Most people believe that the initiative of setting up National Geopark is
merely for conservation of precious geological resources
YET... GEOPARKS – Promoting Earth Heritage,
Sustaining Local Communities

conservation, research and sustainable development

• assist worldwide local societies to conserve
the integrity and diversity of abiotic and biotic
nature
• to ensure equitable and sustainable use of
natural resources and to support economic and

4. Cases 1 - Psiloritis Natural Park , Greece
• Traditional craftsmen exist in region of Mt. psiloritis
• Park invited European artists exchange ideas with local artists
and craftsmen
• trade marking certain designs-characteristic patterns from the
Psiloritis environment and its culture
(can be used for decorative or utilitarian ornaments,
children's toys, clothes etc…)
stimulate economic activities
in the region of the Park
5. Case 2 - Danxiashan Geopark , China
• In 2009, thanks to the enhancement of scenic quality,
promotion of local trademark produce, in addition to
the open-up of Wuhan-Guangzhou express rail link
• Annual visitors to Danxiashan met a record-high of
2millions , bring about Remenbi 0.35 billion revenue
7. • In collaboration with Danxiashan travel agents,
local farmers in the region (e.g.塘联村) could
ensure stable retailing markets for their
produce (e.g.塘联村柑桔)
• With the fame of Danxiashan Geopark, local
farmers can build an international brand name
for their produce
8. Case 3 – Hong Kong National Geopark (HKNG)
• L’hotel Island South made a partnership
arrangement with HKNG to be the first “Hong
Kong National Geopark Hotel”
• HKNG serves as a new scenic spot, which
attract visitors from worldwide and boost local
hotel & tourism industry

promotes local participation

restaurateurs’ to create some geological dishes
for visitors

• Though GGN benefits world economy, drawbacks exist
• economy bloom ignorance of people towards
environmental conservation
• companies may ignore other aspects because a drop in
revenue may be resulted
• Economic growth at the expense of potential destruction to
Geopark and World Natural Heritages

• laws cannot protect some place or heritage which
are in the waiting list
• cannot ignore the importance of the nature
• since our living including economy is related to the
development of the nature
• Government from different nations has to implement
similar laws to protect the balance of the economy
and the nature
