day everyday at that time playing tag or
hide and seek. A song i could link to this memory is the spongebob theme song because you can say it the only thing me and my siblings ever heard
during that time. As i was in elementary school i got to know a person that i would call a best friend, someone i could talk to. When i was in
elementary school a kid moved in my neighborhood and was my next door neighbor. My parent found out they had a kid my age and they said i
should go visit. I visited and went to her room and the gummy bear song was playing. We both became best friends practically the same day we met.
We both liked the same things. I linked the gummy bear song to this memory because it was the song that was on when we met and became best
friends. As i got into middle me and my family started to travel more and see new places. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

mountains with some nice smooth looking snow on them. The song i would link to this is the song "Come On, Let's Go" by Ritchie Valens because

La Bamba Music Analysis
The artist that I have chosen is Richie Valens. The genre in which the artist is mostly categorized in is Rock & Roll. The reason why this artist
should be represented more into this course is because not only did he make such an impact in the music industry within two years even though he
died when he was 17 due to a plane crash. Furthermore he only released two albums. With only two albums alone he influenced many artist for
example like of Los Lobos, Los Lonely Boys and Carlos Santana. He is considered the first Latino to successfully cross over into mainstream rock.(

to California, US. John was absoultly devasted as he planned this walkabout for months only to be sent back home. While about halfway to the US
the plane went off course and the pilot was forced to crash into a strange island where John found himself on the floor of the beach with panic from
the other survivors. He looked at his foot and to his amazement he was able to move his half–paralyzed body. This experience that John lead him to

Rock N Roll Changed Music
Rock n Roll was everything the suburban 1950's were not. While parents of the decade were listening to Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and the Big
Bands. Their children were moving on to a new beat." (U.S. History) Teenagers started to like this new type of music called rock and roll. It became
very popular and artists started to experiment with it which influenced the development of rock n roll throughout the 50's and 60's. The
experimentation with rock n roll changed music forever and greatly influenced our music today. Rock n roll was mixed with country, rhythm, and
blues when this combination happened rock n roll kept developing through the fifties and sixties. Rock n roll came from the mix of country and
rhythm and blues. The origins of rock n roll can be traced back to when the great migration brought African Americans to the U.S. with them they
brought a different sound for music. After the great migration, new genres of music began to become very popular in the late 1920's and 1930's.
These genres of music influenced the development of rock n roll such as blues, boogie–woogie, jump blues, jazz, and gospel music "Rock n Roll
developed from blues and country so no one invented rock n roll" ( Tim Janis) Rock n roll was definitely influenced by African American roots. The
African music tradition of storytelling using music of African origins was a big influence on the creation of blues and other genres. These genres of
music soon developed into rhythm and blues. Later

Well That Ll Be The Day Ay Play Analysis
"Well, That'll be the Day ay ay... when I Die." These very lyrics came from the play: The Buddy Holly Story by, Alan Janes. This Play can be
featured at the wonderful Grand Theater right here in London Ontario, Canada. Overall, the play was mediocre. Many parts of the musical were well
planned out but, there was way too many songs. Therefore, making it a struggle to stay engaged to the play. Not only that, the play's conclusion was
not so satisfying. Instead of ending a different way the play just ended after Buddy sadly passed away.
In the plot, Buddy starts in the music business as the lead singer for a Country & Western band, The Crickets at age 19. But his heart wanted Rock and
Roll. After many hit songs and getting married to the love of his life after 5 hours, the band quickly drifts apart and Buddy turns into a solo artist.
Tragically reaching his death in an airplane accident on his way to a concert during his tour with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. But he will
never be forgotten he will alway be known as a Rock and Roll legend and truly an inspirational figure.
Next, the acting. Opposed to the play overall the acting was actually really satisfying. I enjoyed it because it matched the play everything was on

matched the characters personality which also suited the time period really well. For example: Buddy Holly's big thick glasses. Not only did Buddy

Analysis Of The Song ' American Pie '
Bye, Bye,
When my brother and I were younger our dad used to play his records for us. The record player was an ugly plastic box, situated in the corner of our
then unfinished basement. More than anything else, I remember him playing the song "American Pie"by Don McLean. To this day I can still sing the
majority of the lyrics of the eight and a half minute song from memory. According to my brother, we were the ones repeatedly asking my dad to play
it, but in my memory, it was always my dad just playing it for us unprompted.
Something in the song awoke an exuberance in my brother, Spencer and I. We would jump and dance on the couch during the fast parts, and sway and
spin during the slow. The lyrics were exciting, but also really tragic.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are parts of American history that are shameful, tragic. The event that sparked the writing of this song is one of those tragic moments. There are
many parts of American history that I can't be proud of. We have done, and continue to do terrible acts. "American Pie" acknowledges the sadness of a
terrible event, and I think that is important. We are too quick to forget bad events and actions. Many Americans believe that the past was somehow
better than the present. We can't return to our former glory if we never really had it in the first place.
On the other hand, a big part of "American Pie" for me is the nostalgia. I have good memories attached to the song. American could be better, but
on a more personal level I love my home. I love my family and friends I and here with. I am not personally patriotic in the original definition of the
word. I don't love my country because it is good, I love it because of the people here that I know to be good.
I confess, there are parts of this song I still don't understand. I still don't quite get the meaning behind the chorus, or if it has a meaning beyond what is
actually written. What the deeper meanings of several of the verses still eludes me too. The stories that it tells (that I mentioned earlier) are part of
what characterizes "American Pie" as the American Dream for me.
I am a storyteller at heart, I think. This song, more than almost any other for me, made me imagine. Perhaps the writer's meaning

Rock Music : The Impact Of Music And Its Impact On Music
Rock is a music genre which is "a form of popular music that evolved from rock and roll and pop music during the mid– and late 1960s" (Dictionary).
When it was introduced, it gained a "generation of youth that was much larger than any in recent memory" (America Rocks and Rolls).
Throughout the ages, it has been increasing in popularity within society, to the point where it has different types of music based on this genre. As
technology started to progress, so did rock, having it become a major part in some cultures. As a result, it became one of the few genres that had
multiple sub genres. Rock music has affected history drastically, influenced by technology, and it impacted society. Rock, which originated in the
United States in the late 1940's and the early 1950's, was able to affect history from the start of the new era of the 1950's. In the year of 1953, the
world had experienced the new genre of music with Bill Haley and His Comets as the first band to create "a true rock and roll song, taking their
single 'Crazy Man Crazy'" (Rockmusictimeline.com). This was the first rock song ever made and it was able to reached the number 12 in the pop
charts. Until the year of 1955, when rock became much more popular, that it had gained the "first nationwide #1 hit when Bill Haley's 'Rock Around
The Clock' tops the Pop Charts" (Rockmusictimeline.com). As time went on in the 1950's, rock had gained popularity with more artists that were part
of the genre. Such artist were:

Essay An Analysis of “American Pie”
American Pie" is an impressionistic ballad by Don Mclean which features unique and intriguing lyrics. It has imaginative changes in tempo, vocal
delivery and instrumentation, and imparts a wide range of emotions ranging from pure joy, to melancholy and despair. The song takes the listener on an
autobiographical journey through the turbulent 1960's with references to the events that shaped the era. Don Mclean was enshrined in the Songwriters'
Hall of Fame in 2004 for his work on "American Pie" (Don McLean: Songwriters Hall of Fame Inauguration). With its use of formal structure,

Although the formal structure of this song is quite good, perhaps the use of allusion is one of the most important poetic devices found in "American
Pie". An allusion is a reference to a famous person, place or thing. In the first verse Mclean writes "But February made me shiver with ever paper I'd
deliver". This allusion refers to the plane crash on February 3, 1959 that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens andthe Big Bopper, J.P. Richardson.
Another famous allusion in this song is found in the fifth verse, Mclean makes a reference to the holy trinity, he writes, "And the three men I admired
the most: The father, son, and the Holy Ghost, they caught the last train to the coast, the day the music died". This allusion is particularly brilliant on
the part of Don Mclean, because it allows each individual person to use their imagination in order to interpret his allusion. This allusion has multiple
meanings, for an example if one analysis this allusion in the context of music, Mclean was obviously referring once again to the death of Buddy
Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper, J. P. Richardson. However one could also analyze this allusion in the context of the political leaders of the
1960's and thinks that Mclean was alluding to the deaths of President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Robert Kennedy.
In addition to formal structure and allusions Don Mclean uses Figurative language, such as metaphors,

became fond of a young girl named Donna. Donna was from a middle class white family, while Ritchie was from a poor Latino American family.
Donna's parents wanted to keep the two apart from each other as her father did not approve of the romance because Ritchie had nothing to offer his
daughter. Ritchie had nothing to offer Donna but his music and hope of someday making a name for himself. One–day Ritchie and his band mates are
having a show and a man by the name of Bob Keane stops by to see the performance, while there Keane shows a great interest in Ritchie and reaches

How Did Buddy Holly Influence Rock And Roll Music
During the late 1950s, Buddy Holly, one of the most influential rock'n'roll artists, was killed in a fatal plane crash. He was an American singer and
songwriter who produced some of the most distinctive and influential work in rock music. The songs he co–wrote and performed with his backing band
the Crickets remain as fresh and potent today as when recorded on primitive equipment in New Mexico half a century ago: That'll Be The Day,
Peggy Sue, Oh Boy, Not Fade Away. His influence on the development of pop music was incalculable, particularly in the UK. Peculiarly, Holly and his

The Song American Pie Is A Representation Of Loss During...
The song American Pie is a representation of loss during the transition into the 1970s. It was written in 1971 by Don McLean and filled with his
views on the state of society, political changes, and cultural changes. The cultural changes and the loss of everything society knew produced the lost
generation that McLean was apart of. He demonstrated his disapproval of the direction of the country by using music, faith, and war as examples of
the changes and loss his generation faced.
Music heavily influences and creates a voice for the people of the time period it is written in and also reflects the tone of the time period. Mclean's
generation was impacted greatly by classic rock and roll artists, such as Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. Music direction and message portrayed the
prosperous nature of the 1950s and what life was like before the 1970s. The change in music direction rooted from a tragedy that Mclean recognized
with the verse, "But February made me shiver". In February 3, 1959 Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valensand J.P. Richardson died in a plane crash. Theses
musicians were Mclean's heroes and rock and roll legends. McLean considered this to be "the day the music died". After their deaths, music
drastically changed. New musicians and styles of music came into play. Buddy Holly and the other musicians before the Vietnam war sang uplifting
songs or songs with religious references. The verse "A long long time ago," is referring to the time period of rock and roll and a

Rock and Roll
Developed from country, gospel, jazz and blues music, rock and roll became popularized in the early 1950s. Because of the economic boom, people
gained more free time, and teenagers didn't have to work to contribute money to their family's wealth. The youth began listening to this style of music
in their freetime, as perhaps a show of rebellion, as the previous generation generally disliked the strong rhythms in rock and roll. Artists like Elvis
Presley and Fats Domino helped spread rock and roll to the younger generation (Vaillancourt).

Throughout her career, she overcame racial discrimination and sexism, as she was a black female artist ("Biography").
Rhythm & Blues (R&B)
Although R&B music had been around the 1940s, the music became widely popular and commercialized in the 1950s. This style of music
contributed to the birth of rock & roll in the 1950's as well. R&B had many African American artists, as the style of music came from African
American communities. However, it's important to note that when white people rerecorded original R&B by black people, it was more popular. R&B
inspired black musicians, and is still dominated by black artists today ("Regional R&B Radio in the 1950s – The World Before Rock and Roll

Fender and Squier both use tremolo style bridges. The difference is that Squier produces guitars in China. They use a type of metal referred as "pop
metal." The Chinese collect recycled soda cans and melt it along with a bit of zinc and steel to make it stronger. They cast a mold of the bridge and
mass–produce the bridge. With Fender, the tremolo bridge is made out of steel and heavy machinery forms the bridge. The tuning machines on the
head of the guitar are also same but very different. With Fender, the rotation ratio is 1:18, which is highly accurate and tunes as it turns. For
Squier, the ratio changes to 1:10, which makes it harder to tune because of the more rotations. Most importantly, the pickups of the guitars are very
different. Guitar pickups are a device that picks up vibrations from steel or nickel strings using magnets and wounded copper wire. This creates a
magnetic field and when the strings move they disturbs the field and changes the current passing through the coils of copper wire. This current is
then flows out the output and amplified with an amplifier (2015). With Fender's pickups, they use Alnico slug magnets and pure copper with their
coils. These pickups have a nice, clear, and pure tone and sound to them. Squier does not do the same. They use "pop" metal slugs and copper with
zinc and other conductive metals and glue a magnet at the bottom of the pickup and it works the same. This will also give you a clear tone but it is
not so pure sound. They essentially do the same job but it is cheaper. Also time is a main factor to this. It takes less time to make an Squier
Stratocaster than it is to make a Fender Stratocaster. This means it is easier to get an Squier and cost

American Pie
With every aspect of our lives we are making a point, arguing a belief, or refuting some other aspect of our existence. Aesthetic pieces, most avidly
poems and songs, argue a message both in the lyrics and in the meaning posed between the lines. "American Pie," in a multitude of ways, argues that
American lives and memories are closely intertwined with the music of the time period. Not only does "American Pie" argue a message it also pulls
many generations together. Today, thirty years after the initial release, "American Pie" still has an effect in our music and continues to be popular with
all age groups. Don McLean accomplishes this task through using the context of the time period, placement of words, the words ... Show more content

Essentially, the late 1960s and early 1970s are an in between stage for America, where people were exploring the many options in their lives. The
release of "American Pie" in 1971 was a landmark in pop music history because the song was eight minutes and thirty–two seconds long. Later, it was
divided up into two parts and then turned into the version that is known today (www.don–mclean.com). Now that the time period that surrounded the
release of "American Pie" is established it is easier to understand the song because it can be read more in context.
The music of "American Pie" harkens back to a time of rock–n–roll, pianos, and acoustic guitars. A time when the music was upbeat and peppy,
causing you to want to jump up and dance. However, the music during the time of its creation lacks the calming effect that is acquainted with the music
of previous eras. "American Pie" embodies many qualities of the music during the 1950s, including the simplicity of the chord structures overall, the
clear vocals, and well–known and used instruments. With the use of simple but repetitive chords, Don McLean is able to shift the attention from the
musical facet of the song back to the lyrics and the individual person listening to it.
At the opening of "American Pie," Don McLean starts the song at a slow pace but then progressively speeds up the pace through the first chorus. After
the first chorus the music

Is It No Longer Relevant? Humans?
Popular academic writing's claim that evolution is no longer relevant to humans because we have become so dependent on aspects of society such
as technology and culture, that cultural adaptation has replaced biological adaptation (Dyson, 2007; Ward, 2001). Typically claimed, this means
today, society plays an important role in compelling the further development of our species. However, times are considerably different now than how
they were a while ago. Today, the average person's exposure to environmental pressures is totaled up to stairs in need of baby proofing,
environmental toxins, and microorganisms. For some of us, even with knowledgeable insight into the harshly unforgiving conditions that were
mitigated throughout the millenniums, such a disparity in lifestyles is difficult to comprehend; To imagine uneasiness sparked by the state of
hunger, the persistent beckoning of death at every hunt for satiation, or the one and only permissible goal of life simply to prolong it for another
couple of hours is far from our reach. At least, such a cavity in comprehension is accurate for those of us that operate in the most illuminated parts of
society. Those who do not, function in what is today 's most plausible peril, dysfunction. Traditionally we tend to focus on the negative facets of
dysfunction which is why most people 's perspective of it is generally deleterious (Devine, K. A. et al, 2016). In truth, anyone who has gazed upon it,

The History Of 1960s Music In The 1960s
Music in 1960s
Music has been a part of the human race for as long as it has been existing. Its various forms and genres categorizes and divides the music country
wise, ranging from initially Folk music as the base, moving on to Country music as a regions identity. The music gained enormous name and fame
because of its hypnotizing effect on the singer and the listener. From Rock n Roll, evolving towards British invasion, music in 1960's played a major
role in evolution of UK.This evolution was brought up by the introduction of rock and roll, collaborating different races and changing the lifestyle thus
transforming UK from a conservative country into the capital of the world.
Before rock and roll hit the Great Britain, blues and jazz were the genres of the era. Singers from various nations like the US or Africa, started
working solo or as bands and increased the impact of music on people'slive. Before the 50's, various controversies arose regarding the style of Jazz
and Blues, and their effect on the local residents and "The "British Invasion" also began around 1963 with the arrival of The Beatles on the music scene
and the type of rabid fandom that followed them would change the way people would view and interact with me and musicians forever."(The People
History). Although rock and roll began influencing Britain in the 1950s, it wasn't until the early Sixties and the emergence of 'British Invasion' groups
like The Beatles, that music truly began its revolutionary changes

Analyzing Don Mclean's Song 'American Pie'
Frank Rambala
English IV H
Rough Draft
American Pie
Music is a form of literature that can be used as an instrument to express an artist's feelings through their lyrics about a particular situation or topic. In
the song "American Pie", Don McLean expresses his feelings on how the generation is changing and how the influence of music will "die" because
of a tragic event. The wordage and tone of McLean's lyrics are written in a negative manner but represented in a positive and upbeat song. Don
McLean's song, "American Pie", reveals three significant feelings, which include death, fear of change, and his devout faith.
The main theme that is notable in Don McLean's song is death. Written in 1971,"American Pie" reflects upon the events that occurred ... Show more

Living through the sixties, McLean was able to express what he witnessed and how he felt. Death was one of his major themes in his song. The
deaths of three famous singers was a major let down in the music world. It raised many questions as to who was going to take over the spotlight, and
how music will forever change. Change also played a significant role in McLean's song. Society at the time was going through many changes that
would form the United States into what it is today. Dealing with the many notable deaths and the many changes going on in society, the people
seemed to have too much to handle and ultimately the breakdown of society began. McLean who was also dealing with the struggles of the 60's was
able to find a safe haven with God. He used his strong faith to overcome the struggles. Overall Don McLean put a lot of time and effort into his song
"American Pie". He took the time and put together meaningful lyrics that became one of the most famous songs in history. Works Cited

Essay 3
The song "American Pie', by Don McLean, was a dominate rock–and–roll hit in 1971. McLean illustrates famous rock star artist and songwriter Buddy
Holly, who died in a plane crash in 1962 by using rhetorical strategies. The different potential interpretations of this song made it one of the most
controversial songs from the 1970's. McLean was hitting home with many emotional resonances defining moments in the recent American experiences.
"American Pie" starts out addressing McLean love for music in the 50's. During the 50's, music was a tool for getting people off their feet and on to
the dance floors. "And I knew if I had my chance, that I could make those people dance, and maybe they'd be happy for a while" (McLean). This
verse symbolizes why he loves to create and perform for his fans. McLean then goes on to mention his mentor Buddy Holly. "But February made me
shiver. With every paper, I'd deliver. Shocking news on the doorstep, I couldn't take one more step. I can't remember if I cried. When I read about
his widowed bride. But something touched me deep inside. The day the music died" (McLean). Buddy Holly died on February 3, 1959, in a plane
crash. There are two theories on why the song was called "American Pie." It was rumored, "American Pie" was the name of the plane that took
Buddy Holly life. Also, someone refers it to a symbol of the beauty queen Miss America (Morgan). Mclean remembered the paper boy delivering
the morning paper and there on the front page, was the story of the death of Buddy Holly. At the time Holly's wife was pregnant and soon had a
miscarriage afterward. McLean, he says he can't remember if he cried in the moment or not. All this was in the first few verses in "American Pie."
McLean incorporated these lines of imagery to help the listener picture his past emotional experiences. I believe McLean wanted to paint a picture for
his audience could relate to. During these times it was tough for McLean. Not only did Buddy Holly die but also rock star legends Richie Valens, and
the Big Bopper. For McLean music died for him and the rest of the world.
"American Pie" not only pays tribute to three talented musicians but also

Don Mclean Pie Literary Devices
'American Pie' was written in 1971 and topped the music charts in 1972. Don Mclean wrote it partly as a biography and partly as the story of the
evolving America through the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's. Don Mclean wrote the song to tell a story about his generation and how it had and continued
to change since he was younger. It took Mclean over ten years of work and with the combination of many ideas American Pie was born. In American
Pie by Don Mclean, he shows America's lost innocence in the song after the 1950's through symbolism, allusion, and denotation. The first of the two
most abundant literary devices is symbolism. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent and idea or quality. The first example of symbolism... Show

Miss American pie is a symbol for the 'American Dream', he is saying bye to that idea of the American dream, of the idea of domesticity of the
1950's.Mclean delves much deeper into this change of society and loss of the original American dream, to much more specific details. In the first
verse the line "With a pink carnation and a pickup truck/ but I knew I was out of luck" in the line we see that what has worked in the past will no
longer suffice. Times are changing and the expectation of romance has changed along with society. The simplicity of a flower and a cool car, or
truck in this case, is not enough, romance is different now since the 1950's are over. Not only is romance different but now the music is starting to
change as well. In verse two the line "And moss grown at on a rolling stone/ but that's not how it used to be", has multiple symbols in it. First this is
a symbol of Bob Dylan's change in musical style. Bob Dylan wrote 'Like a Rolling Stone' this song is his first major shift away from folk music.
After he wrote the song Dylan was involved in a motorcycle accident and he basically hid out in his house for about a year. The 'fat moss' symbolizes

Big Joe Turner's 'Miss Rhythm Speaks Out'
Under the guidelines for covers Ruth Brown established in her article, "'Miss Rhythm' Speaks Out", the cover version of "Shake Rattle and Roll"
from Billy Haley and the Comets would be considered legitimate. Due to the racial hardships of the time period, you can say that Big Joe Turner
didn't receive the credit or attention he deserved for the originality of his version, and Billy Haley is indebted to him for that, but Haley's version is
just as valid under her guidelines. Ruth Brown wouldn't view Haley's version as a "bare–faced duplicate" with "no artistic merit whatsoever" because it
isn't exactly "note for note" Turner's version (Ruth Brown, p. 12). Haley's version moves at a much faster tempo and rhythm. It's pace also is much

Cover songs were more a measure of the racial differences in the United States. Back then, many covers signified racial segregation. Like Ruth Brown
says, many African American artists accepted the fact that white American artists were going to take their original piece and make it their own. Today,
this would be a major issue and verge on the issue of copyright infringement. However, back then, perhaps it had a positive impact on both the white
and black artists– white artists get to have success on the performance they create while African American artists gained the extra exposure their
song needed at the time to get popular. While many of us today may not agree with this concept, American society and the industry would have
only properly functioned like this. Many times like in the case of "Shake Rattle and Roll", the covers aren't close to the original piece. Therefore,
both the originals and the covers were equally different versions of the same thing, so both artists deserved credit. However, in the case of songs
like "A Little Bird Told Me" by Paula Watson and the cover by Evelyn Knight, both versions were the same song note for note. And even though this
was considered "fair" game at the time, it was truly unfair of Knight to use Watson's exact material, and the cover song should have not been
successful or even released. Racial inequality defined this era in

How Did Buddy Holly Influence The 1950's
Charles Hardin Holley, also known as Buddy Holly, was one of the most significant and influential rock 'n' roll icons of the 1950's even though he
only ever had one chart topping single. Holly's musical legend was one of many firsts: First rock 'n' roll performer to insist on artistic control over his
material and to write/arrange his own songs and supervise his studio sessions. First to master the technical parts of recording including echo,
double–tracking and overdubbing (he recorded his own voice and guitar playing). First to add classical stringed instruments in rock music. First to
ditch the "pretty boy" looks of most 1950's performers for a more intelligent, slightly geeky look, and the first rock musician to attract not only a
female, but also a male audience.
Singing Style
Holly had a unique singing style which featured stretched syllables and high energy. He broke the typical rock practice by singing ballads with a

Chicanos and the Liberal Agenda In the early sixties, when times were of segregation, racism and discrimination, Chicanos often suffered the most. It
was a dark time for Mexican–Americans, who were negatively referred as 'Chicanos'. Chicanos did not always have the empowered meaning it has
today. In the early sixties, 'Chicano' was often used to refer to Mexican–Americans' as lower class, ignorant and as a derogatory racial identification.
Furthermore, racism, exploitation, inequality, conformity and assimilation were all main factors of the early sixties liberal agenda. Chicanos often
faced numerous struggles as Mexican–Americans were often exploited profoundly in the workplace. Along with being exploited, Chicanos often face
new threats like being fired, pay cuts, and ultimately deportation due racism. Anglo societies were advanced due to the inequalities Chicanos faced

American Pie Summary
Don McLean wrote American Pie to make people cognizant of the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P Richardson. Through
metaphors and allegories, he tries to explain that the death of these musicians was a sad and almost unholy event that he was grieving severely about.
In it though he also references things that other musicians did in their lifetimes. In the stanza "We all got up to dance/ Oh, but we never got the
chance/ 'Cause the players tried to take the field/ The marching band refused to yield," it in its entirety is an allegory for how the Beatles were trying to
make music that you would listen to, but not dance to, and then started writing anti–violence songs against the Vietnam protesters, that made some of

Essay On Rock And Roll
We all know of rock and roll; ACDC, The Beatles, Duffy. The absolute rockstars, literally, of rock. But do we know anything before, or after the
golden ages? Do we understand what has happened to rock and why it is so valuable today? Who started rock and roll? Well, that's easy. Chuck
Berry introduced something never heard before, the song named "Maybellene". Chuck decided to have a nice electric guitar solo, as well as
comforting tones that ran over the music with a small valve amplifier. Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Little Richard were major pioneers in this area
of music. They coaxed Rockabilly to become a thing. This all happened in the 1950s. Thank you, Elvis! Moving into the 1950s. The solid–body guitar
was introduced (and sold) in this time period. This was the ultimate sprout of rock and roll. R&B, Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Boogie, you name it, Rock and
Roll most likely had it. In 1953, Bill Haley and the Comets song "Crazy Man Crazy" hit #12 on the charts. At this point, African American rock artists
were extremely popular, and making it to the top. The Orioles made it to the top as well with "Crying in the Chapel". Many mothers did not want their

As disco and light rock fell out of the ordinary, hard rock and pop were picking up more and more revenue by the day. During 1981, the band Tears
for Fears was created and began showing the world bigger and better ways of producing music. With their hit, "Everybody Wants to Rule the
World," musicians started using more drums and more bass guitar to hit more crucial and emotional parts of the song. Tears for Fears were not the
only ones changing music in the 80s, though. Metallica, Michael Jackson, Asia, Prince, Madonna, and the Rolling Stones became huge hits during
the 1980s. Each with their own songs, and own ways of giving a message. Guns N' Roses was a game changer for music with their heavy guitar solos,

Rock And Roll, Segregation, And The British Invasion Of 1964

  • 1. Rock And Roll, Segregation, And The British Invasion Of 1964 I watched a video from the 50th anniversary presentations. The video I watched was about Rock and Roll, Segregation, and The British Invasion of 1964. It was lectured by Dr. Christy Talbott, and she first talked about the pre rock and roll period. The term Rock and Roll came from a song from the year 1938, that stated "My baby rock and rolls me all night." Rock and Roll or also known as American Rock, was changed completely after the British Invasion came in 1964. The invasion turned Rock and Roll into what is known today as Rock, it made a change for the good. Musicians in the pre Rock and Roll era, sang about current events similar as we do today. The events they sang about was Segregation, North Vs. South inferiority and the wars that were happening at the time World War 2, Korean War and Vietnam War. THe artists of this time consisted of The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ritchie Valens and the most famous of them all Elvis Presley. Elvis Presley's music was called "White man with an African American feel." In 1959 Motown records in Detroit, Michigan hired an all black group called "The Temptations." Their song "My Girl" hit number one on the billboards in 1964. The man that hired them was Berry Gordy Jr. Berry Gordy Jr also hired all black women groups as well, but unlike the all black male groups he dressed the women groups as white folk. ... • 2. Spongebob Theme Song In my childhood, I watched a lot of spongebob it was something we all watch at some point. I remember watching spongebob with my siblings in the living room of my house and laughing with them. I used to play with them and have fun with them all day everyday at that time playing tag or hide and seek. A song i could link to this memory is the spongebob theme song because you can say it the only thing me and my siblings ever heard during that time. As i was in elementary school i got to know a person that i would call a best friend, someone i could talk to. When i was in elementary school a kid moved in my neighborhood and was my next door neighbor. My parent found out they had a kid my age and they said i should go visit. I visited and went to her room and the gummy bear song was playing. We both became best friends practically the same day we met. We both liked the same things. I linked the gummy bear song to this memory because it was the song that was on when we met and became best friends. As i got into middle me and my family started to travel more and see new places. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The song i would link to this is the song "Come On, Let's Go" by Ritchie Valens because it was something i remembered hearing on the radio while we were driving there so i guess it just stuck. The reason why this artist should be represented more into this course is because not only did he make such an impact in the music industry within two years even though he died when he was 17 due to a plane crash. Furthermore he only released two albums. With only two albums alone he influenced many artist for example like of Los Lobos, Los Lonely Boys and Carlos Santana. He is considered the first Latino to successfully cross over into mainstream rock.( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ritchie_Valens) The song in which that I have pick is La Bamba. John Locke's Statement On The Walkabout By John Locke After John Locke was denied admission on the walkabout because of his paraplegic state; he was put on a flight back home from Sydney, Australia to California, US. While about halfway to the US the plane went off course and the pilot was forced to crash into a strange island where John found himself on the floor of the beach with panic from the other survivors. Their children were moving on to a new beat." (U.S. History) Teenagers started to like this new type of music called rock and roll. • 7. Well That Ll Be The Day Ay Play Analysis "Well, That'll be the Day ay ay... when I Die." These very lyrics came from the play: The Buddy Holly Story by, Alan Janes. This Play can be featured at the wonderful Grand Theater right here in London Ontario, Canada. Overall, the play was mediocre. Many parts of the musical were well planned out but, there was way too many songs. Therefore, making it a struggle to stay engaged to the play. Not only that, the play's conclusion was not so satisfying. Instead of ending a different way the play just ended after Buddy sadly passed away. In the plot, Buddy starts in the music business as the lead singer for a Country & Western band, The Crickets at age 19. But his heart wanted Rock and Roll. After many hit songs and getting married to the love of his life after 5 hours, the band quickly drifts apart and Buddy turns into a solo artist. Tragically reaching his death in an airplane accident on his way to a concert during his tour with the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens. But he will never be forgotten he will alway be known as a Rock and Roll legend and truly an inspirational figure. Next, the acting. • 10. Analysis Of The Song ' American Pie ' Bye, Bye, When my brother and I were younger our dad used to play his records for us. The record player was an ugly plastic box, situated in the corner of our then unfinished basement. More than anything else, I remember him playing the song "American Pie"by Don McLean. To this day I can still sing the majority of the lyrics of the eight and a half minute song from memory. According to my brother, we were the ones repeatedly asking my dad to play it, but in my memory, it was always my dad just playing it for us unprompted. Something in the song awoke an exuberance in my brother, Spencer and I. We would jump and dance on the couch during the fast parts, and sway and spin during the slow. The lyrics were exciting, but also really tragic.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are parts of American history that are shameful, tragic. The event that sparked the writing of this song is one of those tragic moments. There are many parts of American history that I can't be proud of. We have done, and continue to do terrible acts. "American Pie" acknowledges the sadness of a terrible event, and I think that is important. We are too quick to forget bad events and actions. Many Americans believe that the past was somehow better than the present. We can't return to our former glory if we never really had it in the first place. On the other hand, a big part of "American Pie" for me is the nostalgia. I have good memories attached to the song. American could be better, but on a more personal level I love my home. I love my family and friends I and here with. I am not personally patriotic in the original definition of the word. I don't love my country because it is good, I love it because of the people here that I know to be good. I confess, there are parts of this song I still don't understand. I still don't quite get the meaning behind the chorus, or if it has a meaning beyond what is actually written. What the deeper meanings of several of the verses still eludes me too. The stories that it tells (that I mentioned earlier) are part of what characterizes "American Pie" as the American Dream for me. I am a storyteller at heart, I think. This song, more than almost any other for me, made me imagine. Perhaps the writer's meaning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Rock Music : The Impact Of Music And Its Impact On Music Rock is a music genre which is "a form of popular music that evolved from rock and roll and pop music during the mid– and late 1960s" (Dictionary). When it was introduced, it gained a "generation of youth that was much larger than any in recent memory" (America Rocks and Rolls). Throughout the ages, it has been increasing in popularity within society, to the point where it has different types of music based on this genre. As technology started to progress, so did rock, having it become a major part in some cultures. As a result, it became one of the few genres that had multiple sub genres. Rock music has affected history drastically, influenced by technology, and it impacted society. Rock, which originated in the United States in the late 1940's and the early 1950's, was able to affect history from the start of the new era of the 1950's. In the year of 1953, the world had experienced the new genre of music with Bill Haley and His Comets as the first band to create "a true rock and roll song, taking their single 'Crazy Man Crazy'" (Rockmusictimeline.com). This was the first rock song ever made and it was able to reached the number 12 in the pop charts. Until the year of 1955, when rock became much more popular, that it had gained the "first nationwide #1 hit when Bill Haley's 'Rock Around The Clock' tops the Pop Charts" (Rockmusictimeline.com). It has imaginative changes in tempo, vocal delivery and instrumentation, and imparts a wide range of emotions ranging from pure joy, to melancholy and despair. The song takes the listener on an autobiographical journey through the turbulent 1960's with references to the events that shaped the era. Don Mclean was enshrined in the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 2004 for his work on "American Pie" (Don McLean: Songwriters Hall of Fame Inauguration). With its use of formal structure, allusions, and figurative language, the song, "American Pie", has many poetic qualities. The formal structure of "American Pie" allows Don Mclean to use multiple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the formal structure of this song is quite good, perhaps the use of allusion is one of the most important poetic devices found in "American Pie". An allusion is a reference to a famous person, place or thing. In the first verse Mclean writes "But February made me shiver with ever paper I'd deliver". This allusion refers to the plane crash on February 3, 1959 that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens andthe Big Bopper, J.P. Richardson. Another famous allusion in this song is found in the fifth verse, Mclean makes a reference to the holy trinity, he writes, "And the three men I admired the most: The father, son, and the Holy Ghost, they caught the last train to the coast, the day the music died". This allusion is particularly brilliant on the part of Don Mclean, because it allows each individual person to use their imagination in order to interpret his allusion. This allusion has multiple meanings, for an example if one analysis this allusion in the context of music, Mclean was obviously referring once again to the death of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper, J. P. Richardson. However one could also analyze this allusion in the context of the political leaders of the 1960's and thinks that Mclean was alluding to the deaths of President John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Robert Kennedy. In addition to formal structure and allusions Don Mclean uses Figurative language, such as metaphors, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Song American Pie Is A Representation Of Loss During... The song American Pie is a representation of loss during the transition into the 1970s. It was written in 1971 by Don McLean and filled with his views on the state of society, political changes, and cultural changes. The cultural changes and the loss of everything society knew produced the lost generation that McLean was apart of. He demonstrated his disapproval of the direction of the country by using music, faith, and war as examples of the changes and loss his generation faced. Music heavily influences and creates a voice for the people of the time period it is written in and also reflects the tone of the time period. Mclean's generation was impacted greatly by classic rock and roll artists, such as Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. Music direction and message portrayed the prosperous nature of the 1950s and what life was like before the 1970s. The change in music direction rooted from a tragedy that Mclean recognized with the verse, "But February made me shiver". In February 3, 1959 Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valensand J.P. Richardson died in a plane crash. Theses musicians were Mclean's heroes and rock and roll legends. McLean considered this to be "the day the music died". After their deaths, music drastically changed. New musicians and styles of music came into play. Buddy Holly and the other musicians before the Vietnam war sang uplifting songs or songs with religious references. Fender and Squier both use tremolo style bridges. The difference is that Squier produces guitars in China. They use a type of metal referred as "pop metal." The Chinese collect recycled soda cans and melt it along with a bit of zinc and steel to make it stronger. They cast a mold of the bridge and mass–produce the bridge. With Fender, the tremolo bridge is made out of steel and heavy machinery forms the bridge. The tuning machines on the head of the guitar are also same but very different. With Fender, the rotation ratio is 1:18, which is highly accurate and tunes as it turns. For Squier, the ratio changes to 1:10, which makes it harder to tune because of the more rotations. Most importantly, the pickups of the guitars are very different. Guitar pickups are a device that picks up vibrations from steel or nickel strings using magnets and wounded copper wire. This creates a magnetic field and when the strings move they disturbs the field and changes the current passing through the coils of copper wire. This current is then flows out the output and amplified with an amplifier (2015). With Fender's pickups, they use Alnico slug magnets and pure copper with their coils. These pickups have a nice, clear, and pure tone and sound to them. Squier does not do the same. They use "pop" metal slugs and copper with zinc and other conductive metals and glue a magnet at the bottom of the pickup and it works the same. This will also give you a clear tone but it is not so pure sound. They essentially do the same job but it is cheaper. Also time is a main factor to this. At least, such a cavity in comprehension is accurate for those of us that operate in the most illuminated parts of society. McLean illustrates famous rock star artist and songwriter Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash in 1962 by using rhetorical strategies. The different potential interpretations of this song made it one of the most controversial songs from the 1970's. McLean was hitting home with many emotional resonances defining moments in the recent American experiences. "American Pie" starts out addressing McLean love for music in the 50's. During the 50's, music was a tool for getting people off their feet and on to the dance floors. "And I knew if I had my chance, that I could make those people dance, and maybe they'd be happy for a while" (McLean). This verse symbolizes why he loves to create and perform for his fans. McLean then goes on to mention his mentor Buddy Holly. "But February made me shiver. With every paper, I'd deliver. Shocking news on the doorstep, I couldn't take one more step. I can't remember if I cried. When I read about his widowed bride. But something touched me deep inside. The day the music died" (McLean). Buddy Holly died on February 3, 1959, in a plane crash. There are two theories on why the song was called "American Pie." It was rumored, "American Pie" was the name of the plane that took Buddy Holly life. Also, someone refers it to a symbol of the beauty queen Miss America (Morgan). Mclean remembered the paper boy delivering the morning paper and there on the front page, was the story of the death of Buddy Holly. At the time Holly's wife was pregnant and soon had a miscarriage afterward. McLean, he says he can't remember if he cried in the moment or not. All this was in the first few verses in "American Pie." McLean incorporated these lines of imagery to help the listener picture his past emotional experiences. I believe McLean wanted to paint a picture for his audience could relate to. Today, this would be a major issue and verge on the issue of copyright infringement. However, back then, perhaps it had a positive impact on both the white and black artists– white artists get to have success on the performance they create while African American artists gained the extra exposure their song needed at the time to get popular. While many of us today may not agree with this concept, American society and the industry would have only properly functioned like this. Many times like in the case of "Shake Rattle and Roll", the covers aren't close to the original piece. Therefore, both the originals and the covers were equally different versions of the same thing, so both artists deserved credit. • 36. How Did Buddy Holly Influence The 1950's Charles Hardin Holley, also known as Buddy Holly, was one of the most significant and influential rock 'n' roll icons of the 1950's even though he only ever had one chart topping single. Holly's musical legend was one of many firsts: First rock 'n' roll performer to insist on artistic control over his material and to write/arrange his own songs and supervise his studio sessions. First to master the technical parts of recording including echo, double–tracking and overdubbing (he recorded his own voice and guitar playing). First to add classical stringed instruments in rock music. First to ditch the "pretty boy" looks of most 1950's performers for a more intelligent, slightly geeky look, and the first rock musician to attract not only a female, but also a male audience. Singing Style Holly had a unique singing style which featured stretched syllables and high energy. He broke the typical rock practice by singing ballads with a "feeling of nervous excitement," said Arnold Shaw in The Rockin' 50s. Buddy took a ballad of woeful words and... Chuck decided to have a nice electric guitar solo, as well as comforting tones that ran over the music with a small valve amplifier. Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and Little Richard were major pioneers in this area of music. They coaxed Rockabilly to become a thing. This all happened in the 1950s. Thank you, Elvis! Moving into the 1950s. The solid–body guitar was introduced (and sold) in this time period. This was the ultimate sprout of rock and roll. R&B, Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Boogie, you name it, Rock and Roll most likely had it. In 1953, Bill Haley and the Comets song "Crazy Man Crazy" hit #12 on the charts. At this point, African American rock artists were extremely popular, and making it to the top. The Orioles made it to the top as well with "Crying in the Chapel".
