After being fired from Miles Davis's band in 1957 for his chronic use of heroin, John Coltrane was hurt tremendously. He decided it was time he quit

As Coltrane was starting to get introduced to the greats of jazz like Miles Davis and Charlie Parker, he started drinking heavily. Then, probably in
1953, he started doing heroin (Thomas, 52). By 1957, he had played with Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and twice with Miles Davis. Davis, a
recovering heroin addict himself, said of Coltrane during this time that "he'd be playing in clothes that looked like he had slept in them for days . . .
and when he wasn't nodding, [he'd be] picking his nose and sometimes eating it" (Davis, 212). Once, while on stage with Davis, Coltrane nodded out,
and Davis punched him in the stomach. Eventually, Davis would kick him out of his band for the second time.
While Coltrane was kicking his habit in early 1957, he was touched by God. How this came about was known only to Coltrane. But the
transformation in him resulted in some of the most powerful music of the twentieth century. In late 1957, he started working on what was to be
known as "sheets of sound," a style in which Coltrane would play every note in chord as fast as he could, while starting and ending in different notes
in a specific key. That year, he released his first acclaimed album on the Blue Note label, Blue Train, which was a record of jazz standards.
Miles Davis loved the "new" Coltrane, and hired him back into his band for a third time. Davis came up with a new jazz concept, modal improvisation.

How do you measure greatness? People often confuse notoriety and fame with greatness, but I would say that the greatness of a person is measured by

It is all too easy to ignore the needs of those around us. But Mother did not. She taught us that as Christians, we are directed by God to love our

Relish the joy in the small things. Like the variety in a box of Whitman's Sampler. The color of a maple leaf in fall. A letter from a loved one.

It all happened one morning. It was a weird morning, one that I had never experienced like before. My regular mornings consisted of pure

My First Day Of School
It 's funny what it 's you remember as a child. I don 't remember my third birthday or my first day of school, I don't remember running around the
playground or what my favorite food was. But I remember very clearly the day my cat died. It 's been 10 years since, and still the most memorable
memory of my childhood.
My sister Riley and I were twins. We were always thinking ahead trying to think of new mischievous plans while waiting on getting into trouble. On
this particular day, we had turned our bedroom walls into our colored master pieces. Even though our mom tried to punish us separately – I near the
corner of the kitchen, Riley in the dining room – we were still giggling and sticking out our tongues at each other. She was just about to scold us when
the doorbell rang.
My mother gave us both a look as she went to answer the door, stopping us in our tracks of silliness.
Standing on the other side of the door was a tall, lanky man wearing a suit. I remember seeing him sniffle and hold back his tears.

Every person you know needs to be encouraged at some point. Everyone needs to have someone in their lives who is willing to listen to their stories
and tell them they are loved.
I can remember some of the most tender moments with my grandmother. We would just sit at her dinner table and talk. She would tell me what she was
thinking–usually about special memories from her past. I would listen to her intently, as if I were hearing her stories for the first time. I knew it meant a
great deal to her.
But then came one of the most painful days in both our lives. My grandmother had a fatal heart attack during surgery. She left this world and entered
her heavenly reward. While I was thrilled for her, I was sad as I realized that from then on, she couldn't say anything to me–not a word.
Although it was extremely difficult to bear, I was so thankful we had not wasted the opportunities God had given us to express our love for one
another. It gave me comfort to know we had not taken those times for granted. I was certain my grandmother understood how very much I cared for her.

the shortcoming of understanding other people's perspectives. People have different stances on life, and want to canvass the things that they lived
through. This is where foul language and censorship is most debated.
Cons of Music Censorship
Music censorship is the editing and cutting of specific words or phrases for a purpose in order to bound distinct subject matter from young minds and
to prevent more wrongdoings in the inferior generations. The problem with censorship isn't just the reigns on the free mind, but on what the mind can
bestow as a gift to others. Music serves more than just as a means of entertainment. Music conveys messages to the world, and professes problems that
are puzzling to deliberate with parents. The bad thing about censoring music is the fact that our right to expression is denounced by other people
uncomfortable with certain musical topics (Lombardo, 2017). Censorship is meant to mask certain words and phrases from younger audiences as to
not warp young minds into thinking that doing drugs, drinking and suicide are acceptable (Lombardo, 2017).
Origin of music
The start of music itself is difficult to pinpoint, but we began to notice the importance of music during the slave times and how much it helped them
during the laborious times. Since the slave times, singing has always been important in the African American culture. In the late 1700s they sang about
their sorrows and how much they wanted to go home. Singing was also used as a means of communication, slaves sang to find other that were kin to
them and to express feelings and emotions (berry, 2017).
Slave Times. Wade in the Water was a song sung by former slave Harriet Tubman. Wade in the Water served as a warning for other slaves to go
through the water to mask their scent from the slave catching dogs (berry, 2017). In order for slaves to understand she had to sing a song since most
were uneducated, but they could understand through music.

Beatles music makes you feel good, even 30 years after first hearing it, I and many other fans get intense pleasure from listening to the songs. By the
age of 4 I was a keen listener, and by the age of 7 I owned all their albums. My view of the world we live in was shaped to a greater or lesser extent by
the messages and music on those albums.
